Uefa has "decisions to make" if Scotland cannot guarantee having fans at Euro 2020 games at Hampden, says Scottish FA boss Ian executive Maxwell.

But he said there is "no sign" yet of games being stripped from Glasgow.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said on Friday that Scotland is "absolutely intent" on hosting matches this summer.

That came amid concerns that a failure to say by 7 April how many fans will be allowed could result in Glasgow being removed as one of 12 host cities.

"We're working as hard as we can to get there," chief executive Maxwell told Sportsound on Saturday. "We're not at the point where there's any signs that the games will not be at Hampden.

"If we can't provide what Uefa require - the same as Wembley, the same as Baku, or Bilbao, or any of the other stadiums - then Uefa have got decisions to make."

Glasgow could be cut as Euros host city
Ms Sturgeon said on Friday that "all countries are grappling with this, not just Scotland".

She added: "We are standing here on 5 March and, while we are really hopeful and you are getting signs of a lot of optimism from us today, looking too far ahead is just difficult to do."

Maxwell confirmed that Uefa wants at least 20-30% of the stadium capacity filled by spectators and that the Glasgow organisers are "working on that as a minimum and trying to increase that".

"It seems feasible," he told BBC Radio Scotland. "At the moment, we have a spectator cap of 300 in a level one area, and no-one can be under any illusions that is going to have to change, but there has been a lot of improvements.

"We need to learn from other events across Europe and ensure we can get the number as high as it possible can be while doing it in the safest possible way."

On Friday, the Football Association told the BBC it would host more Euro matches if asked to do so by Uefa. Wembley is currently due to host seven games.

"We would be delighted to help, as would a number of other countries I'm sure, but that's not our understanding of the situation at the moment," said chief executive Mark Bullingham.

Scotland's men will this summer play at their first major tournament for 23 years in the Euro finals, which were postponed by 12 months because of the coronavirus pandemic.

With two of Scotland's three group matches scheduled to take place at Hampden, starting with the Czech Republic on 14 June, Ms Sturgeon said that makes the Scottish government "particularly keen" to host games.

While other host countries are also yet to formally say whether they will allow fans, some have given an indication of their intention to do so.

"While nothing in a global pandemic can be certain, I very much want and hope over the next few weeks [we] get a greater degree of confidence in saying we expect to be one of the many Tartan Army fans cheering on Scotland at Hampden later in the year," said Sturgeon.

Bullingham said he thought international fans may be allowed into the semi-finals and final at Wembley, with the earlier stages of the tournament restricted to domestic fans.

Benzema returns! Deschamps names France squad for Euro 2020

France head coach Didier Deschamps has named his 26-man squad for the upcoming European Championships – with Karim Benzema handed a stunning recall.

Benzema has not played for Les Bleus since 2015 and after being snubbed for their Euro 2016 squad, accused coach Deschamps of folding “due to pressure from France’s racist element” in an interview with Marca.

But the exiled 33-year-old has now been included by Deschamps following his stunning season for Real Madrid, in which he has scored 29 goals in all competitions.

Elsewhere, Raphaël Varane, Paul Pogba, Kylian Mbappé, Antoine Griezmann and Olivier Giroud have also been included.

Marco Reus withdraws himself from Euro 2020 selection

Borussia Dortmund midfielder Marco Reus has withdrawn himself from selection ahead of the European Championship this summer.

Reus remained largely injury free this season and was crucial for Dortmund as they secured Champions League football in unlikely circumstances.

But the 33-year-old believes taking time to rest – both mentally and physically – after a draining year will suit his domestic career best.

“After a complicated, exhausting season that was thankfully successful in the end, I decided together with the coach not to go to the European Championship,” he wrote on Instagram.

“This decision was very difficult for me because I am always full of pride when I am allowed to appear for my country.

“But after a very intense year for me personally and achieving my goals at BVB, I made the decision to give my body time to recover!

“I will make good use of the break in order to be able to start the new season optimally!

“I wish Jogi Löw and our team all the best for the tournament and I will cheer as a fan and keep my fingers crossed.”

Reus has made 44 appearances for Germany but was not part of their 2014 World Cup winning squad.

Steve Clarke has sprung a surprise by including uncapped trio Billy Gilmour, Nathan Patterson and David Turnbull in Scotland's 26-man squad for Euro 2020.

Chelsea's Gilmour, 19, Rangers' Patterson, 19, and Celtic's Turnbull, 21, are all under-21 internationals but have never previously been called-up.

Liam Cooper of Leeds United and Greg Taylor of Celtic, plus Hibernian's Kevin Nisbet, are also included.

It will be Scotland's first appearance at a major men's tournament since 1998.

Clarke's side face Czech Republic (14 June), England (18 June) and Croatia (22 June) in Group D, with the first and third games at Hampden in front of 12,000 spectators.

"Well done to the lads that have made the squad and a big thank you to the ones that haven't but have been part of the journey to get here," Clarke told the Scottish FA.

"When you've got talent coming through and players injured and three extra places, it's a chance to bring the young boys in.

"But I've tried to remain true to the spirt of the squad I've had before, and keep the core and nucleus together."

Turnbull scored nine goals in 35 appearances in his debut season at Celtic while Patterson helped Rangers win the Scottish Premiership and reach the last 16 of the Europa League.

Gilmour has featured 22 times since breaking into the Chelsea team last season and could play in this month's Champions League final against Manchester City.

Euro 2020: Thomas Muller and Mats Hummels recalled by Germany boss Joachim Low

Bayern Munich striker Thomas Muller and Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels have been recalled to the Germany squad for Euro 2020.

Germany manager Joachim Low has picked the pair in his 26-man squad, despite having told them in March 2019 he did not intend to select them again.

Muller, 31, has scored 11 goals and registered 18 assists in helping Bayern win the Bundesliga this season.

Hummels, 32, has won the German Cup with Dortmund.

On social media, Muller said "back again", while Hummels wrote he was "glad to be back" and "really up for the new chapter".

Germany suffered their heaviest competitive defeat when they lost 6-0 to Spain in the Nations League during November 2020.

"You can interrupt an overhaul under the circumstances," said Low, who will be leaving his post following the tournament this summer.

"In the defence we did not have the desired stability recently. Mats is a player who influences other players and brings experience."

Bayern Munich's 18-year-old attacking midfielder Jamal Musiala has also been picked by Low.

Stuttgart-born Musiala, who was in Chelsea's academy prior to joining Bayern in 2019, chose to represent Germany over England or Nigeria at international level.

Germany are Group F for Euro 2020 along with France, Hungary and Portugal.

The tournament is taking place between 11 June and 11 July, having been delayed by a year because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Germany squad
Goalkeepers: Manuel Neuer, Kevin Trapp, Bernd Leno

Defenders: Antonio Rudiger, Mats Hummels, Matthias Ginter, Niklas Suele, Emre Can, Lukas Klostermann, Robin Gosens, Robin Koch, Christian Gunter, Marcel Halstenberg

Midfielders: Joshua Kimmich, Ilkay Gundogan, Kai Havertz, Toni Kroos, Leon Goretzka, Leroy Sane, Jonas Hofmann, Florian Neuhaus, Jamal Musiala

Sergio Ramos has been left out of Spain boss Luis Enrique's Euro 2020 squad.

Real Madrid centre-back Ramos, 35, has been struggling with injury and has only played one game since the end of March.

His sole appearance came in Real Madrid's Champions League semi-final second-leg defeat by Chelsea on 5 May.

Manchester City defender Aymeric Laporte had his switch from France to Spain approved by Fifa recently and he makes the squad.

Spain squad:
Goalkeepers: Unai Simon, David de Gea, Robert Sanchez

Defenders: Jose Gaya, Jordi Alba, Pau Torres, Aymeric Laporte, Eric Garcia, Diego Llorente, Cesar Azpilicueta

Midfielders: Sergio Busquets, Rodri, Pedri, Thiago Alcantara, Koke, Fabian Ruiz, Marcos Llorente

Gareth Southgate has decided to delay the naming of his final squad for the Euros which was due to take place on Tuesday lunchtime, and instead will name a much larger provisional group, before he commits to the final names who will represent their country at the tournament

Bayern Munich's departing manager Hansi Flick will succeed Joachim Low as Germany boss after this summer's European Championship.

Low is leaving the role following the delayed Euro 2020, having been in the post since 2006.

Flick has signed a contract to be Germany manager until 2024.

"I am hugely excited, because I see the class of players, and especially young players, which we have in Germany," said the 56-year-old.

Germany national team director Oliver Bierhoff said: "He was top of my wish list from the very start."

Flick announced in April that he was leaving Bayern at the end of the season and will be replaced by RB Leipzig boss Julian Nagelsmann.

Flick was Low's assistant with Germany from 2006 to 2014, stepping down after they won the World Cup in Brazil.

He joined Bayern as Niko Kovac's assistant in the summer of 2019 and took over as interim boss when the former Croatia international was sacked the following November.

Flick then oversaw a stunning upturn in fortunes, winning the Bundesliga, German Cup and Champions League in 2019-20, earning a three-year contract.

Bayern also won the Club World Cup in February, Flick's sixth trophy in his first 16 months in charge.

However, this season he was frustrated with the lack of new signings and, despite retaining the Bundesliga title, they were knocked out of the Champions League by Paris St-Germain in the quarter-finals.

Uncapped Ben White, Ben Godfrey, Sam Johnstone and Aaron Ramsdale have been named in England's 33-man provisional Euro 2020 squad, while Liverpool's Trent Alexander-Arnold also makes the cut.

Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins is also named, but Leeds' Patrick Bamford misses out.

Gareth Southgate will name his final 26-man squad on Tuesday, 1 June.

Injured Burnley goalkeeper Nick Pope has not been selected.

One of the major talking points had been about right-back Alexander-Arnold, who was left out of Southgate's last squad in March.

With Atletico Madrid's La Liga winner Kieran Trippier, Manchester City's Premier League champion Kyle Walker and Chelsea's Reece James also in the squad, one of them is likely to miss out.

Netherlands coach Frank de Boer has finalised his 26-man squad for Euro 2020 with Steven Bergwijn the biggest casualty of eight axed players.

A lack of playing time at Tottenham Hotspur for 23-year-old Bergwijn over the final months of the Premier League looks to have cost him the chance of making the selection as De Boer chose instead the uncapped Cody Gakpo from PSV Eindhoven in his list of strikers.

Veteran goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg, who played in the 2010 World Cup final but only recently saw league action with Ajax Amsterdam after years as a reserve at Everton, was chosen as one of the three goalkeepers, ahead of Marco Bizot of AZ Alkmaar.

At 38, Stekelenberg will be one of the oldest squad members at the tournament.

Anwar El Ghazi, Hans Hateboer, Rick Karsdorp, Jeremiah St Juste, Kenny Tete and Tonny Vilhena were the other players dropped after the Netherlands completed a mini camp on Wednesday.

De Boer kept the 19-year-old Ajax Amsterdam defender Timber, who have made a strong impression in the second half of the Dutch league season but has yet to play for the national team.

Daley Blind, who suffered a serious ankle injury in March, was also included as he works his way back to full fitness.

The Dutch must do without captain Virgil van Dijk, who earlier this month said he would not try to return from injury at Euro 2020 but instead concentrate on being fit for the next Premier League season with Liverpool.

The squad will reassemble on Friday ahead of a week-long training camp in Portugal, where they will also play a friendly against Scotland on June 2. They will play a second warm-up international in Enschede against Georgia on June 6.

Their opening Euro 2020 Group C match is against Ukraine in Amsterdam on June 13.

Full squad
Goalkeepers: Jasper Cillessen (Valencia), Tim Krul (Norwich City), Maarten Stekelenburg (Ajax Amsterdam)

Defenders: Nathan Ake (Manchester City), Daley Blind (Ajax Amsterdam), Matthijs de Ligt (Juventus), Stefan de Vrij (Inter Milan), Denzel Dumfries (PSV Eindhoven), Jurriem Timber (Ajax Amsterdam), Patrick van Aanholt (Crystal Palace), Joel Veltman (Brighton & Hove Albion), Owen Wijndal (AZ Alkmaar)

Midfielders: Frenkie de Jong (Barcelona), Marten de Roon (Atalanta), Ryan Gravenberch, Davy Klaassen (both Ajax Amsterdam), Teun Koopmeiners (AZ Alkmaar), Donny van de Beek (Manchester United), Georginio Wijnaldum (Liverpool)

Forwards: Steven Berghuis (Feyenoord), Luuk de Jong (Sevilla), Memphis Depay (Olympique Lyonnais), Cody Gakpo, Donyell Malen (both PSV Eindhoven), Quincy Promes (Spartak Moscow), Wout Weghorst (Wolfsburg)

Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood has withdrawn from England's provisional squad for this summer's European Championships.

The 19-year-old was expected to feature in Gareth Southgate's 26-man party for Euro 2020 after returning to form at the end of last season.

However United say he will remain in Manchester for treatment on an "underlying injury".

Southgate will name his final squad for the tournament on Tuesday at 17:00 BST.

"Mason Greenwood has withdrawn from the provisional England squad in order to recover fully from an underlying injury that also kept him out of the Under-21 Euros in March," said a United statement.

"Mason's club appearances were managed carefully to maintain his availability through the intensive 2020-21 Premier League and Europa League schedule but a further spell of tournament football would not be beneficial and Mason will recuperate and prepare for pre-season training."

Greenwood made his England debut in the Nations League victory over Iceland last September.

He has not featured since after he and Manchester City forward Phil Foden were told to leave Southgate's squad as a result of a breach of coronavirus quarantine guidelines following that match.

United have not said what the injury is, however Greenwood's withdrawal from the European Under-21 Championships was because of a groin injury.

Greenwood featured in 52 games during the 2020-21 campaign, scoring 12 goals, as United finished second in the Premier League and reached the final of the Europa League.

England manager Gareth Southgate says failing to reach the semi-finals at Euro 2020 will be classed as a failure.

The Three Lions reached the last four of the 2018 World Cup and a run to the final would see them play all but one of their games at Wembley.

Asked if anything less than reaching the semi-finals would be deemed a failure, Southgate replied: "Yeah, it probably will.

"I think we're realistic about that, we have to live with that expectation."

And he added: "Are we ready to win? Well, we've been to two semi-finals so the next step is to try to go further."

Former Middlesbrough manager Southgate was appointed in September 2016 and oversaw the side's best finish at a major tournament since 1990 as they reached the semi-finals in Russia in 2018.

They also reached the same stage of the Nations League a year later.

"We know the excitement around the team and it's great, we're now relevant," added Southgate.

England come up against World Cup finalists Croatia in their opening game, followed by a huge match against neighbours Scotland on 18 June, rounding off Group D against the Czech Republic on 22 June.

'Right-backs are in the best 26 footballers'
Southgate said if he could have picked five or six right-backs for England's campaign he "would have done" after naming four right-backs in his 26-man squad.

Liverpool's Trent Alexander-Arnold is joined by Chelsea's Reece James, Atletico Madrid's Kieran Trippier and Manchester City's Kyle Walker.

Southgate said: "We have four players that play sometimes at right-back for their clubs.

"Basically they are in the best 26 footballers and that is why they are in the squad. If I could have picked five or six right-backs I would have done.

"We are here to play nine games. We already have some injury doubts in the group. We need adaptability, good players, good professionals, tactically savvy players and we are fortunate we have old and young players who fit all those categories."

Injured Maguire and Henderson 'have a bit to do'
Southgate was able to name 26 players in his squad to help with the workload on players following the coronavirus pandemic, three more than at previous tournaments.

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire is included despite missing the last four league games of the season and the Europa League final following ankle ligament damage.

Liverpool skipper Jordan Henderson also makes the cut, even though the midfielder has been out of action since February with a groin injury.

"We know exactly where he is at," Southgate said regarding Maguire's availability. "Our medical team have been with him in Manchester and he hasn't travelled to join up with us.

"Maguire and Henderson both have a bit to do to be available but the possibility is that they can play a part and the fact is that they are such fantastic characters to have around the group.

"Henderson, with his leadership and presence, is having an effect on other people, especially the younger ones. Given we were able to pick 26, the opportunity to have those two with us was a straightforward one."

With an average age of 25 years and three months, England will go into the tournament with one of the youngest squads.

Borussia Dortmund's 17-year-old midfielder Jude Bellingham is one of those included and will be the second-youngest England player to go to a major tournament after Theo Walcott in 2006.

Bellingham, who won the German Cup with Dortmund this season, is in line to win his third cap.

"He is phenomenal," Southgate said of Bellingham. "Just in training in the last couple of days, to have a 17-year-old who wants to compete with senior players, not only has the techniques but the competitiveness and maturity, he is a hugely exciting player.

"He will be an important player for England, we are not just taking him for the experience, that will be enormous for him and future England managers because I don't see with him anything in his character that means he won't succeed."

Kevin De Bruyne is likely to miss Belgium's Euro 2020 opener against Russia on June 12, says Roberto Martinez.

De Bruyne suffered facial fractures in a challenge with Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger in Manchester City's Champions League final defeat on Saturday.

The midfielder does not require surgery but Martinez is not sure when the 29-year-old will be available for selection.

When De Bruyne does return, the Belgium boss confirmed he will be fitted with a mask similar to the one worn by team-mate Jan Vertonghen after he was injured playing for Tottenham two years ago.
