The Euro 2020 Tournament (11 June to 11 July)

Morata showing why he iis the biggest choker in Spain's history. They really need to get a better striker in the future if they want to return back to glory days.

It was fun to watch the way Spain gave it all in the last 10 to 15 minutes, but they were, throughout, missing out on the finishing touch, a good finish. Just weren´t able to get the ball in there. Overall, though, they were poor, pretty poor. The biggest chance of the game, though, was created by Sweden. The ball hit the pole! Also, credit to the Spanish defender who came in two prevent a certain goal.

I had gone to the other room as, in that time of hardly a minute, Czech Republic scored their second goal. My mother called me back to the room. Just saw it in the highlights. Awesome, plain awesome stuff by Patrick Schick. Wow, what a goal! An absolute devil´s mind!

Not at their best Portugal but 3 late goals sees them beat Hungary.

A lot of quality in this Portuguese squad and they should be there amongst the top contenders in this tournament.

Quiet match for Ronaldo but still scored 2 goals.

Cristiano Ronaldo became the top scorer in men's European Championship history as Portugal beat Hungary in front of more than 60,000 fans in Budapest.

Ronaldo converted an 87th-minute penalty for his 10th goal in the competition, overtaking France's Michel Platini on nine goals.

His 11th came only a few minutes later when he took the ball around goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi for Portugal's third.

Hungary had looked on course for an unlikely draw until they conceded three goals late on.

The deadlock was broken in the 84th minute when Raphael Guerreiro's shot with the outside of the foot took a massive deflection off defender Willi Orban to break Hungary's brave resistance.

France 1 0 up against Germany.

Brilliant match so far.

The French are so good to watch.

Hard-fought win for France.

Not at their best, but job done.

World champions France started their Euro 2020 campaign with a win over Germany thanks to a Mats Hummels' own goal in a high-quality heavyweight Group F match.

Hummels - recalled for this tournament after being told by coach Joachim Low in 2019 that his international career was over - diverted Lucas Hernandez's cross into his own net in the first half of a fascinating contest in Munich.

Tournament favourites France were marginally the better of the two sides, but appeared to be in third gear for much of it.

Paul Pogba sent the ball over the bar from a corner with his shoulder, Kylian Mbappe had an angled shot saved, he and Karim Benzema had goals ruled out for offside and Adrian Rabiot hit the outside of the post.

Germany came into the finals with big questions over their best XI as well as their chances of success after an uncharacteristically turbulent few years, but proved typically competitive finals opponents.

Thomas Muller - another player recalled after being jettisoned by Low - headed wide, with Ilkay Gundogan slicing an effort past the post from a good position in the box and Serge Gnabry seeing a shot deflected on to the roof of the net.

It was not just the actual football that was of interest either.

There was a hint that Germany defender Antonio Rudiger may have bitten the shoulder of Pogba in the first half, although replays proved inconclusive.

This came after a Greenpeace protestor had parachuted into the stadium, shedding equipment as he crashed to the pitch before being hurried away by security.

France's win means they and Portugal, who beat Hungary 3-0 in Budapest earlier on Tuesday, take the early initiative in a highly competitive Group F.

France look dangerous even when there not at there very best. Will take some effort to stop them

I am german supporter and am quite disappointed by today’s performance. Germany lacks a potent striker like Klose, Bierhoff..also in middle field we are not too creative (no replacement for Ozel). Kroos is misfiring from all cylinders and wasting valuable Free kicks. In defence there is no Boetang anymore.

Germany should ve replaced the coach Jocham Loew after last WC disaster performance. It seems like he has wasted 3 years and could not rebuild a proper Mannschaft.

Paul Pogba has claimed Antonio Rudiger "nibbled" him during France's Euro 2020 win against Germany but does not want the defender to be banned over the incident.

The Manchester United midfielder reacted angrily after Rudiger was caught on camera putting his face close to Pogba's back before reaching his arms around the Frenchman's chest.

Pogba appeared to suggest to the referee that Rudiger had bitten him after the clash between the two players towards the end of the first half in Munich.

First match: Hungary fought hard, really hard, but a few mistakes during the last 10 minutes of the match saw them lose by a huge margin of 3-0 in the end. Soccer is a cruel, cruel, game, mind you. Still, they fought well.

Second match: I´m not sure what to make of Germany´s 1-0 defeat. Were France throughout the better team? Yes? Was Germany´s defeat undeserved? No. Would it have stood as a 0-0 draw had it not been for the own-goal by Hummels? Yes, yes! Also, one thing what I noticed was, whenever France launched an attack, they launched a heavy attack with full power and strength, but Germany´s attacks, on the other hand, were half-hearted and not too well executed. Also, two of France´s goals weren´t given due to off-sides, but let´s not discuss that much because they don´t count, but France´s offensive skills were fully on display on both occasions.

Also, hugely impressed by France´s defence, which wasn´t as strong even when they won the World Cup three years ago, but I would like to see how it fares against teams stronger than Germany.

Also, Mbappe´s speed is awesome, plain awesome! He runs like a ball rolled on a sheet.

Paul Pogba removed a bottle of Heineken beer that had been placed in front of him at a Euro 2020 news conference on Tuesday, a day after Cristiano Ronaldo moved aside Coca-Cola bottles in a similar set-up.

France midfielder Pogba, a practising Muslim, removed the bottle - which happened to be a non-alcoholic version - when he spoke to the media after he was named man of the match in France's 1-0 Group F win over Germany in Munich.

On Monday, Portugal captain Ronaldo removed two bottles of Coca-Cola at a pre-match news conference and said "agua" in Portuguese, appearing to encourage people to drink that instead.

Sky Sports News has requested comment from Heineken and Coca-Cola, who are both official sponsors of Euro 2020.

Coca-Cola's share price dropped from $56.10 to $55.22 almost immediately after Ronaldo's gesture, a 1.6% dip. The market value of Coca-Cola went from $242bn to $238bn - a drop of $4bn.

However, after the initial slump, Coca-Cola's share price bounced back again fairly quickly.

Germans are lacking a proper striker and I don’t think will go much far in the tournament.

Russia secured their first win of Euro 2020 with a hard-fought (0-1) victory over Finland in St Petersburg.

Aleksey Miranchuk put the hosts ahead in first-half injury time with a fine, curling finish, despite being surrounded by defenders.

Finland would have qualified for the last 16 with a win and thought they had opened the scoring, but Joel Pohjanpalo's header was ruled out for offside.

The result leaves both sides on three points before their final Group B matches on Monday.

Finland, competing in their first major finals, won 1-0 against Denmark on Saturday in a match overshadowed by Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen collapsing on the pitch.

Before Wednesday's game, all the Finnish squad wore T-shirts saying 'Get well Christian'.

Eriksen is currently recovering in hospital after suffering cardiac arrest.

All the Finland squad members wore T-shirts saying 'Get well Christian' as a gesture of support for Denmark's Christian Eriksen
Pohjanpalo scored the only goal in Finland's opener and thought he had his second goal of the tournament when he got between two Russian defenders to head in following Jukka Raitala's excellent cross inside three minutes.

However, with the help of the video assistant referee, Pohjanpalo was ruled to be marginally offside and the goal was disallowed.

Russia then had the best chances but Magomed Ozdoev headed over and put another opportunity wide, and only superb defending from Jere Uronen denied substitute Viacheslav Karavaev.

But the hosts got a deserved goal when Miranchuk, surrounded by four visiting defenders, managed to shift the ball onto his left foot and curl an effort past Lukas Hradecky.

Norwich City striker Teemu Pukki had a rare chance for Finland in the second half but could only shoot tamely at Russia goalkeeper Matvey Safonov.

The hosts continued to look the more likely of the two sides to score, but Aleksandr Golovin and Rifat Zhemaletdinov both narrowly missed the target and Daler Kuzyayev had a shot saved.

Uefa has contacted the French Football Federation to find out why France's Benjamin Pavard carried on playing against Germany at Euro 2020 despite losing consciousness briefly.

The Bayern Munich defender, 25, collided with Germany's Robin Gosens in the second half of France's 1-0 win.

Pavard said: "I took a hell of a shock. I was a little knocked out for 10 to 15 seconds. After that it was better."

Uefa wants to know what happened and whether protocols were followed.

Prior to Euro 2020, all teams, including doctors, agreed to a concussion charter stating: "We confirm that if a player of our team is suspected of having suffered a concussion, he will be immediately removed from the pitch, whether in training or match play."

Global players' union Fifpro said it was in touch with Uefa "to find out why the concussion charter was not applied".

Brain charity Headway says the handling of the incident was "sickening to watch" and called on Uefa to "immediately explain how it was allowed to happen and what action it will take to ensure something similar does not occur in the future".

Fifpro has called for football to use temporary concussion substitutes so that players can be replaced while they are being assessed for head injuries.

Trials for concussion substitutes, which do not allow a player to be replaced while they are being assessed but offer additional permanent replacements, have taken place this season in England and other countries.

But Uefa is not carrying out a trial during the European Championship, having used it in a recent under-21 tournament.

Questions about player welfare have increased after Christian Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest during Denmark's opening game against Finland on Saturday.

Headway chief executive Peter McCabe added: "This is another example of football authorities failing to protect the short and long-term health of a player.

"It was plain for all to see that Pavard was unable to protect himself from the fall. Pavard's later statement that he lost consciousness confirms the seriousness of the incident.

"We have continuously been told that football's concussion protocols are fit for purpose and that temporary concussion substitutes are not necessary.

"But here we have yet another example where it is simply not credible to suggest that a concussion could not be 'suspected' or a possible consequence of the impact."

HALF-TIME - Turkey 0-1 Wales

What a fantastic performance so far from Wales.

Gareth Bale's incredible pass and Aaron Ramsey's fine finish put Wales ahead and Ramsey could on another day have a hat-trick.

Turkey 0 - 2 Wales

Good win for Wales, they have a good chance of qualifying now.

Very dissapointed with Turkey, they have been very poor both games, deserve to be knocked out early.

Really disappointed with Turkey in this tournament.

No creativity or flair or pace.

Wales took a significant stride towards qualifying for the second round of Euro 2020 as they overcame Turkey after a gripping encounter in Baku.

With a crowd of more than 30,000 in Azerbaijan's capital city effectively making this a home game for Turkey, Wales responded to the hostile atmosphere with a vibrant, attacking display in which they cut their opponents open at will.

After a host of missed chances in a breathless first half, Gareth Bale played a brilliant lofted pass through the heart of the Turkish defence for Aaron Ramsey, who brought the ball down and finished elegantly.

Although Turkey came back strongly, Wales squandered a glorious opportunity to consolidate their lead when captain Bale ballooned a penalty over the bar.

There were some nervous moments for the Welsh defence as they withstood Turkish attacks - with Danny Ward making a vital late save to deny Merih Demiral.

But Connor Roberts struck from a corner deep in injury time to seal a win that takes Wales to four points with one match left in the group stage.

That final fixture will be in Rome on Sunday against Group A favourites Italy, who face Switzerland later on Wednesday.

Yes, Turkey have been disappointing, they have a decent team, but very poor tactically.

Italy 1-0 Switzerland

Actually expected that to be 2-0 by now but seems Swiss are not walkovers!

Italy showing some class so far.

2-0 up now.

Italy are a different team to previous years, they play a much more fluent type of football, with more flair & at a greater pace. But still havent lost their solid defensive play. Their record in the last couple of years is the best in the world. Having one of the best keepers in the world also helps.

It will be tough for any team to beat Italy, favourites along with France now imo.

3 0 Italy.

Lovely to watch them in the 2 games they've played so far. A lot of energy and pace in this side.

Through to the last 16.

Italy look good, however they will need to be tested by stronger attacking teams, before coming to a conclusion on them.

In-form Italy became the first team to reach the knockout stage of the European Championship with another impressive Group A showing in victory over Switzerland.

Roberto Mancini's side thumped Turkey on the opening day of the tournament and made it back-to-back 3-0 wins courtesy of another sprightly performance in Rome.

Sassuolo midfielder Manuel Locatelli scored twice, first by finishing off a move he started by tapping in from Domenico Berardi's darting run and cutback.

Italy's passing and pressing was far superior to their opponents and Locatelli's fizzing strike from the edge of the area underlined their control of the contest.

Lazio striker Ciro Immobile's long-range drive, which squirmed under goalkeeper Yann Sommer, completed a comprehensive victory late on.

Switzerland barely threatened an Italian backline that has now gone 10 games without conceding in all competitions, a run approaching 1,000 minutes.

Russia kept getting better as the game went on, although I was expecting Finland to win.

Italy have massively upped their game for this tournament. Two games, a total scoreline of 6-0. Can we please have a match between them and France, please? That would be a cracker!

If Germany aren´t going to make it through, which obviously does seem most, most, likely, then I´m most desirous of such a final. So, yeah, a yes all the way!

Ukraine bounced back from their opening defeat at Euro 2020 as they held on to beat tournament debutants North Macedonia in an entertaining encounter in Bucharest.

Having fought back from two goals down before ultimately losing 3-2 to the Netherlands on Sunday, Andriy Shevchenko's side ended a run of six successive European Championship defeats to remain in contention in Group C.

Captain Andriy Yarmolenko capitalised on poor defending from a corner after 28 minutes, before the West Ham forward's pass set up Roman Yaremchuk, who slotted neatly into the bottom corner five minutes later.

Leeds United's Ezgjan Alioski followed up his own saved penalty to hand a much-improved North Macedonia a second-half lifeline, but they could not find an equaliser despite goalkeeper Stole Dimitrievski saving Ruslan Malinovskiy's penalty in the closing stages.

Denmark go 1-0 up against Belgium inside 2 minutes in the first game since the Eriksen collapse! The roof in Copenhagen was absolutely blown off! Incredible scenes.

Wave after wave of attack in these first few minutes. Denmark are fired up and Belgium don't know what's hit them!

Teams at Euro 2020 could face fines if their players move drinks provided by sponsors at news conferences, as Cristiano Ronaldo and Paul Pogba have done in recent days.

On Monday, Portugal captain Ronaldo removed two bottles of Coca-Cola and encouraged people to drink water.

The next day, France midfielder Pogba, a practising Muslim, discreetly removed a bottle of Heineken beer.

Italy's Manuel Locatelli also replaced Coca-Cola with water on Wednesday.

"Uefa has reminded participating teams that partnerships are integral to the delivery of the tournament and to ensuring the development of football across Europe, including for youth and women," tournament organisers said on Thursday.

Uefa's Euro 2020 tournament director Martin Kallen said players were contractually obliged "through their federation of the tournament regulations to follow".

However, he said he understood the actions of players who, like Pogba, did such things for religious reasons.

Team have been reminded of their contractual regulations and Kallen said disciplinary action was "a possibility".

Uefa does not intend to directly fine players and any sanctions are at the discretion of the national federations.

"We are never fining players directly from the Uefa side, we will do this always through the participating national association and then they could look if they will go further to the player, but we are not going directly for the moment to the player," Kallen said.

"We have the regulations signed by the participating federations."

A good comeback by Belgium. At one stage, they looked done for the day, but a commendable comeback by them, I must admit.

However, kudos to Denmark for giving quite a tough fight to a team levels above them. It could still have been a 2-2 draw had the ball not hit the upper pole towards the end there. They looked on and quite committed to the cause. It clearly seemed as if they wanted to do this for Eriksen. It was just not to be, sadly.....

Kevin de Bruyne inspired Belgium to a comeback win against Denmark that secured their place in the last 16 of Euro 2020 as fans and players paid tribute to Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen, who is recovering after suffering cardiac arrest.

Eriksen is in hospital after he collapsed on the pitch at the Parken Stadium during Saturday's game against Finland.

Tributes were paid to Denmark's talismanic number 10 before and during the game, with play stopped in the 10th minute as players, officials and supporters joined together for a minute's applause.

That came after Yussuf Poulsen gave the hosts a dream start just one minute and 39 seconds into the game, slotting in after a mistake in the Belgium defence.

De Bruyne was sent on at the start of the second half and the Manchester City midfielder changed the game.

He played a part in the equaliser, receiving a pass from Romelu Lukaku before superbly finding Thorgan Hazard to fire home, and then drove in the winner with 20 minutes remaining after a brilliant move started by Lukaku.

Martin Braithwaite went close to a late equaliser for Denmark but his header skimmed the top of the bar.

Victory means Belgium are top of Group B with six points from two games while Denmark are bottom of the standings with zero points.

I thought Denmark played well today against Belgium.

Belgium looked a lot better when De Bruyne came on, but throughout the match they looked shaky at the back.

There'll be teams in this tournament who will take a look at the Belgium defence and fancy their chances against them.

The Netherlands booked their spot in last 16 at Euro 2020 as they saw off Austria 2-0 in Amsterdam to win Group C with a game to spare.

Frank de Boer's side, who beat Ukraine in their opening fixture, look to be hitting their stride as they outclassed the visitors in front of 12,000 fans at the Johan Cruyff Arena.

Talisman Memphis Depay put the hosts ahead from the spot after David Alaba brought down flying wing-back Denzel Dumfries, who capped a fine performance by adding the second from a swift break in the second half.

The Dutch, who failed to qualify for the past two major tournaments, are into the knockout stages at the European Championship for the first time since 2008.

Austria started their campaign with victory over North Macedonia and their progression will be decided in the final group match against Ukraine.

De Boer came in for some criticism for using a 5-3-2 formation in the build-up but stuck with it after an entertaining 3-2 opening win against Ukraine.

He was rewarded as the Netherlands secured a place in the knockout stages at their first major tournament since reaching the semi-finals of the 2014 World Cup.

The marauding Dumfries has been one of the biggest beneficiaries of the system, playing more like a right forward, and it was the PSV Eindhoven defender who was caught in the box 10 minutes in, with the penalty given after the video assistant referee intervened.

That allowed Depay to stroke the hosts ahead with his 27th goal at international level - eight of those have come since De Boer took charge in September and he has been involved in 27 goals in the past 22 games for his country.

The Lyon forward had earlier missed a glorious chance to add to his tally, but started the move for the Netherlands' second when he sent Donyell Malen free for the substitute to unselfishly square the ball and give Dumfries a tap-in for his second of the tournament.

Matthijs de Ligt's return from a groin injury firmed up what looked a shaky Dutch backline in the opening game and Austria failed to trouble the hosts until the final 10 minutes, with Alaba firing narrowly wide.

The Netherlands will await the third-placed finisher from either Group D, E or F in the next round.

I quite like the Netherlands play, there´s a certain amount of joy watching them play. Here´s hoping that they go long in the tournament.

Sweden 0-0 Slovakia

Boring game it seems!

Sweden moved to the top of Group E following a 1-0 victory over Slovakia in St. Petersburg, courtesy of Emil Forsberg’s penalty

It was a pretty cold game, quite boring, especially the first half. It would've been a 0-0 draw had it not been for the penalty. I expected better from Sweden, a lot better than this.

Emil Forsberg's second-half penalty ensured Sweden took a huge step towards qualifying for the last 16 at Euro 2020 with victory against Slovakia in St Petersburg.

RB Leipzig's Forsberg slotted in with 13 minutes remaining after substitute Robin Quaison was hauled down by goalkeeper Martin Dubravka.

The spot-kick ended a run of 365 minutes without a goal for Sweden at the European Championship, since their opening group game at Euro 2016.

While Slovakia could have secured their progress to the knockout stages with a win, Sweden now lead Group E with four points - one more than Slovakia who face Spain in their final match.

HT: #CRO 0-1 #CZE

Czech Republic lead at the break after Patrik Schick scored from the penalty spot.

That was quite a good goal by Perisic. Just about keeps Croatia alive in the tournament.

Also, why did the referee whistle when there were clearly about 20 seconds to go of the Additional Time? Made little sense. I don´t think that I´ve ever seen this before. Croatia had the ball in possession, from what I saw, and were close to being in Czech Republic´s penalty area.

Croatia 1-1 Czech Republic

Fair result?

The Czech Republic took a huge step towards qualifying for the last 16 at Euro 2020 with an entertaining draw against Croatia at Hampden Park.

The Czechs opened the scoring through a controversial first-half Patrik Schick penalty, after referee Carlos del Cerro Grande checked the pitchside monitor and awarded the spot-kick for a Dejan Lovren foul on striker Schick.

Lovren, who missed Croatia's opening-game defeat by England with a knee ligament injury, caught Schick's nose with his elbow when the pair jumped to contest a corner.

Bayer Leverkusen forward Schick sent goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic the wrong way, finding the bottom left corner to become the first player to score three times in their first two European Championship appearances since Mario Mandzukic in 2012.

Croatia looked for an immediate response, but Ante Rebic blasted an effort high and wide from 10 yards out.

But Zlatko Dalic's side sprung into life in the second half, with Ivan Perisic equalising two minutes after the restart with a fine individual effort.

A quickly taken Andrej Kramaric free-kick released Perisic down the left wing, before he burst into the box, cut inside Vladimir Coufal and fired past Tomas Vaclik.

HALF-TIME
England 0-0 Scotland

A goalless first half but it has been intriguing.

England and Scotland played out a goalless draw at Wembley to leave both countries with their hopes of reaching Euro 2020's knockout stage very much alive.

The first meeting between the men's teams in a major tournament since Euro 96 was played out in a typically raucous atmosphere despite only 22,500 fans in attendance - and both sides had big opportunities to win.

Most of the honours must go to Scotland, however, who bounced back from their opening defeat to the Czech Republic at Hampden Park with real resilience and character to fully deserve this important point.

It was The Tartan Army who were elated at the final whistle while England's players heard the sound of loud jeering from their supporters.

England, who were sluggish and disappointing, should have taken the lead early on when John Stones headed Mason Mount's corner against the woodwork.

As Scotland settled and improved, England were grateful to Jordan Pickford's superb save from Stephen O'Donnell and a goal-line clearance from Reece James to divert Lyndon Dykes' goal-bound shot after the break.

Gareth Southgate's side, with a win over Croatia in the bag, now have a chance to overtake the Czech Republic and win Group D in their final game while Scotland will chase victory against Croatia at Hampden Park.

Really poor from England.

No creativity, no energy.

Scotland should have won that match.

England has a nervous and clueless squad. They were just running around like headless chickens.

Also after the match Harry Kane was interviewed and he had this guilty and clueless expression on his face and in the body language. I think there is just too much pressure on the English team and too less actual talent.

The sooner its over for these guys, the sooner they (and their supporters) are out of their misery.

England look out of sorts and Italy looks more like it now.

Well done, Scotland! A well and hard earned draw. Never let England dominate even for a period of five minutes. They looked most satisfied with a draw, and why wouldn´t they be? Nobody expected them to go home with a draw, of course.

Poor England. Their political history is such that every country arrives on the field with the firm resolve to give it their all and not to lose against them. Other teams always have this to motivate them, and it lands England on the back-foot, on the other hand, always having to play a game which runs much deeper in significance - regardless of whether it´s soccer or even cricket.

The problem with this English team is that they runs out of steam too soon, often by half an hour or so, as the rest of the match it seems as if they´re merely going through the motions. They must work on that.

What a match so far! Great atmosphere, great crowd support, a total moment of madness, that goal! We seem in for some fun here. France are not going to let this slip away too easily!

Fasten your seatbelts, I'd say!

Antoine Griezmann rescued a point for France and denied Hungary one of the big European Championship shocks in front of a raucous 60,000 crowd in Budapest.

Attila Fiola fired Hungary into the lead just before the break as he held off the French defence to slot home after a one-two with Roland Sallai.

The goal was met by one of the loudest celebrations football has heard since March 2020 - or even before then - as the Puskas Arena went wild.

Fiola banged a pitchside reporter's table and knocked items off before he and his team-mates embraced some of the fans in the front row.

World champions France, tipped by many as the tournament favourites, had dominated the first half, with Kylian Mbappe in lively form again, before that goal.

Les Bleus were not impressive, although they did come back in the second half.

First, substitute Ousmane Dembele hit the post - and then his Barcelona team-mate Griezmann equalised.

Mbappe ran onto Hugo Lloris' huge kick down the field before laying it off - with the aid of a slight deflection - for Griezmann to slot home from eight yards.

Lacklustre France.

Well below par, with most of their big-names not performing today.

Brilliant effort though from Hungary.

The Euro 2020 Tournament (11 June to 11 July)The Euro 2020 Tournament (11 June to 11 July)

A 1-1 draw it is! The Hungarian spirit has seen the team through! The best match of the tournament, easily, and this purely down to atmosphere created by the crowd.

That goal, and especially the celebration that followed in which the Hungarian player shocked that woman outside the playing area, is truly the best moment of the tournament so far. Pure gold! :))

Portugal 2-4 Germany

Germany come from behind to stun defending champions Portugal, leaving Group F wide open.

Germany got off the mark in style at Euro 2020 as they tore Portugal apart with an impressive attacking performance in Munich to throw Group F wide open.

Germany's win means both these sides now sit on three points, one behind group leaders France, heading into a pivotal final round of fixtures on Wednesday.

Atalanta wing-back Robin Gosens was the architect with a goal and an assist, earning an ovation from the Allianz Arena crowd as he was replaced just after the hour mark.

Cristiano Ronaldo had put the visitors ahead, continuing his record-breaking campaign with his third goal of the tournament and 12th European Championship strike of all time.

But two own goals in the space of five first-half minutes flipped an entertaining encounter in Germany's favour, as first Ruben Dias and then Raphael Guerreiro turned into their own net.

The influential Gosens laid on a third immediately after the break with an inviting ball that allowed Kai Havertz to tap in from close range, before heading in Germany's fourth himself.

Diogo Jota poked in from Ronaldo's cutback but the defending champions were unable to mount a comeback.

Germany host Hungary, who earlier on Saturday held France to a draw, while Portugal face the world champions in the final game with all four nations still able to progress.

Germany boss Joachim Low told his side to be "more vigorous" in attack after their opening 1-0 defeat by France and saw that call answered as his side clicked into gear on home soil.

Gosens had already an effort disallowed for offside as Low's outfit took control before they were stunned by a ruthless Portugal counter attack from their own corner.

Die Mannschaft have not lost successive games in the group stage of a major tournament since defeats by England and Portugal at Euro 2000, when they finished bottom of the group, and two goals before half-time made sure that would not happen 21 years on.

First Portugal centre-back Dias turned Gosens' fizzed cross into his own net and moments later Guerreiro did the same as opposite wing-back Joshua Kimmich cut the ball back into a dangerous area.

There have been question marks over the deployment of Kimmich in that role, rather than in central midfield, but Low stuck with team beaten by France and it was from wide that the Bayern Munich man and Gosens on the opposite flank caused problems.

Gosens set up Havertz for the third in another swift attack and then got on the end of a Kimmich cross to cap a superb performance.

This tournament will be the last of Low's 15-year reign in charge, with Germany keeping faith in the 61-year-old after his side failed to reach the knockout stage at the World Cup in 2018.

They had did not look completely convincing in defence and had to hold out after Jota pulled a goal back, but are now well placed to reach the last 16.

That Hungary draw has thrown this group open.

France vs Portugal will be tasty considering France would want to finish top (and avoid a potential clash with England) and also knock a challenger in Portugal out

Well done, Germany! That's how you play soccer! A proud performance!

Now, if I may add to distract from the celebrations, Hungary should not be taken lightly in the next match. They need to continue to be on their toes!

They wont necessarily knock Portugal out, the best 4 third placed teams still go through so providing Portugal don’t lose badly they would qualify potentially as their GD is already decent

It was very heartbreaking when Portugal scored the first goal of the match when it was clearly Germany who were playing the better game. However, well done to the boys for a swift comeback into the match. It would've been nice, however, had we won it by 4-1, as that would've increased the chances of qualifying for the next round, in case it's a draw against Hungary. But, but, I'll happily just take the win for now!

In the last 10 years, Germany has been by far the most fascinating football team out there. They took the Spanish tiki taka model and made it even better.

I don't even think they played that well today but they still came from 0-1 down to smash the opponent 4-2 which seemed like a typical day.

They aee just too shabby defense wise. I call them overconfident , always getting caught in awkward positions during the counter attack. When they sort it out they are a tournament winning calibre team always!!

The talent in their midfield is just incredible. Which team out there can claim to have a better midfield than Germany? I don't think any

Never write Germany off.

Many felt they would struggle in this tournament, but once again they have proved the critics wrong.

That was a brilliant performance from them against Portugal.
