What's new

England (138/5) crowned T20 World Cup champions after a 5-wicket win over Pakistan (137/8)

The poor score made the bowlers go searching with the wrong lengths

Love the skills of the bowlers but hopefully they learn to be more patient and not look to swing those half volleys and use the pitch more.

Gutted but they fought.

For me as an Indian fan i am saluting Pak for showing fighting spirits and unfortunately batting was to blame as
Hard luck pak as they didn't have a decent score to defend
Hopefully this will make Pakistan a formidable opposition
Well played England and congratulations for winning WC probably best team in tournament

Pakistan overachieved massively in this WC. Everyone knew that England was the best T20 team in the world and deserving winners.

Pakistani batsmen are way behind in technique, game awareness, fitness, fielding vs the top sides in the world.

Congrats to England. The best team has won this world cup.
Pak bowlers did well while defending a small score. 137 was a nothing total.
Pakistan effectively lost the game in the final 4 overs of their batting where they scored just 18 runs. Another 20-25 runs and it was game on. Sam Curran rightly declared MoM.
What we are lacking in this team are more power hitters like Haris, Hardik or Livingstone.

The way Pakistan batted in last 4 overs is where game was lost. They just scored 28 runs from last 4 which is criminal.

A good fightback by pak bowlers, unlucky that shaheen not available at the end. Congratulations England. They were the best team of the tournament, no doubt.

after the india match I was depressed for 2 days and was replaying the match over in ky mind over and over again

for this match tho I don't have any regrets I'm not gonna lose any sleep over it

one of the greatest matches I've ever seen

congrats england well deserved

Adil Rashid deserves special praise as well

Did well in two back to back KO games v teams that supposedly play spin well.

Conceded just 20 runs v India in 4 overs (20/1, crucial wicket of overhyped SKY)

v Pak (22/2)

Even an additional 20 runs would have made this game more interesting. That Afridi injury pretty much ruined the game for pak.

Jos Buttler | England captain: "It is (the icing on the cake). To win the T20 World Cup now, immensely proud of everyone here. It has been a long journey and few changes but we are reaping the rewards of how we have played in the last few years. It's been a fantastic tournament. We went to Pakistan before coming here, which was a valuable time for the group and this felt a long way after the Ireland match but the character we showed from thereon in must-win games is amazing. He (Matty Motts) has fitted in really well. We have got a few Australians in the coaching staff with us in this tournament and he has led the coaching staff really well, gives the players great freedom. Huge swing in the game, that was a fantastic over from Adil. He has been outstanding for us in the last three games, just the guy who makes things happen and his performance was outstanding. When you hit the right length there was a little bit of movement and they were obviously bowling at a good pace, not easy at all. We managed to get away to a start which controlled the run-rate and we bat deep as well. And that man again, Ben Stokes is there at the end. He is the ultimate competitor in anything he does and has the experience to bank on as well. He timed it perfectly, the impetus that he and Moeen Ali had just took it away from Pakistan."

Babar Azam | Pakistan captain: "Congratulations to England, they deserve to be champions and fought well. We felt like home here, got great support at every venue. Thanks for your support. Yes, we lost the first two games but how we came in the last four games was incredible. I just told the boys to play our natural game, but we fell 20 runs short and the boys fought well with the ball. Our bowling is one of the best attacks in the world. Unfortunately Shaheen's injury put us off, but that's part of the game."

Babar Azam is a poor captain who is incapable of any improvement. He needs to be replaced

What led to Pakistan's loss in the T20 World Cup final?

Pakistan lost the final of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup to England on Sunday and here, we dissect what went wrong for them in the contest, and where exactly they ended up losing the match.
Pakistan lost wickets in clusters

Pakistan looked set to post a competitive total when they had 84 runs on the board for the loss of just two wickets, at the end of the 11th over. But everything fell apart as the England bowlers made an excellent comeback to restrict them to a total of 137/8. Pakistan lost six wickets for just 53 runs in the last nine overs of their innings, scoring at an less than six runs per over during that period.

Expensive Powerplay

Pakistan claimed three England wickets in the powerplay while defending their total of 137 but they conceded 49 valuable runs at the same time. In low-scoring matches, the defending team not only needs to pick up wickets but also needs to keep the runs in check. While Babar Azam's men ticked the wickets' column, they couldn't control the flow of runs.

That took a lot of the pressure off the English middle-order, which helped them to bide their time at the crease to take the game deep. Even though Pakistan kept fighting hard, the England batters just kept nudging around and that was enough to see them through.

Shaheen sparks Pakistan but hopes fade with injury

Pakistan needed a fast start not only to defend their modest total but to limit the damage England can do in the Powerplay. England had averaged the most runs (52) in the Powerplay at the T20 World Cup for the loss of only one wicket, and while they scored 49 in the Final, that was at the price of in-form openers Jos Buttler and Alex Hales, as well as Phil Salt. Inspirational pacer Shaheen Afridi kickstarted the attack with a ripping yorker to dismiss Hales in the first over and immediately boost Pakistan’s chances.

Afridi's role was going to be equally important in the death overs as well. But he was seen limping off the field with an injury. He did try to come back and bowl but had to pull out after bowling just the first ball of the 16th over. Part-time spinner Iftikhar Ahmed was brought into the attack to complete Afridi's over but he ended up conceding 13 runs off his five deliveries, which allowed England to get the momentum back in their innings.

Team over achieved in this world cup & bowlers gave it their all unlike capitulation in 1999 world cup final.

Stature of Pakistan team has been raised under Babar. We lack depth in genuine batters ( a grey area)
Time to prepare for WTC & ODI World cup.

England also had it’s journey, do not forget they lost final in eden gardens (4 balls 4 sixes ) next year semi final of 2017 chmps trphy.

Pakistan is going through a journey, they will win something big coming year.

Congrats to England
And well done for fighting spirit by Pakistan.

Misbah is quite angry and just dissected the whole issue with Pakistan.

Basically, Babar sucks as a captain

Stokes the hero as England claim second T20 World Cup title in style

An unbeaten half-century from Ben Stokes and brilliant performances with the ball from Sam Curran and Adil Rashid helped England to a second ICC Men's T20 World Cup title with an impressive five-wicket victory over Pakistan in Melbourne on Sunday.

Stokes used all his experience to score 52 from 49 balls just when his team needed it most as England chased down Pakistan's meagre total of 137/8 with six deliveries remaining at the MCG.

Unsung heroes shine with the ball for England
Seamer Sam Curran (3/12) and Adil Rashid (2/22) were near unplayable for much of Pakistan's innings, with the duo picking up five valuable wickets between them and conceding just one boundary.

Rashid picked up the massive wicket of Babar Azam for 32 just as it looked like the skipper was about to accelerate and Pakistan's batting innings never reached great heights from that point on.

Shan Masood (38) and Shadab Khan (20) contributed some handy late runs, but their total of 137/8 was never going to be enough with England’s strong batting line-up.

Afridi injury turns match England's way
While England were marginally ahead when requiring 41 from the final five overs, the game turned even more their way when Pakistan pace spearhead Shaheen Afridi was forced to limp off after the first delivery of his third over.

Afridi had given Pakistan some life when he produced a superb yorker to send the dangerous Alex Hales packing for one and fellow quicks Haris Rauf (2/23) and Naseem Shah (0/30) were working off his energy and bowling with great pace.

Afridi was brought back for his second spell and it could have been pivotal with Stokes and Moeen Ali (19) needing to score at more than eight runs per over to clinch victory.

But Afridi was still feeling the effects of landing awkwardly following a catch earlier in England's innings and limped from the field, leaving Iftikhar Ahmed to bowl the reminder of his over.

Stokes takes advantage of unfortunate situation
The experienced left-hander seized on Afridi's injury quickly as he smashed a four and a six off Iftikhar's final two deliveries to put England firmly in the driver's seat.

It quickly turned from a tough situation to an easy one, with Moeen joining in on the act with consecutive boundaries off Mohammad Wasim to put the victory target within sight.

And while Moeen lost his wicket late, Stokes was there at the end with the match-winning half-century ensuring England claimed a thrilling five-wicket victory and a second T20 World Cup title.

Just tuned on on PP - wonderful exciting game, worthy of a final.
Congratulations England - they were clinical on the day and also in the tournament on the whole.
wonderfully well played by pak in fighting hard to defend a paltry total.
wonder why Nawaaz didnt bowl.
all in all, a gr8 yadgaar tournament.
commiserations to all pak PP fans - your team is was a worthy finalist.

Congratulations on England om a fantastic win. Pakistan played their part in enthralling game. Sheens injury could have bern decisive.

Will be hard to digest the loss but wasn't as bad as 99 final or as heartbreaking as 2007 final.

Even the loss to India earlier in the tournament bit a lot more than this.

But it's fine.

I don't understand this "over achieving" stuff brjng said about Pakistan.

You don't reach a semi final in 2021, final of an Asia Cup followed by a tri series victory in New Zealand snd then the final of a World Cup in 2022 by saying they over achieved.

Disagree golden opportunity missed by us. Our next opportunity will be in 2030s maybe. WC finals are extremely rare for us.

The better team won.Pakistan made too many mistakes. They scored something like 18 runs in last 4 overs.Naseem started poorly. He was looking for swing. He should have bowled fast and test match lengths. His first 2 overs were poor. All in all I am not disappointed.Pakistan should get rid of Asif Ali,Khushdil and Haider. If they can find decent replacements then Pakistan will be a good T20 side.

Disagree golden opportunity missed by us. Our next opportunity will be in 2030s maybe. WC finals are extremely rare for us.

There's two world cups in next 2 years. 2023 WC and 2024 wt20.

This was in the country where our record has been the worst. Had only play 3 t20is in Australia prior to wt20.
Haven't won a test in Australia in more than 25 years.
Haven't won an ODI series in Aus in 20 years.

Our batting lineup has a lot holes in it from 1-8. A proper seam bowling allrounder is also needed.

Naseem Shah after his first over bowled the best 3 overs he will ever bowl without taking a wicket, Stokes didn’t know what was going on, just one slight nick and he’d of been out!

No need to micro-analyze
Just did not have enough runs on the board. 137 was a nothing total. Despite that, bowlers showed good fight; made England sweat for these runs. Shaheen getting injured at the wrong time was unlucky otherwise who knows...
We should back this team
No need to make wholesale changes
Just need 1 or 2 good power hitters (to give a better balance to the side) who can make better use of the middle and death overs.
Pakistan effectively lost the game in the final 4 overs of their batting (18/4). 20-25 more runs there and it was game on. Sam Curran was the game changer; rightly declared the MoM and MoT. Adil bowled well too.
Congrats to England. They deserved the Cup because of their batting firepower + decent bowling attack.
I can swallow this defeat because I know that the best team has won this tournament.

Pakistan captain Babar Azam has defended Pakistan’s approach with the bat following their loss to England in the final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 at the MCG.

Babar and his fellow Pakistani batters stuttered through the first innings to reach 137/8 from their 20 overs, with only Shan Masood and Shadab Khan scoring at a rate in excess of 130 out of the recognised batters.

“I'm very sad. I think we were 20 runs short and we couldn't defend because of that,” the Pakistan captain said in his media conference after the game.

“We are very proud to play for Pakistan. It is very sad when you can't finish it. But I’m disappointed.

"We were in a different situation. We were trying to build partnerships but we couldn't. Whenever a wicket falls, the batter goes and he takes two-three balls to settle down. We came on the back foot as a batting unit.

Babar Azam highlights key reason behind Pakistan's loss
Babar and his opening partner Mohammad Rizwan are among the highest-ranked T20I batters in the world and have scored a vast quantity of runs in recent years for Pakistan.

But the pair have come in for criticism at times due to their safety-first approach during the Powerplay, often scoring relatively slowly compared to other top nations and then looking for the team to use the platform set in order to accelerate in the second half of the innings.

The same occurred in the final, with Babar scoring 32 from 28 and Rizwan 15 from 14. But the skipper says the tactic isn’t necessarily the wrong one.

"It depends on the situation. I think they had three dismissals in the first six overs and we had two. It depends on the situation and the conditions, what is the demand from you and after that you plan. Every team has its own plans and we stuck to our plan.

"Sometimes we are not able to give 100% on it. We try not to repeat our mistakes. But this is a part of the game. Sometimes you do well and sometimes you don't. This is the beauty of cricket. Every day is different."

With the openers so often being the dominant force in Pakistan’s T20 batting effort, the middle order have struggled to make an impression at times in the past couple of years.

Masood’s 28-ball 38 and Shadab’s quickfire 20 aside, there were limited contributions from the players down the order in the final.

But, asked if he was disappointed in the middle order, the captain responded:

"As a team, we win. As a team, we lose. The way we started, we couldn't finish well. On the 11th over, it was 80-85. I think we should have finished at 150. I think we made some mistakes."

With the next Men’s T20 World Cup scheduled to be held in the Caribbean and United States in two years’ time, there is an opportunity for teams to make changes following this year’s tournament and build across the next 24-month cycle.

But Babar says the Pakistan hierarchy will now turn their attention towards the upcoming Test Series against England and New Zealand before making any personnel decisions in the shorter form of the game.

“It’s too early to decide,” he said.

“We'll play Tests next and when T20Is come around again we'll decide.”

Yup.

It is difficult for any team to defend 137 against a power-packed English side.

I think bowlers did well.

Great display by the bowlers (minus Wasim Jr.).

While the '92 Destiny talk was all good and well, you can't win a world title (and that too against England) destiny and luck. This batting order has absolutely no idea what to do in setting a target. If they literally took singles/doubles in the last 5 overs, we would have cake-walked to 155, which is above-par on this pitch. When your reserves consist of Haider Ali, Khusdil and Asif Ali, that should tell you everything. We have a Chachaa who know one will remember in five years playing a MAIDEN IN A T20 FINAL, and an "all-rounder" in Wasim swinging like a mental patient. For the love of God, these are not international caliber players...

Despite ALL that, our Bowlers bowled their heart out and we were within striking distance with 5 overs left. Only for Wasim Jr to bowl one of the worst overs I can recall. Brainless, idiotic, take your pick. Fine leg up, but lets bowl 4 bouncers. See above regarding mental patient. This guy has consistently leaked runs every chance he's got, yet he's playing in T20 final.

But hey, we will have Haydos give a non-sensical post-match pep talk, which the PCB will promote like crazy, players will post sappy social media posts apologizing (i.e., see Shadab, right on cue), zero-accountability will be had, and the circus will continue. Rinse and repeat.

Welcome to Pakistan Cricket.

congratulations to england. pak bowlers fought very well today. considering the MCG conditions this season and pak's bowling attack, at the start of the day i thought 150 would be a very good target.

What's frustrating is a similar situation happened in our opening match vs IND also on a tricky MCG pitch.

The middle order threw their wickets away trying to clear the massive boundaries when they could've easily scored at a decent clip by finding gaps and running hard between the wickets. Thankfully we managed to get to par, but it wasn't enough.

Today we made the same mistakes. Instead of assessing the conditions and adjusting our approach to aim for 150-160, which would've been defendable, we aimed for 180 and got nowhere near. We didn't learn our lesson.

As always the batsmen failed to score enough runs. That is the simple reason why we lost the match. We fielded okay as well but 138 just wasn't enough against the best T20 batting line up in the world.

Eng were clearly the better team, deserved winners for Pakistan opportunity missed alot of things to improve

Hard luck Pakistan who put up a fight you rarely see from past teams, but a stunning culmination of one fine run for England, they can proudly identify as the greatest LOI team of all time with them becoming the first double world champions

Wonderful yes but worthy of a final? No, this was not worthy. A score of 130 odd in a final was not going to be worthy

Might have been had Afridi not got crocked after 2.1 overs.

The double World Cup didn’t exist before T20 and it’s played so often you cant say England are the best ODI team ever

Don't think Pakistan will ever get into a major final again anytime soon. Once you are in the final of a World Event, you have to bring out your A game and as captain you have to be spot on with your decisions. Pakistan failed on these fronts and they won't get an opportunity to get into the finals again anytime soon because other teams are going to come better prepared with better selections, tactics, preperation while the PCB will still keep sticking with the habitual captaincy blundering Babar Azam under the pretext of this team has reached the finals of 2 major tournaments and the semi finals of a major tournament in 2021, he does not deserve to be removed e.t.c.

Pakistan fans have unrealistic expectations from their team.Pakistan has done well to reach the finals. The fans should be satisfied .Australia,New Zealand and South Africa are good teams yet none of them qualified for the finals.I know Pakistan got to semis because SA lost to Netherlands but luck is part of every sport. The toss, umpiring, weather ,injury(during the match) can decide the fate of teams. One can’t blame Pakistan for SA’s loss to Netherlands.Pakistan bowling is getting better and better. The batting needs to be sorted out.Need a few hard hitting batters with good technique and temperament.

Different things went in favour of Pakistan from SA losing to Netherlands to playing both NZ and SA in Sydney the only ground where conditions are favourable other grounds Pakistans batting struggled such things won’t happen in the future luck evens itself out all this cornered tigers qudrat ka nizaam mentality will only lead to more failures in big matches.

Only by proper planning not making any player bigger than the team dropping them if necessary changing the combination based on match conditions selecting suitable players for the format not on personal likes and dislikes only these things can win a big tournament.

Might have been had Afridi not got crocked after 2.1 overs.

Afridi's injury changed a lot of the advantage Pakistan was holding at that time. However, England bats so deep, they really didn't need to take that extra risk because Pakistan was about 20-30 runs short either way. Not many teams would have lost (especially a batting heavy eng side) trying to get 40 odd from 30 odd-balls.

England on Sunday became the first team to hold the 50-over Cricket World Cup and 20-over World Cup at the same time. The Jos Buttler-led side achieved the feat after beating Pakistan in a nervy T20 World Cup final at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. After the result, legendary fast bowler Wasim Akram highlighted a few mistakes made by the Pakistan team during the final. Akram felt while the team fought well, the batting approach wasn't up to the mark. He also pointed out a few captaincy lapses, which swung the game back in England's favour.

"A total 137 was never going to be enough on this track. We made so many mistakes in batting. In the end, we fought well. Shaheen's injury did have an impact as he did not bowl two overs. Some captaincy issues were there in between, especially when Moeen Ali came out to bat. I think they Iftikhar should've bowled an over there," Akram said on A Sports.

In the final, Ben Stokes and Sam Curran starred as England edged Pakistan by five wickets.

Jos Buttler's side held Pakistan to 137-8 in front of a partisan 80,462 fans at the MCG, with player-of-the-match and tournament Curran bagging 3/12 and Adil Rashid chipping with 2/22.

In reply, England slumped to 49-3 in the sixth over as they struggled to get any momentum against a fiery pace attack, with boundaries hard to come by.

But Stokes (52 not out) and Moeen Ali (19) used their experience and cool heads to guide England to a win with six balls to spare.

(With AFP Inputs)

ICC should hold the T-20 WC after 4 years just like the ODI WC. Holding the tournament every 2 years devalues the tournament.

What could Babar have done during the game in the situation as a captain on the field which you feel would have forced a different outcome against an all time great LOI team?

No one can guarantee anything but that MCG pitch had plenty of pace, bounce and was swinging, seaming in the second innings. Once Buttler got out at 43/3, Babar should have had two slips and should have gone for the kill by looking to bowl out Shaheen, Rauf, Naseem and Wasim Jr.

Maybe Stokes and Brooke's would have been careful, circumspect and looked to play the bowlers out without worrying too much for the run rate, maybe Shadab later on could have exploited the run rate pressure and snapped a few wickets up.

You have to make the best decisions at the time and give yourself the best chance of picking up 10 wickets. It's much easier to accept defeat knowing you played your best game, made the best decisions but still fell short of the opposition.

Babars reading of the game is very poor as captain.

At the start while they bowled well, there was drivel to, leg side lines and too full, Butler’s knock only had one great shot in it. With the ball flying all over the place it’s a no win situation, a slip eventually came in. I don’t know if England were that aggressive with their field placings either.

Pakistan were still in a position to kill the game but Shaheen got injured. Stokes was going to target Wasim, who’d have bowled better with Shaheen keeping the pressure at one end. Moeen was the major threat which Pak would have had to neutralise.

I don't understand why James Vince is still part of the England setup. Very mediocre at best.

He used to do that and leave NAWAZ for the last over. Maybe, he wasnt confident about Shadab too regarding this with what happend with NAWAZ. But bowling out pacers and picking wickets by them was the only way to win.

ICC should hold the T-20 WC after 4 years just like the ODI WC. Holding the tournament every 2 years devalues the tournament.

Having this one back to back after last year felt really weird.

T20 WC will probably become the main one now. The ODI WC feels a bit too much.

Can’t have multiple tournaments with the same name.

Should ditch ODI WC for the Champions Trophy.
