Why is the lords crowd usually this much bland despite being present in good numbers

London crowds are restrained. They won't say much until the beer starts to kick in during the afternoon session. Then there will be more banter.

Boycott said on TMS that Sri Lanka's bowlers are barely county cricket quality so England should score 500.

Just look at the quality of my English side and compare it to NZ. I mean England scored 344 in just 1 day whereas a weak team like NZ scored 240. And young talent like Joe Root playing a proper composed test innings simply brilliant. Its a shame what's going to happen to Sri Lanka when they don't have their old guns anymore - Sanga, Mahela, Herath etc
your patriotism is admirable :shakib

500 is possible. I reckon our bowlers can put on 100 against this crew. SL really should have batted. Once the juice went out of the wicket there was nothing in it for their bowlers, and our top three batters got themselves out.

Its kind of true though that scoring big against teams like Sri Lanka, New Zealand and India is not really an achievement due to fragile bowling attack. If England get a good start in tomorrows first session then they are in control of the game. But lets be honest though, Lords ground is generally a flat surface despite the green tinge you may see here and there.

England v Sri Lanka | 1st Test | June 12-16, 2014 | Lord's | Day 2

The second day of the first Test between England and Sri Lanka to be played today at Lord's, London

Beautiful weather over London today. This is the best day to bat!

If Root and Prior get back in, SL will be chasing the leather. A big chance for Broad to show what he can do with the bat too.

If SL can take quick wickets with the new ball, Sanga and Jaya could rule.

SL must take wickets early or they'll pretty much slip. The tenacity and thrill they show in ODI and T20 where they come back from tough situations to dominate must be shown today. A lot now depends on Sri Lanka's batting. They must show the gall and bat long. One of those men needs to go out there and stay at the crease so the team can bat around them.

It all depends on how quick SL can take those last 5 wickets. They will feel hard done by the umpire after the close call on the LBW for impact which was just a whisker outside off. If I were Mathews, I'd open with Pradeep and Eranga. They are the fastest bowlers so use them now when they're fresh and rearing to go. The ball is still newish so try and pitch it on a full length like they did in the morning yesterday.

SL need to survive Andersons early spell, if they can do that, I think they can fight back and salvage a draw. Problem with SL is their pacers have shown they're probably not good enough to take 20 English wickets to win.

Odd that you're already ruling out a SL win. They could bowl out England for 400, get 600 and put them under pressure on the last day. Herath with men round the bat, wicket breaking up, game on!

That's provided the wicket breaks up.

Prior looking good for a hundred here. He has played really well , poms would be delighted to see his form back

England 7 down, Good chance for SL to wrap up the remianing innings as quickly as possible.

They bowled very well this morning, but they have basically gifted Broad a 50 here with terrible bowling, short and spraying it everywhere.

Plunkett can bat, too - long tail from this England side, up to the top order to get going next time.

This over rate is atrocious. How can a team of entirely slow bowlers have such a poor over rate?

Good ballsy performance by us. Should be a win unless the bowlers have left their form at home.

150 up for Rooty, well played lad!

SL are looking silly for putting ENG in on this, and suddenly the air is getting humid for Jimmy.....

Boycott on TMS:

"Keep going England- keep em in the field! Remember that runout"

Punish em for the vile mankading!

If you are in the UK, it's available on the BBC site

If you are not in the UK, not sure but there must be ways as people listen all around the world.

Powering along now. 50 partnership for the ninth wicket. So great to have a #10 with some FC fifties. I remember Botham at #6, then Taylor the wickie who averaged about 20 in tests, then four number elevens.....

Eranga has gone at nearly five and a half an over. England need to declare and let SL bat. I want to see Plunkett bowl. This is becoming a bit boring.

SL got destroyed but....Joe Root! :))) :))) :))) :))) :)))
In seriousness, Root is pretty impressive imo and should bat @5

Well played Root. Hopefully this can be the catalyst for him to come out of the troubles of last winter and become the next great England batsman.

In theory he has it all - plays seam well, plays spin well, plays the ball late and should be able to play an all kinds of wickets. Which can't be said for the rest of the English order at the moment.

Lower order is where Root belongs at this point.

Keep him there England

Special player Root! his double 100 is simply outstanding. Sri Lanka are going to work extremely hard to not lose this.

yayyyy clouderson given :D :D
NOOOOO EDITED. How lucky wooow

Curiously there is now about 50% cloud cover.

Of course even under 100% cloud cover, the ball may not swing. As great an orthodox swing bowler as Sir Ian Botham said he could never predict when it would swing or not.

The pitch is so dry that ENG might start reversing it in the last hour.

You know, SL deserved that review going their way after the appalling umpiring shown this series. First Bopara, then Broad in this test and Prior's LBW yesterday.

For anyone that missed the Russell Arnold's story, Sangakkara, Prasanna Jayawardene and Kaushal Silva were all part of one team(NCC) in First Class in early 2000 before anyone of these made debuts for SL. Prasanna Jayawardene was considered one of the upcoming WK for SL who was 2 years younger than Sanga and 15 year old Kaushal Silva was considered the back up. The coach of NCC told Sangakkara to leave the team because he'd never get a chance to keep. Sanga stuck around, worked hard and got where he is. Moral of the story, never give up.

Truly inspiring story. Thanks for sharing brotha!

I think this track is too good for batting for there to be a result.

Has anyone seen Toby Roland-Jones bowl? Why ECB doesnt consider him for ODIs or Tests? His stats r fantastic Or may be the best among English players in domestic.

If SL bat for all of tomorrow, we have a game on our hands.

This looks like a draw unless one of the teams collapses to 130-150 all out in one of their innings.

Batting seems to be easy now. Clouderson needs some real clouds for England to have any chance. Bowling on a Sunny day is not his forte.

Wonderful innings by Joe Root. Yes, the pitch is flat & the bowling was not all too threatening, but Root calmly & assuredly negotiated challenges that others failed. Bell looked in fair touch, and Prior came back brimming with his trademark belligerence & confidence. All in all a hopeful sign for Eng's beleaguered batting.
The improved atmosphere in the dressing room has obviously done wonders for the Eng batsmen … except for the opening pair of course. Can't but help thinking that Compton would have made much more of a fist of it. Pretty embarrassing for Cook to be outscored by everyone except his failed debutant opening partner, and the number 11 who was declared on before he could pass Cook. Questions about his form will continue, & his leadership will be under close scrutiny over the next 3 days.
Sri Lanka came back with a strong reply, and unless Eng's bowling shows some fire, the stage is set for Mahela & Kumar to cash in on conditions well suited to 2 very dangerous batsmen!

Well looks like nothing in the pitch here so expect SL to come pretty close to the 1st innings total

Things will go differently today IMHO.

England will have had a chat about yesterday and come out today with a different mindset.

England should look to win this Test or else it's an opportunity missed.

28 -13.

Favorites right?

Eng bowlers need to attack the stumps.
as said many times they lack the zip to force things on dead wickets.

any decent bowler will get wickets when its swinging.

why is slip so deep ? I have never understood this... Can anyone explain it to me please? When the bowl is not carrying slip has to come alot alot forward for my knowledge?????

A typical Lords batting paradise unless there is some Heavy cloud cover or humidity this Test will be a high scoring draw.

Because Cook has to actually see a catch be missed, preferably two, before he can understand his slip is too deep. So he will then move the slip to deep point to save runs, as they would only have 420 of them by that stage.

If we are still batting by the end of the day, we will be 403 going by the run rate

Sky Sports will be showing a programme on 1992 WC in the lunch break
