What's new

England (657 & 264/7d) defeat Pakistan (579 & 268) by 74 runs to win the 1st Test in Rawalpindi

I am rooting for the day Saqlain is fired and Babar's is stripped off his captaincy.

I hope nobody applauses Pakistan if they happen to draw this. There is nothing to be happy about if that happens and they only deserve scorn from this.

England deserve to win this game, as much as a coward like Babar deserves to lose.

Unbelievable batting so far, just dead batting everything coming their way in the face of average bowling.

If you are Pakistan captain or coach or selector you are used to this .

I have lost all the respect for Babar Azam as a cricketer, no matter how good of a batsman he is. He has disappointed me big time.

Anyone remember the 7th T20 series deciding match where Pakistan lost early wickets and literally went into a shell to play out 20 overs instead of being aggressive whatsoever.

Just a total loser team with loser players in every format of the game.

There is no honor in playing this way. I’m not even sure what’s the point of this innings, just dead batting every single delivery no matter what.

I hope England find seven deliveries to rub their faces into the ground.

Yup I hope England wins the game. Rooting for England

If they don't start scoring runs now, I hope we go back to the old days of vegetable chucking at these fools.

They needed 260 runs from 90 overs. Which buffoon decided that dead-batting 90 overs is easier than scoring those runs on this pitch?

With only newish batsman Agha and in pain Azhar to come Pakistan have all but lost this match, and even epic Tuk Tuk will not save them. England deserves to win.

England have bowled well this morning but no bowling side should be allowed to go at less than a run a ball like this. It just piles on more pressure because the field stays in for longer and the bowlers have more margin for error.

Just following the scorecard.
What changed? Now they're scoring runs

Rizwan doing ok.
Made sure wickets didn't fall in a cluster. Got himself in. Now expanding vs the spinners.

No point losing this in the first hour. If Pakistan win it will be a long, slow grind down of the bowlers. You can't race your way to 250 on Day 5.

You've got to just stay in it and force the bowlers to toil and tire.

Those three boundaries by Rizwan helps the runs column , it was looking very very pathetic till then.

I think Tactic was to see out first hour without losing any wicket, tgough they lost Imam, whilst assessing thepitch bwhaviour today and then play normally.

If one of these 2 can go on to make a big hundred, Pakistan can win this. Advantage England atm

Good to see someone understands Test cricket.

Basically the seamers came off and spinners came on.

Both batsmen -sensibly- took an over each to assess how the spinners/pitch were playing today and then started to play a few more shots.

What's the story on Azhar?

If he bats can we expect him to be able to play properly or is it a break and expect him to almost be playing with one hand and maybe just try hold an end up?

All teams do it but it doesn't mean to score less than one run peri over, minimum they needed 2 rpo as you have to put some pressure back on other team otherwise you are just waiting for the ball with your name, you think all of us are fools, who were bashing this timid approach, no one was asking them to bat like England, but is asking to bat sensibly around 2. 5 to 3 rpo is too much?

Shot! Six towards long off by Riz. Now Shakeel with a four.... Pakistan going for it

So Pakistan has lowest average for spinners in tests in 4th innings.
Pakistan never prepare spinning pitches unlike a certain team.

If he bats, it will surely be to block it out. They even showed him doing some practice at warmup and the injury was clearly bothering him.

I think I saw an update on here that he can bat.

They may have sent Rizwan up the order because Azhar is not really a go getter when it comes to scoring at a higher then a normal SR. Referring to his normal ofc.

No I do not think anyone is a fool just impatient. England seamers bowled very accurately and these two bowlers are also accurate bowlers anyhow, losing Imam early put the usial conservative Pakistani batters into their shell. I agreewith you their approach is not a good one but Pakitsna have a very long tail and one batsman who is on his last leg now with painful hand too. So I understand their approach

Yes. Instead you produced some of the worst highways with nothing in it for any bowlers and still managed to lose a home series . :)

LoL India tops the list without any doubt and Pakistan is right at the bottom.
India is known for those dust bowls which start turning from the very first ball.

Good strategy to ruthlessly attack the spinners. This will force Stokes to operate the pacers non stop and they will eventually tire and run out of steam. Will force him to put the fielders back as well.

174 runs to get.

Try getting 100 runs in the next session with minimum risks and with minimum losses ( if any )

Post Tea Session, there could be 18-20 overs in the match. Try to achieve 74 runs in last 18-20 overs.

Rizwans approach is good but if gets dismissed while taking too many risks then England would end up winning here.

Day 5 - Session 1: Pakistan need 174 runs.

Pak 169/3 (52 ov) & 579
Eng 657 & 264/7d

Hard to imagine after day 2 that this match would have such a fascinating conclusion. It has largely been manufactured by England’s cavalier tactics but there was an element of arrogance in that, which they might rue if they end up losing having scored 650. They still deserve credit for at least trying to make it interesting.

What is the point of Livingstone in this match? Can’t he bowl leg spin?

100% spot on, pakistan need another solid wicket less session and score at above 3 an over so they can try and have a go in last session.

He’s out for the rest of the tour. I don’t think he can bowl with the injury either else he would’ve been used over Root.

Ideally wicket less but they can afford one wicket loss, and on runs side they need minimum 85 runs in next session, so they need no more than 90 runs and 6 wickets in hand, ideally if they can score 100 in next session and that too with no more loss than it would be very easy chase for last session with 75 runs needed with 7 wickets in hand, will be almost 90% certain Pak victory in that case. But with Pak you can never say Never.

Problem for Pakistan is there's hardly any batting left apart from Agha Salman.

One more wicket and it could all be over pretty quickly.

These two need to keep going another session atleast.

England decision to declare will haunt them. Sometime over confident is harmful. pitch look like a 3rd day subcontinent pitch which is decent to score . Which sane captain will declare which so much over to spare and with this total. May be they have underestimated Pakistan and over estimated themselves. I'm watching cricket since early 90,s this is the most schocking declaration i have seen considering the behaviour of pitch

Not over yet. These two need to see it home. Can't trust Azhar or Agha to finish this under pressure.

Enjoying this Pak England rivalry. Close t20 series, solid WC final, and now a close first test so far, iA we win.

Hope it’s a good series.

It’s cool that we are fighting hard with arguably the world’s most skilled team across formats. Probably not #1 in tests, but top 3 in tests for sure.

It won't haunt them because this match doesn't mean much for them. They aren't getting to the WTC so from their perspective, experimenting is beneficial.

England are just 1 wicket away from exposing the tail. Azhar if bats wont be 100 percent. We may get another 45 to 50 overs before bad light comed into play. Scoring @ 4 wont be put cup of tea either.

Even if we accept that, you still have to play really well on turners to have the kind of home record that India has. If PCB/PAK team had enough guts to create a turner, we would see whether Pakistan can create a similar record. :)

You’re looking at this through a very limited lens. It’s a declaration for Test cricket and for both sets of fans. Because of England’s tactics with the bat and with the declaration, we have a game.

We would've won atleast 10 test series since 2010 if he had played with this Zimbambe Plate team

I think Saud is all hype. The defensiveness of his batting on a flat track against a tired attack shows his intent. Why don’t we have any free flowing aggressive batsman

Someone needs to play a blinder/cameo and go for the counter attack
