I know the pitch is dead but Clarke's gotta change strategy for Ballance. The guy can't pull for his life. Just bounce him. He's gonna feel comfortable facing full pitched balls.

All his dismissals of late have been on full pitched deliveries :mv

Nice solid pull by Cook, needs to be positive here!

Jhono have his radar right, not a good sign for us. But dig deep cooky and balance.

Ballance looks like a sitting duck against MJ, hes going to get peppered by short stuff followed by a few fuller ones!

Hazlewood has been rather easy to score off this opening spell. He usually keeps it very tight.

wow, MJ getting some deliveries to really hurry through.

But cook looks determined here.

Cook has managed to get to 20* without looking that great so he should be happy..

Johnson's still getting good bounce though. And if a slow and low pitch negates Johnson then it also takes Broad out of the equation.

Whatever type of pitch is produced, England get accused of doctoring. It's the same as it was two years ago, when some supposed that it was doctored for Swann.

The truth is that England have no influence on the wickets. The County groundsmen are told to make something that will hold together for five days, so these pancakes are the result. Headingley is probably the best of a bad bunch as there is a little bit of true bounce in it.

Hasn't it gotten more flatter over the years? I remember Asif/Amir/Anderson getting tremendous amount of swing/seam almost everywhere in England

Completely agree.

The new drainage systems tend to dry the wickets out, but that whole series was under almost unrelenting low cloud cover.

Slow dead grassless track to nullify Johnson - England never doctor their pitches, happens on its own

You're still seeing swing on show from Starc and Johnson. However, there's very low bounce on offer which makes it a lot easier for the batsmen.

Keep in mind, that series (ENGvPAK) was played almost entirely in overcast conditions aiding swing bowling. Additionally, with due respect to Starc/Johnson/2015Anderson, they don't have the sheer swing bowling control that peak Anderson/Amir/Asif had.

The slow pace of the wicket got Lyth out. He was early on the shot and got a leading edge.

Clarke is ringing the changes. England have to get after Lyon to make Clarke overbowl the three quicks.

Lame, Chef. Needed a day of crease occupation from you.

Cook gone. :afaq

Now would be a GREAT time for Bell to realize that he's allowed to score more than 25 runs.

Lyon tying England in knots. They are trying to go after him but he is tying down an end well.

Wonder if Moeen will be able to do the same.

I have intense dislike for Bell for some reason. He is actually a veteran but never has he shown skills befitting a senior statesman. It's not wrong to not be captaincy material but he has never seemed much of a mentor either. A real millstone if ever there was one.

That should be an easy catch for any international keeper except Akmals.

Poor stuff from Haddin, should have taken that! hope its not costly!

43/3 after 15 overs

There's a nice image of Pattinsons expression after Haddin dropped a catch in the 2012 series against India.

Haddin is past it with the bat as well. There was no point playing him in the Ashes or in the WI where a younger keeper bat could've been tried

I agree. Time for Nevill and Mitch Marsh

Roooooooooooooooooooooooooooot to the rescue.

Again.

Drop Ballance and Bell, and get Taylor and Bairstow in.

Haddin isn't there for his keeping. Mainly for his leadership behind the stumps and Clarke's tactical partner.

Clarke needs him on the field and they weren't just gonna throw a new keeper in the Ashes.

Clarke doesn't need Haddin on the field and Nevill is a 29 year old who has Captain New South Wales before.

He doesn't need his hand held

The only reason he is playing is because of Clarke and Boof. It's another matter what you think should've happened.

Ballance? He's been immense for you. Sure a few bad tests recently, but he's done well and deserves to be persisted with.

You've got Lyth now, dunno how good he is, but perhaps give him a chance now. England in general lack opening talent, but have a lot of good middle order prospects. I'd bump Bell up to opening freeing up the middle order and then bring in Taylor. No point Bell hogging the middle order when he's blocking newer talents coming in, he's just not good enough.
