England v Sri Lanka | 1st Test | Galle | Mar 26-30, 2012

closing in on 200, benefit of a good tail. You need to bat like Pakistan on these pitches , 300 in 130 overs :))

This is where you stick two fingers up at the balcony Anderson. Outscored 5 English bats, and bowled 5 wickets.

what a game!!!

panesar > patel in batting

patel > panesar in bowling.

no kidding people. its test cricket.

This is also why I don't value spinners as highly unless they are really good. People get out to them because it's a mindgame where they psych themselves out and think too hard about a guy slowly flicking his fingers over a ball. Spinners like Herath get wickets because the batsmen are scared, seamers actually have to bowl well.

And ffs Jimmy.

And bowlers like Philander?

Anderson > all but Bell in batting, and almost matched Strauss, Broad and Swann before running out of partners

Anderson >>> All England bowlers in bowling.

This is sad.

Philander to me does well due to the fact that all batsman crap themselves about Steyn and Morkel, underestimate Philander and he cashes in.

Kudos to England. They scored 13 more than Mahela's individual score!

Good bowling display from Sri Lankans. England blown away with in 47 overs. Lols that's not even two full sessions.

Lanka need to bat well and try to get a 400+ run lead and shut out England completely in this Test.

Need to skittle them to even have a chance of avoiding defeat.

But even a hypothetical chase of 280 would probably still be too much.

I am waiting for June to see that, will be interesting
(because Mahela is very shrewd, haven't seen a better captain in Asia in tests)

You have to feel for the England fast bowlers. It's boiling. I think Swann has to do something here, the conditions just won't allow quicks to do any substantial damage in a situation like this.

You were expecting miracles from him after just 7 tests
(many of them In Aus), It took Kumble and Harbie 2-3 years to cement their place in the team.
kumble and harbie provided us crucial breakthroughs right from the start of their carrear.

As I have keps saying all winter. This England side depend to much on the batting of their tailenders.

The last 4 tailenders made 88 runs out of Englands 193.

What will happen if Broad or Swann don't play, who will make the runs then?

Wow, so much for after training in SL for a long period, making 193, after batsmen failed and tailenders making ;) England's struggle continues

Whippy, for all the moaning and pessimism I generally exhibit... Have I not been fairly on the money with my assessments?

You're usually on the money with retrospective assessments but your posting style and predictive hypotheses can be a bit saddening.

I too like to be realistic and self-deprecating but we have to remember we are supporters.

Yup he is good , but I guess in the end it all comes up to how good your bowlers are. Our test team is full of grinders and I can see see them score a reasonable score at unreasonable rate (2.45).

No 100s yet from English batsmen on these flat Asian tracks. 5 out of last 7 innings, they have failed to cross 200. Yet to bat convincingly since throwing us out of the no 1 position.

Thankfully for them SA failed to close out the Kiwi series 2-0 which means England could hang onto the number 1 rank a little longer.

Mahela once again showing what a superb skipper he is.

I meant it would be tougher than UAE for Pakistan, simply because of Mahela, without him as captain Pak will be outright favourites. I remember the series in 2006 but Pak attack is not centered on pace bowling now. and yes Samaraweera:

Once again, our bowlers are quite willing to do more than their share.

Srilanka were not that easy in UAE either , we only won 1-0. Could have have better if not for some silly batting. Sri Lanka are always a tough opponent at home. But i expect great things from our test team, the batters are determined and the spin department is immaculate.

32 overs remaining, need many many more wickets today

Two left-handers at the crease for Anderson.

That's nice, let's do this.

Broad and Anderson need to do what Asif did to Srilankans ! I hope they knock SL cheap, lets say 120 130 and then it be an exciting finish.

Nearly following the script of the 1st innings with these early wickets. 300+ on the cards for SL here.

Who said this pitch was flat? The ball is spitting and turning like hell

SL basically 138-2 so still ahead in this game. One more wicket will balance it out.

Still a bit too far behind, 230 be a very good score on this pitch. English bowlers need a spell like Shoaib's(nz) or Asif(sL)

This is Galle, batting fourth is tougher than any Indian turner as far as I know. good start for England though.

england could maybe scrape to 200 in their 2nd innings, maybe. unlikely.

60 more runs and it's game over.

Haven't seen these wickets live, catching the replays. Oddly seem to be tabbing back in to see the celebration while doing my work.

I think they should let Monty bowl with Swann, pitch is definitely responding to spin.
