Steve Finn starts today for England. Let's hope the pitch has a bit more life in it.

Clarkes gotta make runs this match

Cmon Aussies

What a let-down. Everyone out there thought that the troll was gone. :(

since, Australia has won the toss and batted first, is it fair to say - "bye bye England?"

Quite a bit of movement for england bowlers with new ball and the pitch so far.. interesting to see how long this lasts

Aus 18/2

Decision to bat 1st not looking to clever at the moment.

Rogers is still out there. They need to get him out cheaply because if he settles he'll end up scoring big.

Need to get Clarke in the next couple of overs and England would be in control.

Clarke's average is now 50.01. It's probably going to keep sliding down until he retires.

Aussies seem to be a bit over confident. Perhaps wrote off England a little too early

hes been a shadow of the old Clarke for a while

injuries take their toll

Trouble brewing for the Aussies. Still think Rogers is the danger man though.

Just our luck as Steve Finn regains form before the Pakistan series :P

I thought the drainage systems nowadays did not allow for seamer friendly pitches in England anymore? :P . Anderson was seaming it all over the place. So much for England not preparing pitches.

Drainage changes with every match! :P

Different grounds have different wickets and Birmingham has a decent amount of rain over the last week or so relative to the hotter, drier buildup at the start of the summer.

It's not rocket science.

Oh dear Marsh, what the hell was that :))

Seriously, should be dropped for that.

Cunning plan from Australia here, get bowled out quickly so they can have a crack at England while the conditions are great for bowling.

Australia's formula for win on tour: win toss to bat first on true pitch in "Australian" way.
The rest is not in our hands.

We won't know what this wicket is like until England have batted on it.

If Johnno gets runs he usually takes wickets too, but he may not have many to bowl at and Australia will probably have to defend to some extent.

.....oh, he's out for 3 and Jimmy has 5-22.

If there is a team that can turn things around and win the Test from this point, it is Australia.

Australia has the bowling to demolish England. Lets see how they bowl.

There is some movement, but nothing alarming like we saw when India played. Looks pretty good pitch to bat on.

Its just poor cricket from Aussies.

Hardly a green mamba, then.

How is Finn bowling? Is he fast, or doing a sort of McGrath job?

Good movement, hitting the right lengths. Finn's always had pace but for some reason in the last few years he hasn't kicked on plus has had injuries.

Australia haven't done themselves any favours though as Finn's two wickets were pretty much straight balls and their batsmen were playing for swing/seam that wasn't there.

Aaand they're off for rain again.

So much for that dry summer. Shortest heatwave ever.

Yet another promising bowler set back for years by overcoaching.

Finn has the best test match s/r of anyone English who has bowled 2000+ balls since Fred Trueman.

But what pace is he at now? He was around 90 mph when he started five years ago. England really need him to kick on as Jimmy is approaching dotage.

Wow Aussies in a massive hole here, if they get to 150 it would be a miracle, still don`t get why they decide to bat 1st here!

They tend to struggle once the ball starts moving sideways. Be interesting to see how England cope with Starc and Johnson if the conditions stay like this

So you logged in just to troll? Do everyone a favor and hit the log out button.

I'm just discussing the cricket, saw you post and was reminded of what you said in the previous thread. If you're going to make claims about other posters you should have the courtesy to back them up. So yeah, evidence of boot licking please.

Bit rich of you accusing someone else of trolling too.

This pitch and the way Australia have batted reminds me of the 4th and 5th Tests of India Vs Eng series last year.

Rogers is doing a Dhoni here.

England will rack up 400 + and Australia will lose by an innings and 100 runs

They always bat first. They will also have the 2005 Edgbaston test in mind. Ponting won the toss, chose to field and England had 400 runs by stumps on the first day.

No carrying his bat for Captain Australia today.

Well batted, old man.

Hazlewood looks like a young McDermot and also bowls just like him. Its like Craig McDermot reborn again.

Hit 89mph a couple of times but mostly around 85mph mark, lost a little pace but threatening enough.

Not as quick.

Could be very effective on this track - has about the right pace. My tip for the best Aussie bowler in this match.

There is good carry ad bounce in the pitch. So MJ's bouncers will be more lethal this time.

Loving Hazlewood's approach here, just flash at everything as we're buggered anyway !

I did not watch McDermot at his peak, but watched him bowl a few times bakc in early-mid 90's. He was a fast medium bowler just like Hazlewood.

I think Australia will crawl to 130 maybe with a bit of a luck. A coiple of edges have gone flying over the slips for fours so far. Lets see how long luck favours them.
Good disciplined bowling by england but not something which couldnt have been handled.

Is Finn back? I am seeing his average speed as 86.3 and top speed at 93.3 in this innings. That is pretty good. Was barely touching 86-87 in the WC.

A blocked ball is safe but that's not what batsmen are built for

Nine down now. I get the impression that Australia have not applied themselves apart from Cap A. Boof must be fuming.

Clarke is so obviously gone. Can't bend his back and it's effected his batting so much

298 test wickets for Broad. Should become the fifth Englishman in the 300 Club later in this match.

136 all out. Jimmy gets 6-47. England just needed the three bowlers !

As the old saying goes however, judge a pitch when both sides have batted on it. Little margin for error for Aussie bowlers now with such a pitiful score.

Anderson has 6-47 and Australia are all out for 136, having batted nearly 37 overs after choosing to bat first.

Now for Chef and Lyth to face The Mitchell Brothers :42:

Stuff the average and reputation. He should retire because he's not best XI

Big name players rarely retire by themselves. They always believe that its only a matter of time before they find form. They need to be shown the door. In the process what they do is damage their average and reputation. Happened to Sehwag. His average fell below 50 because he had an appalling 10 test match period before he was forcibly booted out.

Or is it that Clarke is holding back his retirement until he plays India again :nehra
