Hassan Ali is a rare breed of cricketer who lights up the stadium not just with his incredible bowling but also with his infectious energy.

The Gujranwala-born pacer rose to prominence during the Champions Trophy 2017, claiming 13 wickets and earning the Player of the Tournament award.

Since then, the pacer has seen multiple ups and downs in his career, from claiming a Five-For at Lord's to bowing out of the ICC men's 2023 World Cup in the group stages.
Despite struggling with injuries that sidelined him from international cricket, Hassan has been a regular feature in County cricket, representing Lancashire and Birmingham over the past few years.

In the latest episode of PakPassion exclusive interviews, Saj talks to Hassan Ali, where they discuss recent events in Pakistan Cricket, the disappointing T20 World Cup campaign, address team infighting rumors, and reflect on Hassan's remarkable career journey so far.

Key highlights of the interview are:
  • Reflections on his cricket career and recent challenges due to injury.
  • Pride on being called back to the national team and the importance of fitness.
  • Comments on rumors of dressing room negativity.
  • Champions Trophy in Pakistan and why he believes it will elevate the country's cricketing stature.

Hassan Ali's passion and dedication to improving his skills are truly admirable. While he may be better suited for the longer format, his recent performance in the 2024 county season has been underwhelming, with only three wickets taken in three matches for Warwickshire. Despite his optimism for a comeback, it's hard not to wonder if the PCB management could have handled him differently to maximize his potential as a long-term asset. After all, his ODI career was nothing short of dreamy.

He didn't have the benefit of a height or big swing like Shaheen. Ever since his pace dropped, he became rather ordinary. He still get his movement off pitch when he's in a rhythm and is difficult to face but more often he will get smashed in limited overs.

He's quite a likeable guy. What he says about fast bowlers napping in the dressing room makes a lot of sense to me and it made me reconsider my views about that topic

I really miss his CT 2017 version big time. Was a great bowler then still fine now but unfortunately not at that level anymore. Hopefully he gets back in his mojo. Against India he has been generally good.

Pace is gone. Once you lose pace and bowl around 125Ks, your Int career is done.
He wasnt that quick from day one... he was a 130 to 135 kmph bowler and accurate line and length was his key strengths.

But after his comeback from injury Hasan Ali is not the same and might still be struggling with some injuries.

Good character and hard worker. Should have never been brought back for WC 2023 though. He is just too pedestrian now.

He must be a big WWE fan seeing his love for celebration styles

Which Indian players is he talking to as they're nowhere near interested in such a thing as long as Hindutva rule is ruling the roost.

I think you have to separate the players from the government. I'm sure many Indian players have dreamt of shushing the Pakistan crowd

To be honest we (fans) want India to visit Pakistan regularly for Test Series. I am sure some of the players also think in the same line. You have the flattest pitches on earth and this can help some of our batsmen to boost their stats (and get back the confidence when it comes to test cricket batting, they have hostile conditions even in home matches!) Plus you have the most harmless bowlers compared to SENA bowlers...

Hassan Ali should let everybody know the names of those players who want to come because even if they do want to come, BCCI won't let them come.

Hassan Ali in a recent podcast shared following thoughts:

On Test captaincy offer:

"In 2021 I was named as the Test cricketer of the year for Pakistan. And was part of the Test side too. The selector at that time told me that my name was among the top 3 to 4 candidates in the race for the red ball format captaincy. Obviously, I wanted to take on this responsibility as this would be a great source of pride for me. I have been a Test captain of my club for a long time so you never know (on becoming future Test captain)."

Biggest loss for Pakistan cricket and the reason behind failure in CWC 2023:

"The team wasn't as united as they used to be before and it was a reason behind (the poor show) in CWC 2023. And the biggest loss for Pakistan cricket has been constant changes in team management. We have changed some 26 to 27 coaches in the last four years. So this phenomenon has a bearing on the team's performance as in Pakistan cricket the captain alone can't address all the flaws in the team unless you are Imran Khan. So Babar also suffered as a captain because of the abrupt change of coaches and team's direction."

Hasan Ali is the original hero of 2017 CT triumph. Let’s never forget that it was on the back of his performances that Pakistan turned things around in that tournament and made it to the final.

It is a travesty that he doesn’t have extreme fitness like a Steyn to keep bowling at that level. But anyway it’s good to see him making a kind of a come back.

Wishing him the best.

Karachi Kings vice-captain Hasan Ali on Tuesday equalled former pacer Wahab Riaz’s record for most wickets in the Pakistan Super League (PSL).

The four-wicket performance has him join Wahab Riaz at the top of the PSL’s all-time wicket-takers chart.

The two pacers have taken 113 wickets each in the PSL history.

However, the Karachi Kings pacer accomplished the feat in just 83 innings, four fewer innings than Wahab Riaz, who achieved the milestone in 87 innings.

Most wickets in PSL

Hasan Ali: 113 wickets in 83 innings

Wahab Riaz: 113 wickets in 87 innings

Shaheen Shah Afridi: 107 wickets in 74 innings

Shadab Khan: 96 wickets in 85 innings

Faheem Ashraf: 79 wickets in 72 innnings

Hassan Ali is having a hell of a PSL this year. His figures so far against Quetta Gladiators today. 3/3 in 1.3 overs

Warwickshire frustrated by Hassan Ali central contract

Warwickshire are seeking clarification from the Pakistan Cricket Board over the availability of pace bowler Hasan Ali.

The 30-year-old was due to play for the Bears from 29 May to the end of the season on an all-formats deal.

But he has been given a central contract by the PCB and is not now expected to be available until the T20 Blast game against Derbyshire on 8 June.

The club understands, though, that he will not be able to play in the County Championship matches against Somerset and Sussex, starting on 22 and 29 June.

He can play five more T20 matches in July but the club want to know if he will be allowed to return for the knockout pahse of the competition, should they progress from their group.

"We believed we had assurances he would not be involved with the Pakistan side this summer. But a change of management at the PCB has meant he's been given a central contract and won't be able to support us throughout the season as expected," said chief executive Stuart Cain.

"It's another example of the challenges clubs face in attracting quality overseas players.

"With the financial incentives associated with franchise cricket around the globe, and the expanded international schedule, it's very hard to find players that will both improve the squad and be available for the majority of the summer."

Warwickshire are also going to be without Australia's Beau Webster for the initial stages of the T20 Blast after he was named in their squad for the World Test Championship final against South Africa and subsequent tour to the West Indies.

"Beau has settled in well at Edgbaston, making a big difference on and off the field, but his performances over the winter for Australia always meant this was a possibility," Cain added.

Warwickshire are next in action on Friday for a Championship game against neighbours Worcestershire at New Road.

Warwickshire first-team coach Ian Westwood says the club do not intend to sign any short-term replacements for Beau Webster and Hasan Ali for the start of their T20 Blast campaign.

The Bears signed all-rounder Webster until the end of July but he will now miss the whole tournament after his call-up to the Australia squad for the World Test Championship and subsequent tour to the West Indies.

Fast bowler Ali will be unavailable for the first three Blast games after being given a central contract by the Pakistan Cricket Board.

It leaves the Bears with New Zealand captain Tom Latham as their overseas player for the opening matches.

Fast bowling experts around here...

Whats the reason for him doing well all of sudden? Change of action? Extra pace? Has had some effective coaching???

This isn’t trolling. People are genuinely happy to see him doing well.

I don’t know the full story, but here’s what I think. Hassan clearly loves the game and really wants to play for Pakistan like every other Pakistani For whatever reason, he was out of the national team for a while, and that must have been tough. But it’s clear he wants to perform, help his team win, and give his best no matter who he is playing for.

Every athlete dreams of representing their country and gaining recognition through strong performances. But sometimes things just do not work out. Your form drops, chances become rare, and you get pushed aside. Even then, you keep working hard, keep believing, and hope for another chance. When that moment finally comes, even if it is a good performance in a smaller match, it still means a lot.

That emotion is real. And people who admire his passion and effort can see that. They support him not just for what he did on the field, but for the journey behind it. I honestly believe the tweets and the reactions are sincere. They come from people who truly understand what it means to keep going.

One statement shouldn’t define a person. Hassan Ali’s performance on the field, his passion, and the way he’s fought to come back should matter more than a single quote. I don't know why this particular thread is being used to talk about Hasan Ali.

Judge him for what he does as a player, not for one headline.

Hassan Ali couldnt carry his PSL form in the Vitality Blast... he went for 0/36 in 4 overs against Yorkshire

Turned out to be a chill guy eventually. Early on I think he needlessly wasted his focus on silly celebrations and stuff like doing antics at Wagah border for attention. He had a talent for bowling and had remained focussed on his fitness and bowling he could have achieved a lot. His late outswing was devastating

Looked like a million bucks in the CT 2017.

Bowled some phenomenal spells and bowled the ball of the tournament
Pakistani fast bowlers lately have been suffering from what Indian fast bowlers used to suffer till around 2013, they come with an expiry date.

Adulteration and general lack of quality standards in Pakistani food industry is a major reason. Majority of young Pakistanis today are of short height and of docile non muscular stature. They're not at par physically speaking with Indians. Look at Harshit Rana, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul. Tall powerful lads with long handles. The improvement in food quality standards in India in the last decade has a lot to do with it. Parents have been taking extreme care of nutrition in their kids diet in the last decades as compared to back in the day.

Lol it's cute that you think that 🤣. I was 6 feet 1 and that's before I migrated to AU(coming back/relocating to lahore very soon BTW since objective of acquiring passport has now been achieved)

It has nothing to do with quality of Pakistan food and everything to do with the choices that they made.

Like seriously a country that has international brands at their disposal is somehow worse then India which doesnt even include beef in their diet? Get out of here with that nonsense.

While im critical of players and their weight and I can understand Indians admiring their quality over Pakistan, this comment was extremely racist and short sighted and very ignorant.

You belong to an affluent family. You had access to high quality nutrition. I’m talking about the masses and you know the situation.

I was born to the top 10 richest families actually.

And that's fair, you're speaking from a lower income perspective. In that case I agree.

Both india and PK are 3rd world countries but pakistan is obviously on a much lower spectrum so it makes sense as to why Pakistan is lacking behind.

However middle/top income wise, people are fine.

Also side note: I am the tallest in my family. I tower over everyone however im short for aussie standards where median height is 6'2. And all my pakistani friends are taller then me as well.

Indian metabolism isn’t ideal for digesting Beef. I too can only digest Beef easily when consuming in less amount like generally mixed in stuff like Pasta or Pizza. I can’t eat a steak with ease. My metabolism isn’t ideal for it. Indians however are making up for it by consuming more chicken and lamb etc which provide all the amino acids needed. As a result the current generation of Indian youth is at another level physically speaking. Better height, leaner body with more muscle mass than previous generations. Young Indian women also today are a different level compared to their predecessors in built. It’s just how things change when food quality and food diversity on the table gets significantly better.

It happened in China and it’s happening in India.

Having said that newly gained muscle mass is making Indians a lot more angry compared to before now that they know their punch carries extra few ounces of force. It’s a side effect that’s not ideal. More road rage, more hand to hand fighting incidents now with all this newly gained muscle. We need to find a way to control it.

In 1947, Indians had a significant Iodine deficiency and it showed in their severely malnourished and weak body frame. The nation just came out of centuries of slavery. There were kings and prices who had the best life but 99% of the people were no better than slaves. The govt had to do a massive Iodine campaign for decades and push salt makers and all to add iodine in salt to end this tragic situation.

Genetics is important but general diet also is a massive factor in people’s build and physique. Chinese and Indians have come a long way by improving their nutrition.

14 year old Vaibhav is smashing 38 ball centuries , striking at 200+. It’s the kind of specimen that come out of a system that’s able to fulfil dietary requirements of its kids.

Pakistan was far ahead of india in the 70s , 80 s up until the 90 s economically.

We all know what happened for the downward trajectory that took place after.

in indias case uncle sam and the uk came calling because they don't want Pakistan or China to be the leading power players in Asia.
