England (507/9d & 185/6d) draw the 2nd Test against West Indies (411 & 135/5) in Bridgetown

England won the toss and opted to bat first

West Indies: 1 Kraigg Brathwaite (capt), 2 John Campbell, 3 Shamarh Brooks, 4 Nkrumah Bonner, 5 Jermaine Blackwood, 6 Jason Holder, 7 Joshua da Silva (wk), 8 Alzarri Joseph, 9 Kemar Roach, 10 Veerasammy Permaul, 11 Jayden Seales

England: 1 Alex Lees, 2 Zak Crawley, 3 Joe Root (capt), 4 Dan Lawrence, 5 Ben Stokes, 6 Jonny Bairstow, 7 Ben Foakes (wk), 8 Chris Woakes, 9 Matthew Fisher, 10 Saqib Mahmood, 11 Jack Leach

Two players making Test debuts for England today: Saqib Mahmood and Matthew Fisher.

Jayden Seales has even less FC experience than Naseem Shah, but look at his control and ability to move the ball both ways.

Excellent prospect.

England scoring slowly and Root has got away with one — should have been given out caught behind or at the very least fallen prey to a DRS review.

Not sure if it is the cloudy and windy conditions in Barbados today or something in the pitch, or perhaps the West Indies are just bowling extremely well, but England are finding this tough after winning the toss and seeming to make the correct decision.

ENG slightly the happier after that first session. Good toss to win, definitely a bat first pitch.

Can understand Alex Lees wanting to stick around after the failures in Antigua and it being his debut tour, but needs up the scoring rate after lunch.

Bit more pace and bounce on this track, already a few footmarks for the spinners to exploit, but no real demons.

57 . 1

36 overs

Very slow batting , but they are looking to get a big first innings total

England seem to have had a discussion about top order collapses and are determined not to produce another one here.

Very boring test match so far , these kind of games are harming Test too much, just no action.

Lees gone for a decidedly turgid 30, but it served a purpose of sorts.

Root looking comfortable on 61* — he will easily be able to get century number 25 today unless he makes an unforced error.

The scoring rate is starting to climb now.

5 runs per over for the ongoing partnership between Root and Lawrence.

England seem to be tactically wearing down the West Indies bowlers in the heat, with the intent of cashing in on their fatigue during tonight’s evening session.

Root regained his mojo after a small gap apparently

Larwance is impressive ,he always plays in positive manner

Dan Lawrence is going along like a train!

44 off 51 so far.

Good idea to position him as a dominant number four.

Root doing very well at three also.

A really poor over there from Alzarri Joseph. 16 off it including three boundaries and two no balls. Not his best bowling at all.

40 runs off the 7 overs since tea.

No balls, misfields, and boundaries galore.

Wheels coming off for the Windies.

number 4 slot might be ideal longterm for lawrence.

Lawrence misses out on a ton right at the end. But England in a solid position.

Joe Root punished West Indies with yet another century as England took command of the second Test on day one in Barbados.

Root could have been given caught behind on 23 and was dropped on 34 but ended 119 not out - his 25th Test ton and second in as many innings as the tourists closed on 244-3.

England's ascendancy was checked slightly by the loss of Dan Lawrence to end the day, after he compiled a dazzling 91.

Lawrence had looked on course for his maiden Test ton after combining with Root for a brilliant, aggressive stand of 164, but chipped Jason Holder to extra cover in the final over.

Root had laid a platform with Alex Lees, who made 30 from 138 balls, after opener Zak Crawley was caught behind for a duck in the fourth over.

The late wicket boosted West Indies who had otherwise been wasteful on another flat pitch.

The tourists earlier handed debuts to Saqib Mahmood and fellow seamer Matt Fisher - the latter a late replacement for Craig Overton who was ruled out with illness.

Late wicket takes shine off England's day

Until Lawrence was dismissed, England were heading towards a near-perfect day.

Their captain had scored another stunning century and Lawrence, one of the young batters given a chance in this series after the Ashes humiliation, had played his best Test knock to date.

But the 24-year-old, perhaps with three figures on his mind and having cracked the two previous deliveries for four, went hard at a ball from Holder outside off and offered a catch. It would have been the penultimate ball of the day.

Holder celebrated wildly as West Indies, who had been average for the majority of the day, hit back.

Lawrence, in contrast, had to drag himself from the field as the thousands of England fans he had earlier roused applauded.

England are still well in control but the nature of the pitch means a score close to 400 will likely be par.

West Indies, having limited the scoring in the first part of the day, will now hope to keep England below that.

Root delivers again

Root's latest ton is his eighth in 19 Tests since the start of 2021, a stunning run of form in which he has fought almost single-handedly to keep his side's batting line-up afloat.

Having come in at 4-1, he looked supreme from the outset, cracking a pull shot for four from his ninth ball and driving perfectly through the covers soon after.

His second-innings 109 in the Antigua draw was chanceless. In Barbados, on a similarly flat pitch, he did offer two chances, but errors saw him reprieved.

First he appeared to inside edge onto his pad and into the gloves of wicketkeeper Joshua da Silva but umpire Nigel Duguid was unmoved following a half-hearted West Indies appeal.

The fact the hosts had wasted an optimistic lbw review moments earlier will have influenced their decision not to challenge the decision.

His second life came soon after lunch when he tickled Kemar Roach down the leg-side. Da Silva got one glove to the ball but could not hold on.

From there Root did not look back. Spurred on by Lawrence, he became increasingly fluent, scoring in his trademark areas - off his pads and through the covers.

Importantly, he has played another captain's innings as his side make their quiet steps on the road to recovery following their Ashes defeat.

Lawrence dazzles after Lees digs in

If Root's runs have become commonplace, England fans witnessed what could become part of their new era in the batting of Lees and Lawrence.

Lees made four and six on debut in Antigua, out lbw to Roach on both occasions, but here hinted at why England have chosen him as their latest Test opener.

The Durham left-hander was stubborn in a gritty knock that did not catch the eye but did serve a purpose in seeing off the new ball.

Lees and Root scored 80 runs in the first 45 overs before Lees fell lbw to Veerasammy Permaul when playing off the back foot. Root and Lawrence added 164 in the next 44.5 overs, at least in part because of the platform provided.

In comparison, Lawrence was imposing throughout, the highlight a wristy, flicked six off Permaul.

He cantered to his fifty from 62 balls and had slowed towards the close, only for the rush of blood to be his undoing.

'We are in a commanding position' - reaction

England assistant coach Marcus Trescothick: "A very good day. To win the toss and take full advantage of winning it we are very pleased with where we are. We are in a commanding position. Hopefully we can come back tomorrow and pile on more runs

"The two of them together, the partnership was really nice. It was great to watch. Joe was his disciplined self and Dan gave it a little bit of flair. He deserved a hundred."

BBC cricket correspondent Jonathan Agnew: "The partnership between Joe Root and Dan Lawrence is the best England have seen this winter.

"Root will grab the headlines, but Lawrence was just as eye-catching until his late dismissal. Lawrence played beautifully, he deserved a hundred."

Brilliant day for England. Not often recently that England win the toss, bat first, and bat well.

Should get at the very least 400 (hopefully 450) which would be a good first innings score.

Can be used as a platform to control the rest of this game.

Stokes is changing gears here , England looking to get runs here and declare at some point today

England playing beautifully.

A joy to follow this (for once!) as an England fan.

ENG 507/9 d
WI 14/1 (1.2) CRR: 10.5
Day 2: 3rd Session - West Indies trail by 493 runs

Ben Stokes' swashbuckling century lit up day two of the second Test between England and West Indies in Barbados.

Captain Joe Root progressed to 153 while Stokes bullied the West Indies bowling to score 120 from 128 balls in England's 507-9 declared.

Stokes added 89 runs in the morning session alone, dominating a century stand with Root, and reached his 11th Test ton shortly after lunch.

The all-rounder hit 11 fours and six powerful sixes before he was eventually caught trying hit part-time spinner Kraigg Brathwaite over the ropes again.

After England declared in the final session, having passed 500 for the first time in 13 months, debutant seamer Matthew Fisher had John Campbell caught behind with his second delivery in international cricket.
But Brathwaite, who ended unbeaten on 28, and Shamarh Brooks, with 31 not out, saw West Indies through to 71-1 at the close.

That still leaves the hosts 436 runs behind, with England in command on a good batting pitch, but one that is starting to offer support to the spinners

This must be the first time England have scored 500+ in a hundred years.

A very good toss to win. The weather is set fair and the pitch is beginning to break up. With the ball clearly turning for Jack Leach and some early signs of variable bounce, England have enough runs on the board to create a significant amount of pressure today. Joe Root should have a bowl as well. If England can be back in there batting again either before the close tonight, or even late tomorrow morning, they’ll be in a great position to win the match.

Play resumes for Day 3 in just over half an hour.

7 further fascinating hours of cricket ahead.

Our perennial “unlikely lad” Jack Leach will have a big role to play in the remainder of this Test match I’m thinking.

Really surprised that Stokes and Root didn’t at least punt on the review for that latest LBW appeal, looked totally dead. (and was.)

England were brilliant in that session.

Created insane pressure.

The review usage the only flaw.

West Indies in a hole.

50 from Braithwaite :14:

Solid knock , but he needs to make this a really big one for WI to save this game.

WI need to come as close as possible to England total here

Like the look of saqib and Fisher, excellent skill set with control, on a quicker wicket they could be a handful

Leach bowling a long spell here , I think at some point of time Root will be used for few overs as well.

Good to see that West Indies aren't just rolling over and collapsing against England.

Digging in and putting up a decent fight.

WI are not out of woods here , They still trail by 285 runs , long way to go before they are safe.

Another disgraceful cricket "pitch". Paid £25 for BT for this :((

Some dogged resistance by West Indies here.

Bad mistake from Saq Mahmood overstepping, for his maiden wicket that wasn’t.

Pretty dead pitch to be fair. Nothing in it

This game reminds me of a Test from 2002. Antigua 2002 (India vs West Indies).

That was a very slow Test just like this one. Ended in a draw.

Whats the point of this match?
A 100 of almost 300 balls?!?!

Test cricket being harmed in a big way.

I prefer a dustbowl or a green mamba over this and the pak vs aus wickets.

4 down. Dan Lawrence picks up a wicket of Blackwood.

Blackwood lbw b Lawrence 102 (215b 11x4 0x6) SR: 47.44

A dogged unbeaten century from Kraigg Brathwaite and Jermaine Blackwood's 102 blunted England on day three of the second Test in Barbados.

Brathwaite batted all day, combining with Blackwood for a stand of 183 as West Indies ground their way to 288-4 at the close, trailing by 219 runs.

That partnership thwarted England for 68.3 overs until Blackwood misjudged a leave to part-time off-spinner Dan Lawrence and was out lbw with five overs to go.

After claiming two early wickets, England struggled to create opportunities and the tourists wasted the rare chances they created.

Blackwood would have been out for a duck had England reviewed an lbw decision and on 65 he was bowled by a Saqib Mahmood no-ball, which would have been the debutant's first Test wicket. There was also a missed stumping chance when Brathwaite was on 109.

As a result, like the series opener in Antigua, the Test already looks to be heading towards a draw, despite Lawrence's late intervention.

West Indies should bat whole day tomorrow (if they can).

This Test is heading toward a boring draw.
