Bazid chats with Saj about Pakistan's chances at the World Cup, the importance of Shadab Khan and Iftikhar Ahmed at the World Cup, why India is the team to beat, who will be the semi-finalists, the importance of the middle-overs, Pakistan's best XI, Pakistan's spin options and more.

I agree with Bazid Khan’s statement that Pakistan stands a great chance of winning the World Cup. Team unpredictable can do anything when it is their day.

Pakistan stands a chance surely. they just need to get themselves out of their comfort zone and we are in the game. thrashing in warm-up games may be that factor which will make them think about their approach.

If pakistan wants to do well in this world cup, they must keep below points in their mind-

1. Fakhar zaman should not be ignored inspite of his pathetic form in last few series. These are absolutely flat wickets and he will be the most important batsman after Babar in these conditions.
2. Haris Rauf is not a new ball bowler, doesn't matters how fast he bowls. A bowler can't be successful with new ball unless he swings or seam it. He should be bowling after 20 overs in the middle of the innings and in death overs.
3. Shadab is not a frontline spinner. Either Usama or Abrar should be played in every match and Shadab should be there as a supporting spinner who can bat a bit in lower order.
4. Saud shakeel must be there at number four or five. Having Ifti at 5 and Agha at 6 will be a blunder and makes the batting lineup really thin.

Realistically they don't, unless they get inspired by something and punch above their weight in every single game and play like their life is dependent on it.

Australia, England, India, New Zealand and South Africa all are placed higher than Pakistan in the list of favourites in my view. Let's see if Pakistan can actually do what Imarn's side did in 1992... That was a very inspired performance.

A lot of things have to go right for Pakistan for them to win the World Cup.

Players playing out of their skins.
Some players overachieving in India.
Luck going there way.
Inspired captaincy.

well practically Pakistan is not looking favourite at the moment, their bowling combination is all over the place and more importantly ur most of the batters are out of touch which means we are only relying on Babar and Rizwan which are certainly not going to rescue in every match.

At some point Babar's luck in ICC tournaments is going to run out and Pakistan's lack of planning, preparation is going to hurt them badly.

We saw that in the Asia Cup match against India and Sri Lanka and will likely see the same in the ODI WC as well.

Interesting that Bazid says Shadab and Iftikhar's form is important to Pakistan's chances at the World Cup.

The middle-order will need to be at their best to ensure they set big totals or chase them down, as I'm not expecting much from the openers.

Bazid has a point about Shadab Khan

"if Iftikhar Ahmed and Shadab Khan have a good tournament, then I think Pakistan will be very well served"

We already know..that Shadab is in pathetic form, bowling full tosses…he should be out of playng 11, as soon as possible..if Pak even wants to progress, in the world cup…

Bazid is one of the more thoughtful Pakistani ex-cricketers.

However when he said Shadab needs to focus more on wicket-taking than economical T20 style bowling - the problem is Shadab isn't doing either. He bowls minimum one full toss an over and doesn't look like creating even a half chance.

His problems are technical than mental. I hope he miraculously comes good but on recent form he doesn't make the XI.

His assessment is pretty naive basically saying that we need everyone to be at their absolute best and have luck go there way.

Pakistan stands a great chance of winning? Since when?

Team unpredictable? You could claim that about the 1996, 1999, 2011 and 2019 team. 2003, 2007, 2015 and 2023 teams, never stood a chance.

Bro, have you had any thought that the team will win the Champions Trophy of 2017? I bet you didn't. I am just thinking about that right now. This team is very unpredictable and can do anything out of the box especially when nobody is believing in them.

Yes I did ironically, I just didn't exist on pakpassion at that time 😂😂. But I'm being honest and not lying, my entire family watched the ct with me and I was the only one who believed in Pakistan. Lol, I didn't think they would 100% win but I knew they weren't likely completly out of it.

My judgment of 2017 was based of these reasons.

A) Rankings don't matter in a cup.

B) Sarfraz at this time had a 100% win record in t20 while captaining and he was also a psl winner + 2006 under 19 winner so he knew how to lead well.

C) the introduction of Babar at 3, Hafeez at 4 amd sarfraz's insistence of playing imad waseem and Amir, Imad who was with sarfi during under 19 and Amir who sarfi admired. Lastly sarfi's insistence on having fakhar who was in the form of his life during that game.

Only weak link was shehzad but sarfi isn't brainless like misbah or babar and I knew he would drop shehzad in a heartbeat considering his 2006 track record.

2017 Pakistan didn't have the strongest team but they had a good team, Azhar Ali unlike imam who goes on his merry way actually strikes and kept pace with fakhar, he made sure fakhar wasn't the only one striking and he didn't let RR drop.

Hafeez was gun at no 4 and in terms of being an allrounder he was far superior to any nonsense we are carrying with sheddy or nawaz.

Amir and hasan were in the form of their lives and were known for delivering well in tournaments with Amir and hasan delivering in psl. Malik was also in form and imad in 2016 went not out and scored multiple 50's against England and his bowling was 🔥 in that period.

The 2017 team had zero out of form players, zero bad players( Excluding shehzad), and everyone played in their batting no + a captain who was attacking, rotated bowlers and set the field very well. Sarfi wasn't a fluke captain, he's won multiple tournaments before.

2023 team has out of form players, players batting out of position and a clueless captain lol.

You are 100% correct about 2017, I didn't think we'd win, but I didn't exactly lose all hope, I thought pakistan wouldn't do as badly as people thought they would since people thought we'd flunk each match. Once we reached semi's I knew we'd win both semi and final, the team spirit was just too high at the time.

Problem is babar can't ever create that team spirit, I've seen how babar and friends 11 in finals, their hopeless.

Also BTW 2017 team crushes our wc 2023 team, easily. The middle order of haris sohail, Imad waseem, Sarfraz, Hafeez and malik crushes the middle order of rizwan, Saud, chacha, Shadab and nawaz. Only saud is a contender, rizzu is not a better non4 then hafeez, the less are hilarious.

Another thing 2017 had a better spin unit, a more inform hasan Ali as well. Azhar is also > Imam. Imam has higher stats because he just keeps nudging away for easy singles and is the definition of soft runs. Azhar doesn't perform as much but he kept pace with fakhar, and wasn't slow during that cup, he struck well.

Good for you and I trust you that you must have thought about us winning. I want you to keep the same thought going here as well, maybe you are lucky for Team Pakistan.

There is healthy competition between a few teams so it depends who has a better outing on the given day.

Bharat were 2/3 yesterday, it seemed game over at one point but Kohli and Rahul pulled it from the jaws of defeat. This is what it will take eventually to lift the trophy. A lot of inspired performances.

Had Australia taken that Kohli catch then things could have been different for India. But still, credit goes to Kohli and Rahul for the way they kept going strong and took no pressure.

If Kohli was an ordinary player, he would have not made use of that chance given to him. Thats what great players do, you give them a chance and they will make you cry for it eventually.

Had Rohit not dropped Zampa at 168/8(they went on to make 21 runs until next wicket) , Australia may have made just 175. That would have made the entire Australian bowling innings irrelevant to be honest.

Yep. Chances do come and to make use of those chances is a real deal. Not everyone's cup of tea.

Abdulla shafeeq got dropped today and scored century. would PAK have lost the match? He still played well to score a century. ifs and buts are meaningless in sports.

Had the Argentine keeper did not save the last minute goal attempts in extra time, Messi never would have won football world cup but he did. Let's avoid ifs and buts like kiddos.

bro check my last response as well. Batsman still has to convert the chances into big scores which virat kohli did as well as Abdullah. Abdullah scored a century while Virat scored 80+.

At this moment in time I can't see Pakistan winning the World Cup.

Yes they are still in it, and there is a lot of cricket to be played, but there are currently far too many problems with this squad.

Before the start of the World Cup, a lot of cricket experts were predicting Pakistan to reach at least the semifinals of the tournament but the team has failed to perform up to its potential. Especially, our the spin bowlers who seem to be struggling in all the matches.

Bazid Khan commented on the new first-class rules for the ongoing President's Trophy 2023-24 on a Pakistan's local sports channel:

"One thing, on which every country in the world bases its cricket, now even during the World Cup, I shared these things with you. Shield cricket has a 100-year history, and Ranji Trophy has been around for more than 100 years. The setup of County cricket has also been in place for 100-150 years."

"Now, there's a new drama in Pakistan cricket. The value of first-class cricket hasn't been given due consideration. It's the first time playing conditions are not published on the website, as if it's from the back door."

"I am not sure of it, I just heard, and how can I be sure when you don't publish it on the website. A rule has been revealed in first-class cricket. In the 4-day matches, the first inning will have 80 overs - a restricted first innings. You claim to want to develop players, but when you diminish the value of first-class cricket, how will that happen? Only 80 overs will be given to the first batting team, and there's a different points system. This has devalued first-class cricket. What about the second new ball? How will spinners get wickets? The way to make runs and win matches has been disrupted because you've restricted it."

"Another thing, in the National T20, under-19 players were not allowed to play T20. Talks are about capacity building, but when you don't give under-19 this opportunity, how will their development happen?"

"I've heard that under-23 players are now mandatory in every first-class team, like in the PSL. Impose these restrictions on the Pakistan team as well. Please, this is a professional sport, there should be the best 11 players, and no one should have a guaranteed spot. If Shehzad is under-23, he will play all the matches, even though there might be a better player sitting out."

"All these things are devaluing first-class cricket. The rules of first-class cricket around the world have been the same for so many years. PCB has changed the rules, but actual work hasn't been done. Ground conditions are a different topic, but rules should not be changed."

"We should do the real work, what is natural. Don't do artificial things; such forced changes won't bring any results. If there are 80 overs, people will play fast, you can't force it. Leave first-class cricket if you don't understand its value. Since I've been watching, PCB finishes first-class cricket in 2 months, organizes back-to-back matches. Creating this situation at the lower level only creates confusion.i am 100% percent sure a cricketer has made such rulee. When everyone who comes in thinks they understand, these are the results you get. I was very distressed yesterday; other things don't bother me, but don't harm what is your bread and butter. Then what will be left."

He is right. Pakistan has destroyed first-class cricket in Pakistan. Rules should not be changed. If they have made changes, they should bring it to the public. And, in my opinion, changing rules can't bring improvements. Changing mindset and approach can bring change.

He is totally right and it's obvious pcb do not care about the longer format. Also having a u21 player in the xi is ridiculous and totally unfair.

Bazid is like Rashid Latif, always complaining and never satisfied. U-19 players should be kept away from T-20 Cricket, we have already seen what has happened to Haider Ali.

Haider Ali just one example ?

This is a wrong analysis in my opinion. Players don't need to be kept away from any form of cricket. Instead, players need to be given the environment to succeed in all forms of cricket. David Warner became a Test player after he shone in T20 cricket. He made his FC debut 2 years after he debuted in T20 cricket. The problem in Pakistan is that cricket isn't an elite sport. It's played by cricketers who are barely matriculation pass and with the substandard quality of education, they do not get to develop IQ. They don't have the intelligence (both in batting and bowling) to transition themselves between various formats and develop match awareness. The solution to this is not less cricket for such players but more cricket. In all formats.

Do other teams not have U-19 players playing T20 cricket. This is nonsense.

And Haider Ali wasn't ruined because he played T20. He was ruined by Pakistan's coaching staff which tried to change him into a bigger hitter to a "proper batsmen". His batting & technique were modified too and looks like he can't even clear his leg anymore to hit a big shot anymore.

It's funny actually. Every Pakistani fan dies to have a Buttler or Maxwell type player on the team but then call the players brainless idiots anytime they try to play that way. Just look at the criticism Mohammad Haris gets for it.

Nonetheless, Bazid is absolutely right in this instance. Everything this management has done is some of the worst we've seen in quite some time and completely ruined all the hard work Wasim & Mani did. I posted the 80 overs nonsense in that thread too and its beyond absurd. Why even hold this joke of a tournament. Same with the List A 45 overs. These are dumb changes no literally no reason other than PCB doing everything they can to make domestic as meaningless as possible. It's no wonder selections are made based on PSL.

Bazid is one of the few sane voices we have regardless of how monotonous he sounds.

What's the point of 80 over first inning gymnastics?

What's happened to Haider is 70% his own fault. Having come through age group cricket, he should know how to be adaptable. If a person's brains urges him to slog every time he panics, he shouldn't be playing the game even if he is as talented as Inzi or Yousaf.

Players need to take responsibility of their own failures.

PCB came up with an explanation to the criticism of Bazid Khan, who was not happy about the change in rules in the ongoing Presidents Trophy.

------------------------

Explainer: New rules in President's Trophy Grade-I

Lahore, 19 December 2023: The PCB has made some changes to four-day cricket playing conditions for the President’s Trophy Grade-I on a trial basis to make the tournament more competitive and result-oriented. Restricting first innings of teams to 80 overs is aimed at improving scoring rates in domestic cricket, revamping the current approach and developing an attacking style of play in line with modern-day cricket.

This will provide data for comparing the competitive standards of this tournament with the previous tournament, which was played according to traditional first-class rules.

The board will take input from all participants at the end of the tournament to assess the outcomes of these rules. The PCB expects fans and pundits alike to be patient with their assessment of this domestic tournament, which is taking place after a gap of four years.

The PCB affirms that a decision on the following revisions will be made after the conclusion of the tournament. These changes include:

9.1 Rolling

After the toss, the captain of the batting side may request the umpires that the pitch be rolled for not more than 7 minutes. This request shall be entertained only if the request has been made within 5 minutes after the Toss.

12.7 Hours of Play; Minimum Overs Requirement

All matches in the subject tournament will be restricted to 80 overs in the first innings. The second innings will be open.

16.9 Points

If a captain decides to either declare or forfeit his team’s first innings before the completion of 80 overs, the bowling side will get bowling bonus points.

Never seen him so angry - and then predictable PCB reaction.

Happy Birthday to Mr. Evergreen, the great Bazid Khan. He turns 43 today.

He might not have the greatest voice for commentary but he's one of the best in Pakistan when it comes to actual insight into the game, and also one of the few who lacks ego and agendas so I find his views worth listening to.

Oh sorry I glossed over the post and thought this was about the upcoming T20 WC.

Yes I thought he was referring to the T20 WC as well. Pakistan are not a good ODI side by today's standards, but they could put together a very good T20 side.

Bazid Khan speaking during an interview:

"We talk about players who hit the ground running and score quickly, Mohammad Haris is one of those players. He won't waste balls in powerplay and attack from ball one,"

"You got so many spinners and they can pick from Imad Wasim, Shadab Khan, Abrar Ahmed and all-rounders Iftikhar Ahmed and Saim Ayub.

"If they want to go with a pace-bowling all-rounder, I could think of Aamer Jamal. He doesn't have big records but stands up at big moments,"

Bazid’s Pakistan squad for T20 World Cup:

Babar Azam (c), Mohammad Rizwan, Mohammad Haris (wk), Azam Khan (wk), Iftikhar Ahmed, Shadab Khan, Fakhar Zaman, Saim Ayub, Imad Wasim, Abrar Ahmed, Aamer Jamal, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Naseem Shah, Mohammad Amir, Haris Rauf

I agree with Bazid's squad. He and I think alike.

So there is no place for Farhan, Usama Mir, Haseeb. I think haris in squad makes more sense than haseeb so he is right there. Usama is going to make it if he has some good games in next series. Farhan's non-selection is injustice.

Bazid Khan via Ten Sports:

"Had this been our first game of the tournament, we would've been very happy and saying this was a great and clinical chase. However, we need to improve given our situation. We did not score many runs against spinners, especially in the 12th and 16th overs. Good T20 batters calculate that this is the matchup I have to take on. As Misbah and Malik said, you need to take risks especially when the game is in your control."

Bazid Khan during the commentary:

"The pitch is so hard they should use this soil to make houses with it"
