So I just found out that India is hosting the Under 17 WC soon

While tbh not many care about it since only a few participants from this go to very top level I do believe that the fact it is in India makes it a huge step

hoepfully they put on a good show and it inspires kids in india

we really need south asian rep in WC soon

Cricket remains the most viewed sport in the sub continent. But India's participation in the world cup can possibly draw more people into following the beautiful game.Increase in the number of viewers has its own consequences.

Hosting a famous sporting event normally does good to the development of a country. For example, hosting the 1988 Olympics in Seoul kick started rapid development in Korea, something that the 2002 FIFA World Cup only accentuated. Again, this isn't a tournament on that scale, but it will create a lot of great facilities and make better progress in near future

India and China cannot qualify for FIFA WC directly, so FiFA offering hosting rights to such countries in Khairaat and hoping to get a slice of the countries economic rise.

It's the reason why even the FIFA WC has been expanded to 48 teams, they will keep tampering the qualification rules of the tournament to somehow let India and China qualify .

Hosting apart , I hope the team can pull off an upset . Tough group in US , Columbia and Ghana , would have prefered one other Asian country in the group

Going for Brazil Vs Spain U17 match in Kochi this weekend. Hoping my 150 rupees is not wasted...

im sure you spend 150 rs on a lot of random things

what is more valuable is time which can be wasted

Too SASTA a ticket this is (looking at the hype given to this tournament, although it's worth some hype)... But U-17 doesn't sound good for a viewer tbh... hoping that i get some time to watch some games in Delhi if my plan goes through.... When is Spain v Brazil (time & date).

Other than for scouting, it's a useless tournament for viewing purposes. For India, it's an opportunity to showcase their organizational skills. They do aspire to host Olympics so a little step in that direction.

Yep time is the major factor here more than money....

Our state is full of football crazy people. Add to that Brazil and Spain in a FIFA match for the first time in Kochi.:)

FIFA can try their hardest.

Football is not going to grow in India due to a multitude of factors.

What are you talking about? Even if a fraction of India's population starts taking football seriously, India could become one of the football crazy countries of the world! What's that league called where you have Cricketers owning different teams? I watched a couple of games and the crowds seemed huge.

Its worth every penny unless you are hoping for an indian win.

Generally in a teen WC the usual history of country doesn't matter much but still brazil will be a far superior side to india i guess.

Brazilian wonder kid vinicius jr who recently signed by real madrid will be missed their

Will support my Indian brothers over German team if they make it to the big league, will add spice to FIFA world cup matches

India never will be good in Soccer. You need more than just fraction of population. You also need funds, infrastructure, and fan following.
Most kids who are soccer fan are basically fan of European clubs and/or teams from Europe and South America. Ask them about local talent and hardly anyone would recognise them.
Soccer is still upper middle class game and it will remain so. Apart from few states, mass population do not care about soccer and never will as long as cricket is played.

You have no idea about the craze for european clubs on metros tier 1 and tier 2 cities.

thats two different things bro. What he is implying that India will never be good in soccer. Indians do love European clubs but thats about it. Investment in Indian football is almost non existent(yes i know we have ISL) and infrastructure to groom young talent is also missing.

You have no idea about the craze for european clubs on metros tier 1 and tier 2 cities.

How many of these crazy PES/EA Sports FIFA games playing fans actually play football in real? 1.5 out of 10 may be that too occasionally. We can't compete with Africans and Europeans when it comes to stamina and athleticism. Before you jump on me and bring Mohan Bagan or other Kolkata clubs into discussion I am talking about entire Indian population here.

Good, ISL has been a major boost ,also it's compulsory for clubs to train kids, hoping they take that seriously,it can do wonders for us,but football culture is diff and it's at max going to be in 4-8 regions, where infra should be updated.

Those wannabe metro(sexual) footy fans, they're even more fake than some the NRI's who change their names just to blend in!

I used to think they are fake too,but they genuinely love those clubs along with ganja and beer.

All they are doing is adding to viewership,it's the teens who matter upon development by clubs.

Tier 1-2 city rich kids are useless anyway,no will to work hard, but he middle and below middle class kids in these cities are worth it.

Yes they are, but I doubt many would take footy as a full time profession or even spend hours in a club vs 10~14 hours of study, you'd probably know as many of us have done this personally.

FIFA are doing this just to grab eyeballs from India, without a Sunny, Kapil, SRT equivalent in football it simply cannot take off in India. That apart from the fact that UEFA & it's members are on a different level altogether. Even getting to Korea or Japan level will be hard for us, it will need literally tonnes of money &/or huge govt support, like in China wrt Olympics.

No one is expecting results immediately, but defn there is a section which is only into football and in 20 years time only it can bring benefits.

Stamina and athleticism are secondary attributes in football and both can be worked on.

I know that wasnt possible , meant it would have been nice to play a team which is at par with us .

Growing up in Mysore/Bangalore I never played any other sport but football untill I was in college . Cricket was not existent in my school , but most of them switched to other sports cos of lack of support back then . These days the most popular sport among kids in Bangalore is probably Basketball and Football . Am pretty sure same is true for most of big Indian cities . Unlike in the past there is more money in the sport and talented kids can think of making a living playing professional football in India .

Anyway we just need a small percentage of population to take interest considering our population .

There are plenty of motivated kids and players in India who care about playing soccer. What's missing is proper facilities, tiered competitive leagues at a domestic level. Just like you can't have a good international cricket team without having good quality domestic cricket. The nascent football league is an extremely promising step in the right direction.

I will go as far as to predict that India will be in the World cup within 25 years or less.

Even an average footballer is fitter than the fittest cricketer. That might be a reason why South Asian countries have not done well in football. Our diet is bad and climate not feasible for running 90+ minutes non-stop.

Canada have the facilities yet our team sucks. You also need talent

70% of Canada is frozen 50% of the year. That's why their #1 sport is ice hockey. There are more fanatic football fans in India, than the entire population of Canada. What a silly comparsion.

Sporting "talent" is not some magical genetic ability. You think that if the freakishly talented athletes in the US and Canada just don't have the "talent" to play cricket? They just choose to play different sports. Or in the case of India, a lot of them never get the chance to even express, harness or even build their talent.

Sporting excellence come when a large number of proficient athletes practice and compete against each other at a high level, incentivized by large financial rewards. This is starting to happen in India, and as a result, will eventually result in the identification and creation of football "talent".

yes these super athletes from US and Aus would succeed in cricket or soccer if they played it seriosuly

but most subcontinental folk wont even if they did play it from young age

this is why desis in soccer mad countries dont make it big. Its a joke that no desi ever has made it big time in soccer whereas disadvantaged Africans have made it big in top european leagues

No, you have an overdeveloped desi inferiority complex. Desis don't make it at the highest level in soccer, because there is not a proper well-funded pathway for players to follow. African players, even those that don't make it to the top European leagues, are likely to make decent wages playing soccer in their own leagues, or at minor leagues elsewhere. Now that franchise football in India has started to provide good compensation for local players, more and more players will come through, eventually leading to a decent team for India, and even a "star" player or 2.

MUMBAI: India has given away 27,000 tickets to the opening games of the FIFA U-17 World Cup to fill empty stands, an official said Friday, in a desperate bid to avoid an embarrassing repeat of the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

The under-17 World Cup, which kicks off on Friday, marks India’s first attempt at hosting a FIFA tournament, but sales for the high-profile event have been poor, despite some seats costing less than a dollar.

Organisers are now scrambling to ensure that the 56,000-capacity Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi appears packed when Prime Minister Narendra Modi attends the opening games which will see India play the United States.

“We have given away 27,000 tickets to schools around the Delhi region and will also provide pick and drop facility. It will be embarrassing for us if the stadium looks empty,” an organising committee member told AFP on condition of anonymity.

The event, which runs until October 28, has been dogged by bad news, with Greenpeace issuing a report Wednesday that said the poor quality of air in India’s pollution-clogged cities poses a “serious health risk” to players and spectators during the tournament.

Twenty-four nations are competing in the event, which is being held in New Delhi, Mumbai, Goa, Kochi, Guwahati and Kolkata.

Greenpeace said all the six cities “share dangerous levels of air pollution” but singled out New Delhi as the venue with the highest risk.

“Air pollution levels during the Indian tournament could be significantly worse than during the 2008 Beijing Olympics,” the report warned.

India’s capital will host its last game of the tournament on October 16, just before pollution levels spike around the Diwali festival, when Hindus celebrate by setting off huge amounts of fireworks.

Media reports said matches were deliberately kept out of Delhi after October 16 because of pollution fears.

India’s Supreme Court has ordered authorities to take precautions ahead of the festival, and measures under consideration include pulling some cars off roads and closing polluting industries.

World Cup organisers did not comment on the Greenpeace report.

The event is among India’s highest-profile global tournaments after the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi in 2010 which were meant to showcase the country’s status as an emerging power but instead left memories of shoddy venues, empty stadiums and massive budget overruns. – AFP

Low attendance and free tickets :))

^ Not many watch football in India even on TV. Not a single person I know watches foot ball on TV. Some youngsters these days watch Euro leagues these days.

Outside of Kerala, Bengal and may be Goa, there is not much love for Football.

FIFA matches should have been held at places where people actually know the sport and care about it.

OK that explains it, Slog the level of Interest in Football in India is far Less compared to the African Nations colonized by France. There is no comparison between the participation level and interest in overall population of India/Pakistan and Ex French Colonies in Africa, can't really pass on a judgement why African Nations can produce Footballers and Desis can't.

The ticket price is a shocking 1 USD and yet they are struggling to fill up the ground.

Because nobody cares about football. Fact remains even if you held yet another ODI vs Lanka this evening and play our C-team, the stands will be bustling.

This no-name tournament? *Crickets* - pun intended.

Tbh, they should have made selected Kolkata, Kochi, Bangalore or Goa for this Opening match.

In other news, all tickets for the 5 matches in Kochi is sold out. Even one quaterfinal match which we don't know who will be playing....

USA 2-0 up.

You just have to laugh...

If we can't compete at this level, what hope remains for the kids when they grow up?

And the US are hardly the strongest team out there either.

Have you watched U17 WC's in the past in Football crazy countries ? The grounds dont fill up there as well

Usually Under 17 is organized in countries that already get to host lot of premier tournaments and even participate in FIFA WC but for a country like India, it's a very special and rare occasion and once in a lifetime tournament so was expecting better attendance.

err its 60 mins up ..any one with little common sense will tell you we have done well up till now .
you where thinking we would win the cup ?

They should actually be thankful for being granted the right to participate as hosts, if India werent an economic giant, FIFA wouldn't bother about it.

Hyedrabad I tend to agree , relatively they lack interest in sports , even cricket I have met very few die hard cricket fans . Then again its relative .

Iam not sure about Delhi , but Mumbai and Bangalore there is definitely a large following for football . I am not talking about Watching premiere league , you should check some youtube videos of a new bangalore club and the kind of support they have had in past few years .

Bangaluru FC is really good tbh. Started noticing them after the AFC Cup last year. Their fan support is fully organised like the european teams.

Once in a lifetime tournament? Lol I wouldn't go that far

Our boys are really playing their heart out.....didn't expect this..:)

its still a u17 WC , unrealistic to expect 60K fans turn up for a Iran vs Guniea match ?

We have been desperate for a club of our own , finally got one and I dont connect with European leagues but have watched few of BFC matches in the stadium and its an awesome atmospehere

I think we have a decent chance against Ghana , Columbia though lost looked a better side .

Looks like Sachin forgot to ask folks to actually attend the games...

0-3 in the end , much better effort than most people expected and could have easily been a different scoreline with a bit of luck . They should play more confidently the next 2 matches

Boys really played well. Score could have been 2-1. But that's absolutely fine. More power to the men in blue.

Pathetic loss to a country ( USA) that itself doesnt take football seriously.

FIFA shouldn't dilute the quality of tournament by hosting tournaments in countries with such low standard of Football.

Lol why are you guys soo jealous of us? You can't stand the fact that India is actually hosting a FIFA U17 WC? :D

Indian goal keeper was one of the best players on the pitch but the team is far from good

Against colombia it will be an even tougher match

It's just an U.17 WC.

Actually Football is going to expand the real Fifa wc from the current 32 teams to 48 teams - Good step.

I'm sure many on this thread are shocked that the stands are empty.

Don't tell me I didn't warn ya'!

Just check out todays match attendence this evening. You will be shocked seeing people really caring about sports other than "cricket".:)

Our main issue is that they allowed only 29 000 viewers for every match instead of 41 000 actual capacity of the stadium citing security reasons. And all the tickets of 8 matches are sold out even before the the tournament started.

This gesture from Brazil U17 coach will definitely earn some more fans for them.:)

Pakistan is the last ranked Football team in the sub continent, 190th ranking the last time i checked.

We only made it to the WC because of the winning bids. We are clearly lucky to escape with a 3-0 loss and we are lucky we aren't in the same group as Brazil. I'm glad we put up a fight today, the US actually played poorly. Our players are way too emotional and reactive.

Poor you.All your hatred for India will mean zilch.

FIFA U-17 World Cup: School kids at JLN stadium 'forced to drink water from toilets'

Lack of proper arrangements at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi during India's opening match against USA at the FIFA Under-17 World Cup meant more than 20,000 school kids, who had come to watch the encounter, had a trying evening on Friday, October 6.

The Indian government made sure the JLN Stadium was packed to the rafters on Friday as they awarded close to 27,000 free tickets to school kids in the National Capital Region. As expected, Amarjit Singh Kiyam's boys, who made history by becoming India's first representatives at the final round of a World Cup, had the backing of a huge home crowd.

However, after shouting their hearts out during India's impressive show in the first half of 3-0 defeat, the schoolchildren had no access to drinking water at the iconic venue in the capital city.

As fans were not allowed to bring water bottles inside the stadium, the food counters at JLN wore the look of a battlefield during the break as the students were reportedly battling to gain access to drinking water.

Some even went to the extent of drinking water from the toilets to quench their thirst, according to a report in "Hindustan Times". A few were forced to drink left-over water in 20-litre water cans, which were lying near trash cans. Food packets for the visitors also arrived late due to delay in security clearance.

Notably, the kids had braved the afternoon heat in New Delhi as they were part of long queues outside the JLN stadium ahead of the opening day fixtures of the high-profile tournament.

He is not wrong saying Nobody cares about football outside few states. In Bombay, nobody would even know that India is hosting WC(tbh i didnt knew until i came across this thread, same goes with most of the NRIs here). Until India achieve significantly in soccer arena, masses will not give a damn about it. FYI, Kerala doesnt represent the Rest of India, just saying.
