The Euro 2020 Tournament (11 June to 11 July)

Wales were eliminated in the second round of Euro 2020 as they were thrashed by Denmark, whose inspiring journey at the tournament continues to the quarter-finals.

Backed by a fervent and almost exclusively Danish crowd, Kasper Hjulmand's side led as Kasper Dolberg curled in an excellent 27th-minute strike from the edge of the penalty area.

Dolberg struck again in the 48th minute as he seized on a defensive error from Wales substitute Neco Williams to smash in from close range.

That goal deflated Wales, who never looked like clawing their way back into the game as Joakim Maehle added a late third for the jubilant Danes.

Substitute Harry Wilson was then shown a straight red card for a late foul on Maehle before Martin Braithwaite struck a fourth goal in added time as Wales' exhausting campaign ended miserably.

Robert Page's men had performed well to get out of a difficult Group A which also featured Italy, Switzerland and Turkey, but this impressive Danish side proved a challenge too far.

Denmark had already provided the uplifting story of Euro 2020, showing admirable resolve to reach this stage having been galvanised by midfielder Christian Eriksen's recovery from a cardiac arrest.

The next stop on their fairy-tale voyage will be Baku for a quarter-final against the Netherlands or the Czech Republic next Saturday.

As for Wales, they will return home exhausted but, in time, proud of their efforts in reaching the knockout stages again in only their third appearance at a major tournament.

Denmark's fearless style of play and relentless attacking is benefiting them hugely in the tournament. What a clinical performance!

Wales were throughout one of the most boring teams. An exit fully deserved! A really poor showing by them.

Marko Arnautovic denied by VAR which rules out his header for offside, millimetres in that call.

Austria has been the better team thus far in this match. Still 0-0.

After a struggle Italy beat Austria. Not the best performance by the Italians but got the job done.

Italy needed extra time to see off battling Austria at Wembley and set up a Euro 2020 quarter-final against Belgium or Portugal.

Austria marked their first appearance in the knockout stage of the European Championship with a tireless performance to give their much-fancied opponents a scare.

Marko Arnautovic had a headed goal disallowed after a VAR check for offside in normal time when the game was goalless before goals from substitutes Federico Chiesa and Matteo Pessina sent Italy through.

Chiesa showed terrific technique to bring the ball down and beat Daniel Bachmann from an angle while Pessina, who scored in the group game against Wales, doubled the score from close range.

Austria pulled a goal back through Sasa Kalajdzic's brave header, the first goal Italy have conceded in 12 games, but the Azzurri's 31st match without defeat - a new national record - sees them march on.

Italy should have killed that match off in the first 45 minutes, but credit to Austria who fought hard.

Italy 2-1 Austria

Italy endured their most difficult night of Euro 2020 before beating Austria to reach the last eight - but they dug deep into the old playbook to finally see off such resilient opponents.

Coach Roberto Mancini is developing a potent mixture of youth and experience that impressed as much as anyone in the group phase, with Turkey, Switzerland and Wales seen off with the minimum of fuss.

Italy's intensity, work-rate and team ethic elevated them from outside fancy to potential winners in the eyes of many observers.

It has been backed up by a stellar sequence that has reached a new national record of 31 games unbeaten following this 2-1 win after extra time.

This was a real battle, Italy surviving a scare when Marko Arnautovic thought he had headed Austria in front in the second half only for VAR to intervene on an offside, but in the end Mancini's side found a different way to win, always the sign of a good side.

This was not the flair we saw in the group games. Indeed, for lengthy spells in the second half this spirited Austria side was on top and clearly sensing a shock, but this was when the traditional Italian mix of quality and durability kicked in.

And this is why, despite a previously undetected vulnerability being uncovered by Austria - even scoring the first goal Italy have conceded in 19-and-a-half hours when they threatened a late rally - Mancini's team will provide a tough test for either Belgium or Portugal in the quarter-final.

Italy were not flowing and there was a period when they were ragged that will give encouragement to any team containing quality on the scale of Belgium, with the likes of Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku, or Portugal and their talisman Cristiano Ronaldo.

What they did have was a determination to dig deep, overcome adversity and emerge successfully to spark jubilant scenes on the touchline between Mancini and his staff at final whistle.

The key here, and such a crucial component for any team wanting to prevail at a major tournament, was the quality Mancini was able to introduce off the bench to change the course of this game with Italy under serious pressure for the first time at Euro 2020.

Mancini brought on Matteo Pessina for Nicolo Barella after 67 minutes and Federico Chiesa for Domenico Berardi with six minutes left of normal time - and both came up with the goals.

BBC Sport's Alan Shearer said: "Credit to both teams for the energy and quality they showed in a very difficult extra time.

"We didn't see a way back for Austria at half-time in extra time but to their credit they came back and made it a very nervy ending for the Italians but the changes the Italians made won the game for them in the end."

And Danny Murphy, who was analysing the game for BBC Sport, added: "Sometimes in tournament football it doesn't have to be the best performance. You just have to get over the line any which way you can and the Italians have done it."

Italy have won four consecutive games at the European Championship for the second time, previously doing so in Euro 2000 when they ended up as losing finalists.

It was tough on Austria who, despite ending that superb Italian clean sheet record with Sasa Kalajdzic's late header, could not rouse themselves to take an entertaining last-16 game to penalties.

Italy march on towards an even tougher test in the quarter-finals but the elation at the final whistle was the reflection of a team that had not been at its best, been examined in ways they had not endured so far in 2020, but come through.

On the flipside, the flaws will be noted by whoever faces them next but the bottom line is Italy won in a manner that will bolster confidence because they can be so much better.

That was quite some match, wasn´t it? Three goals in Extra Time. The better team prevailed in the end, but Austria fought every tooth and nail. They really challenged Italy and, with some more luck, could well have won the match. There was one goal scored on off-side and a penalty might´ve been awarded to them had another Austrian player not been off-side just metres away from the scene. You need these little things to go your way if you´re to win a knock-out match against a quality opposition like Italy, but not to be. Again, however, they fought hard and can be most proud of their overall effort.

Regarding the first game, I forgot to add in my previous post that there was initially a period of 18 to 19 minutes or so where Wales seemed to be up for the occasion, and even Bale seemed a little determined, motivated, and threatening, but, past that point, Denmark simply ran away with the match.

Couple of cracking games today:

Netherlands v Czech Rep

Belgium v Portugal

Croatia forward Ivan Perisic has tested positive for coronavirus ahead of Monday's Euro2020 last-16 tie against Spain.

Netherlands 0-0 Czech Republic at HT

This is only the second time in the Netherlands' last 13 games it has been goalless at half-time. The other... was their 3-2 win over Ukraine.

France boss Didier Deschamps has warned his players should not "under-estimate" Switzerland and is preparing to overcome mounting injuries before Monday's Euro 2020 last-16 tie.

Deschamps saw two left-backs - Lucas Hernandez and Lucas Digne - go off injured in their final group game against Portugal.

For Monday's game in Bucharest, French media feel he will use a new formation.

It is thought Deschamps is considering a move to 3-5-2.

That would include Benjamin Pavard and midfielder Adrien Rabiot used as wing backs.

Deschamps - bidding to become the first man to win both the World Cup and European Championship as player and coach - has warned his side must simply "be at our best".

"We mustn't under-estimate them and it's a knockout game so we'll have to do everything we can to ensure we have smiles on our faces at the end of the match," said Deschamps, 52.

"They're a well-structured team and they have good attacking potential with Seferovic, Embolo and Shaqiri."

France are unsure on the fitness of Digne and Hernandez, have lost Ousmane Dembele to a knee injury for the rest of the tournament, while Marcus Thuram and Thomas Lemar are also nursing injuries.

The Czechs showed against England the other night that they are no mugs, superb energy levels and pace on the counter ...Netherlands finding out the hard way. Didnt have enough quality in the first half and the red made it almost impossible.

Wow what a performance by the Czechs.

Netherlands sluggish and below par and made to pay for it.

Czechs now play Denmark in the quarter-finals.

The Netherlands are out! Out of the tournament already. Who would've thought? An early surprise in the Round of 16. The red card of course made it an 11 versus 10 affair and, from that point, the Dutch team were completely on the back foot. From there onwards, they could never quite regain the early momentum that they showed initially.

Well played, Czech Republic! A deserved victory!

Tuesday's game will be a cracker. However, I dont see England is beating Germany.

The Czech Republic pulled off the shock of the European Championship so far by defeating the Netherlands (0-2) and booking their place in the last eight after defender Matthijs de Ligt was sent off.

Tomas Holes nodded in the opener 13 minutes after De Ligt saw red for handball following a VAR review, denying Patrik Schick a clear goalscoring opportunity.

Holes then turned provider for Schick as the Czechs doubled their lead on 80 minutes.

The Netherlands, down to 10 men for over half an hour, had a huge chance earlier on as Donyell Malen raced through one-on-one with goalkeeper Tomas Vaclik.

But the Czech Republic, ranked 40th in the world, 24 places behind the Dutch, went on to silence those in orange at the Puskas Arena in Budapest, setting up a quarter-final with Denmark on Saturday, 3 July.

Red card proves costly for vulnerable Dutch

The Netherlands have shown attacking intent throughout the tournament and that did not change in Budapest as wing-backs Denzel Dumfries and Patrick van Aanholt caused problems early on.

Dumfries was their main threat, getting in behind at one point on the left and flicking it over the keeper but unable to beat the last defender.

Memphis Depay was heavily involved too, while Malen got into some dangerous positions.

But while the Netherlands caused problems out wide, so did the Czech Republic, as Vladimir Coufal exploited space in behind left by the roaming Van Aanholt.

Both teams looked susceptible in defence but when De Ligt tripped and pulled the ball back with his hand in the second half, it left referee Sergey Karasev with no choice but to overturn his original decision to show just a yellow card.

And then the Netherlands were on the back foot.

Dumfries made a goal-saving block to deny Pavel Kaderabek but Holes punished the Dutch minutes later, finishing off a knock-back from Tomas Kalas on a corner.

Schick's fourth goal of the tournament finished it off after the Netherlands had pushed for an equaliser - only Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo has more goals than the Czech forward so far.

They travel to Azerbaijan to take on Denmark next, who they beat 3-0 in the quarter-finals of Euro 2004.

Belgium not at their best so far with Portugal catching them on the counter-attack.

De Bruyne and Eden Hazard very quiet at the moment

What a goal by Thorgan Hazard. Much needed lift for Belgium.

1-0

Even Ronaldo is very quiet...standing like a statue and not giving much effort.

End to end in the second half but Belgium go through 1-0

Two very good sides, probably not at their best tonight.

Belgium to play Italy next.

A moment of class from Thorgan Hazard proved enough to knock out holders Portugal as Belgium continued their pursuit of a first major title by reaching the quarter-finals of Euro 2020.

The Borussia Dortmund winger's swerving drive from 25 yards arrived late in a cagey first-half and proved enough for Roberto Martinez's side to set up a mouth-watering meeting with Italy on Friday.

Portugal - who again only introduced Manchester United's Bruno Fernandes from the bench - will look back on key Diogo Jota chances, a Ruben Dias header that was saved and a late Raphael Guerreiro drive that struck the post.

Kevin De Bruyne's fitness may dominate headlines in the build-up to the Italy showdown in Munich after he limped off moments after half-time, and Belgium also lost Eden Hazard to a complaint late on.

The world's highest-ranked side may have key holes to fill but again they have showed they possess the grit to complement their undoubted quality.

Portugal didn´t necessarily play bad, but things are sometimes just not meant to be. There was a sequence in the 58th minute which contained a very sharp piece of play by Ronaldo where he single-handedly arranged a chance for his team-mate, but not to be..... Feel sad for them. Both the teams were overall pretty good at defence, I felt. Portugal just needed a little more luck.

I wouldn´t lay the blame for yesterday´s defeat on Ronaldo´s shoulders. It´s a team game after all and you need support from others.

Spain 2 - 1 up against Croatia and looking really good.

Improving game by game Spain.

Eden Hazard and Kevin de Bruyne will stay with Belgium's Euro 2020 squad, but neither is expected to be "100%" fit for Friday's quarter-final against Italy.

Both players came off in Sunday's 1-0 last-16 win over Portugal.

Midfielder De Bruyne suffered an ankle injury while captain Hazard limped off with a leg muscle problem.

The pair have had scans and boss Roberto Martinez said they could still play a part against Italy in Munich.

"They didn't take any major damage and stay with the team," said Martinez.

"Our main concern at the moment is time, as the match against Italy is coming up quickly. Kevin and Eden probably won't get 100% fit, but we will use every day to get them as fit as possible.

"In the event that we go through, they will be ready for the semi-final anyway."

Belgium have lost one player, though, with second-choice goalkeeper Simon Mignolet suffering a knee injury and being replaced with the uncapped Thomas Kaminski.

What a match, what a comeback by Croatia 3-3.

Spain looking shaky at the back.

Morata with a super goal to give Spain the lead in extra-time, first touch and strike with the left foot reminiscent of Raul.

Easily the best game of the tournament.

Spain go through 5-3. Both defences all over the place.

What a match! Match of the tournament, easily. Everyone will remember the unbelievable mistake by the Spanish goal-keeper, something which I too would term as probably the worst own-goal ever that I've seen, but we must commend him for making a great comeback into the game, after a shock of such an extreme nature, as his two to three saves in the end probably saved Spain. They've now scored 10 goals in two games. Wow!

Again, a great match! Fully enjoyed it!

Spain reached the quarter-finals of Euro 2020 in dramatic fashion by beating Croatia in extra time after an eight-goal thriller.

Luis Enrique's side were rocked when Croatia substitutes Mislav Orsic and Mario Pasalic scored twice in the final five minutes to come back from 3-1 down and force extra time, but Spain rallied as the added 30 minutes produced yet more drama.

Striker Alvaro Morata, who has revealed his family had been threatened during the tournament, silenced his critics when he thumped in Spain's fourth goal in extra time in Copenhagen.

The scoring did not end there as Mikel Oyarzabal added a fifth goal three minutes later to finally see off Croatia, who had fought bravely in this highly entertaining last-16 tie.

In a hint of what was to come, goalkeeper Unai Simon failed to control Pedri's 49-yard back pass, presenting Croatia with the lead after 20 minutes.

That bizarre own goal sparked a response from Spain though, with Pablo Sarabia thumping in an equaliser, Cesar Azpilicueta heading in another and Ferran Torres making it 3-1.

Spain looked comfortable and poised to cruise through but Croatia burst into action through their substitutes late on to force added time.

The thrilling moments continued as Simon made up for his earlier error with a heroic stop from close range to deny Andrej Kramaric before Morata went up the other end to crucially put Spain ahead again.

It was the most entertaining match of the tournament so far and three-time champions Spain will face the winner of France and Switzerland (kick-off 20:00 BST) in the quarter-finals.

LOL France was taking Switzerland lightly and now on the verge of getting eliminated :))

I spoke too soon....France now equalize the goal. Switzerland will repent that missed penalty.

Warning to the other teams - The real France have arrived!

2-1

What a game...what a come back by Switzerland. 3-3 and we are off to extra time.

France crash out.

Mbappe misses his penalty - what a poor tournament he has had.

The Swiss go on to play Spain.

Drab extra time..France never looked like pushing for the winner, shouldnt have allowed the game to go for the penalties.

Well deserved for the Swiss. Another big gun gone

France were hit and miss this tournament.

Some very poor performances from the big names in the squad.

Only seemed to play well for about 20 minutes in the tournament.

Probably the craziest night of football for me till now.

2 unbelievable matches

France knocked out !! Mbappe missing the only penalty in a perfect shootout. Dayummmm well done Switzerland!!

Spain were past their prime according to many and they just smashed 5 goals in back to back games lol

Bye bye France. This makes things easier for Spain.

French team came across as a bit arrogant and overconfident. Before the final whistle was blown both Benzema and Griezman were sitting on the bench. Their Goalie Louis also didn’t seem very good and confidant and Mbape seemed a bit disinterested to come out of the 3rd gear in that half hearted penalty.

Well done to Swiss in playing as a proper team. Though its a pity that the tournament will be less interesting without France.

France were hit and miss this tournament.

This did not age well.

Surly this isnt the real France :)))

To be fair to Saj bhai, who has been contributing to Football threads since so long, there was a point in 2nd half it seemed like France could well post like 5-6 goals in no time.

Pogba was phenomenal and created so many chances.

Conan came close to scoring a few stunners.

France played breathtaking football for a 15-20 minutes but couldn't capitalize on all the opportunities created.

Poor defending all around though as Swiss also missed a few great opportunities.

A goal scoring fest

What a crazy day of football, wow! The tournament is truly alive, fellows! The Switzerland-France is one of the greatest matches ever that I´ve watched, as it had an unbelievable amount of twists and turns. First, Switzerland scored the first goal and shocked France, then, from the 55th minute or so to the 75th minute, Switzerland missed a penalty and France landed three blows, two of which came within a space of just two minutes thanks to Benzema. Surely, surely, the match was over, surely, there was no coming back for the Swiss team, but then the great game´s ability to shock and surprise struck again! Switzerland made a comeback with two goals during the dying stages of the game, exactly like how Croatia had done just hours before that, but the difference lay therein that Switzerland, on the other hand, stuck to it and saw themselves through to the penalty shoot-out - with some luck and a brilliant performance by Sommer. It is one of the greatest, if not the best, performances that I´ve ever witnessed by a goal-keeper, and I´m NOT, absolutely not, referring to him having stopped the penalty. No. The brilliance of his performance lies in what he had done in the main part of the game, the 90 minutes and then the Extra Time. France attacked ferociously, tested him to the extremes, but he stood firm and stopped a few kicks which actually came at the speed of a rocket. Well done, Sommer! You deserved it the most!

I really had a time of my life yesternight. It´s the first football tournament of my nieces ever since having gained understanding of the game, and, having been told by me about the thrills that it brings, witnessing a penalty shoot-out had been their greatest wish ever since the tournament has begun, and they got their wish! There was one incredibly funny scene where, during the Extra Time, my niece Imaan almost dived to her left in the room, as if she would assist Sommer with it:)), and my other niece, Neha, was incredibly loud. The roof almost came off over here when Mbappe missed the last penalty - something which I had predicted well before he kicked.

Mbappe getting all this flak for one bad night,

People really have short memory in sports.

Warning to the other teams - The real France have arrived!

2-1

Oops! :msd

Nah´, on a serious note, to be fair, I also thought the same the moment Benzema turned the game on its head, and then Pogba had almost sealed the game - or at least so it seemed.

I think that France took it too lightly when they led by 3-1 and weren´t awake enough in their defence past that point. They tried hard, gave it a good go after Switzerland´s equalizer, but it was too late by then, perhaps, and a penalty shoot-out seemed destined, and they can swing in any direction, of course. I also sensed an atmosphere of overconfidence amongst their players throughout the tournament, but I should refrain from passing judgments merely by seeing things from the TV screen. All seems wrong when a team loses, of course. This game is cruel, sadly.

He´s only 22 and has a long career ahead of him. I hope that he doesn´t let this setback effect him too much, mentally.

Absolutely unbelievable stuff. Cracker of a game.
result aside, a great game, cracker of a game infact.

Feel sorry for France as I really love seeing them play but yesterdays was "the underdog day" in both the matches.

Tbh it was Swiss game and in fact they missed two sitting goals.
It would never have gone to extra time had they converted those eizee goals

Spain has been lackluster in the past few years but not sure I'd call them underdogs even against a good Croatian team.

‘Finding sleep would be difficult’: Kylian Mbappe after penalty nightmare

Switzerland goalkeeper Yann Sommer saved a penalty kick from Kylian Mbappe in a penalty shootout to knock France out of the European Championship

Switzerland’s Yann Sommer saved France striker Kylian Mbappe’s penalty to secure a 5-4 shootout win over the world champions following a thrilling 3-3 draw after extra time on Monday to reach the Euro 2020 quarter-finals where they will meet Spain.

On a memorable evening for Swiss football, the so-called Nati repeatedly beat the odds, coming from 3-1 down with two goals in the final five minutes to force extra time and eventually penalties.

After the nightmarish game for France, Kylian Mbappe issued an apology on his social media accounts after his penalty miss ended France’s hopes of adding Euro 2020 glory to the World Cup crown they won in Russia three years ago.

“The sadness is immense after this elimination, we could not reach our goal,” he wrote.

You don't support Germany Rawal?
I do. I'm anxiously waiting for our today's match against England.

It's just that I pick a team for every match, mostly the lesser of the two teams, and support them with almost the same amount of passion as I would have for Germany, for example. I try to enjoy sports to the fullest, although nothing comes above Germany in football for me, nothing.

Grealish on for England.

Tight match so far, still 0-0

Germany marginally better in the second half than they were in the first.

Both sides huffing and puffing now, typical in a knockout match when both managers aren't willing to take the extra risk lest their side is eliminated. Needs a scrappy goal (or a worldie) to settle this.

2-0 now with Kane scoring, game over.

Thomas Muller missed a one-on-one against the keeper a few minutes ago, massive moment in the match.

2-0 to England. The better side on the day won.

England now face the winners of Sweden and Ukraine.

I thought Germany, however poor they are atm, would beat England because England freeze against them and Southgate is too defensive but they won and won well.

All the big boys from Group F crash out of the tournament at the last 16 stage - France, Portugal and Germany.

As well as them, Netherlands gone too.

People tend to underrate England on this forum, they are one of the best teams in the tournament and deserve to get to semis at least.
