In this exclusive interview, Mohammad Haroon — former Head Coach of Norway, Austria, and the Qatar national team, and a former first-class cricketer in Pakistan — shares his expert analysis on the structural flaws in Pakistan cricket and the technical decline of Babar Azam. The ECB Level 4 coach dissects Pakistan's outdated T20 approach, the impact of player mismanagement, and why the current think tank is failing the team's best batter — and much more.

Key revelations include:

• Pakistan system critique: "Our domestic cricket standard is not good enough" — He notes that the shifts and changes in departmental cricket have significantly impacted the overall quality of the game. Without a stable and high-quality structure, he argues that players entering the national side simply cannot compete with the top-tier talent from countries like India or England.

• T20 physique gap: "Pakistan doesn't lack skill. They lack physique" — He suggests that Pakistan is using an outdated T20 strategy and trying to force a high strike rate on players who aren't naturally suited for it, rather than building a strategy around the specific strengths of the available talent pool. He argues that while Pakistani players do not lack skill, they lack the physicality and explosive fitness required for modern T20 cricket [

• Selection chaos: "You bring someone very easily and you drop someone very easily" — Haroon criticizes the "chop and change" policy, where players are brought in and dropped too quickly based on one or two innings, which destroys player confidence and trust.

• Babar's technical flaw: "He covers the off stump now. The same ball, he can't play in the cover area" — Babar has introduced a trigger movement where he covers the off-stump with his foot. This restricts his room, preventing him from playing his signature shots in the cover and midoff areas.

• Power-hitting damage: "Your bottom hand starts getting dominant" — Haroon emphasizes that Babar does not have "explosive fitness" and is not a natural power hitter. By trying to force sixes to meet public expectations, his bottom hand has become too dominant, ruining the flexibility and timing that made him world-class.

• Dressing room culture: "This is a big example of club-level thinking" — He mentions that players often become "too big for the game" once they achieve success and lack proper mentors to manage their egos. He cites a specific on-field argument between Usman Khan and Naseem Shah as an example of a lack of basic "club-level" tactical thinking.

At last an ex-player who has the guts to say it as it is.

Apart from what many ''experts'' mention, why nobody is talking about his fitness. Compared to lets 3 years ago, he looks unfit and carrying some extra weight.
It's more of an attitude problem with him. He still has decent reflexes and okay fitness for batting. More of a mental problem with him. He appears like someone who doesn't listen to the coaches and is a ziddi person.

Its quite simple. T20 is not for Babar, leave your ego behind the boundary line, quit T20, concentrate on odis and tests, thats what you're good at.

His goose was cooked the moment he started believing the hype from his delulu fans.

Doesn't have the talent to be an all format superstar.

Knowing your limits is very important. Guy tried to turn into a powerhitter and then started failing in all formats since he lost his conventional batting technique as well.

Tests is his weakest format, even worse than t20, 1 single SENA 100, average of 38 outside of Karachi and Pindi. These are really poor numbers

It’s his weakest format but fans would love him to just leave us alone in T20s and just do whatever it takes to stay the hell away.

Please just stay in Test! Give him a long rope. Let him average 25 in 3 years but just stay here and don’t even think about coming into T20 and defiling it anymore with his crap approach

That's not too bad. Rahane made an entire career with such numbers.

Rahane underachieved a lot but again he was never a superstar and still managed 4 Test hundreds in SENA. For all the criticism KL Rahul gets, he has 7 Test hundreds in SENA. Babar for all the adulation he receives is a really poor Test batter. The only format he should technically play for Pakistan is in ODIs. Even in that format his average has been on a downward spiral. Last year he averaged 34 at an SR of 77 in 17 ODIs.

Babar should just focus on ODI and tests. He is attracting unnecessary criticism due to his t20 performance and that is affecting his overall performance as well... He needs to let it go

Good only for JAMODIs.

Still one can justify his place place in test side but not in T20

Just want to point out that many people think his ''slow'' batting is suited for TEST cricket, but he has failed way too many times in TESTs. I cant even remember him ever winning a TEST for Pakistan. His numbers are also very poor. Like I said good only for ODIS as long as they are meaningless.

Agreed to that. He hasn't delivered anything significant in test arena despite playing for more than 8 years.

Thats why, not that ''we'' play a lot of TEST cricket but still on merit a player performing in domestic at no 3/4/5 should be given a go.

Babar Azam is not crumbling, post 2021 Babar Azam chose to not focus on his fitness or work on his technique, he has been brutally exposed at the International level and has decided to not work on his flaws anymore, instead he believes in focusing and investing on his PR and marketing teams unfortunately...

Babar Azam should be ashamed of his performances and his attitude, and we should be ashamed of including a repeat failure in our team over and over again, just because he could displayed a bit of talent a few years ago...

Lets be very clear, Babar Azam does not believe that he is any less of a player than he was 5 years ago, he does not believe that his fitness or technique is lacking in any way, he believes that people should put him on a pedestal and honour him, despite repeated failures and embarrassments..

That's what crumbling is supposed to mean I reckon. Things going apart one by one from fitness to technique and current relevance of his playing style in world cricket.

Important distinction is he is choosing to "crumble", he's made this conscious choice to not work on his technique, fitness and stamina.. and that's all on him...

Pakistan batting coach Hanif Malik shared following thoughts regarding Babar Azam in a recent media interaction:

"I refuse to believe there is any issue with Babar Azam. He is detail-oriented when it comes to his practice and works hard."

"Babar had a peak for so long at the beginning of his career and a trough had to come."

"We measure Babar's performances on a different scale because of what he has done in the past."

Err… what scale has Babar Azam achieved in the past that no Pakistani great had ever achieved before?

This is ‘delulu of epic proportions.
