Erling Haaland - Borussia Dortmund wonderkid

Borussia Dortmund and Norway striker Erling Braut Haaland, 21, will be Manchester United's top target next summer despite the arrival of 36-year-old Portugal forward Cristiano Ronaldo from Juventus

Erling Braut Haaland scored twice on his return from injury as Borussia Dortmund went top of the Bundesliga with victory over Mainz.

Marco Reus had already put Dortmund ahead when the Norwegian forward, who had been out since late September with a muscle injury, scored a penalty, awarded for handball.

Jonathan Burkardt scored to narrow the deficit late on.

But Haaland settled the match with his second in added time.

The 21-year-old has now scored a remarkable 49 times in 49 league matches for Dortmund and 70 goals in 68 matches in all competitions.

"It is clear he had been missing in our team," Dortmund captain Reus said. "It is important that he plays because he constantly keeps two or three players occupied.

"To score two goals on his comeback is top. That is why we signed him."

The win was Dortmund's ninth in succession at home and takes them two points clear of reigning champions Bayern Munich, who are away at third-placed Bayer Leverkusen on Sunday.

Erling Haaland's agent Mino Raiola says there is a "big chance" the striker will leave Borussia Dortmund this summer and has listed Manchester City as a possible destination.

The 21-year-old has scored 74 goals in 72 games for Dortmund since joining the club in January 2020.

Haaland reportedly has a £64m release clause in his contract this summer and has previously attracted interest from City, Manchester United and Chelsea.

Asked when Haaland's next move will be, Raiola told SPORT1: "Maybe this summer, maybe the summer after. But there is a big chance that Erling will leave this summer. We will see.

"He can and will take the next step. Bayern, Real, Barcelona, City - these are the big clubs he can go to. City have won the championship five times in the last few years, much more than United.

"We all knew when we moved to Dortmund that this step would come."

Leeds-born Haaland, who is the son of former Man City player Alf-Inge Haaland, has a contract with the German side until the summer of 2024, but Raiola confirmed the Norwegian will discuss his future with the club this winter.

The Italian super-agent said: "We will tell BVB [Borussia Dortmund] what our idea is and BVB will tell us their ideas. But no decision will be made in the winter.

"He is someone who wants to develop, who is looking for new challenges. And of course it's also a question of the alternative. You only change if you have a better alternative."

Asked whether Haaland has a release clause between £55m and £77m, Raiola responded: "Whatever is in a contract is in a contract. That remains between me and the player.

"There are only two parties who are allowed to say something to the outside world - the club and the player. I never talk about details. We and Dortmund know exactly what has to happen. We have structured it very clearly.

"Contract or not, we always have very open communication with [Hans-Joachim] Watzke, [Michael] Zorc and now [Sebastian] Kehl. We deal with each other honestly. That is much more important than anything written on paper.

"Paper is only there if something goes wrong, then you need that. But not otherwise."

Barcelona president Joan Laporta was asked directly about signing Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund in the summer transfer window and he insisted that anything is possible.

Erling Braut Haaland: Barcelona could sign Borussia Dortmund striker in summer, says Guillem Balague

Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Braut Haaland could join Barcelona in the summer despite them being more than a billion euros in debt, says Spanish football expert Guillem Balague.

The 21-year-old Norwegian has a 75m euros (£62.6m) contract release clause that could see him leave Dortmund at the end of the season.

"Barcelona need to get rid of big wages and big players, but it's possible and they're confident they can do it," said Balague on BBC Radio 5 Live's Euro Leagues podcast.

Barcelona, despite the promise from the new president Joan Laporta to keep him, had to let Argentina forward Lionel Messi leave on a free transfer last summer because of La Liga's financial fair play rules, but also because they did not fully believe Messi was the future of the club.

But they did sign 21-year-old Spain forward Ferran Torres from Manchester City in a £46.3m deal last month, with Laporta saying Barca were "back as big players" in the transfer market.

However, they have not yet been able to register Torres because of financial reasons.

"Laporta is selling a hopeful future," added Balague, who said Barcelona are finalising a loan from American investment bank Goldman Sachs of 1.5bn euros to rebuild the stadium and its surroundings, which has to be added to the 595m euros they already got from the bank. Some of the loan money will cover the 1.3bn euros debt that Laporta has admitted the club has to face.

"He's trying to imply they are up for getting any of the big players and Haaland is possible, very possible.

"How do they get Haaland? They get rid of a bunch of players and Philippe Coutinho, Samuel Umtiti, Sergino Dest, Clement Lenglet, Frenkie de Jong, Martin Braithwaite, Oscar Mingueza, Luuk de Jong are for sale and then they're able to bring in someone. It's complicated, but not impossible."

Balague explained that Barcelona might retract from their rejection of a private investors CVC loan La Liga has got for its clubs, and that might help raise the wage cap.

Haaland has scored 76 goals in 74 games for Dortmund in all competitions since joining from Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg in January 2020.

Erling Haaland: Man City in pole position if Borussia Dortmund striker wants transfer to Premier League this summer

Erling Haaland will meet with Borussia Dortmund to decide his future in the next fortnight, with Manchester City retaining pole position if the striker decides to move to the Premier League this summer.

A £64m release clause in Haaland's Dortmund contract becomes active in the summer, with a host of major European clubs monitoring the Norwegian's situation.

Last week, Dortmund director Sebastian Kehl said the club will sit down with Haaland "in the next few weeks", adding: "It would be good if a decision doesn't drag on forever."

Meanwhile, Haaland's agent Mino Raiola admitted last month there is a "big chance" his client will leave at the end of the season, listing City as one of the possible destinations.

Raiola told SPORT1: "He can and will take the next step. Bayern, Real, Barcelona, City - these are the big clubs he can go to. City have won the championship five times in the last few years, much more than United."

Guardiola refused to discuss the prospect of City signing Haaland in December, saying: "Next question - don't ask me about that. I won't answer."

City missed out on the capture of Harry Kane as a replacement for outgoing all-time top goalscorer Sergio Aguero last summer, leaving them short of options in the striker department.

£65M release clause in his contract this summer which is peanuts for Man City.

Although if Salah goes, Liverpool could be interested.

And you can never count out the likes of Barca, PSG, Real Madrid and Man Utd.

Real Madrid or Barcelona must spend 350 million euros (£292m) in order to sign Norway striker Erling Braut Haaland from Borussia Dortmund, a figure that includes the 21-year-old's transfer fee, wages across a six-year deal and commissions paid to his agent Mino Raiola and his father. (Marca)

Erling Haaland: Borussia Dortmund striker opens up on why he felt it was the right time to talk about his future

Erling Haaland says it is time to "move on" from comments he made earlier this month in which he said Borussia Dortmund were pressuring him to make a decision over his future.

Haaland, who scored before going off injured in Saturday's 3-2 victory over Hoffenheim, has a contract with Dortmund until the summer of 2024, with a £64m release clause understood to come into effect this summer.

But earlier this month Haaland said Dortmund were urging him to decide where he wanted to be sooner rather than later.

Manchester City are thought to be frontrunners for Haaland's signature should he decide to move to the Premier League.

Asked why he felt it was important to publicly address his situation, Haaland told Sky: "I don't really want to say too much about it, but I felt it was time for me to say something.

"A lot of others were speaking - so that was it. Now, I don't want to say too much. I said what I said, and now we move on."

One of football's worst kept secrets is that Erling Haaland will be on the move in the summer window as his £64million release clause becomes active.

With every top club in Europe eyeing the Borussia Dortmund striker, any move to Liverpool may prove extremely difficult, but not impossible.

"You can see in England it’s full stadiums. If you look on TV you’d rather put on the English game, full of fans, more emotions, more alive the game," Haaland said in the report.

Erling Haaland is still a Borussia Dortmund player, having stayed on at the Bundesliga club beyond the January transfer window, but he could depart this summer and several clubs have been linked with him, including Real Madrid and Barcelona.

While Gerard Pique would always prefer for the top talents to end up at Barcelona, he also believes that it would be better for Haaland to go to the Camp Nou than the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, assuming Kylian Mbappe does join Real Madrid at the end of this season.

In a chat with Ibai Llanos on Twitch, Pique explained his reasoning.

"If I were Haaland and I wanted to win the Ballon d'Or, I wouldn't move to the same team as Mbappe," he said.

Those comments created headlines across Europe and especially in Germany, for example on leading daily Bild.

A piece in the German newspaper suggested that Pique was simply concerned about the prospect of potentially facing both Mbappe and Haaland in Clasicos next season.

bad business by BD - they should have given him a better contract after his first season or even 18months and added a buy out clause of £80-£90m, they should have known man city/ man united / liverpool/ bayern/ Juve/ Real Madrid/ Barca will be keen on him - none of the above teams have a centre forward who is in thr prime/ young to stay - even if the managers of above clubs didnt want haaland the owners will interfer and bid- 1 only rival is mbappe- will leave to one of the above teams shortly - that means thrs 1 less club after haarland

Man City, Real Madrid and Barcelona waiting on final Erling Braut Haaland decision, says Guillem Balague

Manchester City, Real Madrid and Barcelona have all spoken to Erling Braut Haaland and are awaiting a decision on his future in the next 10 days, reports Guillem Balague.

The Borussia Dortmund striker's contract expires in 2024 but a release clause allows the 21-year-old to leave for £63.2m this summer.

"None of the three clubs know what is going to happen," said Balague.

Bayern Munich had been linked with a move but are now out of the equation.

And Balague, BBC Sport's European football expert, added: "The offers are pretty similar. None of the clubs wanted it to be about money so they more or less accepted what was asked of them. So the choice is not about money.

"The clubs presented their projects, how they are going to play, how they will use him and everybody who is anybody in those clubs has been part of those discussions, including managers and directors.

"Staying put at Dortmund is still a possibility and if he does that it means he will stay for another year and then go to Madrid or Barcelona, because ultimately he wants to go to La Liga.

"Real Madrid are his number one choice, but City are playing on the fact that at Madrid there is Kylian Mbappe almost certainly arriving in the summer and Karim Benzema is still doing well as their main striker. And they are pointing out that Barca aren't in a position to challenge for all the titles at the moment.

"The timing and circumstances actually play in favour of City a bit.

"The way City approached it was also to say 'you're very young, have a few years here and then you can have Real Madrid in the future'.

"There was a question put from the the Haaland camp to Manchester City, 'What about Pep Guardiola's future?' And the answer that came back was that he will think about staying longer - his contract runs out in 2023. City are hoping to convince him to stay another year at least."

Norway striker Haaland has scored 23 goals in 22 games for Dortmund this season and has been superb for the German club since joining from Red Bull Salzburg in January 2020.

Erling Haaland: Man City ready to trigger Borussia Dortmund striker's 75m euros release clause

Manchester City are ready to trigger the 75m euros release clause in Erling Haaland's contract in a bid to bring him to the Etihad Stadium this summer.

Pep Guardiola's side have been leading the race to sign Haaland this year and his release clause means Borussia Dortmund are resigned to losing the striker this summer.

The 75m euro fee - which equates to £62m - for Haaland is widely considered to be below market value, but reports in the English media on Tuesday suggest City will have to pay the 21-year-old - who is represented by Mino Raiola - more than £500,000 per week.

But Guardiola refused to discuss City's move for Haaland in Tuesday's pre-match press conference ahead of Wednesday's home game against Brighton.

When asked about the club's interest in the Norwegian, the Spaniard responded: "[I have] no answer to your question.

"I have no concern or business in my head right now to think about what is going to happen in this club next season."

City have often played without a recognised striker this season following the exit of club-record goalscorer Sergio Aguero at the end of the 2020/21 campaign.

Asked whether his side needs a number nine, he replied: "We are playing with good strikers this season, so I don't know what is going to happen in the future. It's next season, so I'm not going to talk [about it]."

Asked later in the press conference about whether he wants his scouts to look for players with total dedication to the game, Guardiola replied: "I completely agree.

"The scouting should take a lot of looking at this type of behaviour, absolutely. Football is not just a skill. That's just one part, but the other part is much more important."

Looks like Haaland is very likely on his way to Man City next season.

Erling Braut Haaland: Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola refuses to speak about Norwegian

Pep Guardiola refused to talk about Manchester City's prospects of signing Erling Braut Haaland but the feeling is he will end up joining the club.

Borussia Dortmund striker Haaland has a 75m euros (£62.3m) release clause.

City and Real Madrid have been viewed as the likely destinations for the Norwegian.

But with Real trying to secure Kylian Mbappe on a free transfer from Paris St-Germain, City have made Haaland a priority.

Blues officials have refused to comment on the situation and Guardiola followed suit when he was asked about fresh reports of a deal being agreed between City and Haaland.

"I have no answer to your question," he said on Tuesday. "I have no concern about what will happen in this club next season.

"We are playing with good strikers and for many years I never talk about transfers, especially when we are playing for this season."

However, Guardiola has spoken repeatedly this season about wanting a number nine after his failure to lure Harry Kane from Tottenham last summer.

And, while the City boss remains a huge admirer of Kane, the fact the 28-year-old still has two years left on his contract with Spurs means, financially, signing Haaland now makes more sense.

The 21-year-old has enhanced his reputation this term with 25 goals in 26 appearances for Dortmund this season, including a double in Saturday's 6-1 win over Wolfsburg.

He has scored 82 goals in 85 games since joining the Bundesliga side from Red Bull Salzburg in December 2019.

Haaland is keen to test himself at a higher level and Dortmund have always known they were vulnerable to an approach from one of Europe's biggest clubs.

It is anticipated Haaland's agent Mino Raiola will pocket a sizeable fee for his part in the transfer if it does go through and there is understandable caution around the direction of talks until they have reached a successful conclusion.

However, within the game, it would now be seen as a surprise if a deal with City was not finally agreed.

I'm surprised City didn't try to sign him at the end of last season.

If they had done, they'd be Premier League champions already this season.

Looks like Harry Kane missed out on his brief chance last summer to become the Man City star striker for the long term.

It’s Haaland time.

Dortmund refused to let him leave.

No doubt a huge signing even for a team like City.

He's young, strong , powerful and a great finisher. Haaland seems made for the Premiership.

Will be interesting to see if Pep changes his play with Haaland , a little more direct and more crosses in the air imo.

Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Braut Haaland is "very close" to reaching an agreement to join Manchester City, according to Guillem Balague.

Haaland's contract expires in 2024 but a release clause allows him to leave for 75m euros (£62.8m) this summer.

Balague believes City have sold the Norway forward, 21, the idea of joining now before moving on to Real Madrid.

"He will be at Manchester City, I feel," said Balague, the BBC Sport's European football expert.

"There's no agreement but they're very close."

City, Real and Barcelona all spoke with Haaland, with the former Red Bull Salzburg striker ruling out Barca before Karim Benzema's recent form for Real apparently made up his mind.

The France striker, 34, has scored successive hat-tricks in the Champions League knockout stages, helping him to a career-best 39 goals so far this season.

"Haaland has known for a while what Real Madrid and Manchester City are offering, and others, but those are the two clubs that are left," Balague said on the Euro League podcast.

"Something has happened in the last couple of weeks, something called Benzema, that has turned the mind of Haaland into 'you know what, I can go to Madrid in two or three years'.

Might have gone out of the spotlight but he is a scary scary prospect.

21 goals and 7 assists in 23 league games, 3 in 3 in the UCL this season. 21 years-old.

Getting ridiculous these deep City pockets.

He has apparantly passed the medical. Hopefully City doesn’t violate the Financial Fair Play rules.

Im sure its fine.

A great signing for City, far better than injury prone & slow runner Harry Kane.

Haaland will score a hatful of goals in this City side and will be on his way to become the GOAT in Norwegian football.

Manchester City could announce the signing of Erling Haaland this week, with the player reportedly having his medical with the club on Monday.

The reigning Premier League champions have won the race to sign arguably the most exciting talent in world football.

Erling Haaland is poised to become a Manchester City player this week after passing a medical and the Premier League champions telling Borussia Dortmund they will activate the 21-year-old’s €75m (£64m) release clause.

The deal is expected to be announced imminently by the German club, Haaland having informed them of his wish to leave after two-and-a-half years in Germany. Personal terms between the player and City have been agreed. Haaland will earn a basic salary of around £350,000 a week with considerable bonuses and is poised to sign a five-year contract.

City are already a great team and now that they have acquired a genuine world class striker, from next season they might become the GOAT team.

Thinking about their occasional draws and losses this season, most if not all of these would have been City wins if they had put away a couple more of the many chances that they create in open play via their ridiculously good midfielders and wingers/forwards.

They are about to become phenomenally good and will dominate English domestic football even more than they have done so before.

And they might even win the Champions League! :)

Striker Erling Haaland scored and was given an emotional goodbye in his final match for Borussia Dortmund.

Haaland, who is set to join Manchester City this summer, scored a penalty in Dortmund's 2-1 win over Hertha Berlin.

Before the game, Dortmund's last match of the season, there was a ceremony to mark the Norwegian's departure with the Dortmund fans chanting his name.

He will leave having scored 86 goals in 89 games since joining from Red Bull Salzburg in January 2020.

"It has been nothing but an honour to wear this shirt," Haaland tweeted afterwards.

"At [Dortmund] I've spent memorable moments, met special people, not to mention a fan base that has been always our extra man on the pitch.

"I'll never forget any of this!"

Haaland, who passed his City medical in Belgium on Monday, will move to Manchester in July after the Premier League leaders activated a 60m euro (£51.2m) release clause in his contract.

His penalty equalised after Ishak Belfodil's spot-kick put Hertha ahead before 17-year-old Youssoufa Moukoko struck with a winner in the 84th minute.

Manchester City-bound striker Erling Haaland scored the winner for Norway as they began their Nations League campaign with victory in Serbia.

City said on 10 May they had reached a £51.2m deal to sign the 21-year-old this summer, although the transfer has not officially gone through yet.

Haaland scored from close range after clever approach play involving Arsenal's Martin Odegaard.

Sweden beat Slovenia 2-0 in the other game in Group B4.

Haaland has scored in his past six internationals, hitting nine goals in that period. In total, he has struck 16 times in 18 appearances for his country.

Erling Haaland will miss Norway's clash with Scotland due to his ankle injury.

Team doctor confirms injury is not serious but “he is in so much pain and somewhat restricted function that the Scotland game unfortunately comes a little too early”.

Erling Haaland has scored 49 goals in 47 Premier League matches for City.

A goal on today would mean breaking the record for fastest to 50 - with Andy Cole's 65-game feat the swiftest on record in the Premier League era.

Liverpool are one of two teams - along with Brentford - that Haaland has faced and not yet scored against in the competition.

Will that change today?

Haaland out until end of January for Manchester City

Erling Haaland is expected to be sidelined until the end of January, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has said.

The prolific Norway striker has missed City’s past eight games, including its FIFA Club World Cup triumph in Saudi Arabia, with a foot injury.

City had hoped to welcome the 23-year-old back early in the new year but the problem is proving more troublesome than expected and the player is not yet back in full training.

The expectation now is that he will be able to resume work as the club, without a game next weekend, travel to Abu Dhabi for a warm-weather training camp after Sunday's (AEDT) game at Newcastle United.

Guardiola said: “Yes, [he’s had] a little bit of disturbing problems in his feet. It’s fine but the doctors decided to stop for one week and maybe restart in Abu Dhabi.

“Hopefully at the end of this month he’ll be ready. It was a little bit more than we expected in the beginning.

“It’s the bone. It needs time. With every injury you can do whatever you want but it’s a question of time.”

Haaland scored 52 goals last season during an outstanding first campaign with City and had already netted 19 this term.

Guardiola feels his firepower has been sorely missed.

“We miss Erling a lot,” the Spaniard said. “We need him. Hopefully he can come back and play the last four or five months without a problem.

“When you are injured at end of November, you miss a lot of games. It’s the toughest period.”

In a further blow for City, defender Manuel Akanji is also facing a spell on the sidelines.

The Switzerland international was forced off early in last weekend’s FA Cup victory over Huddersfield Town after a heavy challenge.

He joins centre-back John Stones on the casualty list.

Guardiola said: “He will be some weeks out. It’s not a big problem but until the end of the month.

“Now we’re lucky that we don’t have games in the next 10 days after Newcastle. We’ll see how they feel in the good weather in Abu Dhabi.”

Breaking: Erling Haaland is back to regular training with Manchester City squad.

Excellent news for Pep Guardiola as Norwegian striker’s feeling better now and can be ready at the end of the month as expected.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has urged Erling Haaland to focus more on feeling relaxed than scoring goals

City resume their Champions League defence on Tuesday at FC Copenhagen in the first leg of their last-16 tie.

Haaland recently returned from two months out through injury and Guardiola feels the prolific Norwegian has been preoccupied by quickly getting among the goals again.

"He is defined on goals, but it is not just scoring a goal," Guardiola said.

"As much it's how he is clapping, encouraging his mates and the first intense press. This is what we need from Erling.

"But we cannot forget he has been two months out. Back to the dynamic is not easy.

"He's a huge competitor who wants to score goals. OK, we know that, so relax.

"If we don't score today, or if he doesn't score in 10 minutes, it's OK. In the process he has to try because the team always wins when they overcome bad moments."

Guardiola felt Saturday's Premier League win against Everton was a good example, with Haaland having a quiet first half before scoring twice in the second half to secure the 2-0 win.

"Erling is young, playing in the most difficult position on the pitch surrounded by four or five players with minor space," Guardiola added.

"In the first half maybe we didn't have the special delivery players, like Kevin [de Bruyne] for example, who can find him.

"In that moment he has to be positive. When he scored a goal he reacted, but he doesn't need to score because he helps us for many things."

The City boss added: "It looks like I am complaining about Erling but it was in general. How many games did Erling play and how many goals? His body language is not a problem.

"If he doesn't score tomorrow, the day after or next week, it's not a big issue."

Haaland was the top scorer in last season's Champions League, finding the net 12 times as City won the trophy for the first time. He has five goals in five games in this season's competition.

City will face an FC Copenhagen side who have not played for two months because of their winter break.

But Guardiola expects that to fire Copenhagen on rather than be an advantage for his side.

"I would say they are starving to compete and hungry and have full energy, fresh in legs and mind," he said.

"I don't know the rhythm but they have had lots of time to prepare for the game. Hopefully we can be in a good level to compete."

Copenhagen finished ahead of Galatasaray and Manchester United in Group A to reach the knockout stage, so Guardiola will not take them lightly.

"It's back to business in the competition but huge respect for the opponents," Guardiola said. "It was not an easy group and they did really well in all the games."

Luton Town 2-6 Manchester City: 'Machine' Erling Haaland sends ominous message to rivals

Erling Haaland delivered an emphatic and ominous warning to Manchester City's rivals after scoring five goals in their 6-2 win at Luton in the FA Cup.

The Norway striker, 23, made history as the first City player to score five in a game more than once as Pep Guardiola's side progressed to the last eight.

Haaland recently returned after two months out with a foot injury and, having taken time to work his way back to full fitness, he said he is ready to spearhead another City push for a treble.

Having achieved the feat last season, City are one point behind leaders Liverpool in the Premier League and hold a 3-1 lead going into the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie against Copenhagen.

"It's coming, we're coming," Haaland told ITV.

"My fitness? I am getting back to my best. Finally I am feeling good. It's an amazing feeling. Exciting times ahead. We are ready to attack."

The former Borussia Dortmund forward certainly looked close to his top level as he tormented the Luton defence at Kenilworth Road with a combination of his physical prowess, elite movement and ruthless finishing proving to be far too much for Rob Edwards' team to handle.

Haaland has broken countless records since arriving at Etihad Stadium in the summer of 2022 and has scored 30 more goals in all competitions than any other Premier League player since then, despite his absence this season.

"This is world class from Haaland, world class," former Manchester United captain Roy Keane said on ITV.

"He is prolific, making great runs, a natural scorer, great attitude. He is a machine."

Record-breaking Haaland

  • Haaland is the first player to score five or more for a top-flight club in the FA Cup since George Best v Northampton in 1970.
  • He is the first player to score five goals in a match twice for Man City.
  • Haaland is the first player to score at least five goals in an FA Cup tie (first round onwards) since Duane Darby for Hull City against Whitby in a first-round replay in November 1996 (Darby scored six).
  • This is the second time Haaland has scored five goals in a game in his senior career, previously doing so for City against RB Leipzig in the Champions League in March 2023.
  • Since his debut for City in July 2022, Haaland has scored 79 goals in 83 games in all comps, 30 more than any other Premier League player in the that time (Salah 49).
'The connection was perfect'

Four of Haaland's five goals at Luton were assisted by Kevin De Bruyne as the duo again showed why they are one of the most fearsome partnerships in world football.

De Bruyne has now assisted 16 of Haaland's 79 goals for City and is the first Premier League player to provide four assists for a teammate in a game in all competitions since Harry Kane for Son Heung-min for Tottenham against Southampton in September 2020.

"Erling is on fire and Kevin... the connection was perfect," Guardiola said after the match. "Kevin needs players like Erling and Erling needs players like Kevin.

"Erling needs a guy with the vision, the quality, the generosity. Kevin is the less selfish player in front of goal. Kevin needs the movement from Erling. We know how aggressive they are."

It is now nine assists in his past five FA Cup games for De Bruyne, one more than he managed in his first 23 appearances for City in the competition.

"Kevin de Bruyne is massive. He is doing what he is best at. It's a pleasure playing with him," Haaland said.

"We know what we both want from each other. It clicks well. He is a smart player and I like to play with him."

Next up for City is a Premier League derby against Manchester United at the Etihad on Sunday, and with two of their star men hitting their stride it could hardly come at a better time for the hosts.

"De Bruyne and Haaland are telepathic," Keane said. "They make it look simple but they are world-class players.

"The players and the manager smell it. This is big stuff, the players have done it before.

"Haaland and De Bruyne will be fresh mentally. Liverpool and Arsenal getting a lot of headlines, but I still think Man City will take some stopping."

Erling Haaland has been warned that a potential move to Real Madrid would present problems with adapting to life in La Liga

Haaland has continued to star for Manchester City this scoring, having won the Premier League's Golden Boot in his debut campaign. The Norwegian has an impressive record this term, scoring 31 goals in 39 games in all competitions.

He still has another three years to run on his contract at the Etihad Stadium. But that has not stopped the 23-year-old superstar from being linked with a blockbuster move to Los Blancos.

It is an open secret that the La Liga leaders are interested in signing Haaland in the future. But Haaland's international team-mate Alexander Sorloth has warned him that such a move may cause issues.

Villarreal star Sorloth highlighted Zlatan Ibrahimovic's struggles at Barcelona in his warning. The Swedish icon spent a year at the Nou Camp and has since blasted then coach Pep Guardiola for the way he was deployed.

"I don't think there is that much difference between some leagues and others nowadays. I think that is a matter of the media, believe me, I have been in England, in Germany, in Spain... And it's really not as different as people say," Sorloth told Relevo.

"So of course Haaland would adapt to Spain. Also, when you are a great player like Haaland, you have to adapt to the team, but the team has to adapt to it. If you remember Ibrahimovic , when he came to Spain he tried to adapt to Barça, but Barça had to adapt to him in many aspects.

"With Haaland it would be like that, let's say he comes here to a team ... I'm not going to say the team (laughs). Yes , he would have to adapt, but the team he went to would have to adapt to him because his qualities mean that a team has to adapt to him."

While he has a goalscoring record that most would envy, Haaland has come under fire for his performances this season. He requested to be substituted against Real Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday.

And earlier this month, Manchester United legend Roy Keane launched a scathing attack on the Norweigan's general play. Keane extraordinarily branded Haaland a "League Two player" following the draw with Arsenal.

“The level of his general play is so poor – and not just today; his laying stuff off, headers or whatever it might be. In front of goal he’s the best in the world, but his general play for such a player – it is so poor," Keane told Sky Sports.

"Not just today. He has to improve that. He’s almost like a League Two player – that’s the way I look at him. His general play has to improve. It will do over the next few years. [He’s a] brilliant striker but he has to prove his overall game. Has to.”
