Top talent but which of them is the better deal for the clubs?

Haaland right now looks the far surer bet. Proven at league and UCL level to be the real deal over the last few seasons. Nunez is a bigger question mark, and at a higher price.

Nunez now confirmed for LFC - big season lies ahead for him.

Community Shield: Darwin Nunez comes out on top, Erling Haaland struggles

The season-opening Community Shield between Liverpool and Manchester City was billed as a battle of two new strikers - and there was no doubting who came out on top.

Reds supporters have a new hero in Darwin Nunez, who immediately showed what prompted the club to pay Benfica £64m with a debut to remember.

The Uruguay international started as a substitute but won a late penalty which Mohamed Salah converted to put Liverpool 2-1 up, then scored his first competitive goal for the club to "put the icing on the cake" of his performance.

At the other end of the pitch, Erling Haaland had a first game to forget as the Norwegian missed opportunities in front of goal which contributed to his side's 3-1 defeat.

Asked by BBC Sport if he had any worries about the £52.2m forward's performance, City boss Pep Guardiola said: "No. He has incredible quality and he will do it. He has an incredible sense.

"The team was good in stages and I am very comfortable with what we have seen in pre-season. The season starts now."

Haaland will come good but it may take him some time.

City have played a brand of football that virtually didn't require a striker so it's going to take some time to change this tactic and approach.

Nunez outperforming Haaland much to the glee of LFC fans :)

Nunez the real difference for LFC vs Fulham or could have been an embarrassing defeat. Return on Investment on Nunez is already amazing!

Nunez in action tonight - lets see how he does

Red card for Nunez against Palace tonight.

Sheer stupidity from the striker.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp left his expensive summer signing Darwin Nunez to sleep on the moment of wild indiscipline that saw him make an early and undignified exit from his home debut in the Premier League.

Nunez, signed from Benfica in a deal worth an initial £64m, will have a restless night before facing Klopp after making the worst possible introduction at Anfield.

The Uruguayan has made a fine early impression with goals in the Community Shield win against Manchester City and the opening league draw at Fulham, but this incident which saw him sent off demonstrated a side of his character that will alert the more mischievous Premier League defenders and ensure Klopp must deliver some home truths ahead of his forthcoming three-match ban.

If there is one thing Nunez can take from his embarrassment, it is that it is better to learn your lessons early in the Premier League, and the 23-year-old certainly suffered a harsh one here.

Yes, there was what may be politely termed 'argy-bargy' with Palace defender Joachim Andersen, but Nunez's response was mindless - a headbutt that sent his opponent to the floor and referee Paul Tierney reaching for his red card.

It rules Nunez out of Liverpool's trip to Manchester United next Monday for starters, even more costly as Klopp needs all hands on deck as he juggles injury problems. He will also miss home games against Bournemouth and Newcastle United.

Nunez had worked tirelessly but gave the impression of someone trying just a little to hard to make the big impression, volleying one good chance over at the far post then bundling another opportunity against an upright in the closing seconds of the first half.

There is no doubt that graphic illustration of a short fuse will see Nunez's temperament tested now, but this chastening evening will surely form the basis of a vital learning experience.

Darwin Nunez became only the second Liverpool player to be sent off in his first Premier League appearance at Anfield after Joe Cole in 2010
Nunez has huge shoes to fill following the departure of Sadio Mane but Klopp is aware of the pressures and is more likely to adopt the arm around the shoulder rather than the big stick when it comes to handling his new striker, who looked shattered as he made his way to the dressing room.

Klopp, rightly, made no attempt to mount a defence or give an excuse for Nunez. It was an open and shut case.

Liverpool deserved the point Luis Diaz's brilliant equaliser gave them, a show of resilience with a numerical disadvantage, but Palace will also feel they earned theirs.

There was a sense of anticlimax at the final whistle at Anfield, with anxious Liverpool supporters already flagging up Manchester City's four-point advantage after only two games as they made their way out.

Of course, it is nonsensically premature to talk about this in the long-term context after only two games of the Premier League season, but so high has the bar been set by City and so imperious have they looked after the addition of Erling Haaland that such concern is almost understandable.

City have put their rivals under pressure from the start to such an extent that they know they cannot afford too many slip-ups from day one - and Liverpool have had two in two games.

It is, however, early days and Klopp will be hoping the list of injuries to key figures reduces so that Liverpool can hit their familiar, irresistible stride.

And Liverpool can take some heart from the outstanding display from 19-year-old Harvey Elliott, mature beyond his years, prompting, probing, always demanding the ball and fully deserving of the standing ovation he received when he was substituted.

Diaz was the goalscorer and much more. He led from the front after Nunez's dismissal, scoring a brilliant equaliser four minutes later, making a slalom run past Palace defenders from the left flank before firing home a 20-yard finish.

Liverpool were far from their best and it has been an undistinguished opening two games.

They will hope the sight of the Manchester United side they thrashed on two occasions will provide inspiration at Old Trafford next Monday - even without Nunez.

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville on Sky Sports: "It was a moment of madness. We saw in the first two games that he is combative. It was a proper butt to the under side of the nose.

"But he will learn a lot from that. I have done things like that in my career, we don't know why we react as footballers. You do things and you come off and think 'what have I done'. It is that red mist."

Crystal Palace defender Joachim Andersen says he has received 300-400 abusive messages on Instagram after he was involved in an incident that saw Liverpool's Darwin Nunez sent off.

Nunez was shown a red card after 57 minutes of Monday's 1-1 draw when he reacted to a shove from Andersen with a headbutt that floored the Dane.

Andersen posted examples of the abuse, some of which included death threats.

He has called on Instagram and the Premier League to act.

"Got maybe 3-400 of these messages last night," the 26-year-old said. "I understand you support a team but have some respect and stop act tough online."

He added: "Hope Instagram and the Premier League do something about this."

Palace are set to speak to Andersen to offer support. BBC Sport understands the player is fine but felt "enough was enough" and had to speak up about the abuse.

It is also understood one of the people who sent him an abusive message has reached out to apologise, saying he had sent it when "very drunk" and now felt "so stupid and was very sorry".

A Premier League spokesman confirmed the governing body had also been in touch with Palace to offer help.

A spokesperson for Meta, the owners of Instagram and Facebook, said: "We have strict rules against bullying and harassment and we are in direct contact with Joachim's team on the issue.

"Because DMs are private spaces, we don't proactively look for hate speech or bullying in the same way we do in other places, and we need someone to report the message in app before we can take action.

"No one thing will fix this challenge overnight, but we're continuing our work with the industry and Government to help keep our community safe from abuse."

In June it was announced that people convicted of football-related online hate crime can now receive banning orders that stop them from attending matches.

A 2021 PFA study found 44% of Premier League players received abuse online.

While Ofcom analysis of 2.3 million tweets in the first half of last season found nearly 60,000 abusive posts, affecting seven in 10 top-flight players.

In March, the Premier League said it had opened more than 400 investigations into the abuse of its players, managers, match officials and their families over the past year.

Its online abuse reporting system was launched in June 2020.

Meanwhile, plans for new internet safety laws in the UK have been put on hold until a new prime minister is in place in the autumn.

BBC Sport has contacted Instagram for comment.

11 goals for Haaland so far - machine?

Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez says he has found adapting to English football difficult but the Uruguayan accepts that has been partly self-inflicted.

Signed for an initial £64m, he scored on his Premier League debut, only to be sent off in the next game.

And if it wasn't for two members of Jurgen Klopp's coaching team, Nunez, 23, says he would have "no idea" what the Reds' German boss was saying.

"We don't talk much," he said. "I don't know English, he doesn't know Spanish."

Liverpool news and views in one place
Nunez has spent the last two seasons in Portugal with Benfica and two of Klopp's coaches - Pep Lijnders and Vitor Matos - speak Portuguese.

"They are the translators when Klopp talks to the group," Nunez told TNT Sports Brasil. "They sit next to me and explain what I have to do.

"If they didn't explain it to me, I'd enter the field with no idea what to do.

"But the relationship with the coach is that he supports me, gives me confidence and I have to repay that on the field."

After serving a three-match ban for his red card against Crystal Palace, Nunez has failed to score in five appearances for Liverpool.

But he made his first start for the Reds in a month on Tuesday, helping them beat Rangers 2-0 in the Champions League.

"The truth is that it was a little difficult to adapt but I believe that, as training and games go by, I will adapt little by little," Nunez added.

"[After the red card] was a very tough time. I know I made a big mistake and now I'm aware that it won't happen again.

"I have to calm my nerves during the games, talk less. We all make mistakes and I know it will serve as a learning experience.

"The important thing is to leave my mark on the team, be someone who can always contribute by playing well and, if I don't score, I have to be calm.

"When the first [goal] goes in, more will go in. I've been through that [before] and it's a little uncomfortable because, in the end, as forwards we live on goals.

"But I'm calm, the coach has always supported me. My team-mates also support me at all times and I will always try to help the team by scoring goals or, even without a goal, try to help the best I can."

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp hailed Darwin Nunez as a "massive talent" after the striker scored the only goal in a 1-0 win against West Ham.

At the moment Haaland is clearly the better off the two. He also has much better players around him too helping him but Nunez too is improving.

Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler believes striker Darwin Nunez will be a success at the club despite a stuttering start to his Anfield career.

They are very different players.

Haaland is obviously much closer to being the finished article, even though he is even younger than Nunez. He is cooler and calmer in front of goal, is two-footed and is better in the air and reads the game better. He is already the best Number 9 the world has seen since the original Ronaldo.

But Haaland is not a great dribbler and his vast size means that he lacks the acceleration of Nunez and relies on power instead. And he can't turn or change direction like Nunez. Plus, being Norwegian he will never have much of an international career.

Nunez is different. He is less calm, which shows itself both in his being easier to provoke and in him snatching at chances and missing too many of them.

But Nunez has much faster acceleration combined with above average strength, and he is far more mobile than Haaland. He has copied his compatriot Edinson Cavani in becoming a "box to box centre-forward", as Tim Vickery puts it, so he actually helps his team to press to win back the ball. And he makes similar clever runs to Cavani, but at much faster pace than Cavani or Haaland, which enables him to elude tight marking.

Nunez misses too many chances, but he creates far more havoc with his runs than Haaland does. And being Uruguayan means that he is mentally tough and has a fair chance of reaching the last four of the World Cup (Uruguay has reached the World Cup semi-finals five times, compared with England's twice) and of course there is 2030.

The 2030 World Cup Final will almost certainly be in the Estadio Centenario in Montevideo, Uruguay, where it all began 100 years earlier. Uruguay already has a central spine of four players (Araujo, Valverde, Betancur and Nunez) who aspire to be in that 2030 World Cup Final. You can arguably add Napoli's left-back Olivera to that list.

The idea of playing in a World Cup Finals tournament is the limit of Haaland's ambition. Nunez can aspire to actually playing in THE World Cup Final.

How was this ever a thing lol. Nunez has a worse touch than Lukaku. He's capable of a crack outside the area, can poach but a terrible crosser. Werner would have been such a better fit and almost a made Mane replacement.

Odd signing

Nunez is a terrible footballer. He plays for Liverpool, so he will score goals, but as an overall footballer, he is awful. Poor touch, control, finishing. The only thing going for him is his movement. He is basically a poor man’s Cavani and I don’t rate Cavani that highly, so you can imagine what I think of Nunez.

2 goals for Nunez tonight!

==

In an entertaining game, two goals by Uruguay forward Darwin Nunez before half-time put Liverpool in control.

Nunez, one of seven Reds players heading for the World Cup as it stands, made it 2-1 when he poked past Gavin Bazunu from close range before tapping home the third after Andy Robertson's assist.

Terrible? Exaggeration. Once he settles in properly, he will be deadly:

It is hard to compare the two when Haaland has much better quality team mates. Nunez is doing okay all things considered.

Incredible how Nunez was unable to finish after getting such a superb pass from Salah - just cant seem to score.

Nunez can work on his calmness, but he has that raw ingredients that Haaland does not have. Might sound stupid given the performance of both until now. But i agree with [MENTION=132916]Junaids[/MENTION]

What?

Erling is a pure striker, he reads the game perfectly, allways at right place in front of goal, very good technique and lol at posters questioning his acceleration above, he was the third quickest in Bundesliga and in one of the matches Sky Sports Italy calculated that he ran 60 metres in 6,64 seconds, that is crazy quick. Moreover his job is to score goals and win mathes for his team, he has been doing that for many years already.

There is top speed and then there is the burst of accelaration. Erling might have the former but compared to Nunez he does not have the latter. I am not disputing his output. Nobody can. I was just comparing their traits.

Liverpool: Jurgen Klopp compares Darwin Nunez to Robert Lewandowski

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp says he is not concerned about chances missed by Darwin Nunez in recent games, drawing comparisons with Robert Lewandowski's early career at Borussia Dortmund.

Summer signing Nunez, 23, has scored nine goals this season but has also squandered several big opportunities.

Klopp says Lewandowski had similar mixed form when he signed him for Dortmund from Lech Poznan in 2010.

"There are a lot of similarities to be honest," he said.

"I think Lewy would tell the same story. We had shooting sessions where he didn't finish off one. We had bets all the time for 10 euros - 'if you score more than 10 times, I will pay you 10; if you don't, you have to pay me'. My pocket was full of money!

"It's all about staying calm. When you see the potential, stay calm."

Nunez demonstrated why Liverpool had paid an initial £64m to sign the striker from Benfica in the summer when he hit seven goals in 10 games before the World Cup break.

However, following the resumption of domestic football, Nunez has missed a number of big chances in the 3-2 loss at Manchester City in the League Cup on 22 December and again in the Boxing Day win (1-3) at Aston Villa.

However, Klopp has no doubt Nunez will find his scoring touch again.

"I think we all agree that the potential is so obvious," he added.

"I think it's clear when you see the second chance, the big chance in the second half [against Villa], he can run a little bit on an angle and then he has a free choice, all these kind of things.

"But it is all coming. You do it like this, the next time you do it like that. I had this situation with Lewy but it is not only Lewy. He is the obvious comparison, I understand.

"It's just about staying calm and I am super calm. The team is calm as well, the team is completely convinced and that's really cool."

Nunez’s reading of the game, pace and ball control are incredible, but he seems to miss a lot of chances. He should have buried at least one of the clear chances that he has had against Leicester so far tonight and put this game to bed.

Nunez is a weird fellow. He also seems a bit thick & the language barrier is a big issue. However, he is clearly very talented & could explode in a year or so.

Haaland thought is a phenomenon. He is already one of the best number 9 in history. He is physically perfect.

Apart from delusional Liverpool fans, no one even thought about comparing these two.

Darwin Nunez might have cast some envious glances at Wout Faes' finishing during Liverpool's game with Leicester on Friday night.

Granted, Faes' two goals were in the wrong net as far as the Foxes defender was concerned, gifting Jurgen Klopp's side a 2-1 win that puts them within touching distance of the top four heading into 2023.

But while Faes scored with unwanted ease, Nunez's wastefulness in front of goal continued as he missed a hatful of chances to give Liverpool a far more comfortable margin of victory.

The 23-year-old's most notable efforts came in the second half as he sliced wide from close range, before lashing high over the bar when in a good position.

They followed on from some big misses in the Carabao Cup defeat to Manchester City on 22 December and in the 3-1 win against Aston Villa on Boxing Day.

"On another night, Nunez could have had a hat-trick," said former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher, who was commentating on the game for Sky Sports.

"We said that against Man City. We said that against Aston Villa.

"He is a handful, but to make that next step, become a world-class striker, he needs to get the goals."

Another bad night for Nunez.

I do think he will come good, but he’s no Haaland.

Nunez looks like one of those strikers who if he gets a couple of goals he could go on a run and score plenty.

However one area of his game he needs to improve is the number of times he is caught off-side.

At the moment he seems to be the next Timo Werner. Like Minamino Liverpool signed him on the back of two good matches versus us. I don't see him ever coming good.

Nunez equaliser in the FA Cup,

Absolutely a beautiful goal.

What’s he stopped for?’ – Jamie Carragher dumbfounded by Darwin Nunez moment

"What's Nunez stopped for?" he vented. "Just run across goal and put it into an empty net!"

The incident came about after Onana had come out of his goal to smash one in the stands before Mohamed Salah took a quick throw.

But Erik ten Hag's men have frustrated the Reds largely in their own yard - largely due to their own attacking mistakes.

That includes a chance for Nunez at a moment when Andre Onana and three defenders were left on the deck.

Liverpool are very happy with Darwin Nunez as he's the first Premier League player this season to reach 10+ goals and assists in all competitions.

LFC believing his development has been excellent, very happy with improvement and attitude.

Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez has been banned for five international games for an altercation with spectators after his national team Uruguay were beaten by Colombia.

Nunez, 25, was seen physically confronting Colombia fans in the stands after the final whistle in the Copa America semi-final in July.

The player has also been fined £15,145 ($20,000).

South American football's governing body Conmebol issued a statement on Wednesday stating five players had been banned, including Nunez, and 11 fined for their part in the altercation.

Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur, 27, has received a four-game ban.

Napoli defender Mathias Olivera, 26, Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo, 25, and Atletico Madrid defender Jose Maria Gimenez, 29, have all received three-game bans.

Conmebol had opened an investigation into the "unacceptable" scenes. The incident broke out in a section of the stadium where many family members of the Uruguay players were seated.

Nunez had climbed railings and made his way into the crowded stands.

"There was no police and we had to defend our families," said Gimenez at the time.

"This is the fault of two or three people who had a few too many drinks and don't know how to drink."

The bans are a blow to Uruguay boss Marcelo Bielsa, the former Leeds United manager, whose side are involved in several qualifying matches in September and October for the 2026 World Cup.

Uruguay face Paraguay in Montevideo in a qualifying match on 6 September.
