England (415/9d) defeat SA (151 & 179) by an innings & 85 runs to win the 2nd Test; Series Level 1-1

England announced their playing XI for the second Test of the series against South Africa in Manchester.

Ollie Robinson replaced Matty Potts in the only change from Lord's for England in their playing XI for the second Test of the series against the Proteas.

Potts, who took two wickets in the first Test, which England lost by an innings and 12 runs, wasn't picked in the XI, but out-of-form opener Zak Crawley retains his place with the hosts looking to draw level in the series.

England XI for the second Test: Zak Crawley, Alex Lees, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow, Ben Stokes (c), Ben Foakes, Stuart Broad, Jack Leach, Ollie Robinson, James Anderson.

Robinson's last appearance was in the fifth and final Ashes Test in Hobart in January, but the fast bowler has had a remarkable start to his Test career, taking 39 wickets in nine Tests at an average of 21.28.

The series, which is a part of the ICC World Test Championship cycle, has crucial points at stake. South Africa, who are table toppers, will aim to continue their winning run to ensure a place in the finals of the WTC next year. England, meanwhile, are seventh with a 31.37% win rate.

Joe Root insists England won't change their approach for the second LV= Insurance Test against South Africa at Emirates Old Trafford, despite the hosts slipping to a heavy defeat at Lord's last week.

England's batters lasted a combined 82.4 overs in the innings-and-12-run loss, bowled out for 165 in their first innings before crumbling to 149 all out in their second.

The loss was England's first since Ben Stokes took over from Root as Test captain and Brendon McCullum arrived as head coach, with the team having swept to a 3-0 series win over New Zealand before then beating India in the rearranged fifth Test from their 2021 series.

"We just didn't execute as well as we could have - across the board really," Root told Sky Sports when reflecting on the team's first defeat of the summer.

"Credit has to go to South Africa. They took full advantage of the conditions that were presented to them and they outplayed us.

"You've got to take that on the chin. But I don't think it changes anything in the way that we approach this week.

"I think we've come a very long way in a short space of time as a Test team. From where we were at the start of this year, to the way we played in the first four Test matches of the summer, it's a massive stride forward.

"It's really important that we continue that good work, the changes that we've made in terms of our mindset.

"We've got to really hammer that home this week when the opportunity arises."

Root added: "We all know where we need to improve. It's about going out there and managing those certain situations as best we can.

"Similarly, we have to keep looking for opportunities to put them back under pressure."

South Africa haven't won at Old Trafford since 1955 but they've done themselves a big favour at the toss as this ground generally favours teams batting first.

That said there's some cloud cover this morning.

South Africa win the toss and bat

South Africa captain Dean Elgar has not been dissuaded by the grey clouds overhead. He wants to make first use of this pitch. Incidentally, Ben Stokes wanted to bowl first so everyone is happy!

Teams:

South Africa (Playing XI): Dean Elgar(c), Sarel Erwee, Keegan Petersen, Aiden Markram, Rassie van der Dussen, Kyle Verreynne(w), Simon Harmer, Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, Lungi Ngidi

England (Playing XI): Alex Lees, Zak Crawley, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow, Ben Stokes(c), Ben Foakes(w), Stuart Broad, Ollie Robinson, Jack Leach, James Anderson

Two spinners for South Africa ! They reckon this pitch will wear and take turn. There were some cracks visible at the pitch report.

Simon Harmer has tons of county experience so shouldn't have difficulty adjusting to conditions.

South Africa side to face England

The Proteas' four-pronged pace attack has been split up in Manchester with the towering Marco Jansen left out and Essex off-spinner Simon Harmer picked instead.

Good to see Robbo back. He should get the new ball. Relegate Draco to third seamer.

135 kph from Robbo. Needs to be around that pace to be effective. Not the 127 kph rubbish he settled into during the last Ashes.

Erwee was struggling to line them up. Got beaten a few times on the outside edge and gets done on the inside.

Excellent start by England. Plenty in the surface, just what the doctor ordered for the England seamers.

Pace Bowling Average on Day 1 in Tests since 2015:

Old Trafford - 53.82
Edgbaston - 34.93
Southampton - 33.00
Trent Bridge - 30.28
The Oval - 28.64
Lord's - 26.73
Headingley - 22.17

Good setup, Elgar gone too.

Reckon South Africa will have done okay if they reach lunch without losing more than 3 in these testing conditions. It will get brighter this afternoon.

WICKET! Petersen c Root b Broad 21 - South Africa 41-3

and Petersen too

Petersen looked decent but he goes too. Dig in time for Markram and Van der Dussen - just get through to lunch.

A bit surprised that South Africa decided to bat first.

I think they should've bowled first as it is their main strength; also, condition seems good for bowling.

WICKET! Markram c Foakes b Stokes 14 - South Africa 68-4

How about that? Ben Stokes put himself into the attack, and two balls later gets England's fourth wicket.

He smiles as a seemingly harmless delivery is skied by Markram before landing into the hands of Foakes for a routine catch. England will take that all day long.

Awful dismissal from Markram. He's been backed on potential but an average of 34 after 32 Tests is very underwhelming.

With two spinners (Harmer replacing Jansen) looks like they are expecting some deterioration as the test goes on.

SA needs above 200 from here I believe but, with a long tail it wont be easy.

76 for 5 and already in trouble South Africa.

Some good bowling but they batted as if they were facing the legendary West Indies pace bowling quartet.

OT can take spin later on. England should look to a big lead in the first innings as I doubt Bazball works on a Bunsen.

Very interesting graphic on Sky. There was 1° of seam movement this morning.

There was also 1° of seam movement in the first session of Day 1 in the England-Pakistan Test here at OT in 2020.

SAF are 77-5 after 25 overs at lunch; PAK were 53-2 after 25 overs at lunch on Day 1. We did well to negotiate the English bowlers that day, sadly we didn't capitalise.

Kumar: South Africa could have been more aggressive

Kumar Sangakkara: "The quality of the England seam attack today, they asked questions, but at the same time they didn't really go searching too much for wickets.

"When you're a batter in these conditions you know you're going to get out, but the question is did South Africa commit enough to scoring areas?

"Elgar missed a couple that there, there were short and wide deliveries, but again I think it was a morning that showed when England do bowl well in conditions that support them they are a very difficult side to get on top of."

Had South Africa bowled first, they could've blown away England for 200-250. After that, they could've taken a lead (just like in first Test).

Tactical blunder perhaps.

SA - 83/5 (25.4 overs).

Whilst i understand there is seam and swing here early on 4 out of 5 SA batters got starts so its been a poor effort. Yes england have bowled well but SA shouldnt be 5 down here.

There is a pride flag in the stadium flying elegantly. This could lead to trouble if some players complain about it.
Cricket England should keep such stuff away from sport. Can give rise to unnecessary controversy.

SA - 92/7 (31 overs).

Getting worse for them.

Their Test batting seems mediocre. Only bowling is world class.

Broad needs 5 more wickets to surpass McGrath and become #5 among all-time highest wicket-takers.

100 is up for SA.

100/7 (35.1 overs).

Need to reach 200 to make a game out of it.

Over 37 - South Africa 104-7 (Rabada 7, Verreynne 20)

Looks like a bad decision to bat first.

WICKET! Verreynne c Foakes b Broad 21 - South Africa 108-8

Make that 8 wickets down.

151 is a very poor total in these conditions after winning the toss and choosing to bat.

Then again, England might do even worse.

Pope bowled to leave England 34-2 against SA

England slip to 43-3 in reply to SA's 151

England holding on - another 20/30 runs and they will feel much more confident

England 98-3 (Bairstow 31, Crawley 11) Trail by 53 runs

England are on top now. Stumps for Day 1.

ENG - 111/3 (28 overs).

Trailing by just 40 runs.

Bairstow and Crawley put England on top

Bairstow has been particularly impressive with the bat with Crawley backing him up with 17 from 77 balls.

England excelled with the ball in hand before South Africa struck back, but an unbeaten half-century stand has given England the edge at stumps on day one.

South Africa struggle after opting to bat

South Africa opted to bat first in Manchester after winning the toss and soon found themselves in trouble, losing Sarel Erwee to James Anderson, playing his 100th home Test in the fifth over. Stuart Broad then went on to bowl a terrific spell, dismissing Dean Elgar and Keegan Petersen in quick succession to leave South Africa at 41/3.

Earlier, the visitors made a bold call in the playing XI, bringing in a second spinner in Simon Harmer, replacing Marco Jansen, whose valuable contributions with the bat at Lord's were missed later in the day.

Stokes and Anderson puts England firmly on top

South Africa were left with Aiden Markram and Rassie van der Dussen, two batters not in the greatest run of form in red-ball cricket, to revive the innings. Skipper Ben Stokes ensured that wasn't happening by dismissing the duo in back-to-back overs.

Markram top-edged a pull off Stokes in his very first over to be dismissed for 14. Van der Dussen was trapped in front in Stokes' next over, missing a delivery that nipped back in sharply off the seam.

Post the lunch break, Anderson sent back Simon Harmer and Keshav Maharaj off successive deliveries to leave South Africa at 92/7. Broad soon sent back the last recognised batter in Kyle Verreynne to grab his 800th international wicket.

Rabada and Nortje fight back

The visitors needed the tail to step up and Rabada led the fight with some counterattacking shots. He was ably supported by a composed Anrich Nortje, blocking off anything aimed at the stumps and leaving everything else.

The duo survived 12 overs till tea, putting up a partnership that frustrated England and gave the Proteas a glimmer of hope after an ordinary showing from the batting line-up.

Ollie Robinson, though, struck immediately after tea, sending back Nortje and Rabada eventually miscued one slog to slips off Jac Leach to end South Africa's innings.

'Bazball' returns

South Africa struck back with the new ball with Lungi Ngidi sending back Alex Lees early on in the second over, the delivery jagging away off the seam to catch the edge.

Nortje, who came in as first-change bowler, cleaned up Ollie Pope while Kagiso Rabada sent back Joe Root for his third successive single-digit score in the series.

At 43/3, England's batting looked vulnerable yet again before Jonny Bairstow, aided by some wayward bowling from the visitors, pulled things back in the company of a resolute Zak Crawley.

The unbeaten 68-run stand came off 88 balls and helped England reduce the deficit considerably by stumps.

England’s day, you would say they want at least 250 here to get a 100+ lead.

20 extras given away by South Africa already, including 10 wides. Bit messy.

Captaincy F to Elgar. First, toss decision. Second, leaving out Marco Jansen. Bairstow = Bazball. Take him out this team would bat like boycott.

Funny how cricket goes. Particularly Test cricket. South Africa and Elgar had their perfect game at Lord’s. Whereas today at Old Trafford there was a lot of poor decision making and almost everything went wrong for them. It’s only Day 1, but on the back of a disastrous defeat last week England have seemingly got themselves back into the series here.

Such a good partnership. Hopefully this pair can add a few more and help England towards a bit of a useful lead.

South Africa need to make sure that they keep England lead under 100.South Africa need to take it to bat 4

Anderson: England's bowlers were 'relentless'

England seamer James Anderson on South Africa being rolled in just 53.2 overs after electing to bat...

"The lights were on, it was cloudy... it felt like not the worst toss to lose. As a bowler, when you see it moving around like that, it's always great.

"We know the weather has been pretty average here this last week. There was definitely going to be some moisture in there somewhere but you still have to bowl well.

"We just thought of trying to bash away at good areas for as long as possible. I thought we were just relentless with our areas after lunch and everyone who bowled, bowled superbly."

Bairstow and Crawley put England on top

Bairstow has been particularly impressive with the bat with Crawley backing him up with 17 from 77 balls.

lcimg-df35ce3e-79f2-4576-b430-5c9265dde3cb.jpg

With the sun shining at Emirates Old Trafford, England will hope to turn that 40-run deficit into a substantial lead...

Bairstow out to Nortkje.

A great opportunity for Creepy here.....

Fantastic bowling from these Saffers, swinging it both ways at pace. Very hard for England.

WICKET! Crawley c Verreynne b Nortje 38 - England 147-5

That is an absolute beauty from Nortje. He lures the finest of outside edges from Crawley that carries through to Verreynne in a flash to send the England man on his way.

A disappointing end to the innings for Crawley, but not much he can do there.

Bazball needed now!

Over 40 - England 170-5 (Stokes 13, Foakes 13) - LEAD BY 19

England are in a decent position in a low-scoring game. 170-5.

Running away with it now, England

Over 49 - England 197-5 (Stokes 28, Foakes 25) - LEAD BY 49

Rabada back into the attack as South Africa look to try and break up this partnership, which reaches 50 between Stokes and Foakes.

A return to proper test cricket, as Stokes and Foakes (if only Woakes could come on as a runner!) wear down the Saffer fast men.

100 run lead would be match winning one for england here.

Strong position for England. 130-140 lead will to much for this flaky south african batting.

Leaving out the impressive Jansen for Harmer is proving to be a shocking decision.

212 for 5 at Lunch England.

A lead of 61.

England looking good for a lead of 150 plus.

Athers: England in strong position

Michael Atherton: "It's a good position (for England), I think if South Africa are going to get anything out of the game they'll need to bowl England out in the next session and restrict that lead.

"If England can get through to tea and maybe a bit beyond that would be a really commanding position then."

England are looking good to win this one.

England - 212/5 (56 overs).

Leading by 61 runs.

A return to proper test cricket, as Stokes and Foakes (if only Woakes could come on as a runner!) wear down the Saffer fast men.

Apart from Bairstow all the others are far less aggressive. Bairstow created an illusion that entire team is adopting a gold standard. in the last 12 months India goes at 3.50 per over, England goes at 3.46 per over in Tests both of which are less than Australia's 3.74 during the substantial part of 2000s. Entire line up used to be aggressive. Often would go at 4 an over.
