England thrash South Africa in the 3rd Test at The Oval and take the series 2-1

England v South Africa: Tributes paid to Queen before Test begins

Tributes were paid to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on day three of the third Test between England and South Africa at The Oval.

A minute's silence was observed before the national anthems, with God Save The King followed by sustained applause from the crowd.

Players from both sides and the match officials are wearing black armbands.

No play was possible on day one because of rain before day two was called off as a mark of respect.

The match has therefore begun on the third morning, with South Africa batting after England won the toss on Thursday.

There were discussions over extending the match into a sixth day on Tuesday but that was ultimately not deemed possible because of the tourists' plans to travel home.

The series is level at 1-1 after an innings victory apiece in the opening two matches.

Spectators attending the Kia Oval were asked to be in their seats 30 minutes before the scheduled start of 11:00 BST in order to observe the tributes to Her Majesty.

The players and umpires entered the field through a military guard of honour before the ground fell silent.

The period of silence was ended by a single chime of a bell from the highest ranking military official in attendance, Senior NCO Robert Brockelsby Miller of the Irish Guards.

Singer Laura Wright performed the anthems, firstly of South Africa before God Save The King, both a cappella. Movingly, the Oval crowd joined in with the new anthem of Britain.

Applause followed, only ended when James Anderson delivered the first ball of the match.

"It's always very special to stand on the ground and sing the national anthem and obviously today will have even more on it," England captain Ben Stokes told the BBC before play.

"The national anthem might be sung a little bit louder than it is normally, and rightly so.

"It's great knowing that we're going to be playing this game, not just for us but in memory of the Queen, so it's a very special occasion for us."

The Oval sits on land owned by the Duchy of Cornwall, responsibility of which is passed on to the new Duke of Cornwall, the Prince of Wales.

Spectators have been prevented from attending in fancy dress for the remainder of the match and sales at bars are restricted to two drinks per person.

5:30pm restart.

In theory, we can now play to 7.30pm.

Rabada is getting smashed.

But Jansen is knocking England back....

Scores level. Every run now has extra value

Stokes gone, another poor shot.

15 wickets in the day.

Oh wow.

When was the last time two teams got bowled out on the same day of a test match? Could very well happen today.

Bizarre day of cricket.

17 wickets gone and at the moment bad light has stopped play.

Close of play:

South Africa 118: Robinson 5-49, Broad 4-41
England 154-7: Pope 67, Jansen 4-34
England lead by 36 runs

England hold a narrow advantage over South Africa in the third and final Test after 17 wickets fell on a day that began with cricket paying tribute to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

A minute's silence was observed at The Oval and was followed by the crowd joining in the singing of God Save The King.

Sustained applause had barely ended when Ollie Robinson bowled Dean Elgar, setting the seamer on the way to 5-49.

With Stuart Broad also claiming 4-41, South Africa were bowled out for 118 in only 36.2 overs, something of a recovery from their earlier 36-6.

At 84-2 and with Ollie Pope en route to 67, England had the opportunity to take a firm grip on the contest, but a number of rash shots caused the hosts to slide to 133-6.

They had reached 154-7, a lead of 36, when bad light stopped play an hour early.

Even though this third day was the first of the match to contain any play, the clatter of wickets has ensured a positive result is likely.

The series is level at 1-1 after an innings victory apiece in the opening two Tests.

Marco Jansen claimed four wickets and top-scored with 30 to keep the Proteas in the hunt on an emotional day three of the decisive third Test against England at the Kia Oval in London on Saturday.

On what was effectively the first day of the match – day one was washed out by the weather and day two suspended following the death of Queen Elizabeth II – the tourists were bowled out for a paltry 118 shortly after lunch.

Thirty of those runs came from the bat of fast bowler Jansen, who then dug deep for figures of four for 34 that helped reduce the hosts to 154 for seven when play ended early due to bad light.

Although England were 36 runs ahead, it was still a good comeback by South Africa and kept their chances of winning the series alive after the first two Tests were won by either team to leave the scoreline at 1-1.

The world has been mourning the passing of Queen Elizabeth II since Thursday afternoon and the two teams together with a capacity crowd at the Kia Oval had their chance to pay their respects through a moment of silence before the start, followed by a powerful rendition of God Save The King.

That seemed to inspire the home side and they had the Proteas in all sorts of trouble from the get go. Captain Dean Elgar (1) and Sarel Erwee (0) fell inside the first 14 balls, before Keegan Petersen (12), Ryan Rickelton (11), Kyle Verreynne (0) and Wiaan Mulder (3) followed within the first hour.

That left the South Africans in deep trouble on 36 for six in the 12th over, before Jansen and Khaya Zondo (23) combined to double the score during a seventh wicket partnership that eventually ended shortly after lunch.

Keshav Maharaj (18) offered some support to Jansen, but a forgettable performance by the visitors ended when Stuart Broad (4/41) got Anrich Nortje for seven – the innings ended in 36.2 overs. Ollie Robinson finished as the pick of the bowlers finishing with five for 49.

Jansen, given a rare opportunity to take the new ball, bowled Alex Lees (13) in the fourth over, before England rallied through Ollie Pope (67) and Joe Root (23) to reach 107 for three.

But South Africa hit back from there by taking four wickets in just over 10 overs, including the key ones of the top-scorer and skipper Ben Stokes (6).

Apart from Jansen’s four-for, there were also two wickets from Kagiso Rabada (2/78) and one for Nortje (1/29) giving the away side hope of bouncing back over the remaining two days of the tour.

Can't see 33 wickets going down in five sessions.

Foakes drops one!

Another 13 wickets if they fell on day 2 and england will either win by an inns or will be chasing runs ;)

Be interesting to see if Foakes and Robbo can push the score up. Robbo is considered an all-rounder at FC level though we haven’t see much batting in tests so far.

i think 75-100 run lead would be huge on this pitch, plus at how poor SA batting is. Foakes and Robbo could easily extend lead to match winning one.

A 100+ runs lead would've been good but they have thrown it away. SA bar jansen bowled rubbish in this innings thus far. Now they should look to get 70 run lead atleast.

So much for the Robbo counterattack.

England have squandered an excellent position at 80-1. SA could still win this.

Tame end to the England innings.

158 all out.

A result still on.

Rubbish from ENG. poor from foakes, hate it when the last recognized batsman won't try to give it whack after 8 down.

Absolutely tossaway from England, completely unnecessary when they were in an immensely comfortable position.

Day 4: 1st Session - South Africa lead by 17 runs

ENG - 158
RSA - 118 & 57/0 (14)

CRR: 4.07

15.3 Stokes to Sarel Erwee, out Caught by Root!! Sarel Erwee c Root b Stokes 26(53)

The captain strikes.

Can England get on a roll?

Looks like wicket has gotten better to bat on. England really should have played just a bit more cautiously yesterday and they would have buried Saffers under scoreboard pressure. Some of the shots they got out on were just pathetic.

Most SA get a start and throw it away so unless that changes they wont get a good team total here in 2nd inns.

SA leading by 55 with 3 down, precarious position.

Effectively 55-3 with the toughest part of the batting done. Advantage England again.

Peterson is just becoming a flashy 20 and out merchant

England turning the screw.

Anderson moving it both ways.

Day 4: 2nd Session - South Africa lead by 57 runs

ENG - 158

Stokes reversing the ball both ways at the Oval and South Africa have barely scored a run for an hour.

South Africa have scored 11 runs in the last 10 overs.

Half the side back in the hut for South Africa. England favourites once again.

94/6 effectively South Africa.

They need something special from their tail enders to get a defendable total.

Stokes into his 11th consecutive over as Tea is called at 106/7.

6 wickets in the session for England.

This series hasn't shone a a positive light on either side. Terrible batting when the weather reverted to type

South Africa all out 169
Lead by 129

England need 130 to win the 3rd Test and the series.

If everyone gets 13 they will do it.

If two batters get to 40 they win.

Alex Lees dropped first ball and gets a 3… lol

They are going at eight an over!

Target into double figures....
