England will be aiming to continue their perfect start to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 when they face Sri Lanka in Sharjah on Monday.

Sri Lanka await for in-form Group 1 leaders England, as Eoin Morgan’s side target a win to effectively guarantee a semi-final spot.

England have been in stunning form so far in the tournament, demolishing West Indies first up and comfortably beating Bangladesh, before cruising to an emphatic win over Australia on Saturday to make it three from three.

Jason Roy starred with the bat in the win over Bangladesh, but his half-century was overshadowed by an extraordinary knock by his opening partner Jos Buttler against Australia, who slammed 71 off 32 balls in the innings of the tournament so far.

With Buttler in that sort of form, and England’s bowling attack looking in fine fettle, it will take an impressive performance to stop them.

But Sri Lanka certainly have the calibre to trouble the group leaders.

Wanindu Hasaranga took a hat-trick in the loss to South Africa on Saturday, and has the quality to really trouble England. And the entire Sri Lankan outfit is much improved from the squad that were whitewashed 3-0 by Monday’s opponents earlier in 2021.

Sri Lanka know they need a win too, with only one more game against West Indies to come, and South Africa and Australia to overhaul if they want to snatch a qualification spot for the semi-finals.

Fixture details

The match: England v Sri Lanka, Match 29
Time: 18:00 local time, Monday 1 November 2021
Venue: Sharjah Cricket Stadium

The teams

Both teams are expected to be unchanged for the fixture in Sharjah. Sri Lanka’s combination of top-class spin and high pace has been an impressive feature of the tournament so far, while England’s dominance in their three matches to-date has allowed them to absorb the injury issues of Mark Wood.

Probable England XI: Jason Roy, Jos Buttler, Dawid Malan, Jonny Bairstow, Eoin Morgan (captain), Liam Livingstone, Moeen Ali, Chris Woakes, Chris Jordan, Adil Rashid, Tymal Mills.

Probable Sri Lanka XI: Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Perera, Charith Asalanka, Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Avishka Fernando, Wanindu Hasaranga, Dasun Shanaka (captain), Chamika Karunaratne, Dushmantha Chameera, Maheesh Theekshana, Lahiru Kumara.

Key players

Jos Buttler, England: The opening batter’s dismantling of Australia last time out underlined his potential to dominate a match single-handedly. Sri Lanka will know that if Buttler bats long then he’ll hit them out of the game, so the right-hander remains the most prized wicket in England’s strong batting line-up.

Wanindu Hasaranga, Sri Lanka: High-quality spin bowling is the best way to beat the world’s top-ranked T20I side, and Sri Lanka have one of the very best in the tournament in the shape of Hasaranga. If Sri Lanka’s main man with the ball can weave his way through England’s top order then he can put the group leaders under real pressure for the first time in the tournament. His aggressive hitting with the bat could also be a feature against England’s death bowlers.

Ladder situation

Victory for Sri Lanka would put them right back into the mix for qualification, but a third Group 1 loss would all-but wipe out any chances of progression.

England’s strong net run rate means they are already in an extremely strong position to qualify, but victory against Sri Lanka underline their dominance of Group 1 and effectively secure their spot in the semi-finals as group winners.

What they said

Sri Lanka coach Mahela Jayawardene, who promoted him to opener at Mumbai Indians, on Buttler: “When you have the option of the scoop, the bowlers are always under pressure with which field to go to. At the same time, he's probably one of the best players through the off side as well: he opens himself up and the hands come through. He's a good player of spin: he has the reverse-sweep, he comes down and hits - we saw the way he controlled Zampa [and how] he never let him settle into that line and length."

Liam Livingstone on Buttler: "I've said it all along: he's the best hitter of a white ball in the world, and when he gets on a roll like that (against Australia), there's no stopping him. That was pretty much the perfect innings, a clinic of white-ball power hitting. It was a pleasure to just sit there and watch a genius at work."

This will not be one sided like other England matches, As change of venue and if the wicket is slow, Srilanka will come in to the game.

Surely England too strong for Sri Lanka?

Sri Lanka have won the toss and have opted to field against England

Teams:

England (Playing XI): Jason Roy, Jos Buttler(w), Dawid Malan, Jonny Bairstow, Eoin Morgan(c), Liam Livingstone, Moeen Ali, Chris Woakes, Chris Jordan, Adil Rashid, Tymal Mills

Sri Lanka (Playing XI): Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Perera(w), Charith Asalanka, Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Avishka Fernando, Wanindu Hasaranga, Dasun Shanaka(c), Chamika Karunaratne, Dushmantha Chameera, Maheesh Theekshana, Lahiru Kumara

This is a smaller ground compared to Abu Dhabi and Dubai. If England openers get in then they will put up a big score.England will only lose if they play poor cricket.

It boils my blood to see Sam Curran sitting in the Sky Studios as an expert

2 kori ka all rounder!

Bottom line - Batting first is a nightmare in this tournament. Even the so called mighty batting lineup is struggling here.

Think it's more to do with the pitch then batting first. Low and slow, with Sri Lanka having already played here twice and first time for England today.

Tough conditions here. I wonder if Buttler, Livingstone and Ali can get England to 135 — that could be a really close fight. 120 or less to win and Sri Lanka will be fancying their chances.

Sri Lanka should try to restrict England to below 140. They can probably chase it down.

Sri Lanka beat England during 2019 World Cup. Same can happen today.

Buttler starting to free his arms. He needs to stay there until the end.

England - 58/3 after 11 overs.

Lahiru Kumara was very expensive against Aussies. Gave away 48 runs from 3 overs. Did okay today.

Morgan completely out of form...and this pitch not the kind where you can suddenly find form....

England - 61/3 after 12 overs.

Spinner Theekshana was brilliant today.

4-0-13-0.

I am surprised Sri Lanka aren't playing one extra spinner here.

They could've played a spinner instead of Lahiru Kumara (who generally leaks runs).

Sri Lankan pace department is ordinary currently. Very bold of them to play 3 pacers in Sharjah.

Sri Lanka should keep Morgan there and not get him out...he's doing them a favour

If SLN beat England today then this group is still wide open since it is a strong group.

A strong group is never the group of death, it keeps the competition open till the very end.

A weak group is tougher, 3-4 games carry immense importance because certain teams are expected to keep losing. That is never a good thing, a weak team is weak for everyone so basically you are nullifying a lot of games.

Why are Sri Lanka playing Kumara over and over?

Cost them a game against South Africa; was expensive against Aussies; expensive again today.

Got into a fight with Litton Das against Bangladesh too.

Their bowling has been terrible as Niall said. Bowling full is pathetic when you need to hit the hard lengths on this pitch
Gifting freebies to a powerful batting lineup.

England - 105/3 after 15 overs.

Big over. 22 from it.

Lahiru's figure: 4-0-44-0.

Super 12 - T20 29 of 45

England Vs Sri Lanka

Engalnd 105/3 (15/20 ov)

Current RR: 7.00
• Last 5 ov (RR): 58/0 (11.60)

Eoin Morgan* 22 Runs 26 Balls
Jos Buttler 63 Runs 49 Balls

Shanaka should've bowled more. He takes pace off the ball.

Sri Lanka's strategy today has been questionable. May cost them the game.

Buttler at the absolute top of his game. Well on his way to the player of the tournament award already.

England look unstoppable.

Either them or Pakistan will win this tournament.

Good contribution from Morgan after a bad run of form. That will help him.

England - 149/4 after 19 overs.

Hasaranga's figure: 4-0-21-3.

Sri Lankan spinners today: 8-0-34-3.

Pacers leaked runs.

Butler gets his first T20I hundred.

England finish at 163/4 after 20 overs.

Sri Lanka need 164 to win.

Holy wow, a ton in these conditions within 20 overs and getting >60% of the team runs, that’s got to go down as one of the best IT20 innings of all time if England win.

Wow great recovery by England. This team is championship ready.

Eng vs Pak Final feels almost destined at this point.

England are clear favourites to win the cup at this point. Their batting has immense power and depth. I do think you can get at their bowlers however. Definitely the strongest side in this world cup.

Wow!! What an innings by Jos Butter. What a player!!

A shout out to Hasaranga as well, definately a big star in the making for Sri Lanka.

Ball coming onto the bat very nicely now. A far cry from England's first 12 overs.
