Fawad Alam - Support Thread

So what if he has a hundred? Ideally, one of them should have averaged 50 by now, so that after Younus Khan's retirement (probably this year), one of them should have filled his boots, but that's not the case, both of them average under 45, and Younus Khan's void may be there for some years to come, so overall they haven't turned out to be good investments.

Younis and Yousuf had similiar averages at the same stage of their careers.
It's okay to support Fawad, but saying that PCB should have invested in him instead of Azhar & Asad is wrong as they have done very well.

Fawad might have scored truckload of runs in domestic cricket and also done well at the international level, but most often it is not how many you score but rather, 'when' you score.

There are good times to score and then there are not-so-good times to score.

Right before the 2011 World Cup, he cost Pakistan two matches with his poor striking ability in the ODI series vs SA in UAE, which cost him a place in the World Cup squad.

Fastforward 4 years, and he failed miserably vs Australia in the ODI series in the UAE, which again, cost him a place in the World Cup squad.

After the World Cup, with Misbah and Younis out of the way and Umar dropped, he got another opportunity to cement himself in the team in the new-look Pakistan squad with a new captain at the helm, but once again, he failed miserably which paved way for Malik to return who grabbed the opportunity with both hands and hasn't looked back since.

The only time you can say that Fawad timed his run scoring well was in the 2014 Asia Cup, where he got an opportunity after 3 years and took it in some fashion. However, of course, all of that was undone by his performance vs Australia just before the World Cup.

Pretty sure we lost three matches in that SA series. One was due to a collapse, and in one Alam did not play, as he was replaced by Mohammad Yousuf.

I don't think Alam was responsible for the 3rd ODI loss tbh. It was a decent innings, but he couldn't finish it off. Besides, he had played some good innings vs England earlier in the year and was our leading run scorer in ODIs in 2010. Not selecting him even in the 30 man probables after that was quite unjust.

As I said, don't think Alam fits in our ODI plans any more, but he was definitely treated poorly between 2010-2015, when he should have played a lot more games IMO.

Younis and Yousuf had similiar averages at the same stage of their careers.
It's okay to support Fawad, but saying that PCB should have invested in him instead of Azhar & Asad is wrong as they have done very well.

They are not at the level of Younus and Yousuf, and never will be. At least one of them should have averaged 50 by now, but that's not the case, so I think not good investments.

^in pakistan no current player can be like previous players, just like how previous players could not become like their predecessors.

Shafiq and Azhar cannot become Yousuf and YK, while Yousuf and YK or Inzi could never become Miandad or Shoaib or Zaheer.

Isnt this so clear ? What other countries do is groom each generation of players so their potential could be relevant cricket being played at the time. We don't do that hence were in a decline.

"lets see where they stand", or "they can average 50 or this or that", or "what their leve is" is competely wastefull argument since our players are in a decline - they are not being groomed, so how can you compare anyone with anyone ? whats the point ?

WE need players like him the team, the ones that can stay there and know how to graft a big innings and get the big runs.

The guy made 168 on debut, it took years for Azhar to make more than that and Asad still has not gotten past 150 in tests.

Need him in the team

I still can't believe how PCB have treated him, he's still only 30, PCB please consider him for national team

Should be replaced for YK or at least when Misbah retires.

You don't average mid to high 50s when everyone else is virtually averaging 30 - 45 for nothing.

I believe the main reason why he has been mistreated is because he isn't aesthetically pleasing to watch and in the process has become an easy target for the likes of Misbah and selectors.

Should also have played in the WC IN AUS/NZ.

Misbah doesn't look so pretty himself but he digs in and gets runs, I see Fawad as a similar player. Main reason he has been kept out is due to YK and Misbah, once one of them or both leave surely he will be selected. Chanderpaul is another guy who doesn't look so good at the crease but he gets runs, fawad technique is similar to his and at best he's the sought of player which Alam can become.

So it's that time of the year again....

Short answer is that Fawad is not good enough for overseas Tests. He is a technical failure, and yes technique is not everything, but you need the right basics to build on and he doesn't have the right basics.

Before someone says that how do we know when he hasn't played etc. etc., well the same way some of us knew that Younis will fail badly on this tour, given the way he was jumping around in the UAE against the English pacers, and the way he was made to look like a tailender at the World Cup.

Fawad is a grinder and he will do well in the UAE/Asia, but better to invest in players like Babar and Haris who can do well both in Asia and overseas.

After the England series, would be a good immediate replacement for Younus (even though he's not as dynamic or as strong vs spin) because he can score big hundreds and has the temperament to bat for hours at the crease.

If you notice he has the same technique to Chanderpaul and he went out and scored runs everywhere, so how can you write him off when he hasn't been tried and tested.

As I mentioned earlier, you don't average mid 50's in FC (when his compatriots are all 30-45)for nothing and sticking to technical analysis Misbah doesn't have a solid technique against pace but still averages around 50 in England.

We need someone like Fawad Alam because he has the right composure to occupy the crease for hours. Once he gets in, he's very capable of scoring big hundreds.

Fair to say that Babar Azam will get a look at given that he's a more complete player, I'd say Azam direct replacement of YK and Fawad a direct replacement for Misbah. There's a good chance that both Misbah and YK will be playing until the tour of AUS.

Fawad Alam has no place in today's cricket, feel sad for him but that's the reality.

I think like Pakistani selectors many Pakistani fans also failed to pick up their best players in business.

I clearly remember many posters were saying that Sami had technical issues in his game which were enough not to warrant a place in Pakistan team. And now.....

Fawad is another guy about whom the same group of people possess wrong conception. If he is given chance i am sure he will prove these people wrong again. But one thing...He should be given a full test series to prove his worth.

He is thirty he should have been playing for the last ten years.....I guess he is not in the clique!

So sad.....is he better then Hafeez as opener....is he better then Shafiq.....
is he better then Shan Masood.....I would say to yes to all these questions.

So the question has to be asked why has he not been given chance....another one who wasn't given chance was Asim Kamal.

If imagination is a better judgemental tool in Pakistan (Fawad won't do well outside UAE without giving him chance) than amazingly good domestic stats then what can i say?

I have heard that Inzi wanted Butt and Asif back if this is true then he should be sacked.....hasn't the team got enough problems.......Fawad should be given chance first.

Fawad Alam was only the 22nd highest scoring Batsman in the recent First Class season.

Please no. I understand the despair, but fawad Alam is not the answer to any of our questions

A man in his thirties, with a strange, homespun technique, whose domestic record shows clear signs of major decline.

Message to chief selectors:

If you pick squad for Australian test series based on nepotism and favouritism then you will be sacked in Naya Pakistan immediately.

We are out for blood after Asia cup defeat and your removal will be guaranteed if you don't pick Fawad Alam.

and here is another Ton by Fawad
definitely should be given chance against Srilanka .

Any body knows: how many runs Fawad needs to select ? (Already reached 12000)
or
century?(Already reached 34)

Suddenly with the Full Internationals and Emerging Players out, Fawad starts to score runs!

I don't think Southern Punjab are missing any of their bowlers. Though Rahat Ali isn't playing for some reason, perhaps injured.

we should complain on the citizen portal app of the great nepotism and injustice that is fawad alam's continued non selection despite repeated **** poor performances by our batsmen.

enough complaints and maybe something might happen?

Its a shame...!
Ive been following cricket before Fawad was born....I've seen too many lesser players who have played ahead of him.
I will never understand why him and Sadaf weren't given their proper dues.

I think Younis’ 218 smacked you in the face then.

Class players always come back. It’s in their nature. So is Fawad.

It is baffling that Fawad has been written off and not given his fair share of chances. When he’s given chances, he has done well.

There’s prejudice there.

Blessing in disguise that he was never selected for the AUS Tour.

He must most definitely be selected for the SL series. What a story it would be, dropped unfairly in test after 160 on debut v SL, and could make a comeback against the same country, in the same format.

He must be used in the longer format as a test specialist. Him and Sami Aslam “deserve” a run in the longer format.

Younis failed miserably in 6 out of the 7 innings that he played in that series. The only thing he smacked was the chances of Pakistan winning that series. That series victory was there for the taking, but Younis went completely missing in the two defeats at Old Trafford and Edgbaston, while his teammates carried him to a win at Lord’s.

As far as Fawad is concerned, I don’t wish to speak about him anymore.

The selectors would rather pick mediocre but aesthetically pleasing batsmen (Asad Shafiq) than someone who has a FC average of 55 but an unorthodox technique.

such a powerful graphic!

There is still hope for Fawad, particularly for the SL series coming up. Haris has looked totally out of place on this tour, Ifti chacha has done nothing, and there is no reason to select 4 openers - one of them should be replaced by a middle order bat.

To add, there has never been a Pakistani selector so open to selecting older players as Misbah.

Just need public pressure to build on Misbah, timing from Fawad is perfect! hope to see Fawad against SL

Once again he scores big- something we are lacking big time.

He should be picked as a short term option for the WTC and the series at home vs Sri Lanka is a perfect opportunity to recall Fawad.

If Steve Smith was a Pakistani, he would never have been selected because he too bats ugly. What a joke - Fawad should have been a leading Pakistani international. How cruel is this game.

Should have been given a long rope. It will restore faith in first class system for other players. But i guess T20 leagues somewhat have taken over.

Yes yes we know you pick and choose on what you would like to talk about and twist and turn things.

Do what you want, but then have the decency to accept when you’re wrong.

Thanks.

He must have done something to upset everyone.

How can a player this good not have played more for Pakistan.

He was not a T20 player but for longer formats, not a bowler just a batsman.

Something really wrong that he missed out so many times when his replacements were basically rubbish.

He couldn't get in the team ahead of U Akmal.... nothing more to be said.

Not sure why you are upset. You picked up a fight out of nowhere and then I showed you the facts.

It is a fact that Younis failed in 6 out of 7 innings and it is a fact that he contributed heavily to the Old Trafford and Edgbaston defeats. It also a fact that he contributed nothing to the Lord’s win.

You are the one who seems to lack the decency to accept that you were wrong. If you want to pick up a fight you need to come up with better material. I will accept when I am wrong and I have been wrong so many times. However, do your homework first before calling me out.

There was absolutely no reason to bring Younis to this thread and use words like “he smacked you in the face” etc.

With all due respect, Fawad has been exposed numerous times on the international circuit for him to do much again. It's not that he has just failed, he has been exposed brutally by international cricketers. Bond, Swann, Australia's pace attack and Arafat Sunny

Let's just celebrate a fantastic domestic cricketer with a particular skill-set, and leave him be. With Haris Sohail coming in, Fawad's time is up.

In our part of world, personal relationships matter a lot in professional life. Fawad seems like such a nice guy, honest trier and desperate to do well. Guys like him get trampled on and denied what they deserve not just in sports but in any profession. Its unfortunate that T20 hacks like Fakhar, Ifthikar can make it to Pakistan test team but he can't. Fawad reminds me of Indian domestic legend Amol Majumdar. His peak coincided with Sachin etc and he unfortunately never got the opportunity to play for India. Kuch logo ki kismat hi kharab hoti hai.

wow. darren lehmann really underachieved in tests despite such a high fc average

The first name on this list was a gorgeous gorgeous batsman and just like Fawad Alam, never got reasonable chances to play for India. He got so frustrated that he ending up becoming a match fixers agent. It's not justified but it's understandable.

that is a bradmanesque, steve smith average. had worse luck than vinod kambli. so many unlucky cricketers.

Fawad deserves selection for Sri Lanka series since that’s in Pakistan and that’s where he’s scored all his runs

OnThisDay in 2009, Fawad Alam became the tenth Pakistan batsman to score a Hundred on Test debut.

He was also the first player to do it away from home, but managed to play two more Tests for the Flag of Pakistan only

Should he be part of the playing lineup?

why did he not play? seems his peak was late 80s; early 90s which was when the indian batting wasnt pulling any trees.. @J@ADED

Hockey full back gonna get exposed

Even if he gets exposed the chance should have been given years ago in order for In close the book.

I mean I get it when the batting stocks are filled And performing that you’re unable to give chances but we’ve had openings here and there for a while.

Humble request to PCB, Pakistan team management :-

Please, Khhuda ka khhauf karein aur Fawad ko khilayein.

Selectors have finally done their job.

Do not waste his selection (twice) by keeping him on the bench.

As badly as Fawad has been treated, I feel it's pointless to bring back a player of his age. That said Azhar, after being abysmal for 3 years, is captain and yet Fawad can't get a game is a complete joke.

Ideally though we should invest in someone younger who can serve the team for longer.

If they arr not gonna bowl shadab in next game than i hope the give fawad the chance. The guy has waited for it for quite some time.

Ideally i would keep shadab and drop asad for fawad. But asad didnt bat to bad in second innings.

Harris is not here, lets see if fawad alam gets his chance or not

Khuda ke waaste iss ko khilana instead of Shafiq in the next match!

what does he need to do to get a game in a failing batting order like this?

Listen he may not set the world on fire but he deserves a fair chance and a run of matches like the favoured ones have had over the last decade

How is this acceptable?

Despite all the calls about unjustice against him, I cant find any sympathy for him because of how much I hate his batting style.

He also serves no value at no. 6 because he cant play at a faster tempo, which is a requirement at that position.

he averages 50 plus in domestic. Shafiq is no where near as good iirc. Give him a chance atleast now.
