As the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 enters its high-stakes Super 8 stage, all eyes turn to the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Kandy for Match 2 as Sri Lanka take on England. This Group 2 heavyweight clash features co-hosts Sri Lanka taking on a revamped England side. Both teams arrived here via contrasting paths. Sri Lanka, buoyed by vocal home support and a clinical group stage (highlighted by a crucial win over Oman and a spirited fight against Australia), are looking to exploit their familiarity with these conditions. England, led by the aggressive Harry Brook, navigated a tricky Group C to prove they remain a powerhouse in the shortest format. Sri Lanka's late wobble - The Lankan Lions have roared loudly in the Group Stage, making light work of Oman and then channeled an epic performance against the Aussies. However, in their final game against Zimbabwe, the co-hosts stuttered and threw away a fine start with the bat. This was followed by an average bowling performance as well and they will need to step up, especially in the pace department, if they are to make a real claim for the semi-finals. They do have Pathum Nissanka, who is in blistering form with the bat but that middle order needs a consistent performer, as we are seeing lots of starts from the Lankan middle-order batters but not an innings of substance.

Spin will be their most lethal weapon as expected but given the Lankans didn't fare all that well against the same opponents in the series leading up to the World Cup, the pressure will be on the home side to step up. England's love affair with spin continues - England, in particular, Harry Brook, have made clear that spin often irritates them but in this T20 World Cup, England seem to have used spin as a weapon and as a shield rather than running away from it. However, their journey so far has been far from perfect. Ordinary performances against the minnows, with both Nepal and Italy running them ragged, and a loss to West Indies means England have a lot of work to do. Looking at England's batting lineup, one would think that there's so much power in it but that power has been inconsistent at best. Will Jacks has actually been their saviour with a couple of blistering innings lower down the order, one of them being a fifty as well and has even bowled brilliantly. Harry Brook and co will look to step things up with the bat and that series just before the World Cup in Sri Lanka will give them confidence to do well in these conditions.

Sri Lanka Squad: Dasun Shanaka (c), Pathum Nissanka, Kamil Mishara, Kusal Mendis, Kamindu Mendis, Kusal Perera, Charith Asalanka, Janith Liyanage, Pavan Rathnayake, Wanindu Hasaranga, Dunith Wellalage, Maheesh Theekshana, Dushmantha Chameera, Matheesha Pathirana, and Eshan Malinga.

England Squad: Harry Brook (c), Rehan Ahmed, Jofra Archer, Tom Banton, Jacob Bethell, Jos Buttler, Sam Curran, Liam Dawson, Ben Duckett, Will Jacks, Jamie Overton, Adil Rashid, Phil Salt, Josh Tongue, and Luke Wood.

The ICC learned nothing from the Women's WC, such a shame to have so much rain affected matches.
Asked trophy Chor Naqvi who wanted Pakistan matches to played in Lanka. Why blamed the ICC now.

Hopefully one more washout or lose for Pakistan and knocked out from the tournament.

This will be beautiful results.

Didn't you predict yesterday that PCT will go through to SF?

There's a difference between my wishes and my predictions. I wish Pakistan never wins a match, but that doesn't mean they won't.

Based on cricket knowledge, I made the prediction because Pakistan has better spinners than England, Sri Lanka and New Zealand, also the conditions in Sri Lanka are favorable for spinners.

Sri Lanka's cricket season is from July to September while it rains from October to February.

Wrong to schedule an ICC tournament in months of rainy season.

Rain also spoiled Women's World Cup matches back in October 2025.

Sri Lanka's best chance is to bat first and score 180+ and then strangle the English batsmen (talented but erratic; not the best players of spin) with their spinners. The absence of Hasaranga has certainly weakened Sri Lanka's spin threat.

Apart from Archer, English bowling is not that special. Adil Rashid is a decent spinner, but any half-decent batsman can also take him apart.

there were also several matches that have been washed out even during july to sep period, including champions trophy final in 2002. SL is a frustrating place to play cricket

Should make this a night match. There is less rain expected 5 pm onwards. ICC needs to be proactive here
can't be done due to multiple reasons including players logistics, fans logistics, matches overlapping each other, technical support staff being shared between matches, so many other stuff.. Cricket matches are too dependent on logistics. Why do you think it takes so much expenses to organize a match, especially longer ones like ODI and Tests..

That's true for a Test match. This is only for a T20. Delaying it by a couple of hours should not be a problem. I've seen it happen even for ODI cricket.

SL haven't beaten England in a T20 since 2014.

Since then, England have won 11 T20s in a row against SL. SL have to play really well to break this streak.
They are in good form. Lost to Zimbabwe, though, but still England was struggling in their victories against Nepal and scotland and italy....

Not convincing

I don't think a single ICC tournament match held in India has ever been rained out without a result, ever.

Unless you count the preliminary round (with AFG , BAN + associates)of the 2016 World T20 when 2 matches were rained out.

I recollect even that was in a summer.it was quite freakish.

India is big and vast country with different climate so that's a big plus for hosting tournaments

The first ball has been bowled.

So it is now official. We will not have a ball-less match as was the case with Pakistan yesterday

It’s great to see the fans being able to enjoy some cricket today unlike yesterday in Pakistan’s washed out match which if was played in India would have been a match to remember.
