Interesting, as he is no quicker than Finn. What is the difference - the lower action resulting in throat balls, instead of head-high bouncers that can be ducked?

Yes, I would think so. Has to be the slingy action and the awkward angle and trajectory he creates. Makes the ball harder to pick up.

Edit: He's also smarter than people give him credit for. Mixes up the short balls with the one that angles across right handers very very well. Just short balls all day haven't got him all these wickets.

Those were two vicious bouncers from Johnson. Brilliant over has dragged Australia back into this test.

The slingy action does help generate quite steep bounce which can be surprising! England need to batten down the hatches. Finn is more like a harmison/morkel type bowler who gets natural bounce through his action and height.

I can't believe people are still crying about pitch doctoring btw. Cardiff always plays like that, the dry pitch at Lords was preceded by hot and dry weather and it's been pouring with rain in Birmingham over the last week or so and the wicket here subsequently has some juice in it.

Now Mitchell One is pitching it up to out-of-form Buttler instead of sticking it up his nose.

I'd say another sixty runs and Poms are in the box seat.

You also forget Johnson left arm angle

No idea why Johnson isn't bowling. Moeen is dead meat against his short ball.

And no Lyon as well. Anyone but Starc would be a good choice.

Buttler gone. Should have reviewed it.

Lyon has dragged Australia right back into it. Expect Australia to win this if they can keep the lead to under 100.

Buttler needs to play his natural game, he is a walking wicket otherwise.

Edgbaston has to be the best ground in England in terms of pitch. Weather is always poor here, but always produces a fantastic test and wicket.

Moeen being wasted by England. Down at 8 is an absolute joke. He can't' bat freely here. V tough situation. Even Pakistan would not put a specialist bat at 8.

Buttler gone. Should have reviewed it.

England have two reviews left too. Poor tactical thinking from Buttler. 19 of 20 DRS decision have not overturned the ump in this series so maybe he thought he was unlikely to get the decision changed.

England just need to slog and get a 100 lead as that will be a match winning one!

Doesn't bode well for England in the UAE.

If the batsmen are losing their heads against Nathan Lyon then lord knows what'll happen against Yasir Shah.

England and their problems against spin continues.. It would be exciting to see them against yasir in uae later.

Tests where the ball is doing something are the best. Every ball you wanna watch because you think a wicket can fall. Runs are more valuable too.

Oh I cannot wait till the UAE series. I hope it is a 3 match series?

If we win that series 3-0.

And English win this series 2-1. Then Pakistan will be number 2 test team

I think they have a series plan to hit him out of the attack to make the Mitchell Brothers bowl more, but it's not working. He's got more than people think.

Cane the Beard-Broad alliance carry England to a hundred lead?

Does Nasser Hussain not know anything about PAK cricket? Rehman is finished. As is Ajmal.

They will .

Lead is 73... can england squeeze out another 27 runs...

I don't know why English and Australian batsmen have got in their heads that they can hit any decent spinner out of the attack. If it hasn't worked a hundred times before it won't work now.

Sure if the spinner is a total pie merchant then go after them. But if they're good, give them the same respect as a quality pacer. This is where the Aussies fell down in Cardiff against Moeen Ali.

Concur 100%.

It's turning on day two! Beard-Broad has put on 25 and inched the lead up to 86. What will be enough to offset having to bat last?

England lead by 85 runs, they should be happy with that after damage that was done by Aussie bowlers this morning.

Good test match until now, Just don't want to see Aussies putting up massive total & bundling out England for 100 odd runs.

How many runs England can chase here? 150?

Last little bit before lunch will cost us dearly, for such an apparently dangerous and rapid bowler starc sure does serve up some floaty garbage.

It's one of those enthralling matches where every run counts.

Australia could have the best of the batting conditions in their second dig.

Pitch looks like eased a bit in second session.England really missed chance of taking good first inning lead here.

Still they have chance of taking lead of 150 though.

LOL at the crowd. Wish I was there. Nice to see them having fun with Johnson.

Moeen at 8 is just brilliant, tbh

He's easily good enough as a spinner for England (Considering their stock) and a more than handy batsman

Buttler and Ali should change batting spots for the next test. The keeper hasn't been scoring any runs.

Moeen have done well, but lucky.. But the ball have gone soft so he should try to make a big one here

Moeen is ideal for 8th, that position offers him freedom to play freely. Looking good after suspect start. Need to convert this inning into 100 though.

The only bad thing Moeen has done so far is be a Liverpool fan, should probably be dropped for that alone

Standing ovation for Ali. Important contribution here but he'll have a bigger job to do with the ball, seeing how well Lyon has done.

Oh, well done BeardBroad! 83 runs added!

Finn has scored a test fifty......

140 lead on this deck is more like 250-300 lead at lords, that ali/broad partnership killed our chances.

That's that. 145 lead. Come on Jimmy, Draco, Finny, Hobbit, Beard!

This seems to be a winning lead. Australia failed to finish it off at 7/190. Test cricket has seen very big surprises, but the Aussies have to get 350 now to put pressure on the Poms.

Broady your beauty!

Come on lads, once more unto the breach!

If Australia are 3 down before 50, then this should be over by Lunch tommorrow.
Dismiss 2 out of Warner, Rogers, Smith and they are pretty much done.

Such a weak middle order with Clarke, Voges, Marsh and Neville.Watson atleast guarentees 30 every innings.Problem is they can't drop Clarke and Marsh.Voges deserves few more chances and Neville is Neville.

You would think our lot would be better at 20/20 considering we seem to want to play tests the same way.

Australia is trend setter in scoring 4 rpo in test cricket when they had one of the all time great test team.

No need to change that necessarily but maybe curbing is needed depending on situation & current talent level.

I think Warner just missed chance of scoring fastest Ashes 50 by an Australian.

Why do we need to score at 4 an over?

It's only day 2 we are well behind facing a new swinging duke ball, surely not gifting them wickets is vastly more important than our run rate?

I think Warner is right to play this way - if he prods around he'll likely get out.

Clarke looks horrendously out of nick. It's been this way for a long time actually. He was shocking in UAE too.

Because his back is gone.

He can't bend it which means his footwork is non-existent and he can't go forward
