If there can be a stadium in the name of IAS Bindra, MA Chidambram, SK Wankhede, M Chinnaswamy, then why not Jaitley.

Because it’s been called it’s current name for such a long time. It literally is a “Kotla” for Team India.

I doubt Jaitley would even want this, he was a humble down to earth man who never sought the limelight.

Fortress Feroz Shah Kotla to be renamed after hindu leader Arun Jaitley

Modi at it again.

Why are we obsessed with renaming monuments of mugh era

BJP is just like Congress, naming stuff after their leaders (cricket associations toe the line of ruling powers, make no mistake). Only grace is they haven't been for much long, otherwise there would be many more like the 1000s of Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi stadiums/roads/parks. Sadly this is a sickness that won't go away any soon, every party does it. We should name our stadiums after great sportsmen or something famous in those places.

As per reports I think the ground will continue to be called Feroz Shah Kotla, stadium after Arun Jaitley.

Modi at it again.

Feroz Shah Tughluq, not a Mughal. He was a Turkic ruler of 14th century. Mughal era started in 1526 and they were of Central Asian origin.

I always liked the term 'Fortress Kotla', Arun Jaitley doesn't have the same zing.

what would changing the name serve or make it better?, other than creating and solidify the doubts about BJP government?

The ground belongs to DDCA and Jaitley was its president. A number of grounds in India are named after the President of tge association that owns it

Of course Jaitley should be honoured by his friends/associates but renaming a whole stadium like that? Why not a stand or an end of the ground etc? I feel that in these BJP days, far too many decisions being taken to put down Muslim heritage.

Wankhede,Chinnaswamy,Chidambaram,Bindra all are stadiums named after their respective association president.

Jaitley in addition to being DDCA president, one of Indias legal luminaries and a former Finance minister. So there is nothing wrong in the stadium being named after him.

The original fortress still exists and is some way from the stadium.

Why not rename Lord's to Sir Winston Churchill stadium?

This is ridiculous. Feroz Shah Kotla is an awesome name and sounds catchy too, if you ask me.

I could be wrong but wasn't DDCA mired in corruption allegations under Jaitley as president?

This ain't even about the BJP guy tbh.
They just want to remove any of signs of the Muslim heritage.

Which of those stadiums had their name changed from one man's to another's? Get your head out of the sand

The existing name sounded much better tbh.

Arun Jaitley never had people's mandate, he never won a popular election in 45 years. He was defeated by a margin of more than one lakh (hundred thousand) votes in his own birthplace by an outsider. He never strongly criticized Gandhi's, was content with his luxury cars and watches.

Naming a stadium after him is so bizzare.

If you can rename Madras, Bombay, Bangalore, Calcutta, Cochin, trivandrum etc etc this is nothing. Who cares.

Yeah.

DDCA was mired in corruption under Jaitley.

True. Also, DDCA under him was so corrupt, it doesn't make sense to name an entire ground after him.

True.

I can bet had it been named after a Hindu, it won't have been changed.

what would changing the name serve or make it better?, other than creating and solidify the doubts about BJP government?
Because BJP is world champion in changing names.

So another Muslim name is being Hindunised in the pretence of a tribute being made to a deceased person.

Pakistan went through a similar phase in the 90s.

Some examples from Lahore:
Sant Nagar renamed to Sunnat Nagar.
Krishan Nagar renamed to Islampura.
Nehru Park renamed to Afghan Park.
Lawrence Gardens renamed to Bagh-e-Jinnah.

The funny part is that people still refer to those places by their old names.

Yes, keep doing these cosmetic changes of name changing cities, stadiums, mithai wale ki dukaan and streets. It’s not like there are any serious problems to address in a first world country like India.

The Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA) unveiled a stand named after former India opener Gautam Gambhir at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on Tuesday. Cricketer turned politician Gautam Gambhir was present during the occasion as he shared his pictures from the unveiling ceremony on Twitter. "Arun Jaitley Ji was like a father figure to me and it is a matter of great pride and pleasure to have a stand built in my name at the "Arun Jaitley Stadium". I thank the apex council, my fans, friends, and family who supported me at every step," Gautam Gambhir tweeted along with some of the pictures from the unveiling ceremony.

Gambhir represented Delhi on the domestic circuit from 1999-2018. He played 198 first-class matches, 299 List A matches and 251 T20s. The top-order batsman scored 15153 runs in the first-class format and 10077 runs in the List A.

Gambhir, 38, was unbeaten on 130 runs for Delhi during the Ranji Trophy 2007-08 final against Uttar Pradesh to help his side clinch victory by nine wickets. Besides that, Gambhir represented the Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

His knock of 97 runs in the World Cup 2011 final against Sri Lanka will forever be etched in the minds of Indian cricket fans.

Gambhir along side his fellow Delhi opening partner Virender Sehwag also gave India strong starts on plenty of occasions.

He was awarded the ICC Test Player of the Year in 2009. Gambhir retired in 2018 after scoring 10324 international runs.

In September, a stand at the Arun Jaitely Stadium, was named after India captain Virat Kohli.

lol, a stand named after Gambhir....

Sehwag was much more qualified to have a stand named after him in Kotla. Even Ishant has far better credentials than that sook.

BJP has taken hero worship of nobodies to the next level where even Congress hadn't dared to venture.

No muslim names should be associated with india.
They are not worthy!
Rename all towns, villages, buildings, sporting arena etc with hindu names , thank you!

What a sook,

He also questioned president Sharma for the delay in naming the North Stand after him.

"I think the president can answer this question better because earlier I was told that stand will be unveiled during the India versus Australia game (in March), then they said it will be the first game of the IPL, they they said the hot weather (local tournament). This was what was told to me in the last six to seven months," Gambhir said in response to a PTI query.

Biggest ever sook and crybaby of Indian cricket....

I guess the day is not that far when certain nation will be renamed as Greater Pakistan. :jf

Kidding aside, politics is bad idea especially when it comes to the sport. It sends the wrong message to the already marginalized community.

Highest scorer in two ICC finals, both of which India won.

Highest run scorer in Indias only test series win in NZ.

Thats more qualification than most.

Sehwag has a gate named after him at the stadium.

Congress has named roads stadiums airports anything they could get their hands on, after the family.

Still not enough to have a stand named after him of such an iconic and historic stadium. However, this still pales in front of what the ruling dispensation has done regarding naming this stadium after Jaitley....

As for Sehwag, well considering the weight of his cricketing achievements over this sook, well a gate being named after him is nothing.

And what do you have to say about this?

lol, no wonder he hopped over to a party led by megalomaniacs. All he cares about him and him alone, and I forgot, Jalebis and Poha.....

There are stands named after lesser players.

Why cant the stadium be named after Jaitley? Stadiums are named after Wankhede,Chidambaram,Chinnaswamy,Bindra and others?

As already stated above, DDCA was mired in corruption under him so isn't it extremey poor to have that association's showpiece stadium named after him?

Wankhede - Well, the stadium was built under his leadership of BCA, so no surprises there.

Chidambaram - Same as above, he was instrumental in having this stadium built at Chepauk.

Bindra - Well, do I have to say anything about a man called I S Bindra and his achievements? He has so many cricket admin achievements under his belt, far more than all BJP sports admins combined.

Now keep your saffron tinted glasses away and tell me what are Jaitley's achievements in cricket administration as compared to the giants you mentioned above?

All these have done so much for cricket in India unlike your mota bhais & sons, event manager, Thakurs, Jaitleys etc.

Can you show me the proof of Jaitley being involved in corruption in Ddca?

Wankhede Chidambaram Chinnaswamy all were politicians, Jaitley too.

Jaitley was the guy who changed the run down poor stadium to a modern one. The entire renovation and reconstruction of the stadium was done under Jaitley.

Telling lies are second nature to some.
As is running away from threads when they can no longer defend their misinformation.

Laughable that Sehwag has a gate named after him and someone nobody will remember after 5 years gets a stand.

No muslim names should be associated with india.
They are not worthy!

I think they should do the same with the public as well. That way if India needs to name stands or stadiums after future Muslim stars, the names will be Hindu anyway!

I am not you that i lie and run away.

The main entrance to kotla is named after Sehwag as virender sehwag gate.

Someone who is the highest scorer in two ICC finals is worth remembering many times.

Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) officials engaged in a fist fight during the state cricket body's annual general meeting on Sunday. Former India batsman Gautam Gambhir tweeted a video in which some officials of the DDCA can be seen exchanging blows on stage. Gautam Gambhir requested BCCI president Sourav Ganguly and board secretary Jay Shah to dissolve the state unit with immediate effect, demanding a life ban for those involved in the fight. "DDCA GOES 'ALL OUT'... AND DDCA IS ALL OUT FOR A SHAMEFUL DUCK. Look, how handful of crooks are making mockery of an institution. I'd urge bcci @SGanguly99 @JayShah to dissolve @delhi_cricket immediately. Surely, sanctions or even a life ban for those involved," the former India opener captioned the video on Twitter.

In the 43-second-long video, a man can be seen charging towards another with his fist raised before some men intervened to separate the two. However, the situation got out of control after most of the men started exchanging blows on the stage.

According to news agency IANS, DDCA joint secretary Rajan Manchanda is among those who can be seen in the melee which reportedly arose after the members could not agree on the agenda passed at the meeting.

The DDCA posted a statement on its official Twitter handle, without mentioning the fracas at the AGM.

"Thank you members. The Board of Directors of the DDCA extends its sincere gratitude and thanks all its esteemed members for having attended the AGM of the Company on a chilly and cold Sunday morning and having extended their wholehearted support and backing the Board's vision and endeavour to take the Company to greater heights. Warmest regards," the DDCA stated.

The DDCA named Justice Deepak Verma as Ombudsman and announced that the president of the association will be elected by January 13.

"We had five points. All were adopted. Yes we had a few debates, but nothing worth mentioning," DDCA director Sanjay Bhardwaj told IANS.

It was a fractious AGM where lot of chaos took centrestage. Joint secretary Rajan Manchanda was allegedly manhandled by Apex Council members.

The agenda was also supposedly forced through despite dissent according to sources.

While the first two points on the agenda were accounts related, the third had re-appointment of two directors. In the fifth point, the appointment of new Ombudsman was chartered with Justice Deepak Verma tasked to do the job.

Why not rename “India” and “Hindustan”, it’s a name given by outsiders .

Never had it happened before in Feroze Shah Kotla's history that the iconic stadium was used to house migrant labour, but the COVID-19 crisis has forced it into becoming one now.

For the last three days, the stadium was used to test and house migrant labour from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Madhya Prdesh before being sent to bus and railway stations to get back home, according to a report in Hindustan Times.

The ground was also santised on Tuesday after about 2000-2500 migrants left for respective destinations.

“We have been told that there could be more labour that will housed here in the coming days,” said DDCA joint secretary Rajan Manchanda.

“We were given a notice of 15 minutes by the Delhi government and the Delhi Disaster Management Authority the day before. They brought in beds, everything.

"They were being brought in twice a day. On the first day, we got 10 buses, carrying 500 people in the morning. Again, 10 more came in the evening, returning with the first one. Our entire staff was put on duty – electricians, plumbers etc.”

The DDCA had already informed the government about their readiness to use the stadium for quarantine and also Rs 5 lakh to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund as well as Rs 11 lakh to the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund.

“The SDM had taken note of it on April 10 and put this in the list of places that could be used for contingency.”

However, the authorities had kept the dressing rooms and grounds out of bounds for the migrants, giving them space around the nets.

Jaitley ji was a statesman and an eminent personality. He was genuine, articulate, great oratory skills and a man of immense knowledge. BJP will never get a leader like him. The way he used to tear apart congress as leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha was amazing. Oppostion needs a leader like him today to question BJP. Jaitley Ji's death was like a personal loss for me, I was that much upset.

Bishan Singh Bedi Quits Delhi Cricket Body Over Arun Jaitley Statue At Stadium

Slamming the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) for deciding to install a statue of its former President Arun Jaitley at the Feroz Shah Kotla ground, spin legend Bishan Singh Bedi has asked the body to remove his name from the spectators' stand, named after him in 2017. Lashing out at the DDCA culture, which he alleged promotes nepotism and puts "administrators ahead of cricketers", Bedi also renounced his membership of the body. He made the demand in a scathing letter addressed to DDCA President Rohan Jaitley, the son of the late politician Arun Jaitley, who was a minister in the BJP-led NDA government and died last year owing to multiple health issues.

I pride myself as a man of immense tolerance and patience...but all that I'm afraid, is running out. DDCA has truly tested me and forced me to take this drastic action," Bedi wrote in his letter.

"So, Mr President I request you to remove my name from the stand named after me with immediate effect. Also, I hereby renounce my DDCA membership," Bedi wrote in his letter.

Jaitley was DDCA president for 14 years, from 1999 to 2013, before quitting cricket administration. The body plans to have a six-foot statue of him installed at the Kotla to honour his memory.

DDCA had named one of the stands after Bedi in November 2017 along with Mohinder Amarnath.

"I've taken this decision with sufficient deliberations. I'm not prone to disregard the honour that was bestowed upon me. But as we all know with honour comes responsibility. They feted me for the total respect and integrity with which I played the game," Bedi wrote.

"And now I'm returning the honour just to assure them all that four decades after my retirement, I still retain those values."

Putting his decision in context, Bedi wrote that he was never a fan of Arun Jaitley's working style and always opposed any decision that he did not agree with.

"My reservations about the choice of people he hand-picked to run the day to day affairs of DDCA is well known. I remember walking out from a meeting at his residence whence he was unable to throw out a rowdy element using terribly foul language," Bedi wrote.

"I think I was too head strong..too Old school..& too proud an Indian cricketer to be co-opted into the corrupt darbar of sycophants Arun Jaitley mustered at the Kotla during his stewardship."

Bedi said it pains him that even the current leadership follows the culture of "fawning obeisance".

"After the Feroze Shah Kotla was named hurriedly & most undeservingly after Late Arun Jaitley my reaction then was maybe somehow good sense might prevail to keep Kotla sacrosanct," he wrote.

"How wrong I was. Now I gather a statue of Late Arun Jaitley is going to be installed at the Kotla. I'm not at all enamoured with the thought of a statue of Arun Jaitley coming up at Kotla."

Bedi said since the late administrator was primarily a politician, it's the Parliament which needs to "remember him for posterity."

"This is not a rhetorical assessment but a factual appraisal of his time at DDCA. Take my word, failures don't need to be celebrated with plaques & busts. They need to be forgotten," he wrote.

Citing examples of how great cricketers were honoured in in other countries, Bedi said, "People who surround you presently will never inform you that it's WG Grace at Lord's..Sir Jack Hobbs at the Oval..Sir Donald Bradman at the SCG...Sir Garfield Sobers at Barbados & Shane Warne of recent vintage at the MCG...who adorn their cricket stadia with the Spirit of Cricket never out of place.

"...Sporting arenas need sporting role models. The place of the administrators is in their glass cabins.

This is taking personality cult to next level! Erecting statue of Jaitley at Kotla? For what? For him being one of the most corrupt cricket administrators ever?

And I see his son being current prez of DDCA! No wonder Delhi cricket is down in dumps ever since these Jaitleys took over Delhi cricket.

Having many statues of mohandas, prime roads named after him, and public holiday on his day of birth is personality cult according to you?

Did not Mohandas created India?

no. Till the age of 60 he did't want freedom. Just wanted autonomy. He was the farooq abdullah of his time. Maybe kashmiris, if and when they get their own country, will call abdullah father of their nation.

Good move, this will definitely make India seem like an alpha because they are showing that they are not prisoners to their past rulers who have been dead for a couple hundred years.

The full text of Bishan Singh Bedi's email to DDCA president Rohan Jaitley.

I write this letter with a heavy heart & a deep sense of embarrassment. I’m old enough to know that one doesn’t talk ill of the dead. And I hope you are also old enough to be in the know of my personal relationship with Late Arun Jaitley was never quite on the same page.

Let’s say we weren’t really cricketing buddies when he was the President of DDCA. My reservations about the choice of people he handpicked to run the day to day affairs of DDCA is well known. I remember walking out from a meeting at his residence when he was unable to throw out a rowdy element using terribly foul language. I think I was too headstrong ... too old school ... & too proud an Indian cricketer to be co-opted into the corrupt darbar of sycophants Arun Jaitley mustered at the Kotla during his stewardship.

It pains me no end to point out the far from flattering facts about DDCA’s unsavoury past, but trust me it has a context. I was not raised to carry on the fight to the next generation. But I was also taught that if I firmly believe in taking a stand I must stick with it.

But sadly this is how it has unfolded. Keep in mind, these are the ills of nepotism-you get blamed for decisions you weren’t part of and you can’t even give the excuse of absence. As I observe now even in your leadership DDCA’s court culture of fawning obeisance continues.

After the Feroze Shah Kotla was named hurriedly & most undeservingly after Late Arun Jaitley my reaction then was maybe somehow good sense might prevail to keep Kotla sacrosanct. How wrong I was.

Now I gather a statue of Late Arun Jaitley is going to be installed at the Kotla. I’m not at all enamoured with the thought of a statue of Arun Jaitley coming up at Kotla. I pride myself as a man of immense tolerance & patience ... but all that I’m afraid is running out. DDCA has truly tested me & forced me to take this drastic action. So, Mr President, I request you to remove my name from the stand named after me with immediate effect.

Also, I hereby renounce my DDCA membership. I’ve taken this decision with sufficient deliberations. I’m not prone to disregard the honour that was bestowed upon me. My gratitude to Justice Sen & the Committee of M/s Dr ND Puri, Dr Ravi Chaturvedi, Vijay Lokapally & Neeru Bhatia ... all people of social & professional eminence, who extended the warm gesture to Mohinder Amarnath & me, will never fade.

But as we all know with honour comes responsibility. They feted me for the total respect & integrity with which I played the game. And now I’m returning the honour just to assure them all that four decades after my retirement, I still retain those values.

A mere Google search would have helped to know that Late Arun Jaitley’s tenure at DDCA was riddled with corruption. You being a lawyer should also know the cases of massive misappropriation of funds are still pending in courts. Late Arun Jaitley I’m told was an able politician. So it’s the parliament & not a cricket stadium which needs to remember him for posterity.

He might have been a good cricket fan too, but his dalliance with cricket administration was dubious & left much to desire. This is not a rhetorical assessment but a factual appraisal of his time at DDCA.

Take my word, failures don’t need to be celebrated with plaques & busts. They need to be forgotten. Mr President if ever you get to travel to the cricket stadiums around the world you will find how aesthetically challenged Kotla is and how it lacks the grandeur of a Test Centre. You need to be educated that sports administrators don’t need to be self-serving. People who surround you presently will never inform you that it’s WG Grace at Lord’s...Sir Jack Hobbs at the Oval...Sir Donald Bradman at the SCG...Sir Garfield Sobers at Barbados & Shane Warne of recent vintage at the MCG...who adorn their cricket stadia with the Spirit of Cricket never out of place..so when the kids walk into these stadiums these majestic statues/busts enhance & enliven the inspiring stories of these past heroes that their elders tell them. Sporting arenas need sporting role models.

The place of the administrators is in their glass cabins. Since DDCA doesn’t understand this Universal cricket culture, I need to walk out of it. I can’t be part of a stadium which has got its priorities so grossly wrong & where administrators get precedence over the cricketers.

Please bring down my name from the stand with immediate effect. You needn’t worry about me or my legacy. God Almighty has been very kind to me to keep me alive with my cricketing convictions. I don’t wish my strength of character to be maligned by my silence or association with this unsporting act.

Thankfully,

Bishan Bedi

It is a Sikh again who has the guts and integrity to stand against the authoritarianism and corruption of the present government.

This is the kind of sikhs we know about. Otherwise Manmohan singh didnt have integrity to stand against authoritarianism and corruption during UPA govt. Navjot Sidhu, another brave sikh, used to call say MMS was not a sardar because of that.

So this is what motabhai has to say about this controversy,

New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah today sidestepped the controversy with Bishan Singh Bedi over the unveiling of Arun Jaitley's statue at Feroz Shah Kotla grounds, saying there are "two kinds of people in cricket".

"One is people who play. The second is people who make an atmosphere for playing cricket. Their contribution is also a lot. For that we are unveiling statue," Mr Shah said while unveiling the statue on Arun Jaitley's birth anniversary.

Make an atmosphere for playing cricket? What this second category does is swindle money for its own benefits which is hard earned by the first category. By all accounts DDCA has been an extremely corrupt body for so many years now and these Jaitley baap betas have been heading it for most of that time.

Btw, what does he have to say about his own son getting to be BCCI vice prez without having any qualifications? Is he not a dynast enough for him?

Unlike you the cricketers know the value of the administrators. If they were being so exploited, nothing is stopping them from forming a union and a cricket body of their own.
