So rumours abound that Fawad Alam will replace Shadab Khan in the 2nd Test XI.

Firstly - how likely is this? Shadab did well with the bat and also contributed with the ball.

Secondly - Will Fawad Alam be suitable on this pitch?

Can they get 10-20 overs out of Fawad in the match? Southampton traditionally spins. Moeen Ali skittled India. Would be a mistake to drop Shadab

wth?what. makes no sense. Drop shafiq for fawad. Why take out another player who can actually add depth like shadab??? So stupid. I thought india was the worst when it comes to selections but I see it's just a desi thing. Go on. Keep advocating for nepotism based selections.

Very good idea.

Clearly the problem with the team is not enough guys in their thirties.

The last Inzamam/Arthur team had 8 players in their twenties.
This would restore sanity, with the Misbah/Misbah team having 1 teen, 3 guys in their twenties and 7 in their thirties.

The problem is not the guy aged 35 at Number 3 who averages 11.77 with the bat away in the last 30 months.

The real problem is the guy aged 21 who has scored 3 times as many runs at 3 times the average of the 35 year old.

Dropping 21 year old Shadab for 35 year old Fawad is a great start.

Next Pakistan must:

1. Replace the teenage Naseem Shah with the 68 year old Imran Khan (PM).
2. Replace the 20 year old Shaheen Shah Afridi with the 54 year old Wasim Akram.
3. Replace Babar Azam with
4. Replace Mohammad Rizwan with Wasim Bari, as he is only 72 years old.

I am not a fan of Fawad but he deserves his chance, lets hope he does well in the last 2 test matches.

They can replace anyone they want in the batting department, they'll all be the same!

I’m not a Shadab fan for sure, but this one is unacceptable. Shadab did bat well (scored more runs that three of the 5 specialist batsmen picked at OT) & chipped in couple of tailenders as well.

Also, I could have understood had they gone for Sohail as Shadab’s replacement, which would have made it a strong bowling attack with five specialist bowlers (four pacers & a leggi), but not sure how this one can work. PAK is trailing and no matter what, you have to take 20 wickets, therefore five bowlers does make sense. Also, this Test I think is going to be a lower scoring one, so five bowlers could be a possibility, but dropping Shadab for a 35 years old guy based on his domestic heroics few years back ........

Fawad have to score at least a big fifty (75+) in one of the two innings to justify this call, which I don’t think is going to be easy for him. And, it increases the average age (which already is alarmingly high) of the playing XI by more than a year. They could have dropped Abid, open with Azhar and play Babar at 3, Fawad at 4 and Rizwan at 5 - Asad is most confident at 6.

Not sure how I feel about Fawad selection. He hasn't done a well domestic cricket in the last couple of years. Also would prefer the number 6 to have a better shot range just incase we need quick runs to put pressure back on England.

Would rather go with Fakhar at 6 as he offers more with the ball as well.

The squad selected is atrocious by Misbah. Back up bowlers too old and poor fitness. Back up batters aren't good enough.

Would be a terrible move.
Fawad at 6 with his limited strokes and slow tempo adds nothing to the side.
Just another burden that we will have to carry.

If Fawad is going to replace anyone it should be Shafiq or Azhar Ali.
Ideallly both should go but of the two, it’s Azhar that is struggling with his technique.

Azhar is not just out of form but his technique is flawed.

Ever so undroppable Shafiq. Dropping Shadab only makes sense if he's replaced with either Kashif Bhatti or Faheem Ashraf.

Series in England, South Africa and Australia are often used to scapegoat players. Not the best time for Fawad to come in. If Fawad outscores Azhar and Asad things will get interesting. We really need to build our test team around Babar basically some young batsmen who can play and learn cricket. Our experienced batsmen aren't good enough.

Once I respected Misbah and liked him, he's absolutely a dinosaur now.

Good decision and what I would do is play fawad at 5 and Asad at 6

Look yes wicket might be spinning but shadab is not a good enough bowler in the longer formats of the game

He is a modern day attacking spinner. Anyway no one sets a ODI field to a leggie if he is attacked. It’s a well known fact that A leggie will give away runs but take wickets. A better captain would use him very wisely especially against this young English batting line up who are more vulnerable to spin.

Shadab was hardly bowled so cannot comment on his use as a bowler, but in batting he looked comfortable in both innings. With little more guidance he will do even better. Fawad unfortunately has no form in domestics or practise games in England. He will not score more runs than Shadab in tbe match and Pak will be a bowler short if they would have long inning to bowl.

Seemed likely. Fawad will bat at 5 and shield Asad at 6.

Fakhar Zaman against the Dukes ball ? Really ? You saw how he fared in South Africa.

He can't buy a run in white ball cricket so his technique will not stand up to the swinging red ball.

Fawad has been set up to fail. He should've returned in the home series against Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. Hell, he should've been playing these last 10 years ahead of Asad Shafiq, he craps all over Shafiq's FC record.

Instead he's been recalled midway through a Test tour in England, the team 1-0 down, as a Hail Mary by an incompetent coach.

Our batting needs all the help it can get - especially with Azhar and Shafiq batting like tailenders.

It's too bad we can't replace him for Azhar.

Obviously, this move should have been done in the 1st Test.

I'd like to see Imam ul Haq to come into the Team.

In this scenario as an Opener but in the future developed as a No.3 (alternatively as Azhar to open and Imam at 3)

Something to bear in mind is Asad was run out in the second Innings, prior to which he looked comfortable hence he may keep his spot.

Fawad will most likely come in for Shadab, i'm not sure how much Fawad actually bowls but with 8/9 right handers in the English team a left arm spinner could be useful.

Whilst it's true Fawad didn't light up the warmups, it's completely false that he had no form in domestic. He averaged 71 and scored four hundreds and two fifties in the QEA Trophy last winter.

Of course Misbah ignored that in favour of his two disciples Azhar and Shafiq while Fawad sat on the bench vs Sri Lanka and Bangladesh where he would've had an easier reintegration into the team.

Look everyone can see the problem is batting - we lost the Test in our 2nd innings. Pakistan, with two virtual tailenders Azhar and Shafiq and three #11s, cannot afford not to play six specialist batsmen outside Asia. If we cannot put up any runs, we are getting whitewashed 3-0. Simple.

Yeah, but surely you can also see the precarious position that puts our young bowlers in. What if England score a big one in one of the innings? Do you think Shaheen and Naseem have the experience and mental and physical toughness to go through that unscathed?

Four bowlers, two of whom are very young with virtually no test experience, could be a recipe for disaster. Hope all goes well, though. We definitely need an all rounder worth the name, and it's a testament to the utter uselessness of PCP that we haven't been able to find/nurture one in more than a decade.

Bat Fawad at 5 and move Shafiq at 6 where he averages 41 or so in contrast to his average of 31 or so at 5.

i would prefer Shadab over Fawad.

maybe fawad should replace Abid and get Azhar as opener. Or maybe get Fawad to replace Asad Shafiq, but than Shafiq does have decent performance in australia.

Hard call

Win win situation for Misbah. If Fawad fail he will justify the selection of Iftikhar, if successful he will take the credit.
Misbah and Azhar are against young players. Both Azhar and Shafiq felt incompetent after seeing Sadab's batting. Batting alone Sadab can replace any of Shafiq or Azhar.

If Fawad is getting his chance than he should show a decent performance. If he isn't good enough than should be dropped.

Fans used to whine that Fawad doesn't get a chance(which they were right), now when he is getting a chance now people saying its a set up.

Even before he will bat the blame will be put on the coach. Even his fans dont feel confident that he should play

And that's exactly why Misbah is such an incompetent coach - why are we already putting the burden of winning a Test series in England on the shoulders of two teenage fast bowlers ?

Neither have played even 10 Tests in their career. Ideally only one of Shaheen and Naseem should be playing - but Misbah's bowlers are either budday or bachay. He has totally ignored seamers between age of 20-30 like Ehsan Adil who's in good domestic form.

How can you justify dropping Shadab? He contributed with vital runs and was severely underbowled!

Fawad definitely cannot chip in the same amount when it comes to bowling and no one knows how his batting is going to hold up. Poor decision if true.

I think one spinner is enough in England. So, not a bad decision.

Fawad is a better batsman than Shadab and he can bowl too.

Poor decision. It is Faheem Ashraf who should be in. You need 4 pace options in SENA and a spinner, not 2 spinners and 3 pacers, the pacers will still be overloaded. I would rather you have 4 pace options and a spinner so that they can keep coming back with full force in every spell.

1. Shan
2. Abid Ali
3. Azhar
4. Babar
5. Fawad
6. Rizwan
7. Shadab
8. Yasir
9. Shaheen
10. Abbas
11. Sohail

Would be a bad move IMO. Shadab averages 37 in SENA conditions(since January 2018), the 3rd best in our team after Babar and Shan. Fawad should come in for Asad Shafiq, who's averaging 30 in SENA in the same time period.

I like Misbah as a person because I think he is a hardworker and someone who doesn't get flustered too much. But, I don't think he's capable enough to be in the position that he has been given. He should be a trainer for the team and the thinking part should be outsourced to someone else.

Time for cricket to have football style managers working with an underlying framework of day to day skill coaches with a clear cut split between strategic/execution management.

He doesn't even have any knowhow about training
He and Waqar are notorious for the one size fits all approach where they run everybody into the ground.
They fail to recognise the individual approach and generalise their own experiences to fit everyone.
One of the biggest examples was irfan who was made to runs laps over laps, leading to a lot of muscle wastage which made him lose strength and pace, and ultimately got him injured.

Shadab was lucky just like woakes..he isnt a batsman and didnt bowl enuff..id anybody he can replace is yasir but that will not happen so i think this is the right move and should have been done in the first match..england also are bringing in a batter crawley n playing 4 bowlers

Shouldn't Asad Shafiq be the player kicked out for Fawad Alam?

Asad just needs 16 more matches and then he will be in the elite list of top 10 players with most matches without being dropped. He will be joining the greats like Alastair Cook, Mark Waugh, Adam Ghilcrist, Rahul Dravid, ABD etc. So maybe thats the target to let Asad join the list where he belongs. :asad1

Look at who is selector / coach, he has a habit of putting younger players on the chopping block- even if it makes absolutely no sense as in this case.

I don’t mind Fawad playing- but on a pitch that may very well spin why would you go in one with one leggie only...

What was the point of playing Shadab when he barely bowled in the first place? Fawad could have sent down the same amount of overs in the first game too. But let's hope he gets his shot now. Ludicrous to even think how long he has waited.

What the hell with the people who advocating Shadab Khan who is not more than a **** as a test and odi player. yes he is more than a decent t20 player. yet he is rubbish for test. i would never mind a 35 year old player playing and may win his team rather than a bunker

If this was first Test, I could have understood. But, as it looks Shadab is dropped as a result of the loss, where he was one of the better performers.

I am no Fakhar fan I can assure you. Would rather try something outside of box.

Bad decision to get rid of Shadab,
Fawad should replace Abid Ali, Azhar Ali or Yasir Shah (unless Yasir has learned a proper googly from mushy!)

It's definitely harsh on Shadab, after he produced a good all-rounder performance last match. Fawad has to replace Asad at that #5 spot, it's a no-brainer in my opinion.

I back shadab to make more runs than Azhar Abid Asad and fawad, so this will be a mistake

Rubbish decision, why not replace Shafiq? Why not drop Azhar as well?

I feel most likely they will play 3 openers, which Imam coming at #3. Don't see Fawad coming into the team. One of the sucky players like Asad or Azhar has to go in order to accommodate Fawad.

Or replace Asad Shafiq with Fawad!

LoL, that will be the day...
Asad Shafiq is the Reason Fawad never had a career. Misbah kept Fawad away from the side. so Asad can play uncontested, it was a bad choice. Asad Shafiq has been an under performer from the start.
However I think an inconsequential big score by Asad is just around the corner, after which he will secure his place for the next couple of series and fan torture will continue.

Rubbish decision, why not replace Shafiq? Why not drop Azhar as well?

Can’t drop Azhar obv even if that is correct decision. Mid series dropping of captain doesn’t even happen in Australia or England.

Shafiq needs to go.

That's a good one. It would make it all easier for Azhar, Asad. Imam will probably manage to soften the new ball.

Would be a tragedy for Fawad, but an intelligent move from Pak to get Azhar, Asad going.

Why would they drop Shafiq? They thought he was set and ready to go big before he was run out.

No way Misbah is dropping his pal.

Is this real?

What a joke, a guy with a 38 average.

2. Replace the 20 year old Shaheen Shah Afridi with the 54 year old Wasim Akram.
3. Replace Babar Azam with
4. Replace Mohammad Rizwan with Wasim Bari, as he is only 72 years old.

Absolutely Hillarious

I'm not a fan of Shadab in Test cricket but the correct decision based on performances would be to drop Asad. As a specialist weak captain we know Azhar will play regardless of inability to bat, bowl or field which unfortunately the other incompetent senior player Asad must be dropped!

Completely agreed with this.

Shadab contributed more in the first match than both Azhar and Asad combined and poor lad gets dropped while they keep their places in the team still

So look almost a given that Fawad will play

1. Who will he replace?
2. How will he do!?

Shadab. And let's hope for his sake that he does well. Certainly wont be easy making a comeback against a tough bowling attack in challenging conditions.

Acid test for Fawad. Not so easy to come in and start scoring runs immediately, especially against a strong English attack in favorable conditions. Hoping for the best. I'm sure the same posters who wanted him here will call for his head if he fails. Such fickle fans we have.

He should be replacing Shafiq but it looks like incompetent management will drop Shadab for Fawad.

Regardless, I feel Fawad will definitely struggle against the quicker men. He's too old and hasn't played a top-quality test attack for a long long while. I have very low confidence in his ability to face the 2nd new ball as well. Let's see. He deserves a chance but at the expense of Shafiq, not Shadab.

Fawad Alam has been confirmed as selected for the number 6 spot, his first Test in 10+ years.

Don't mind the Fawad pick but replacing the wrong guy.
