how could it be board decision?werent the SA cricket board backing pak to host the CT afew days back or atleast there werent no negative coments from them...and now all of a sudden it was their decision to pull out?

i dont think it will be held in pak.. all major players willlll pull out

The washed out T20 game (declared washed out a day before the game) counts as a game for Collingwood ban

why do we even have a thread discussing this match after waht happened today? we should boycott any match updates between these teams for a short period!!...

no boycotting.. we are a DEMOCRATIC site !! ;-)

as u can see this thread is kind of dead up anyways :D:D

The T20 cup genius Philander has dropped a simple catch again

10.5 Nel to Prior, no run, dropped, and it's an absolute sitter, one of the easiest catches you can hope to get, Prior was beaten by a slower ball on a good length just outside off stump, he tried to drive and took one hand off the bat as he chipped the ball tamely towards mid-off, Philander was the fielder and the ball came to him at head height at a gentle pace, it hit his hands and fell right out

in T20 cup it was
9.1 van der Wath to Uthappa, no run, short one banged in outside the off stump, Uthappa goes for another front-foot pull. The ball balloons up towards mid-on. Vernon Philander drops a clanger. He just doesn't watch the ball properly and lets it pop out of his hand. Graeme Smith is not amused. That was a sitter

Eng 65-0 after 17 overs

19.3 Kallis to Bell, OUT, caught! Splendidly done by de Villiers! Kallis bowls a slower ball wide outside off stump, Bell chases it and slashes the ball in the air towards point, de Villiers times his jump to perfection and leaps high in the air to take the catch above his head with both hands
IR Bell c de Villiers b Kallis 35 (69b 0x4 0x6) SR: 50.72

Eng 77-1
Owas Shah in

Bell gone after making a torturous 35 off 69 balls. South Africa were probably wanted him to staty and eating a few more deliveries. Anyways in comes Shah at 77 for 1.

Ah good, Shah in and KP next - two who can actually get it off the cut strip....

"No-one has mentioned the fact that Bell batted for 19 overs during the powerplays without scoring a boundary - criminal really & quite some achievement!" observes Andy.

Pietersen 4 - Shah 4
Eng 92-2 after 23 overs

"What's the point of packing your team with 8 one-day specialist batsmen if your not going to take any risks and just defend out 20 overs of power-plays? asks Abhinay.

Comment on Cricinfo commentary.

Shah 12 sweeps Botha and ball goes straight to Philander. Takes the catch on the second try :)

28.1 Botha to Shah, OUT, Philander juggles and he'll thank the heavens it actually stuck, flighted on middle and leg, he gets on his knee and gets a big top edge on the slog sweep, Philander at fine leg gets under it, tries to catch it Aussie style, the ball slips through his hands and he holds onto it when it rebounds off his chest

Eng 113-3 after 28.1
Flintoff in

Pietersen 28 - Flintoff 8
England 134-3 after 34.0 overs @ 3.94

Pietersen has been little lucky

30.3 Botha to Pietersen, no run, Appeal! Walks across his stumps to sweep, exposes all three stumps and it looked like he was hit in front, the umpire Gould probably reckoned he hit it

32.2 Botha to Pietersen, 2 runs, is that a run out? Was the bat in the air? Pietersen played the ball off his pads behind square and set off for the single, he turned around and sprinted back for the second, Philander threw the ball flat and hard right over the stumps, Pietersen dived full length and his bat was bouncing all over the place as Boucher broke the stumps, it was too tough to give for the third umpire

Some superb strokes from KP in the last few overs. Really upping the run rate now.

181 for 3 from 40 overs

Pietersen 57(59) - Flintoff 38(41)
Eng 194-3 after 41 overs @ 4.73
last 5 overs 42 runs

Terrific innings of Flintoff (78 off 70) comes to end as he walk to the off side to flick and is bowled by Steyn

England 272-4 after 49.3 overs @ 5.49
Pietersen on 89 off 81

6.04 pm: England were 118 for 3 in the 29th over when Pietersen and Flintoff began their partnership. They added 158 runs at over a run a ball to boost England to a formidable total. There's not much in the pitch for the bowlers though. England have set South Africa a target of 276 to win. I'll be back at 6.45 pm for the run-chase.

England 275-4 after 50 overs @ 5.5

TMS talking to someone (sounds from ECB) about CT

276 to get in 50 overs.. SA to win by 5 wickets. Smith and kallis should get big scores here...

275 is a good score .. if england bowlers get a few quick wickets.. then it will be tough! Should be a cracker of a game

The commentators have been saying that England will need about 270 as there is not much in the pitch but batting in lights here will be hard as ball might swing but big concern is the lights are not international standard. I am guessing they are too low and probably not the brightness

free runs coming - 5 wides in 6 overs (4 from Anderson)
Gibbs 11 - Smith 15
SA 36-0 after 6 overs - need 240 more to win @ 5.45

Smith 21 ct behind off Harmison
SA 50-1 after 7.4 overs - need 226 more to win

Gibbs 37 is bowled by Patel. Making room to cut a short ball and is bowled
SA 93-2 after 15.4 overs - need 183 to win @ 5.33
Kallis 24*

Is that...Matthew Hoggard commentating on TMS? Always the sign of a dying career!

on TMS it has been Hoggard (on now), Gooch and Pollock
During test series they interviewed him and he seemed to suggest his international career might be over and was not counting on it though he is bowling for Yorkshire but chance to play for England looks slim

Malik replaces Patel after one over and brings Harmison back
SA 100-2 - after 17.2 overs Eng was 67-2???

Kallis 52 run out
SA 149-4 after 29 overs - need 127 more to win @ 6.04
Duminy 3*

Look at this, as if he has won the series with that run-out :)))

SA 211-6 after 42 overs - need 65 runs @ 8.12
Philander 3 - Botha 23

Harmison's taken 2 for 43 on his ODI comeback. The last time he played here he conceded 97 off ten overs so it's been a massive improvement on that.

surprising that this is only his 47th ODI but has played 58 tests

Malik does a side hug and pats him

Philander makes GoJo look like Ian Healy

Excellent win for ENG.

I expected the S African ODI to struggle or at least not be as good as they were 6 months ago and it seems the struggle has started.

KP seems to have galvanised this England side.

It was good to see the Bash Brothers KP and Fred smacking it about.

England seem to have a very good pace attack for ODIs (judging just by this game). Harmi, Fred and Broad are all hitting 90 mph and Jimmy is close to that speed.

Agree Robert; great start to England's ODI campaign vs SA. Hope they win the series.

Well done England! Pietersen appears to have the midas touch at present and England need to make the most of the gold rush.

South Africa have resurrected the chokers tag, assuming they ever lost it, that is.

Besides the standard field placements (which is what you expect in ODI cricket these days), there's a touch of Warne in Pietersens decision making. The two things you can say about Warne's captaincy was that he lead by example with his genius and he was also a very thoughtful gambler. When Pietersen delayed the third PP and brought on Samit and got Gibbs, I couldn't help but imagine what Warne would have done and when you think about it, he would have probably done the same thing (with a bit more flamboyance). There are other better examples during the game, but I felt this was the most obvious one to point out. BTW I'm not saying he's the next Warne-like captain, I'm just sugesting his gambles have a touch of Warne in them but with a bit more good-luck.

I didn't see most of the match but what went for Pietersen in both his first matches was his batting. That was the key in both wins. That is a very good sign for him and Englan team. I don't know how he captained but bringing himself on to bowl was a good move and paid both times. Captaincy cannot be judged yet. If he loses next two matches then he will probably becomes average captain again

This is the point I was making; not necessarily that Pietersen is a good captain but rather that it seemed today that he was destined to succeed - nothing was going to stop him. As captain he has played 3, won 1 and I would like to see how he goes playing away from home, especially on the subcontinent where England are notoriously poor and where it will not be possible to compensate for the lack of a spinner with pace alone.

KP will have to assemble the right batting line for India. I think that:

Vaughan
Cook
Shah
KP
Bell or Colly
Fred

...will give him the best chance.
