From driving a Taxi to donning the national team jersey, Aamer Jamal's journey is a demonstration of patience, perseverance, and unparalleled determination.

After bowling a fascinating last over on his T20I debut against England to win the game for Pakistan, Jamal was dropped from the T20I side but the all-rounder from Mianwali didn't give up.

He continued the grinding process in domestic cricket and was among the toppers of the QeA Trophy that year before he was picked for Peshawar Zalmi. On the recent tour to Australia, Jamal showcased his all-round abilities down under ended up as the second-highest wicket-taker of the series with 18 wickets. The Australian skipper Pat Cummins topped the charts with just one more wicket than Jamal.

PakPassion editor Saj got a chance to interact with Jamal as the all-rounder is busy in his County & Vitality Blast commitments for Birmingham Bears. He talked candidly in this short interview and revealed his reaction to the unfortunate loss against USA a few days back. Aamer also talked about his stay in England with Birmingham & the experience of playing County & T20 cricket in the country. Sit back & enjoy this lovely conversation.

I think he has been unfairly discarded after a few matches. He can be a valuable addition in the T20 team after the world cup. He is clearly the best medium pace all rounder currently in Pakistan.

I think we should give him more chances in the white ball teams, a fast bowling all rounder is handy to have in a side and he's certainly a better AR than chacha

He is a good all rounder but still need to polish his skills some bit to become a consistent performer.
I see Australia making Cameron Green. They carry him everyone and are investing heavily.

On the other hand we want genuine pace bowling all rounders without doing anything.

Pace bowling all rounders are the hardest to make. They need plenty of time and right direction to show you results

He is absolutely bowling crap in county circuit at the moment , may be he is not fit or hiding some injury?

He should have been placed in place of Haris Rauf for sure in this world cup. Better bowler, better batsman

he can learn on the job he has shown with his attitude that he should be given a long run but of course we are retarded so we wont do that most likely we will see another comeback of the Akmals, Shoaib Malik and Ahmed Shehzad

Jamal and Wasim Jr to all-rounders with pace both being ignored, does make you wonder

First time I met him and what a lovely guy with a great attitude.

A few superstars who are nowhere to be seen these days can learn from him.

Cameron Green is a generational talent who was scoring centuries for fun in the Sheffield Shield. Agree that Pakistan needs to invest in Jamal though, we don’t exactly have someone of Green’s calibre waiting

Lots of fitness issues lately and he's hardly played for Warwickshire.

I hope he doesn't become another injury prone bowler.

Over rated won’t make it. Always on the cusp of getting taken apart like a lot of the current Pakistan pacers. Age not on his side too

143 runs and 18 wickets in 3 Tests
88 runs and 2 wickets in 6 T20Is so far

Happy Birthday to Aamer Jamal.
Hope he can find his feet in the team because Pakistan desperately needs a good allrounder.

Although this guy is injured but, his heroics against Australia in his debut series earned him a spot in the test squad for the home test series against Bangladesh.

His inclusion is subject to his Fitness before the series starts.

Hopefully he gets fit in time and plays these game.

Aamir Jamal released from Test squad

Right-arm fast bowler Aamir Jamal has been released from the Test squad ahead of the series against Bangladesh. Aamir, who was earlier included in the squad subject to fitness clearance, has been advised to work on his fitness at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore.

Aamir is recovering from a back injury which he sustained while playing county cricket this year.

Aamer Jamal told Saj he got injured due to a back spasm due to the stress of travelling - surely must be more than that?

Who is going to replace him now in the squad. Mubasir khan maybe??

He is not the only cricketer who travels , its just his lack of planning and physical fitness.

Travelling making him injured? Is he even fit enough to be playing professional cricket or not?
Why he kept on playing country cricket and appeared in Pakistan team camp, hiding his injury ? Very unprofessional attitude . No wonder county kicked him out midway.

It was not that he hid his injury. PCB knew it and his inclusion was subjected to fitness. Now he is out for a while.

Always same story, player breaks through. Gets offers to play T20 cricket/ County cricket, and you just wait for the breakdown! Players are not smart enough but PCB also does not care one bit.

He was carrying an injury in 4 day games during county season as well , he was made to sit out the remaining games.

Aamer Jamal speaking during a media interaction:

"Fast bowling is all about aggression. If there is no aggression in your fast bowling, then I don't believe it's truly fast bowling. Everyone has their own style, but I prefer aggression. Whenever I am on the field, I always try to be aggressive and give 100%. Unfortunately, I missed the Bangladesh series due to injury, which was very unfortunate, but injuries can happen to anyone at any time.”

“However, in this upcoming series, Insha’Allah, we will do our best as a team to deliver a strong performance. My aim is to start from where I left off, and more importantly, to ensure that my performance benefits the team. Just like our series in Australia, we played well and didn’t play badly, but if those performances lead to wins, their value would have been much higher. So, my goal is to start again from where I left off and contribute to the team’s success."

Playing 1st Test against England

I'm unsure if he'll perform up to the mark while hiding his injury

Must be missing the bounce from the aussie pitches
Might need to adapt to pakistani concrete, but seems to be offering lots of team work and can't fault him for his effort

He is a proper test match bowler. Things like this can happen. Remmeber Sehwag mauling Akhtar.

Looks to be the best Pakistani seamer on show. I think if he had decent support from other bowlers he would have more wickets to show for his effort in the first test.

He needs to get back to full fitness. He’s got a good attitude but his speed is down and currently not good enough for these pitches.

Brought up his 50 as well and playing an inning of grit and resilience so far.

Happy with his performance in this game???

Jamal has not bowled a single ball in the 1st inning so far. He is the only pacer in the team but no used.

If Pakistan loses this match, it would be because Masood did not turn to Jamal when Smith and Atkinson were smashing the spinners to all corners.

You have to do something to break the batsmen rhythm. He kept feeding them spin over and over again.

Unfair that he didn't even get a single over. Could have been used when the Smith-Atkinson partnership was going strong to try and arrest some momentum

I dont understand that if Shan Masood doesn't have any confidence in him then why did he pick him? It would have been better to include another batter in his place.

Aamer Jamal is all set to play the T10 format - he will represent the Colombo Jaguars in the Lanka T10 Super League 2024

Guy missed out in Australia but now he is making his ODI debut today against Zimbabwe. Good to see him back. hope so he can do a good job as an all-rounder.

Aamir Jamal has been named in the T20I squad for the upcoming 3-match T20I series against Zimbabwe following his brilliant form in the ODI series.

He needs to bat higher up in limited overs Cricket as well. At no. 6 or 7.

Pakistan will be wasting him if he's not given big responsibility with bat and ball in domestic Cricket at least.

Look at how India developed Pandya and Australia developed Green. Fast bowling all rounders need time and opportunity

I will say this again. Pakistan team needs a player like him at no. 7 for Champions Trophy. He has the fighting mentality and will provide balance to the side as 4th seamer. You won't have to rely on him to bowl 10 overs every game. But he will be very useful when your non regulars spinners like Salman and Saim will be getting tonked.

Yesterday as well Rizwan had to bowl out Salman and bring Abrar in death overs vs Klaasen. Those were very expensive overs. Pakistan were lucky they had enough runs. But in important games like in CT25, teams won't spare your non regular spinners.

There's still time. Induct Jamal and solidify him as no. 7 all rounder before CT25 begins.

Shan Masood speaking during a media talk ahead of 1st Test against South Africa:

“From Australia, we did one thing that we think is very important going forward in Test cricket. We backed Aamer Jamal in spin-friendly conditions; he occupied that number eight slot. There are different aspects to his bowling; he is not one-dimensional. He is handy where reverse swing is necessary, and he can also be effective where an enforcer is required. He is equally skillful when it comes to bowling with the new ball, plus his batting has impressed everyone. His innings in Sydney and the 40 runs he scored in Multan were very good, as the 50 he made in the second innings was very good. The makeup of your number eight in a Test match is essential. If you look at South Africa’s side, you’ll find that the best teams in the world need players who are all-rounders, allowing you to field specialist bowlers.”

Aamer Jamal didn’t bowl many overs, but in 8 overs on Day 2 of the First Test against South Africa, he secured bowling figures of 2/36.

Gutsy cricketer and a must in all 3 formats. He will win big games for Pakistan mark my words.

Aamer Jamal scored 18 off 32 balls on Day 3 of the first Test against South Africa. Why can't he be a reliable all-rounder for us?"

One of the worst pieces of game awareness I've seen even by our standards.

Test match hanging in balance with team losing a cluster of wickets - instead of staying with the set batsman you pick out one of the two men in the deep stationed for the pull off the bowling of a 35 year old barely quicker than Abbas.

No wonder this guy was playing club cricket in Sydney not long ago. Australia now seems like beginner's luck.

What the hell has happened to this guy?

Was bowling 145kph in Australia and over here is bowling 125kph dibbly dobblers.

I was thinking the same thing, why has his pace dropped drastically? And if think-tank knew about his lack of pace, why have they dropped Naseem???

At this pace, he is not effective at all

I never wanted this guy to play the 2nd test against South Africa. He has been pathetic in the game so far.

Getting hit like a club level bowler.

He was just good in one and a half season where had a purple patch otherwise his domestic record is abysmal. Time to move on from him.

Jamal Bubble has burst wide open. He is neither good with ball, nor he did anything with the bat so far.

Time to move on

Is he an all-rounder? Is he fulfilling the definition of an all-rounder? What he is doing that our bowler Umar Gul used to do occasionally as well. Aamer Jamal doesn't have the right to call himself an all-rounder.

All-rounder Aamer Jamal has been selected in the Gold category by Karachi Kings in the PSL Draft 2025

Although Aamer performed exceptionally well in the Australian Test series, his inclusion as a frontline bowler or all-rounder disrupts team balance. He would be a valuable asset as a fifth bowling option and number 7/8 batsman in a team with three established fast bowlers and a specialist spinner.

Prime example of how pathetic Pak cricket has become, this guy is club level and here you have him play TEST cricket.

How long will they gate keep him?

He can slot right in our One Day side. Will be that 5th bowler. Will bowl better than part timer Niazi and also have good hitting ability to come and do that at no. 7. Which Niazi right now hasn't developed. Niazi shouldn't be batting at no. 7.
