What's new

England beat Pakistan by 3 wickets in the first Test at Manchester in a close encounter

Shaheen has been a bit of a disappointment in this test to be honest

Definitely looks down on pace. Thought he bowled alright first hour yesterday but perhaps it takes longer for a big, tall guy like him after several months off to get his legs pumping again and find match rhythm.

There is no conspiracy or bias. It was and still is about consistency. And that’s not consistency in terms of the human umpire but potential revision of definition of clipping vs hitting and it being accepted by all.

Exactly

The decision still isn't fair to Rizwan and now Burns is added to that loooong list but... life's not fair, mate.

It's a serious debate though. Umpire's call is frustrating always.

The decision was completely fair to Rizwan. He didn't hit a ball that was hitting the stumps and hit him in line therefore was out LBW to an excellent umpiring decision.

I thoght of posting same.
Yesterday some posters called biased umpiring

Those posters are foolish. Kettleborough has just been having an awful summer all round. Gave Burns not out in the first innings and then gave Root out a couple of overs later. Both were howlers that were rightly overturned.

NS has bowled some good ones. Need to make sure he bowls with control.

Root in 4th inngs chases
27 inngs
769 runs
Avg 34.95
5 X 50s
HS 87
He averages 46+ in the other three innings of Tests.

:)), see.

Now no one is gonna discuss that

Holding seems to be against the concept of umpire’s call. Seems pretty reasonable to me — if there is an element of doubt with the technology, defer to the decision of the on-field umpire.

So will Holding and our fans cry about this decision like they did over Rizwan’s?

We were told that this umpire is biased towards England.

Thats the problem with having non-neutral umpires.

Cannot be thinking of starting on leg and swinging it to off or past the edge. Not that much on offer.

Keep it tight boys.

No umpire would 100% give it out and that's the whole debate.

Rory burns technique is not good enough for an opener, that leg which comes across and then goes nowhere: against true pace and pretty much all types of deviation (off the pitch or in the air), he'll be a prime candidate for lbw.

Nasser Hussain when he talked about Abdul Qadir how great he was, Wasim Akram started saying 'when I played my cricket', Nasser quickly said 'man comes in for Dominic Sibley' and changed the topic.
:)))

Not a very attacking field? I really don’t know if we want that point sweeper defending 244?

Again, that single to midwicket is not a high risk turn off the bat? Why concede that? One man out on leg side is fine.

Thats cause field changed and nasser wanted to show the field change.

Except the umpire was convinced that it was out and it was shown to be hitting the stumps. The fact is was a tight call just makes it an even better decision.

I am a firm believer that DRS should be kept with umpires only - on field umpires to take the call and if he is not sure, he can check it with 3rd umpire. And, if there is a blunder by on-field umpires, 3rd umpire can review before the next ball and suggest the main umpires. After that, if still anyone is unlucky, it’s part of the game. DRS should never be with the players.

He plants it sooo far across and with that backlift anyone touching 135 will trouble him.

Going against Cricviz here, but England slight favourites for me at this stage, arguably 55-45.

Pakistan have wasted the new ball.

"Michael Holding yest brought up a very valid question on air questioning how sometimes the lbw decision where the ball is clipping the top of the stumps is given out and sometimes not out with umpires call the decisive factor - lack of consistency there - something for the ICC to look into?" I think it's just something we have to live with, Summer Joe. Can't expect all umpires to have exactly the same assumptions about what's clipping and what isn't

I think ENG are in a good position. I think if they were told this overnight, they would have taken it. Azhar’s been..... OK but could do better.

Holding was right you have to be consistent , either give it outfor both teams or none. Today I guess he tried to be less biased after listening to Holding comments. Btw he does appear to be very good umpire. I think in WI series he had about 5 decisons overturned in first match alone.

Since debuting in Test cricket, nobody has passed 50 balls faced in an innings on more occasions than Dom Sibley, who's now done so on 12 occasions.

If YS can get into his rhythm before conceding 30 that would be good.

Plug the off side gap man, that’s an easy single. Doesn’t need leg side sweeper either.

Yes certainly.

Pakistan still in a strong position in my opinion but it just depends on what's going on in their heads. England even being 100/1 can easily lose the test provided Pakistan has the self belief to win.

Joe Root badly needs motivation. Someone needs to play English version of Teri Mitti at Old Trafford.

Root doesn't have any issues technically or with specific conditions, he really should have more 100s for a player with his ability.

My first impression is - Yasir is bowling too fast. May be early hours and he needs a bit time to settle, but he has still 240+ to defend, the lefti opener is gone and it’s a turners track, must give more air - he is bowling like 83-86KM, should bring it to like 79k level. Faster one should be a surprise ball, not stock one.

Great test of Azhar Ali’s as a Pakistan captain.
1) How he uses Yasir Shah-Shadab Khan
2) Giving short spells to Naseem Shah & Shaheen Afridi
3) Getting Abbas for Stokes (will he come round the wicket) & getting him to bowl long spells

Copied.

I called it in 1st innings that the slips are deep. Not much carry even in 1st innings same thing happened.

Y r slips so deep honestly...first innings have they not learnt their lesson..scared of catching simple

Captaincy can never be considered if you are not performing as a player. Azhar needs to carry his own weight before he can appreciated for his captaincy.

Plug the gap on off-side, invite the drive and add another slip against YS?

I can't recall Yasir ever bowling less than 80kph, even when he's flighted it. Has been giving it a bit more flight in this over so far though

WK sets the depth of slip cordon - thumb rule is second slip parallel to WK, 1st slip two steps behind and 3rd slip one step ahead. Roughly connect 3 slips, gully & WK with a line -it should look like a hook. That was a genuine 1st slip’s catch.

One thing is for sure its not gonna be an easy paisa day for Eng

It’s not, but I think it can be made harder still. Some easy singles against YS. I know he’s not found his rhythm but still.

Just need someone to do the Shahid Afridi like swivel on the “danger zone” on the pitch and take match ban. Take one for the team. Come on AA.

He has bowled most of his overs in dead uae tracks, where you need to be a bit faster through air (otherwise even squire turners will be played by the batsmen for the slowness of tracks there) and his most wickets there been bowled/lbw, but this is a much better track for traditional leg spin, faster and a bit bounce on it. Here, leggi needs to bring batsman on front foot.

Pitch still looks very good. Bar abbas, shaheen and Naseem have not looked that threatening in this match

Good shot? Seemed to have caught the outer half of the bat and not deliberately. I would say a slightly streaky boundary, not fully in control

Archer watching Naseem ball and thinking which company made this robot.
