Players are written off or hyped up very quickly by Pak fans. Fawad and Shadab both deserve lots of opportunities .

Top 6 are unlikely to be changed by management. So focusing on bowling where changes are likely to be made.I would rest the two kids Naseem and shaheen and replace shadab (although he batted really well and has a good batting record in England). So I would go with the foloowing to try to cover all basses:

Faheem batting more suited for tests rather then one days and a very good seam bowler in English conditions.
Wahab Only bowler who can make something happen has aggression ability to reverse it,plus can hold a bat
Yasser
Sohail bowling well, has ability to take a few wickets with a new ball. Plus can hold a bat
Abbas

Weather predictions are not great throughout the test unfortunately but, weather can change quickly and predictions arent always 100%. So lets see how it goes.

Should just go with 4 bowlers and a part timer. Rather strengthen the batting. You need to counter the opponents strengths and for England its their bowlers. Pakistan with 4 bowlers should have enough firepower against their batting.

3 changes should be made

Abid out... Imam in
Rizwan out... Sarfaraz in
Shadab out.... Fawad in...

England fast bowler Stuart Broad has been fined 15 per cent of his match fee for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the first Test against Pakistan in Manchester.

Broad was found to have breached Article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to
“using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon his/her dismissal during an International Match.”

In addition to this, one demerit point has been added to the disciplinary record of Broad, for whom it was the third offence in a 24-month period, taking his cumulative demerit points to three.

Broad’s previous breaches were on 27 January this year during the fourth Test against South Africa at the Wanderers, and on 19 August 2018 in the third Test against India at Trent Bridge.

The incident occurred in the 46th over of Pakistan’s second innings on Saturday, when Broad used inappropriate language after dismissing Yasir Shah.

Broad admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by Chris Broad of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees and ratified by the ICC Cricket Operations department as per the COVID-19 interim playing regulations. There was no need for a formal hearing.

On-field umpires Richard Kettleborough and Richard Illingworth, third umpire Michael Gough and fourth official Steve O’Shaughnessy levelled the charge.

Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50 per cent of a player’s match fee, and one or two demerit points.

Must feel so weird when your Dad fines you. Stuart might as well feel like his being asked to wash the dishes at home for not doing his homework.

England opening batsman Dom Sibley is still wary of Pakistan's bowlers heading into the second Test at Southampton on Thursday. The hosts lead the three-match series 1-0 after a three-wicket victory in the first Test at Old Trafford last week. It was a tough match for Sibley, however, with the Warwickshire right-hander lbw to accurate seamer Mohammad Abbas for eight in the first innings and caught at slip for 36 off leg-spinner Yasir Shah in the second as England eventually chased down a stiff target of 277.

With Pakistan's line-up again set to feature left-arm quick Shaheen Afridi and teenage fast bowler Naseem Shah, Sibley expects to have his work cut out again in the second Test.

"They are a very good attack -- they have got a bit of everything," Sibley told reporters on Tuesday.

"Abbas is very accurate, they have left-arm angle (Afridi) and the youngster (Naseem) who has some pace and bowled really well last week and a world-class spinner (Yasir)."

"It is a very good attack but we have had a look and now we need to adapt and prepare for Thursday."

"More to give"

Nevertheless, the 24-year-old Sibley said he remained "greedy" for "more big runs" having made two hundreds in his first 10 Tests.

"If you said to me after 10 Test matches you'd be averaging 40 and have two hundreds I'd have been pleased.

"But at the same do I do feel I have got a lot more to give. I do feel like I have let opportunities slip to score maybe four or five hundreds.

"I know that might sound greedy, and unrealistic, but that is the way I am thinking."

Sibley added: "There are periods where bowlers bowl at you and think, 'I'm not sure how I am going to score big runs against this guy', but it's just a case of getting through that and people always say batting does get easier.

"I am starting to feel more comfortable when I go out to bat, there are some amazing bowlers but I always go out to back myself."

England will be without Ben Stokes for the remainder of the series after the star all-rounder left the camp for personal reasons to head to New Zealand, where his father is recovering from a serious illness.

"He is a massive part of our team and he is one of the best players in the world, but obviously family comes first and we will be supporting him with everything that is going on," Sibley said.

"We will have to make do in his absence, people will have to step up."

Sibley had previously said it was the example of Stokes and Jos Buttler that had encouraged him to lose some 12 kilogrammes during lockdown.

Although he ran out Asad Shafiq with a direct hit during Pakistan's second innings, Sibley refused to attribute the dismissal to his new slimline build -- which he said he was still working on.

Promoted

"I've got to watch what I eat and make sure I get in the gym a little bit," Sibley explained.

"For example if I hit a low score, I'll try and get something done so that I don't sit around and have tea and biscuits all day watching the other boys get runs," he added.

If Faheem plays...I better not say the rest.

This pitch is going to help fast bowlers. Forget about playing 2 spinners, I wouldn't even include Yasir Shah in the playing 11. He is going to get hammered in this game if he plays.

Have a feeling Faheem will be played

Yep. They seem quite intent on having an allrounder in the team, and a fast bowling one will fare far better than a spinner. Faheem in for Shadab with the rest unchanged is my prediction.

Would personally have Fawad in for Shadab, and drop Yasir for a fast bowler. If the conditions aren't favourable for Yasir, he will be a massive liability. He cannot play a holding role, if the conditions won't let him take wickets then he will leak runs spectacularly. Should be dropped this match.

Serves Broad right...i genuinely felt for him when Yuvi monstered those 6 maximums in SAF 20-20 wc, but some of his petulant prat like behaviours have let me feel he deserves this tap on his shoulder. Jim-grumpy needs a rocket too...has got scot free too many times like mcgrath....That said nothing against them as bowlers - absolute ATG's-no doubting their cricketing ability-huge respect....wish they'd behave better on the field...

Reports indicating that Fawad Alam will replace Shadab Khan for 2nd Test - wise move?

Nope.....we need 5 bowlers......especially if lose the toss.

Yes, the forecast doesn't look great for this test. May as well scrap it now and concentrate on winning the final one to draw the series.

Matches tend to last 4 days anyway. The weather likely to play a part but seems we should get a lot of play in.

Bad move if they drop Shadab for Fawad.

Spin should play a role again in Southampton. If I’m not wrong Moeen Ali ripped Indian batting lineup when they played here.

Pakistan hope for fewer bad days as second Test looms

It wouldn’t be unfair to say that Pakistan were the better team for the majority of the first Test match in Manchester. Well behind the eight ball heading into day five, England made a dramatic turnaround to maintain the recently developed habit of chasing down daunting targets in final innings.

One bad day cost Pakistan the Test and they will be wary of the errors they made at Old Trafford as the second Test beckons in Southampton.

England will be without Ben Stokes, who will miss the series owing to family reasons, and will have to rejig their line-up accordingly. Zak Crawley, who was impressive against the West Indies, could come back into the starting line-up.

England will also be looking to rotate their seam bowlers like they did in the West Indies series. This could see James Anderson, who dismissed retirement rumours earlier this week, sitting out and Ollie Robinson, who was called up into the bubble, get a debut. Jofra Archer could also be in for a break. Sam Curran is capable of covering up for Ben Stokes and might figure in England’s plans if that is the case.

Pakistan, on the other hand, had success on the batting front with Shadab Khan at No.7, but on a day four pitch, the leg-spinner couldn’t quite get the breakthroughs. They are, however, likely to persist with him although there is the option of handing a debut to veteran domestic all-rounder Kashif Bhatti.

The visitors are likely to remain unchanged otherwise, unless they want to rotate one of their seamers. Wahab Riaz and Sohail Khan are available as back-up pacers in the squad.

Remember the last time

The win at Old Trafford in Manchester was just the third time England had averted a loss in the first match of a Test series in the last 11 attempts. They clearly get stronger as a series progresses. In 2016 and 2018, England lost the first Test to Pakistan but went on to win the second Test emphatically – by 330 runs (2016) and by an innings and 55 runs (2018) – both times.

This will be the first time England and Pakistan will be facing each other in Southampton. England have a mixed record at the venue with two wins, one draw and one loss. They lost their last match, the first one of the West Indies series, at the venue.

What they said

James Anderson, England all-rounder: “For the first time in probably 10 years I got a little bit emotional on the field. I got a bit frustrated and let it get to me a little bit. It reminded me of when I first started playing, when you get frustrated and a little bit angry, you try and bowl quicker and quicker and it doesn’t help.”

Misbah ul Haq, Pakistan head coach: “We should remember that we were right on top until pretty much the last session of the game and we played very good cricket. Sure, we need to improve 10 to 15 per cent and deal with pressure situations a little better but we shouldn’t be mentally down.”

Given that Azhar and Asad are "undroppable" our best bet is Imam at 3 and Azhar at 5. 4 bowlers plus shan/azhar/shafiq to provide partime duty. Given the amount of rain forecast the only way we get a result is if one side side has a poor innings, which means not a lot of overs to bowl in the match so I dont think we need 5 frontline bowlers. Azhar doesnt consider Shadab a front line bowler anyway. Imam has better technique against the moving ball than most other Pak batsmen better him at 3 than Azhar thats for sure.

SOUTHAMPTON, England, Aug 12 (Reuters) - Former England captain Michael Vaughan predicted the hosts will sweep the three-test series against Pakistan despite the absence of talismanic all-rounder Ben Stokes for the last two matches.

Stokes was part of the England team which pulled off a thrilling three-wicket victory in the series opener at Old Trafford but is now missing for family reasons.

“He plays a big, big role in that dressing room,” Vaughan wrote in a blog, although he had no doubts about the depth in the England squad.

“Even though Ben Stokes is out I think England will be too strong. England will win the series 3-0, that’s my prediction.”

The Pakistan team led by Azhar Ali dominated much of the opening test in Manchester but Chris Woakes and Jos Buttler launched a superb counter-attack to power the hosts to an unlikely victory.

“Azhar Ali (is) a young captain in terms of test matches but an experienced player in terms of test matches that he’s played. I think that was his chance to win a game overseas for the first time,” Vaughan said of the 35-year-old.

He also felt England might rest veteran quick James Anderson in the second test beginning on Thursday.

“I’d be surprised if he plays back-to-back games, so I think he will be rested. Maybe Sam Curran will come in for him or Mark Wood,” he added. “Zak Crawley will probably come in for Ben Stokes.” (Reporting by Amlan Chakraborty in New Delhi; Editing by Ken Ferris)

Imam at 3 will end Azhar’s test career why because Imam is still not a newbie and one who has seen a lot intl already even in tests. Any chance to him will try to capitalise on it and cement his place in the side. He might score runs and Misbah will be forced to give up the position for him than his friend. In Misbah/Azhar foresight this will not happen.

Rain is forecasted for all days in the test. Day 2 can be a total washout whereas other days might have some rain delays. The forecast for Day 1 is also not that great. Let's see.

My XI of Pak:

1. Shan Masood

8. Yasir Shah
9. Shaheen Afridi
10. Naseem Shah
11. Mohammad Abbas

My XI of Eng:

1. Rory Burns

5. Ollie Pope
6. Jos Buttler (WK)
7. Chris Woakes
8. Jofra Archer
9. Stuart Broad

Pakistan Test squad practice session at the Ageas Bowl, Southampton

Have PAK announced the 14-man squad already? Really interesting times with the rain forecast at Ageas. Most parts in the south west (Somerset, Gloucestershire etc) are seeing solid heatwaves. Not sure what it is going to turn out to be.

My 11 will be:

1. Abid

2. Shan

3. Azhar

4. Babar

5. Fawad

6. Asad Shafiq

7. Rizwan

8. Sohail Khan

9. Yasir

10. Shaheen

11. Abbas

16-man squad for 2nd Test:

Azhar Ali (c)
Babar Azam (vc)
Abid Ali
Asad Shafiq
Fawad Alam
Imam-ul-Haq
Kashif Bhatti
Mohammad Abbas
Mohammad Rizwan
Naseem Shah
Sarfaraz Ahmed
Shadab Khan
Shaheen Shah Afridi
Shan Masood
Sohail Khan
Yasir Shah

4. Babar

5. Fawad

6. Asad Shafiq

7. Rizwan

8. Sohail Khan

9. Yasir

10. Shaheen

11. Abbas

Good team if Shadab has to miss out,but can Sohail be effective and fit in second inning. I guess partrimebowlersshould be utilised more to restpacers.

Since this match probably won’t see a result I would give Faheem Ashraf and Haider Ali a go just to see how they fare.

Heavy rain forecasted. Won't get a result

There goes pak chance of winning a test series in England since 1996. Don't think we will ever beat England in England again in my lifetime

16-man squad for 2nd Test:

Azhar Ali (c)
Babar Azam (vc)
Abid Ali
Asad Shafiq
Fawad Alam
Imam-ul-Haq
Kashif Bhatti
Mohammad Abbas
Mohammad Rizwan
Naseem Shah
Sarfaraz Ahmed
Shadab Khan
Shaheen Shah Afridi
Shan Masood
Sohail Khan
Yasir Shah

Haider Ali could easily have been slotted in instead of Asad Shafiq. Time to blood new batsmen for the middle order and find replacements for Asad and Azhar.

My XI for Southampton test would be:

Shan
Abid
Azhar
Babar
Asad
Fawad
Rizwan
Yasir
Naseem/Sohail(if Naseem needs a rest)
Shaheen
Abbas

No. Haider Ali needs to play 2-3 years of first class cricket before we can consider him for tests.

Waqar: we need to cash in the opportunity of Stokes not in team..” loser mentality, instead he could have said. Stokes or no Stokes doesn’t matter we have plan for ever eng player... but who am I kidding...

3 changes should be made

Abid out... Imam in
Rizwan out... Sarfaraz in
Shadab out.... Fawad in...

Are you kidding, did you even watched the 1st game? Rizwan keeping was probably best keeping in England for quite some time & Sarfraz is on par with Rizwan as far as batting is concerned & miles behind Rizwan as far as keeping is concerned.

If it’s going to rain a lot, I would drop Naseem as he isn’t ideal for these conditions for Sohail who picked up two 5-fers last time.

Even though Yasir picked up 8 wickets last match, I would try a SLO who can genuinely bat and bowl.

Abid would be a walking wicket so replace him with Imam, who knows these conditions well. Get Azhar to open with him as he’s useless at 3.

Faheem not included in the 16 man squad. Seems as if what I want to happen is going to be very close to what will happen...

The current team management isn't that intelligent and will probably opt for their key players instead of thinking tactically.

It's going to rain a lot so playing Yasir will be a waste of a spot. Same could be said for Naseem who could really use some rest before going 100% again in the third and key test match.

Considering there won't be many full days of play in this test match I would have at the least dropped Yasir for Sohail as four pacers will be usefull here.

Not a bad side. I like what you have done with it. Imam does look a good prospect. But Shafiq will definitely play. I am sure our think tank will go with expected option of Shan; Abid; Azhar; Azam; Shafiq; Alam (Hopefully not Shadab)

I would surely bench Asad for Fawad and bring in Imam for Shadab if there is not much spin at Southampton. Further as Azhar is the captain he has to play probably but, I wont play him with his reflexes at no 3 now. Shan and Fawad can contribute as 5th bowler. Abid deserves another go I think.

I still think Shaheen and Naseem are much better than the lot on the bench but, if anything they should assess fitness and rest one by replacing him with Sohail Khan or Shinwari if necessary.

Shan
Abid
Imam
Babar
Azhar
Fawad
Rizwan
Yasir
Naseem/ Sohail Khan/ Shinwari
Shaheen
Abbas

If they want to rest Naseem, they will have to use Shaheen in short spells and full throttle.

Agree with most of this. Don't see Waqar (the guy literally just said that there did not use to be so much analysis in our days, now there is too much data - think it was in response to lack of bowling plans to CW/JB) or Misbah (naam hi kaafi hai) enacting any tactical masterstrokes here. Naseem likely to be played regardless (already a narrative of them needing to bowl more is being spun) and Yasir will be played on the back of his 8 for XX.

Would agree with 4 pacers, NS and YS rested. Fawad slotted in. Guess given the rain, it'll be pointless to play Shadab either. Who'll be the fourth pacer though?

If Azhar wins the toss, considering the weather I think PAK should bowl first. This will need England more time to win the Test and if PAK can keep the series alive, there is a small chance that they can win 3rd Test at same venue on a more used track. If it ends 2-0 here, surely PAK will lose if 3-0, but a draw even through back door can do wonders for the moral. Batting first won’t give ENG much advantage here as we saw against WIN, but PAK might not post a decent total on day 1/2 batting first.

But PAK has made a habit of losing Tests it should draw the last 4-5 years.

Will not be surprised if this ends in the same dismal collapse on Day 5.

I dont want a wash-out. The first test was quite entertaining, here's hoping for some good fun in this test too.
