Porto sack coach Vitor Bruno

LISBON: FC Porto announced the dismissal of Vitor Bruno on Monday, becoming the third of Portugal’s three main clubs to make a coaching change this season.

The 42-year-old replaced new AC Milan boss Sergio Conceicao in the close season but paid the price after Porto lost ground in the title race following back-to-back league defeats this month. Porto’s academy director Jose Tavares will take over as coach on an interim basis, the club said.

Sunday’s 3-1 loss away to Gil Vicente was Porto’s third in a row in all competitions. They were also beaten by Sporting Lisbon in the semi-finals of the League Cup on January 7. Porto have slipped to third in the table, four points behind leaders Sporting. Benfica moved into second place over the weekend.

Benfica parted ways with German coach Roger Schmidt at the end of August, while Sporting sacked Ruben Amorim’s successor Joao Pereira just over a month after the former departed for Manchester United.

Borussia Dortmund have sacked head coach Nuri Sahin after their Champions League defeat at Bologna.

The German side have lost four successive matches in all competitions since the winter break.

The 2-1 defeat against the Italian club on Tuesday was their third loss in this season's Champions League for last year's beaten finalists.

It means Dortmund must beat Shakhtar Donetsk in their final league phase game and hope other results go in their favour to automatically reach the last 16.

A run of three domestic defeats to start 2025 has left them 10th in the Bundesliga, seven points outside the top four and in danger of failing to secure Champions League qualification next season.

Sahin, 36, who had two stints at the club as a player, said: "Unfortunately, we have not managed to live up to Borussia Dortmund's sporting ambitions this season.

"I wish this special club all the best."

Sahin was appointed Dortmund boss in June 2024 as a replacement for Edin Terzic, who left following their Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid.

as an assistant coach to Terzic at the start of 2024 alongside Sven Bender.

"We value Nuri Sahin and his work very much. We hoped for a long-term collaboration and until the end we had hoped we could achieve a sporting turnaround together," said Dortmund sporting director Lars Ricken.

"This decision hurts me personally, but it was unavoidable after the game in Bologna."

Lyon boss Fonseca gets nine-month ban for confronting referee

Lyon manager Paulo Fonseca has been suspended from conducting his matchday duties for almost nine months for angrily confronting a referee.

Fonseca, 51, was sent off and pushed his face towards official Benoit Millot during Lyon's 2-1 win over Brest on 2 March.

In a statement on Wednesday, the French Professional Football League said the Portuguese boss would be barred from accessing the bench, the officials' dressing rooms, and carrying out any official functions before, during, or after matches until 30 November

The punishment also prevents him from going to the team dressing room, pitch, tunnel and corridors leading to those areas until 15 September.

Fonseca, who apologised after the incident, only took charge of Lyon on 31 January after leaving AC Milan the previous month.

He was sent off after a review of a potential penalty for Brest - which was not awarded - for his "intimidating attitude", according to Millot.

Barcelona match postponed after death of team doctor

Barcelona's La Liga match against Osasuna on Saturday night has been postponed following the death of the Catalan club's first-team doctor Carles Minarro Garcia.

The game was scheduled to start at 20:00 GMT but was called off around 20 minutes before kick-off.

Fans had had already arrived at Barcelona's Olympic Stadium as Hansi Flick's side prepared to extend their one-point lead at the top of La Liga against their 11th-placed visitors, before news of the postponement was announced on the big screen.

"FC Barcelona is deeply saddened to announce the passing of first-team doctor Carles Minarro Garcia this evening," the club said in a statement.

"For this reason, the match between FC Barcelona and CA Osasuna has been postponed to a later date.

"The FC Barcelona board of directors and all staff extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time."

An Osasuna statement added: "Osasuna wishes to convey its deepest condolences to the family of Dr Carles Minarro Garcia and would like to send a warm hug to all the staff of FC Barcelona, as well as to its fans, at this difficult time. May he rest in peace."

Juventus sack boss Motta and replace him with Tudor

Juventus have sacked manager Thiago Motta after just nine months in charge and replaced him Croatian Igor Tudor.

Former Italy international Motta, 42, departs with the 36-time Serie A champions one point outside the Champions League qualification places in fifth.

His final match in charge was a 3-0 defeat at Fiorentina last weekend, having been thrashed 4-0 at home by Atalanta the previous week.

The Turin club also lost to PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League play-off round and are out of the Coppa Italia, which they won last season.

Former midfielder Tudor made more than 150 appearances for Juventus between 1998 and 2007.

His first managerial job was with Hajduk Split in 2013 and has since taken charge of the likes of Galatasaray, Udinese, Verona and Marseille.

The 46-year-old's most recent role was a three-month spell at Lazio at the end of last season.

Tudor's first game in charge will be a home match against Genoa in Serie A on Saturday.

RB Leipzig sack head coach Rose & appoint Low

RB Leipzig have sacked head coach Marco Rose after their 1-0 Bundesliga defeat by Borussia Monchengladbach and appointed Zsolt Low as interim boss.

Rose, 48, departs after two and a half years with Leipzig who are sixth in the Bundesliga table.

Low, who worked as Thomas Tuchel's assistant manager at Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Paris St-Germain, replaces Rose until the end of the season.

Leipzig have won three of their past 11 Bundesliga games but are only three points below the Champions League qualification places with seven matches remaining.

They also play in the semi-finals of the German Cup on Wednesday against Stuttgart.

Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp currently works for the Red Bull group as their head of global soccer.

Speaking in January, Klopp said "I will not be the coach of a Red Bull team," should an opportunity arise.

Marcel Schafer, Leipzig's managing director for sport, said: "We have believed in our co-operation with Marco and his team for a very long time and, up to now, tried everything to turn things around together.

"Given the development and the continued lack of results, we're all firmly convinced that we need new impetus for the remainder of the campaign in order to achieve our aims for the season."

Barcelona lack finances to register Olmo - La Liga

Barcelona do not have the financial capacity to register forwards Dani Olmo and Pau Victor, La Liga has said.

The Catalans were granted temporary licenses by La Liga to register Olmo and Victor last summer.

But their registrations were then revoked in January by La Liga, who said Barcelona had failed to prove they were compliant with the league's financial rules by their deadline of 31 December.

Spain's sports council (CSD) gave Barcelona permission to temporarily reinstate Olmo and Victor following an appeal, with a definitive ruling on the pair's registrations expected by 7 April.

Barcelona - top of La Liga and in the Champions League quarter-finals - announced a deal on 3 January to sell VIP boxes at the club's Nou Camp stadium, which is being rebuilt, in order to raise 100m euros (£83m).

But La Liga says the deal was not recorded in the accounts submitted by Barcelona to the league last week for the 2024-25 season, and that the deal had been approved by a different, unnamed auditor.

Muller to end 25-year Bayern stay at end of season

Germany great Thomas Muller will end his 25-year association with Bayern Munich at the end of the current season.

The 35-year-old has played the most games in the history of the club with 743, while he is third on their all-time scorer's list with 247 goals.

The attacking midfielder, who also plays as a second striker, came through Bayern's academy to make his senior debut in 2008 and has won two Champions Leagues and 12 Bundesliga titles among 33 trophies in total with the German giants.

"It's been an incredible journey, shaped by unique experiences, great encounters and unforgettable triumphs," said Muller, whose contract ends in June.

"I feel immense gratitude and joy that I got to make this career with my beloved club. The special connection to the club and our fantastic fans will always remain.

"What I want as a farewell should be clear: titles we can celebrate together, and moments we'll remember fondly for a long time. We're going to give our all in the coming weeks to bring the league title back to Munich."

Muller, who scored 45 goals for Germany in 131 appearances, won the Golden Boot at the 2010 World Cup and was part of the Germany team that won the 2014 World Cup.

"I could have easily imagined taking on this role [with Bayern] next year as well," he admitted, while club CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen said: "The most important thing is that we've found a mutual solution.

"Thomas Muller is one of the greatest player personalities this club has produced, and therefore it was important to us to find a fair and amicable agreement."

Muller has turned out 24 times for the Bavarian outfit in the Bundesliga this campaign, scoring once, but has only started on eight occasions.

"The definition of a legend! It's been a pleasure to share these two years together! Let's make it a perfect ending," England and Bayern striker Harry Kane posted on X.

Bayern Munich said they would mark Muller's departure with a testimonial and his final opportunity to play competitively will come during the Fifa Club World Cup in the USA, which starts on 15 June.

Bayern Munich president Herbert Hainer said: "Thomas Muller is the definition of a Bavarian fairytale career. He ranks among the most outstanding personalities in FC Bayern history."

Sporting director Christoph Freund said: "Thomas Muller: no tricks, no show, just an incredible amount of instinct and extraordinary reading of the game - a pure footballer. There'll never be another one like him, that's for sure, and he internalised FC Bayern from a young age. This decision was extremely hard, as everyone can understand."

Bayern hold a nine-point lead over Bayer Leverkusen at the top of the Bundesliga and face Inter Milan in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Rudiger faces ban for throwing object at referee

Antonio Rudiger was sent off for throwing an object at the referee during Real Madrid's Copa del Rey final defeat by Barcelona.

Rudiger and Real team-mate Lucas Vazquez, who had both been substituted, were shown straight red cards for angrily reacting to a foul given against Kylian Mbappe shortly before the final whistle.

Real's England midfielder Jude Bellingham, 21, was also later sent off for dissent.

Referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea said in his report that centre-back Rudiger, 32, was dismissed for "throwing an object from the technical area, which missed me". Rudiger reportedly threw an ice cube at the official., external

The Germany defender could be facing a lengthy ban, according to the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) disciplinary code.

If sanctioned under article 101, which covers "mild violence" towards referees, Rudiger could receive a suspension of between four and 12 matches.

However, if his actions are deemed more serious, article 104, which covers "assault against referees", states players may be banned for three to six months if "the act was a single act and did not cause any harmful consequences".

If the act is deemed as having posed a "serious risk" even without the referee requiring medical attention, the suspension could extend to between six months and a year.

What happened?

Real Madrid had come from behind to lead 2-1 before Ferran Torres' 84th-minute equaliser sent the Clasico final in Seville to extra time.

Barcelona defender Jules Kounde drilled in a 22-yard screamer in the 116th minute to ultimately win a thrilling encounter on Saturday.

In the final moments, Real forward Mbappe tried to shrug off Eric Garcia and drive into the penalty area but was penalised for a foul on the Barcelona defender.

The Real bench reacted furiously, with Rudiger appearing to throw an object at De Burgos Bengoetxea, for which he was dismissed, before having to also be restrained by members of the Real coaching staff.

Vazquez, 33, was sent off for entering the field of play and protesting against the decision.

"You can see something is thrown - [Rudiger] is in big trouble, it doesn't miss the referee by a million miles, it's at the referee," said Premier Sports commentator Terry Gibson.

"It's pathetic from the Real Madrid players."

The referee report states Bellingham was later sent off for approaching the officials in an "aggressive attitude" and "having to be restrained by his team-mates".

Video footage of the tunnel at half-time appears to show Bellingham say: "Everything goes in their favour. Every 50-50 decision goes in their favour" - though he was not sanctioned for this comment.

It is the second time Bellingham has been sent off for Real this season for dissent. He was given a two-match ban for swearing at the referee in a 1-1 La Liga draw with Osasuna in Februrary.

There were tensions between Real Madrid and De Burgos Bengoetxea in the build-up to the match.

The referee broke down in tears in a news conference over the pressure the club's TV channel has put officials under, prompting an angry response by Real.

In February, Real Madrid wrote a formal letter of complaint to RFEF and Spain's High Council for Sports saying Spanish refereeing was "rigged" and "completely discredited".

After that letter, which followed a 1-0 loss to Espanyol, La Liga president Javier Tebas said Real Madrid had "lost their head".

Later that month the RFEF condemned the "repulsive" abuse suffered by referee Jose Luis Munuera Montero for sending off Bellingham against Osasuna.

Earlier this month, Rudiger and Mbappe were given suspended one-match bans and fined for indecent conduct during their Champions League last-16 win against Atletico Madrid, with Dani Ceballos also fined.
