Perhaps The Walking LBW and Haddit will shore the innings up. If AUS can make it to the close, they may escape with a draw.

Ideal situation for your lot would be a few quickfire 50's from haddin and watto, you win and they keep their spots for the rest of the summer.

Time for the selectors to show some guts.

Credit to England. Just smashed us all game

Indeed, root got his chance and took the attack to us and from that moment they have thumped us.

A good as they bowled though our batting approach this whole test has been just shocking, the exact opposite of what you would expect for a team boasting about the importance of it's experienced senior men.

Actually this pitch is pretty flat. Really poor batting by Aus in the first inning. 4 batsman got starts, but playing poorly against spin has cost the match, I think Clarke is not fit enough with his back problem the maximum he can score is 50. But England have actually surpriced me.. Broad bowling well and pitching it up. I thought Broad had lost it.

So haddin in the 18 months since the ashes has apparently scored 259 runs at an average of 15 thats along with multiple missed chances in the uae, at home vs india and the game changing miss here.

Crazy rogers(6 50's in a row) had to prove himself to get a spot in this series but haddin is one of the first picked with his awful returns over a long period.

Selectors didn't have the guts to make a few calls that needed to be made.

Clarke's back means he can no longer cope with test class bowling.
Haddin is a liability with the bat and with the ball.

Watson well he's still in so I wouldn't say anything just yet.

Disappointed with Voges though but I think he'll do better if given another shot. I do expect him to be the kneejerk casualty though with one of the Marsh brothers (probably Mitch because the selectors don't want to admit that Johnsons lost his pace) coming in.

To be fair to Watto we have two reviews left so he has to review that one.

u could see he didn't even want to review, he was shaking his head. Johnson forced him to, poor guy :))

Watson gone. No prizes on guessing how.

I take it that it wasn't a stumping :))

Not sure what Johnson and Starc can do here now. Starc may as well just slog out and avoid aggravating that ankle knock.

Watson's new bat.

But seriously, how is it possible to get out in an identical fashion 29 times in test cricket?

Batting failures aside he gave us an invaluable 13 overs 0/47 this test we barely even missed harris.

Cook.

Why do you have a square leg and a mid on?

All in and finish it off before rain tomorrow

These two guys have a tendency to look a lot more menacing and lift their games whenever Australia show up. That's just a gut feeling of mine. The stats don't back me up, but I'm sure you can sense it in the air, as I do, that they desperately want to perform that little bit better against Australia. Maybe it's the body language or something.

Broad has been very consistent against us (even in the 5-0 he was miles above the rest), jimmy has had some great series against us but some real shockers as well.

Broad generally just seems to bowl the big series turning spells against us.

I am glad Johnson is getting runs so it keeps him in the team to bowl on more slow decks and get 2 for 180.

Pakistan won and England on top, what a day. Only if Moeen would have failed, it would have completed my day.

My prediction was good run rate and all out within 75 overs, 3.4 rr and out in 70 overs so not too bad.

Great win for England; Joe Root will no doubt get the MOM; great A/R performance from Ali to. In Mark Wood England now have the perfect 1st change.

Because it's too good not to bring up again, has anyone seen Man of Steel?

If Pakistan can chase 370+ on day 4/5 pitch on a track having more juice than this road, You can bet your house on Aussies chasing anywhere around 400 easily.

Superman's prediction for this Test Match:

Australia: 99%
England: 1%

Kal-El can point to the 1% chance he gave England and call it a fluke.

Anyway, the hosts totally outplayed the visitors. It was a good toss to win but they bowled better - fuller - and held more catches.

Where to go now for Australia? I would drop Johnson but with Starc looking unlikely for Lord's, they'll need some bowling experience. Siddle will come in - he can operate more effectively on these slow tracks. Watson has to go - bring in Marsh.

So all this talk of England being rubbish and Australia will prove too good for them in any conditions turned out to be nonsense.

There goes the anti-English sentiment on PP, at least for a week.

No way Johnson gets dropped.

Personally I have faith in him. He won't ever be the destroyer from 2013/14 again, that much is certain. But as part of a well rounded attack, he can still be very valuable. I think Starc should be asked to be the main strike bowler, Hazlewood the steady line and length bowler, and Johnson needs to be given a sort of free role where his main goal is keeping it tight. He has a knack for picking up wickets so even in a defensive role I feel he might be able to pull his own weight wicketswise. And if he doesn't it shouldn't matter too much, as long as he keeps it tight. That 0/111 was no good. Australia can absorb Johnson going wicketless occasionally as long as it's 0/50 off 25 overs or something.

His batting is handy as well.

Anderson had requested for slow seamers and not true hard pitches before the series began. Well the groundsman got the 'slow' part right. The Australian attach has looked innocuous and I don't know if that will improve at lords. Maybe Siddle can work something out provided he can keep his pace up.

Australian batting is rather fragile outside home - they are carrying a few passengers at the moment. Australia were marginal favourites due to their bowling. With Harris out now, that advantage is gone. Starc is not yet a top test bowler and Johnson is inconsistent outside home conditions. The English bowling is superior for their home conditions now. I expect Warner and Johnson to step up in one of the games and give them one game. England is going to sweep the rest due to home advantage, based on the first test.

Eng just too good you have to say. Congrats and well played. Aus missing Harris big time as expected. In recent times even tho MJ was the one picking up bagfuls of wickets it was Harris who was holding things together. Having said that Eng batted very well and took the attack to the Aussie bowlers. This newfound positive approach to their game has made all the difference. Bayliss and Farbrace deserve a lot of the credit imo.

With Starc most likely out of the next Test at lords it's only going to make things tougher for Aus. Not looking too good.

I don't see the Aussies winning a single match. With Haris out, Johnson past his best and Starc injured their bowling attacks looks quite weak.

Apart from a wobble on day 1 when england were 3 down they have dominated the match, Australia showed no control and discapline with the ball overall and batting was over aggresive on a wicket where they need to sit in and play according to match situations, Australias ultra aggresive batting and nature will never work on slow low wickets.

A terrific win.

Had to giggle last night when people thought the Aussies might chase the runs. They had absolutely no chance.

Four Tests left so anything can happen, but a very proud day to be an England fan today.

The Australian pace attack is just not good enough or disciplined enough for English conditions. Batsmen have got to learn that they have to play attritional cricket here, they cannot go out all guns blazing in these conditions. English bowlers bowl best in their backyard.

England are playing quite well as a team. I see some similarities b/w this team and the team which won the Ashes in 2010/11 in Aus.

Congratulations to England, outplayed us and deserved the strong win. Cook best captaincy I have seen from him.

For us Siddle will come in for Starc and hopefully Marsh for Watson. That will help but Haddin is still a liability and our batting is too reliant on Smith and the tail. This squad btw is too old.

Agreed. It was refreshing to see Cook being proactive.

Siddle will get thrashed. Pattinson should be brought in, with Starc out and Johnson declining you need a bowler with an X-factor. Along with Mitch, these two could be the difference next game. Hopefully Australia select the right players.

Btw this guy Mark Wood has good pace. I think he touched 93 mph and bowls a heavy ball. He apparently is a reverse swing specialist in County Cricket and Eng are banking on him to play the role Simon Jones played in 2005. Only question marks are over his action.

Pattinson is, as usual, not fit. He would obviously be handy.

Woops mixed up their names, meant Pat Cummins.:asif

The old Siddle would be handy here but his pace has dropped significantly, just doesn't look threatening anymore but pretty sure Australia will end up picking him.

Yep, it's encouraging. We'll have to see how he does if Australia get to 300-3 somewhere though.

the Aussies have always had a running mouth. This is what happens when you don't show enough respect to the opposition.
It's as if they expected England to rollover and play dead. All I could here in the media was how they thrashed England 5-0 and what not neglecting to mention that was on different part of the globe and different conditions not to mention they haven't won a series in England in over 14 years.

True your team always show respect, even to the point of losing those key games you always lose.

oh man don't wanna come across as arrogant or bring SA in unrelated matters but I think they've lost only 2 series in a 10 year span.
You do the math, they don't lose "key" games mate. But good luck in not losing a 3rd series in a matter of a few years never mind 10.
Sorry to burst your bubble

I think they are where England were late in 2013 - lacking certain skills, aging as a unit, key players succumbing to career-ending injuries. There are some quick fixes they could make though - get a keeper who can catch, for starters*, drop LBWatson - and Johnson will like Lord's more than Cardiff I think.

* the England keeper can't catch either, but he's not 37 like Haddit and the expectation is that he will improve.

Match was there for the taking and Johnson proved it later in the day how easy it was batting on this road but unfortunately Aussie top and middle order didn't capitalized on the opportunity losing their wickets regularly to part timers in ugly fashion. I thought if they batted sensibly not being overly aggressive which seemed to be the case, 400 was easily chaseable batting normally for 4 sessions on this super flat phatta road but sadly that didn't seem to be the case. Pretty sure Aussies will bounce back at Lords by crushing Englishmen and show them their true place.
