England in India 2016: Your assessment of Adil Rashid's performance?

Adil Rashid is currently the 2nd highest wicket taker in the series and in 7 innings from 5 games he has obtained 22 wickets at an average of 32.18.

In comparison to other leading spinners,

Ashwin: 27 wickets at 26.61
Jadeja: 19 wickets at 31.10

There has not been much discussion with regards to Rashid's performance so I thought I'd open a thread, surely those numbers are fantastic especially for a touring leg spinner; quiet frankly I doubt many had faith in his ability and were quick to point out how he was average during his debut series.

Very few are going to set the world on fire from the word go and finding specialist spinners since the retirement of Swann in England has been a challenge so from that perspective he has done the job for his country, with more experience and confidence from his team I expect Rashid to get better, he's put in a lot of hard work with Yorkshire over the years glad to see it paying off

I'm glad that the myth that Moeen is a better bowler than Rashid has finally been blown to pieces. Moeen of course is by far the better all-rounder but he is nothing more than a part-timer with the ball.

Rashid is still very raw but he is a wicket-taker and can run through teams on his day. Almost won England the Abu Dhabi Test as well, when he rallied on day 5.

There's a bit more consistency in his action. He's bowled with intent and will come out a better bowler after having bowled to the best players of spin.

Even if he bowled rubbish inbetween, he consistently produced deliveries that troubled the best of them.

However he was a bit flat at the Wankhede which was the only real turner of the series. However he was head and shoulders above any spinner from England and their best bowler as well. He bowled consistently good testing lines and lengths, Saqlain has done a world of good for his confidence. However I still feel he needs more confidence when he's bowling. I get the feeling that he performs great when there isn't much pressure on him and he is not expected to deliver, but gets affected by pressure when he is expected to lead the attack like on a bunsen burner where he gives away a bad ball every over which ends up affecting his morale.

However he is now England's lead spinner and will play a role in Australia. It is Moeen whose place has come under a bit of pressure. Of all the all rounders in the England team, Stokes is a very good 4th bowler who can be devastating with the bat on his day. So he is a genuine all rounder. Woakes makes the team as a bowler outside asia. Rashid makes the team as a bowler as he is their best spinner. Moeen whereas has been disappointing with the ball while being inconsistent with the bat. He plays a gem of an innings but plays Afridiesque shots in the next few innings which puts him under pressure. Moeen has to justify his place as a top 6 batsman if he is to remain in the team as bowling isn't his strongest suit. He has had a bit of a mixed year with the bat but needs to be more consistent with the bat to be a permanent selection in the team.

I know, but forget about this ton as it's a dead rubber (doesn't make it lesser but it doesn't impact the series result). But him and Cook came short in the last 3 matches after tons at Rajkot, which effectively ended up deciding the series. You can't win when 2 out of your top 4 fail with the other two being not great with the bat either. I know he had a great average against Sri Lanka and Pakistan and probably this series too but his problem has always been the consistency. Hit a wonderful ton against Lanka but the other scores were all low scores. Against Pakistan had a forgettable first two matches but came up with the goods in the laat two. In this series, he has played two great knocks in the first and last match but came up short in the middle three.

I do think he has done well despite his inconsistency, however his place might come under pressure if England find a solid middle order bat now that Rashid has replaced him as their premier spinner. Funnily enough, every time his place comes under a bit of pressure he comes and plays a gem of a knock to put all the questions to rest.

Rashid, along with the rest of the English bowling has been quite poor in India. His 32.18 average flatters him. He got quite a few of his wickets when batsmen tried to up the pace of scoring and started slogging. If they decided to play carefully he did not really threaten them.

The English batting has done okay in India. It is the failure of their bowling that has put them in a 0-3 hole. Quite often they got the top half of the Indian batting out relatively cheaply, only to have the second half take the game away from them. The bottom line is that all the English bowlers have been poor, and maybe Rashid has been the least poor.

He's done okay not as good people think. Has bowled better than he did in Bangladesh although that wasn't difficult as he was awful in Bangladesh

Pretty much what [MENTION=142162]Napa[/MENTION] posted didn't find him that great,also considering Moen troubled us in England but has been hardly good here ,I wonder if Indian batsmen have actually improved.

Also Swann,Panesar were great and they are the benchmark for any touring spinner in India to cross.

Moeen shouldn't be batting at 4 anyway. Bairstow should be there. Butler takes the gloves.

Quiet a few people consider(ed) Moeen a better bowler. I agree with your point.

Rashid is work in progress. I think, bowling in India should help him a lot and he should feel more confident. He gives a lot less hit me ball now. Leg spin takes a lot more control and they mature slowly. Eng needs to give him enough chance and he may come handy against Aus in their next series.

Rashid has been bowled to the ground by Cook in all tests so far.

The so called superstars in Anderson and Broad have been mothballed from the difficult conditions that the likes of Steyn and McGrath took as a challenge.

None of these English bowlers have done much in this series. Don't let these numbers fool anyone. I remember last time when England toured India, Monty Panesar bowled great and helped England win the series.

He's been quite good but needs a strong showing in this test to have a chance of being a permanent fixture in the test side, at least for the near future. Has a lot of potential but he can easily become demoralized so whoever his captain is, needs to treat him well.

In no shape or form a bowler who puts pressure on Indian batsmen.

he has shown signs of promise but has been completely mismanaged by Cook. Cook cant captain spinners at all.

He gives away far too many boundary balls to be a world class spinner in test cricket although he can improve on it.

I think he will be a better LOI spinner than a test spinner.

There are 2 ways to look at it:

Quality of bowling - He has improved by leaps and bounds....flights well...gets turn....is a good future prospect but needs work to be done.

Stats wise - His series numbers flatter him. He was the best spinner (and most impactful) in Rajkot...after that game, he has been unimpactful mostly and gets his wickets due to batsmen throwing it away after they have scored enough. Also a lot of them are from lower down the order cleaning the innings up wickets.

He has been a better wicket taker than them for sure.

But 3rd spinner would have to be tight and good with the bat for supporting role.

So I am afraid not.

Jayant was the find of the series for us. Helps us strength our team in both bowling and batting.
