FIFA 2022 World Cup Qatar Qualifiers / Play-Offs

Couple of surprising results in the Asian leg of the World Cup qualifiers

Japan losing at home to Oman and Korea only drawing against Iraq. Vietnam were leading against Saudis only to lose 3-1 after a Red Card. The gap between the big teams and the rest is diminishing fast.

Spain suffered their first World Cup qualifying defeat since 1993 as Sweden came from behind to end La Roja's 66-game run.

Carlos Soler volleyed Luis Enrique's Spain into an early lead in Stockholm on his international debut.

But just 12 seconds after play resumed Alexander Isak took advantage of a defensive mistake to slam home.

Viktor Claesson controlled Dejan Kulusevski's pass before firing in a famous winner from 12 yards out.

The previous team to beat Spain in a World Cup qualifier were Sweden's neighbours, Denmark, in March 1993 in Copenhagen.

Since then Spain had won 52 World Cup qualifiers and drawn the other 14.

The win takes Sweden top of Group B on nine points from three games.

Spain have seven points from four games and could be facing a play-off for a place at the 2022 World Cup with only the group winners qualifying automatically.

Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho will miss England's World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Poland because of a "minor knock".

The 21-year-old was hurt in training earlier this week, and sat out Thursday's win over Hungary.

He will now return to his club, leaving Gareth Southgate with a 23-man squad.

A statement from England said Sancho was "expected to recover in time" to play for Manchester United against Newcastle on Saturday, 11 September.

Sancho has featured in three all of the Red Devils' Premier League matches since joining them for £73m from German Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund in the summer.

He made his first start in their 1-0 win at Wolves before the international break.

The former Manchester City youth player has scored three goals in 22 appearances for England.

In his last appearance for the Three Lions, he had a penalty saved in their shootout defeat by Italy in the European Championship final.

England host Andorra on Sunday (17:00 BST) before travelling to Poland on Wednesday (19:45 BST).

HALF-TIME
Belarus 2-1 Wales

What a strange half for Wales.

They were very comfortable at 1-0, but since they conceded a penalty they have been all over the shop and could be further behind.

https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/58372987

Gareth Bale completed a match-winning hat-trick deep in injury time to spare Wales from embarrassment against Belarus in Russia and keep alive their hopes of qualifying for the 2022 World Cup.

Wales made the ideal start as the first of two Bale penalties gave them an early lead, but they unravelled in two calamitous first-half minutes as goals from Vitali Lisakovich and Pavel Sedko put Belarus in front.

Lisakovich scored from the spot after Chris Gunter was penalised for a raised foot, before an unmarked Sedko punished shambolic defending from Wales, who were fortunate not to be further behind at half-time.

Bale scored his second spot-kick to bring Wales level midway through the second half and, in the third of four minutes of injury time, the captain came to his country's rescue with a low shot that squirmed under Belarus goalkeeper Sergei Chernik and into the net.

After losing their opening match of the campaign to group leaders Belgium, Wales could ill afford to draw this game, never mind lose it.

And having stared at an ignominious defeat in Kazan which would have effectively ended their aspirations of qualifying automatically for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, this fortuitous victory keeps the dream intact, no matter how improbable it may be.

Only the group winners qualify automatically and Group E leaders Belgium, ranked number one in the world and unbeaten in their four matches to date, remain overwhelming favourites ahead of the second-placed Czech Republic and Wales, who are third with a game in hand.

Robert Page's side have another five games catch their rivals - starting against Estonia in Cardiff on Wednesday - but, even at this early stage, the play-offs look like their likeliest route to a first World Cup appearance since 1958.

Finishing second in their group would secure a play-off spot, but Wales at least have the peace of mind that winning their most recent Nations League group has all but ensured their passage to the play-offs.

That might have been what most would have expected of Wales when they were drawn in such a challenging group but, after this escape act against a Belarusian side 89th in the world rankings, they still have an outside chance of overhauling Belgium.

This was very nearly a nightmare come true for Wales, whose preparations for this game had been disrupted like never before.

On top of the 10 players absent because of injury, suspension and Covid-19, they were without a further three as a result of visa issues.

That was because the game was moved to Kazan in Russia as teams from the United Kingdom and the European Union cannot enter Belarus by air because of sanctions against the country's government.

No wonder, therefore, that Page had described this fixture as a "nightmare logistically" - but Wales were still expected to beat a Belarus team 70 places below them in the Fifa rankings.

They looked well placed to do so when they were awarded a penalty inside five minutes. Bale latched on to a lofted ball into the Belarus penalty area by Ben Davies and, after taking a touch, the Wales captain was clattered to the ground by Chernik.

Bale sent the Belarus skipper the wrong way with his penalty, firing into the bottom-right corner to end a run of 16 matches without an international goal stretching back to 2019.

Wales took control from that point and had chances to extend their lead, with Joe Allen having a shot saved by Chernik and Daniel James pushing another narrowly wide.

However, after half an hour the contest was turned on its head as Wales imploded.

Gunter was the first to err with a high boot on Nikolai Zolotov, which Lisakovich punished with a thunderous low penalty, and then centre-backs James Lawrence and Chris Mepham were both horribly out of position as Sedko scored Belarus' second.

The home side, albeit on neutral ground, should have been further ahead by half-time but Aleksandr Sachivko and Danila Klimovich both squandered fine opportunities.

Those were to prove costly misses as Wales were awarded a second penalty when Davies was pushed in the back as he attempted a header on goal. Bale, who had missed a spot-kick during Euro 2020 this summer, scored his second of the game as he sent Chernik the wrong way once again.

Wales knew a draw was of no real use against such lowly opposition but their desperate late attempts to score a winner looked destined to amount to nothing.

That was until the ball fell to Bale inside the box and, with just a minute of added time left, his low left-footed strike - weak by his high standards - snuck under Chernick and rolled over the line to complete his hat-trick and Wales' late heist.

England secured a predictably comfortable win over Andorra at Wembley as the smooth path to next year's World Cup in Qatar continued with a fifth successive victory in their qualifying group.

Manager Gareth Southgate made 11 changes from the side that won 4-0 in Hungary in readiness for arguably the toughest test in European Group I, in Poland on Wednesday.

Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford was given a debut but was unable to find the net in the usual one-sided contest against Andorra, although their damage limitation exercise was relatively successful until the last 20 minutes.

Jesse Lingard gave England the lead with a left-foot finish after 18 minutes but it then took then until the 72nd minute to double their advantage when Harry Kane, on as substitute for Bamford, scored his 40th goal for his country from the penalty spot after Christian Garcia fouled Mason Mount.

Andorra, inevitably, tired and Lingard got his second and England's third with a low shot that the evaded the grasp of Andorra keeper Josep Gomes.

And in a moment greeted with real joy around Wembley, Arsenal's Bukayo Saka, whose last Wembley experience was missing the decisive penalty in England's Euro 2020 Final loss to Italy, celebrated his 20th birthday by scoring with a neat header five minutes from time.

England's performances, both individual and as a team, must all be shaped by the context of an Andorran opposition that currently nestles neatly between New Caledonia and the Dominican Republic in 156th place in the current Fifa rankings.

What is surely beyond dispute, however, is that England have a genuine rising star in their ranks in Borussia Dortmund's 18-year-old Jude Bellingham.

The youngster who emerged at Birmingham City before following England team-mate and new Manchester United signing Jadon Sancho to Dortmund carries the hallmark of quality in everything he does.

And while this opposition may be low in the rankings, it should also be noted that Bellingham has also looked as extraordinarily composed and at home in an England shirt in pretty much every international he has played.

One early moment of sleight of foot had the Wembley crowd on their feet in appreciation and he subsequently cruised around looking unflustered and a cut above everyone else on the pitch until he was removed from the action by Southgate.

Bellingham has been earmarked as a youngster destined for an outstanding career as soon as he came to prominence at Birmingham and he has done nothing since to change the widely-held view that England have a performer of the very highest stature on their hands.

Argentina v Brazil match stopped. Police on ground to arrest 4 Argentina playets who were not allowed to play in Brazil because of quarantine rules. Lol.

Brazil and Argentina's World Cup qualifier was halted just minutes after kick off on Sunday after Brazilian health officials objected to the participation of three Argentine players they believe broke quarantine rules.

The visitors walked off the pitch at the Corinthians arena after the officials came out to stop the game.

If you are confused:

4 of Argentina’s players lied upon entering Brazil by saying they hadn’t been in England within the last 2 weeks.

Anvisa found out and went to their hotel with federal police to detain them, but they had gone to the stadium already.

That all led to this.

The World Cup Qualifier between Brazil and Argentina on Sunday night has been abandoned after Brazilian health officials entered the pitch in a row over Covid rules.

Fifa says it "regrets" the scenes leading to the suspension of Brazil and Argentina's World Cup qualifier which stopped "millions of fans" from enjoying the game.

Sunday's match was abandoned just after kick-off after Brazilian health officials objected to the participation of three Argentine players they say broke quarantine rules.

Fifa said it had received the first reports from match officials, which will now be analysed by "the competent disciplinary bodies".

No date for the rearranged fixture has been set.

"Fifa regrets the scenes preceding the suspension of the match between Brazil and Argentina for the Conmebol qualifiers of the Fifa World Cup 2022 which prevented millions of fans from enjoying a match between two of the most important football nations in the world," world football's governing body said in a statement.

"The first match official reports have been sent to Fifa. This information will be analysed by the competent disciplinary bodies and a decision will be taken in due course."

Speaking in a video address to the European Club Association's general assembly, Fifa president Gianni Infantino urged Europe to show flexibility in its thinking in order to help South America resolve its qualification backlog.

It comes after the UK Government ignored Infantino's request to grant quarantine exemptions to footballers so they could fulfil their international commitments.

"We have a difficult situation in the UK. Players have to go back to play for their countries," he said.

"In March, the South American players stayed with their clubs but now they have to play the qualifiers for their national teams. That is why I called for solidarity.

"We have to give hope to countries who only see their best players when they play for their national teams. We have to protect the World Cup. "September has not been ideal, let's find the right compromise for October and November and next year."

What happened?

Sunday's match at Sao Paulo's Corinthians Arena was abandoned after five minutes when Brazilian health officials came on to the pitch.

The dramatic intervention came hours after Brazil's health authorities had said four England-based players for Argentina had to quarantine.

Under Brazilian rules, visitors who have been in the UK in the 14 days before entering the country must quarantine for 14 days on arrival.

Although it did not name the four, the players with English Premier League clubs are Emiliano Buendia and Emiliano Martinez of Aston Villa, and Giovani lo Celso and Cristian Romero of Tottenham Hotspur. Martinez, Lo Celso and Romero all started the game.

Brazilian health agency Anvisa said the four players provided "false information" and "failed to comply" with local laws.

It said after it realised false information had been provided on Friday, it held a meeting with the "institutions involved" on Saturday to inform them of the need to quarantine.

Despite this, the players still trained on Saturday night. On Sunday, Anvisa enlisted the help of the federal police to enforce quarantine, only to have their attempts "frustrated".

The Argentine Football Association said the team had been in Brazil since 3 September and had complied with all the health protocols, while Brazilian Football Confederation president Ednaldo Rodrigues criticised the health officials for the timing of their intervention.

Around an hour after the game was stopped, South American football's governing body Conmebol said in a statement the match had been suspended.

Tottenham duo Giovani Lo Celso and Cristian Romero are set to be fined by the club after joining up with the Argentina national squad without permission.

Sky Sports News has learned that Lo Celso and Romero will be disciplined for making the trip to South America for games against Venezuela and Brazil against the club's wishes, with both players expected to receive hefty fines.

Lo Celso and Romero are planning on flying to Croatia, along with Aston Villa's Emiliano Martinez and Emiliano Buendia, following the controversial suspension of Argentina's World Cup qualifier in Brazil to avoid having to quarantine. The four Argentine Premier League-based players were accused of not following strict Covid protocols upon entering Brazil.

Crucially, Buendia and Martinez have both followed the agreement set out with Villa before they left for the international break, and there is no suggestion they have done anything wrong, but the same cannot be said for the Tottenham duo.

Fifa says disciplinary proceedings have been launched against Brazil and Argentina after the events that saw their World Cup qualifier abandoned.

Sunday's match was halted just after kick-off after Brazilian health officials objected to the participation of three Argentine players they say broke quarantine rules.

Fifa said their move follows analysis of the match reports from Sao Paulo.

No date for the rearranged fixture has yet been set.

Brazil's health authorities had said four England-based players for Argentina had to quarantine upon arrival due to Covid-19 measures.

No players were named, but the players at English Premier League clubs are Emiliano Buendia and Emiliano Martinez of Aston Villa, and Tottenham duo Giovani lo Celso and Cristian Romero.

The match was ended just five minutes into the game when members of Anvisa, the Brazilian sanitary authority, walked onto the pitch and called for play to be stopped.

Under current Brazilian rules, anyone that has been in the UK in the 14 days prior to arriving in the country must quarantine for 14 days immediately upon arrival.

Anvisa director Antonio Barra Torres said the Argentina players did not comply with these rules despite being directed to do so.

"We got to this point because everything that Anvisa directed, from the first moment, was not fulfilled," Barra Torres said on Brazilian television, according to AFP.

"They went to the stadium and they entered the field, in a series of breaches."

The Argentine Football Association said the team had complied with all health protocols.

Aston Villa chief executive Christian Purslow said the events surrounding the match will now make clubs "incredibly nervous" about releasing their players for international duty in future.

"It is a mess. What happened in Brazil on Sunday was one of the most extraordinary things I've seen watching football in all my life," he said.

The Argentina squad has now left Brazil to prepare for their upcoming World Cup qualifier at home to Bolivia on Friday, 10 September.

A comfortable victory over Azerbaijan moved Portugal to the top of Group A - but automatic World Cup qualification remains in the balance.

Manchester City's Bernardo Silva produced a stunning finish then, after Diogo Jota mis-controlled a Bruno Fernandes cross, Andre Silva tapped in.

Liverpool's Jota headed in the third to secure the win and leave Azerbaijan on one point at the bottom of the group.

Serbia, who were joint top, face Republic of Ireland later on Tuesday.

The two sides started Tuesday level on 10 points at the top of Group A, with Serbia ahead on goal difference, before Portugal secured their third win of the international break.

Portugal were without record-breaking goalscorer Cristiano Ronaldo, who was suspended after receiving a second yellow card of the campaign for removing his shirt as he celebrated his second goal in the 2-1 win over Republic of Ireland.

Three matches remain for Portugal, who face Luxembourg on October 12.

Liverpool, Man City, Chelsea & Man Utd hit as eight Brazilian players barred from playing in Premier League

The likes of Alisson Becker, Fabinho, Roberto Firmino, Gabriel Jesus, Ederson and Fred will be unavailable for their Premier League clubs this weekend
Premier League teams including Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United will be without a host of star players this weekend after the row between English clubs and the Brazilian Football Association escalated dramatically.

FIFA, Goal can confirm, has informed clubs that the controversial 'five-day rule' will be imposed by the Brazilian FA, who are angry that players were withdrawn from the latest round of World Cup qualifiers.

That would prevent eight players from five clubs from featuring in this round of domestic fixtures, although it has emerged that Everton forward Richarlison will be allowed to play this weekend, due to the Toffees' strong relationship with the Brazilian federation. Richarlison was allowed to play for Brazil in the Olympic Games in Beijing earlier this summer.

World Cup qualifiers: UAE striker Ali Mabkhout equals Pele's record in 1-1 draw with Syria

This was UAE's second straight draw after being held to a goalless draw at home by Lebanon last week

Ali Mabkhout wrote his name in the history books with an opportunistic strike that helped the prolific striker equal Brazilian legend Pele’s record as the seventh-highest international scorer of all time with 77 goals. But his effort was not enough to give UAE their first win in the third round of the World Cup qualifiers on Tuesday.

A fast-paced game at King Abdullah II Stadium in Amman, Jordan, saw UAE play out a 1-1 draw with Syria.

This was UAE’s second straight draw after being held to a goalless draw at home by Lebanon last week.

Having lost the first game to Iran 1-0, Syria staged an impressive fightback on Tuesday to earn their first point in the qualifying campaign, thanks to a 64th-minute goal from Mahmood Al Baher.

The visitors opened their account with their very first chance as Syrian goalkeeper Ibrahim Alma failed to handle Shahin Abdulrahman’s long-range pass, allowing the ball to slip through to Ali Mabkhout who was perfectly positioned to poke home his 77th international goal, surpassing Argentine legend Lionel Messi and matching Pele’s record.

Syria thought they were gifted the equaliser when Mahmoud Khamis’ miscued attempt to clear a cross with his weaker right foot saw the ball fall straight to striker Omar Khribin inside the box with the goal at his mercy, but the 2017 AFC Player of The Year could not keep his composure and sent his effort just wide.

Khribin was presented with another golden opportunity just after the hour mark as a cross from the left was deflected into his path but with only goalkeeper Ali Khaseif to beat, he fluffed his lines.

The final minutes of the half saw missed chances from both sides as Khribin beat the wall with a free-kick from 20 yards out but couldn’t bring it down on time, watching his effort graze the roof of the net.

At the other end, Mabkhout got on the end of a Bandar Al Ahbabi cross at the near post but his attempted chip ended behind for a goal kick.

Syria’s first chance of a cagey second half came at the hour mark through substitute Mahmood Al Baher who collected Aias Aosman’s pass inside the box and fired an effort that was parried away by Khaseif.

Minutes later, the UAE goalkeeper could do little as Al Baher came knocking again. Defender Abdulrahman was unable to deal with Mahmood Al Mawas’ cross from the right and the ball fell to the substitute who rifled on the half volley into the back of the net for Syria’s equaliser.

Mabkhout could have doubled his tally with just 10 minutes to go as Al Ahbabi whipped in a cross from a set-piece for him at the far post but the UAE’s record goalscorer could not direct his header towards the goalmouth. (with inputs from AFC website)

Brazil have selected eight Premier League players for October's World Cup qualifiers despite the country remaining on the UK's travel red list.

Last month most English clubs refused to release players called up by South American countries.

Currently anyone travelling to Brazil from the UK must quarantine for 14 days when they arrive in the country and 10 days when they arrive back in the UK.

But the Brazil FA said "positive talks" have been held over travel exemptions.

Liverpool duo Alisson and Fabinho, Manchester City's Ederson and Gabriel Jesus, Chelsea defender Thiago Silva, Manchester United midfielder Fred, Leeds forward Raphinha and Tottenham defender Emerson Royal have all been called up for matches against Venezuela, Colombia and Uruguay.

Former Middlesbrough midfielder Juninho Paulista, the Brazil national team coordinator, said the eight England-based players had been called up with the belief an agreement would be made next week allowing players to avoid travel restrictions.

"We've had lots of positive meetings with Fifa, the Premier League and the British government, and we trust that there will be a positive solution next week," he said. "That is why we have called them up."

The Brazilian football federation will have to reach a separate agreement with the country's health authority to exempt England-based players from quarantine on their arrival.

In August the Premier League released a statement saying its clubs had "reluctantly but unanimously" decided not to release players for matches in red-list countries during September's international break.

However, four players, Emiliano Buendia and Emiliano Martinez of Aston Villa, and Giovani lo Celso and Cristian Romero of Tottenham, travelled to Argentina to join up with their national side.

But that led to farcical scenes at Sao Paulo's Corinthians Arena when the Brazil v Argentina World Cup qualifier was abandoned after five minutes when Brazilian health officials came on to the pitch to stop the match, saying the four England-based players for Argentina had to quarantine.

Despite complaints being made by the Brazilian football federation, as well as those from Mexico, Paraguay and Chile over the Premier League not releasing players for matches, all affected players were allowed to play their next matches for their clubs.

Fifa has the power to enforce five-day suspensions for players not released to play for their national sides.

Brazil have won all eight of their qualifiers so far and are six points clear of Argentina at the top of the South American qualifying group for Qatar 2022.

Argentina have selected three Premier League players for October's World Cup qualifiers despite the country remaining on the UK's travel red list.

Last month, most English clubs refused to release players called up by South American countries for qualifiers.

Since Friday, Argentine nationals do not need to quarantine after arrival in the country from overseas, if they are vaccinated and test negative for Covid.

But anyone arriving in the UK from Argentina must quarantine for 10 days.

Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez and Tottenham's Giovani lo Celso and Cristian Romero have been named in Argentina's 30-man squad for their games with Paraguay, Uruguay and Peru from 8-15 October.

Villa and Tottenham both have Premier League fixtures on the weekend of 16-17 October.

In August, the Premier League released a statement saying its clubs had "reluctantly but unanimously" decided not to release players for matches in red-list countries during September's international break.

But Villa said Martinez and compatriot Emiliano Buendia would join up with their national side, while Spurs boss Nuno Espirito Santo accepted the club "cannot stop" Lo Celso and Romero travelling too, knowing they would be unavailable for one Premier League game on their return.

It led to farcical scenes at the Brazil v Argentina World Cup qualifier in Sao Paulo as the game was abandoned after five minutes when Brazilian health officials came on to the pitch to stop the match, saying Argentina's four England-based players had to quarantine.

They returned via Croatia to avoid having to quarantine when arriving back in the UK.

World governing body Fifa has the power to enforce five-day suspensions for players not released to play for their national sides.

Argentina are six points behind Brazil at the top of the South American qualifying group for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, with five wins from eight games.

England boss Gareth Southgate has recalled defender Fikayo Tomori, striker Ollie Watkins and goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale to his squad for World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Hungary.

Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden also returns after a foot injury.

Defender Harry Maguire and right-back Trent-Alexander Arnold are out injured.

England travel to Andorra on Saturday, 9 October and host Hungary on Tuesday, 12 October.

The Three Lions are top of Group I heading into the penultimate international camp of the year with 16 points from six games.

Brazil moved within one win of qualifying for next year's World Cup by thrashing Uruguay 4-1 in Manaus, with Leeds' Raphinha scoring twice.

Playing with fans in the stands for the first time since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, Brazil were intense from the first minute, much different from the two latest displays against Venezuela and Colombia.

Neymar opened the scoring in the 10th minute after being teed up by Manchester United midfielder Fred. The PSG forward took the ball around goalkeeper Fernando Muslera fired in from a tight angle, to register his 70th goal for Brazil, seven short of Pele's all-time record.

Leeds winger Raphinha, making his first Brazil start, added a second in the 18th minute from close range, and later doubled his tally just before the hour mark.

Veteran forward Luis Suarez scored Uruguay's consolation in the 77th minute with a free-kick, but their hopes of a late comeback were dashed six minutes later when substitute Gabriel Barbosa headed past Muslera from a Neymar cross.

Argentina flew out of the traps against Peru but were held to a 1-0 victory by their visitors, with Lautaro Martinez the sole goalscorer just before half-time.

Instead of turning their first-half chances into more goals, Argentina were nearly made to pay when Peru were awarded a penalty in the 65th minute after a foul by goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, but Yoshimar Yotun hit the bar.

Chile rose to sixth position with 13 points after a 3-0 home win against bottom-of-the-table Venezuela. Erick Pulgar scored twice and Ben Brereton-Dias scored the third for the hosts.

Bolivia beat Paraguay 4-0 in La Paz, leading to losing manager Eduardo Berizzo being sacked after the game. Rodrigo Ramallo, Moises Angulo, Victor Abrego and Roberto Fernandez scored the goals. Bolivia rose to seventh place with 12 points, moving ahead of Paraguay in eighth.

Marcus Rashford and Jude Bellingham have been recalled to the England squad for this month's World Cup qualifiers with Albania and San Marino.

There is no place in the squad for Rashford's Manchester United team-mates Jadon Sancho and Jesse Lingard.

England play Albania at Wembley on 12 November before rounding off their qualifying campaign away to San Marino on 15 November.

They require four points from those games to qualify for Qatar 2022.

Liverpool's Trent Alexander-Arnold, who last played for the Three Lions on 5 September, also returns to the squad.

Forward Rashford has not played for England since the Euro 2020 final defeat by Italy in July.

He returned to club action on 16 October after shoulder surgery and has scored three goals in five appearances.

Lingard and Sancho both made the last squad but both have experienced issues with lack of form and game time.

Borussia Dortmund midfielder Bellingham, 18, was left out of the squad for last month's qualifiers against Andorra and Hungary.

Harry Maguire, Reece James and Kalvin Phillips also return, with Kieran Trippier, Fikayo Tomori and Ollie Watkins dropping out.

England squad
Goalkeepers: Sam Johnstone, Jordan Pickford, Aaron Ramsdale

Defenders: Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ben Chilwell, Conor Coady, Reece James, Harry Maguire, Tyrone Mings, Luke Shaw, John Stones, Kyle Walker

Midfielders: Jude Bellingham, Jordan Henderson, Mason Mount, Kalvin Phillips, Declan Rice, James Ward-Prowse

Forwards: Tammy Abraham, Phil Foden, Jack Grealish, Harry Kane, Marcus Rashford, Bukayo Saka, Raheem Sterling

Belgium and France both qualified for next year's World Cup finals with four goals from Kylian Mbappe helping the French demolish Kazakhstan 8-0.

The result left France top Group D on 15 points from seven games, four ahead of second-placed Finland, who they visit in their final match on Tuesday.
Karim Benzema added two goals while Adrien Rabiot and Antoine Griezmann scored one each to cap an impressive performance at the Parc des Princes and seal France's berth in next year's 32-nation tournament in Qatar.

The floodgates opened after Mbappe fired France into a sixth-minute lead with a superb first-time shot from a Theo Hernandez assist, with the home side always two gears ahead of the Kazakhs.

Mbappe added the second in the 12th minute with a simple finish into an empty net past a defender after Kingsley Coman raced down the right, and he completed a first-half hat-trick in the 32nd when he headed home an inch-perfect cross from Coman.

The French never took their foot off the pedal after the break and soon increased their advantage with two quickfire goals from Benzema, who poked in the fourth from a Hernandez assist before Mbappe turned provider.

Rabiot scored his first international goal in the 75th minute as he headed in Griezmann's corner before the latter netted his 42nd with a penalty, overtaking Michel Platini as his country's third-highest top scorer.

The brilliant Mbappe put the icing on the cake three minutes before the end with a sublime finish into the bottom-right corner from a fine assist by substitute Moussa Diaby, with the home crowd already in full swing.

Belgium secured themselves a spot in next year's World Cup finals and kept up their unbeaten qualifying run as they beat Estonia 3-1.

The semi-finalists in Russia in 2018 climbed to an unassailable 19 points in Group E, after Christian Benteke scored early and Yannick Carrasco and Thorgan Hazard added second-half goals.

The Belgians join Brazil, Denmark, France and Germany as the first five countries to qualify for the finals starting next November in Qatar.

Without the injured Romelu Lukaku and Michy Batshuayi, the 30-year-old Benteke was given a rare chance to lead the attack, and he took little time to open the scoring.

He tapped in from close range after Estonia goalkeeper Matvei Igonen made a horrible error, letting a low cross from Carrasco slip through his hands.

Benteke might have had a couple more before the break, while Eden Hazard had just the goalkeeper to beat after a clever over-the-top pass from Kevin De Bruyne, but he wasted the chance.

Carrasco showed the way after Benteke had set him up in the 52nd minute with a powerful left-footed drive into the top of the net from the edge of the area.

Estonia then pulled one back in the 70th minute when Rauno Sappinens shot was palmed away by Belgium goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois into the path of Erik Sorga, who put the ball away.

It was four minutes later that the two-goal advantage was restored when substitute Thorgan Hazard headed home De Bruyne's cross.

Wales moved clear in second place with a 5-1 home rout of Belarus, as Gareth Bale earned his 100th cap for his country

Two late goals from Montenegro denied the Netherlands the chance to book a berth at next year's World Cup finals with a match to spare, with their 2-2 draw on Saturday leaving the outcome of Group G in the balance.

The Dutch were eight minutes away from moving into an unassailable lead in the group, but goals from Ilija Vukotic in the 82nd minute and Nikola Vujnovic four minutes later meant the Netherlands must now wait for Tuesday's last home game against Norway in Rotterdam to book their place in Qatar.

They had been coasting at 2-0 after a double from Memphis Depay as they looked to banish the bitter memories of missing out on the last World Cup in Russia.

Yet their hopes of celebrating with a game to spare, after closest challengers Norway drew earlier on Saturday with Latvia, were spoilt by an exciting home comeback.

The Dutch remain two points ahead of the other teams in the group after Norway were held to a goalless draw at home by Latvia while Turkey beat Gibraltar 6-0. The Netherlands are on 20 points with Norway and Turkey on 18.

South Africa's FA (Safa) is to launch a formal protest with world governing body Fifa over the performance of the referee in their decisive World Cup qualifying loss to Ghana on Sunday night.

Needing a draw to reach the third and final round of African qualifying, South Africa lost 1-0 after Ghana converted a controversial penalty.

The Black Stars' narrow win enabled them to reach the African World Cup play-offs by the narrowest of margins, ousting South Africa at the top of the group on goals scored alone.

The spot-kick was awarded after Ghana's Leicester City midfielder Daniel Amartey went down following what appeared minimal contact from defender Rushine de Reuck, who was booked for his challenge.

"We will be writing to both Caf [the Confederation of African Football] and Fifa - firstly to investigate how the game was handled and secondly to challenge some of these decisions," Safa CEO Tebogo Mothlante said on Monday.

"As we did last night, we have already registered with the match commissioner that we will be making a formal complaint."

Mothlante explained that Safa has concerns over the legitimacy of both the decision and the display of the officiating team from Senegal, headed up by referee Maguette Ndiaye.

"We are very disheartened by their actions and we can't let it destroy the players - when we have the chance to challenge, we will challenge," he added.

"We feel very much robbed because it is not an isolated incident of a penalty. There are just a lot of questionable decisions by match officials and we will get an expert to dissect other incidents, so we can make a strong case."

Praying for precedent
South Africa is well aware that the capacity for matches to be replayed does exist, after they were forced to replay a 2018 World Cup qualifier against Senegal after the referee was found guilty of match manipulation.

The South Africans had originally beaten Senegal 2-1, with Fifa later concluding that Ghanaian referee Joseph Lamptey - 'with the sole purpose of facilitating a minimum number of goals to make certain bets successful' - 'clearly took two wrong decisions'.

Fifa lifts lid on fixed South Africa-Senegal 2018 World Cup tie
This included the award of a penalty to Bafana Bafana when Senegal's Kalidou Koulibaly was adjudged to have handled the ball, despite replays showing it had hit his knee.

Fifa took the unusual step of ordering the game to be replayed, whereupon South Africa lost 2-0 as Senegal qualified for the World Cup in Russia.

"Of course we are looking at the precedent whereby Fifa ordered us to replay Senegal and we think that if justice needs to be served the same decision should be taken against this Ghana game," added Mothlante.

"The match officials have decided the game which is not what is supposed to happen."

So how does UEFA WCQ play-off draw work? Because I don't want to see Portugal and Italy play each other :danish

Scotland will host Ukraine in the play-off semi-final for the 2022 World Cup, while Wales have been drawn at home to Austria.

If Scotland and Wales win their matches, they will face each other in Cardiff in a final for a spot in Qatar.

Wales are bidding to reach their first World Cup in 64 years, while Scotland have waited 24 years to play in one.

Other semi-finals include Italy v North Macedonia and Portugal at home to Turkey.

That draw means either European champions Italy or Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal will not be at the World Cup, with the winners of their semis meeting in a final.

The semi-finals and finals, both played over one leg, will take place over the course of five days from 24-29 March.

Some of the potential finals could be modern classics.

Can't pretend that I'm not hoping to see Wales v Scotland and Portugal v Italy come to fruition.

Iran have confirmed their spot for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, with a 1-0 victory over Iraq.

Noooo, why did Portugal and Italy have to be drawn together for one of the play-off finals... :100:

It's either the European Champions or Cristiano Ronaldo and his men that will not play the 2022 WC.

My Predictions:

Austria v Ukraine, Ukraine to win
Poland v Czech Republic, Czech Republic to win
Portugal v Italy, Italy to win...

A huge problem for Ronaldo and Portugal.

Imagine if Messi wins the world cup for Argentina, while Ronaldo is not present. The GOAT debate (imo they are both not in the top 5) will be shut down forever.

Sadio Mane makes no mistake from 12 yards!

More penalty heartbreak for Egypt against the Teranga Lions!

Nigerian fans acted with anger and unrestrained frustration as violence overshadowed the Super Eagles’ World Cup exit.

Local spectators peppered both the Ghana fans, some 100 or so, and the Black Stars players with water bottles – forcing the latter to cower and cover their heads as they battled their way down the tunnel following a mass pitch invasion.

The ugly scenes – with police hitting out at fans with batons – were allowed to continue by local security for around five minutes or so, and were only briefly interrupted when tear gas was thrown onto the pitch.

By that stage, a dug out had been overturned and smashed up as the unwanted-but-familiar side of football reared its ugly head.

Ghanaian supporters making their way from the stadium expressed their disbelief and dismay at their treatment, while football’s world governing body Fifa will take a dim view of scenes which require considerable explaining from both Nigerian security and football officials.

Bruno Fernandes sent Portugal to the World Cup with a double in their play-off final win over North Macedonia.

Fernandes won the ball in midfield, played a one-two with Manchester United team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo and fired home from the edge of the box to open the scoring in Porto.

He then volleyed in Diogo Jota's cross for the second having helped start the move himself outside his own box.

The Macedonians, who stunned Italy in the semis, offered little throughout.

It was almost a replay with Mane scoring the final pen!

Poor pens and an average match.

Congratulations to Senegal! I will be following them closely , hoping Mane can do some magic.

Unlucky Salah and Egpyt, close again.

Salah will win with LFC this year Godwilling, so a lot of glory for him to come.

Poland are through to the World Cup in Qatar after Robert Lewandowski and Piotr Zielinski's goals gave them a play-off final win over Sweden.

Lewandowski's penalty early in the second half, after a foul on Grzegorz Krychowiak, broke the deadlock.

Zielinski took advantage of a defensive lapse to run clear and settle the tie in favour of the home side.
The draw for the finals takes place this Friday in Doha with the World Cup getting under way on 21 November.

It will be the first time the tournament has been moved from its usual summer slot, in order for games to be played in milder winter temperatures in the Gulf.

And Poland will be there after a hard-fought victory over a Sweden side that played a huge part in denying them a place in the knockout stages of Euro 2020.

Mali's wait for a first-ever qualification goes on.

Scotland v Ukraine World Cup play-off semi-final rescheduled for 1 June

Scotland's World Cup play-off semi-final with Ukraine has been rescheduled for 1 June, with the winner playing Wales in the final four days later.

The Hampden semi was due to be played on 24 March but Ukraine asked Fifa to postpone the tie following Russia's invasion of the country.

Wales beat Austria to progress to the final, which takes place in Cardiff.

Scotland, Ukraine or Wales will face England, Iran and USA in the Qatar World Cup later this year.

The tournament takes place from 21 November to 18 December.

"Firstly, it will be great to be able to welcome to Ukraine to Hampden Park in June," said Scottish FA chief executive Ian Maxwell.

"While, understandably, there will be two sets of competitive players who are committed to taking another step closer to World Cup qualification, we also understand and appreciate the wider context in which the match will take place.

"We have been consistent throughout that postponing the original tie was the right and only thing to do and look forward to hosting Ukraine at Hampden Park in June."

Ukraine now leading Scotland 2-0 at Hampden and literally playing them off the park.

Men against boys is this.

At this rate, Scotland will not be going to the Qatar World Cup.

Scotland took the moral high ground to bring joy to Ukrainians by rolling over against the Ukraine.

We would have boycotted this tournament for human rights violations anyway.....

A heroic Ukraine roused a performance of spirit, endeavour and courage to stun Scotland and earn a historic World Cup play-off final against Wales.

With their country enshrouded in trauma amid the ongoing war with Russia, a team hauled together shone brightly at a sun-drenched Hampden.

Andriy Yarmolenko and Roman Yaremchuk struck either side of half-time, before Callum McGregor gave Scotland hope late on. But Artem Dovbyk sealed a Qatar 2022 showdown in Cardiff on Sunday with the last kick of the ball.

While images of fans watching on in war-torn Ukraine circulated, 3,500 fans bedecked in light blue and yellow - including 65 orphans invited by the Scottish FA - celebrated wildly in Glasgow on a night none will forget.

It was an evening which started with the lyrics of the Ukrainian national anthem striking an emotional chord at a charged Hampden.

Moments after their side strode on to the pitch draped in flags of their homeland, the words which were belted out took on a whole new significance. "The glory and freedom of Ukraine has not yet perished. Luck will still smile on us brother-Ukrainians."

As it transpired, luck had little to do with their team's triumph here. In perhaps their finest hour, they were peerless.

This match was a long time coming. Originally planned for March but postponed in the hope Ukraine would be capable of playing the fixture, a series of friendlies were all Olexandr Petrakov had to prepare.

It's been a gut-wrenching journey, with the tears on the face Oleksandr Zinchenko in Tuesday's pre-match news conference offering a poignant reminder to all what this game means against the backdrop of Ukraine's struggles.

But in Glasgow, there was no emotional fatigue. Not a hint of an adrenaline rush fading, not a whiff of the event getting the better of them.

Barring a late rally from the hosts, Petrakov's men exposed Scotland's vulnerabilities, which were made even more pronounced by the absence of Arsenal's Kieran Tierney. The opener on 33 minutes articulated that perfectly.

Yarmolenko timed his run on to a through ball to perfection as Scotland's high line failed. It was just him and the whites of Craig Gordon's eyes. Those eyes soon gazed up as the ball floated sublimely over the goalkeeper's head and into the back of the net.

Steve Clarke shuffled his pack at half-time, throwing on Ryan Christie. But just four minutes after the restart, Scotland were again ripped open with ease.

Oleksandr Karavaev was given the freedom of Mount Florida to bowl in another cross and Yaremchuk dealt with Aaron Hickey's attention without much trouble, his arching header back across goal looping in.

Clarke stood still at the edge of his technical area as the Benfica striker raced to his countrymen and women behind the goal.

In truth, the warning signs had been there. Gordon had denied Viktor Tsygankov on the half volley, while the Hearts goalkeeper saved from Yarmolenko at point-blank range with the game goalless.

Then came the moment when Scotland saw their world flash in front of them. John McGinn, the Tartan Army's darling, was gifted a header from six yards after Georgiy Bushchan flapped at a cross. With the goal at his mercy, the Aston Villa man headed wide. He looked on in disbelief.

On the touchline, Clarke seemed unmoved, preparing two substitutes for a late charge.

Scotland charged but toiled still, yet with 11 minutes they were gifted a lifeline. McGregor's effort was again not dealt with by an increasingly rattled Bushchan, who palmed the ball into the air and just over the line before it was hacked clear. Hampden erupted in a primal roar of desperate hope rather than founded expectation.

But as Scotland pushed, they were even more exposed at the back. A series of long punts in the closing stages broke down, with one final roll of the dice allowing the Ukrainians to burst forward deep into injury time.

Substitute Dovbyk had all the time he wished to eventually dispatch the ball by Gordon. The Dnipro-1 forward, who has not played a competitive match since December, showed little emotion as the ball ruffled the net. Around him, his compatriots celebrated wildly on an astonishing night for Ukraine as a football team, and a nation.

What does this mean?

In what is perhaps the finest moment for the Ukraine national team, even in victory the celebrations are against a sombre backdrop.

Coach Petrakov spoke from the heart in his post-match news conference. He dedicated the result to the people of Ukraine, and they may yet have another chapter to pen in this saga on Sunday. Don't bet against it.

Clarke acknowledged that his team were outplayed by their opponents, and captain Andy Robertson said Scotland didn't show up. It's hard to argue with either point.

For Scotland, there have been some truly bruising moments in the pursuit of tournament football since France '98. But the sting from this one will eat away more than most.

The level of expectation surrounding the national team has been raised. Regardless of the condition of the opponents, there was a confidence that Scotland would be in Wales this Sunday.

But what we saw was reminiscent of the deflating false hope experienced at last summer's Euros, when the Czechs dealt the Scots a heavy blow. They seemed caught out by the occasion. A shot at glory did not fall through their grasp, it was yanked away.

As either Ukraine or Wales can look forward with excitement to Qatar, self reflection will be the immediate thought for Clarke and his players whatever happens in the coming days.

Match stats

Scotland have failed to qualify for the last six men's World Cups since 1998. Between 1974 and 1998 they missed only one of seven tournaments.
Ukraine have progressed from a World Cup qualifying play-off tie for the first time at the fifth attempt, after failing in 1997, 2001, 2009 and 2013.
This was only the third meeting between the sides, with Ukraine now winning two, adding to a 2-0 victory in October 2006.
Yaremchuk has scored four goals in 2022 World Cup qualifying - the most of any Ukraine player. Three of those four goals have come away from home in Kazakhstan, Finland and Scotland.
McGregor scored only his second goal in his 43rd game for Scotland, adding to an effort against Croatia at Euro 2020.
Aged 39 years and 152 days, Gordon became the oldest player to appear for Scotland in a World Cup or World Cup qualifying match since Jim Leighton at the 1998 finals (39 years 334 days vs Morocco).
Yarmolenko scored his 45th goal for Ukraine, and is now only three behind Andriy Shevchenko (48).

What's next?

While Ukraine go to Cardiff, Scotland will have to try and rouse themselves for their Nations League opener against Armenia at Hampden next Wednesday (19:45 BST), followed by trips to Ireland and Armenia in the following six days.

Qatar World Cup 2022: Wales and Ukraine set for momentous play-off final in Cardiff

Wales will have history on their minds as they aim to qualify for their first World Cup since 1958 when they host Ukraine in Sunday's "massive" play-off final in Cardiff.

On what should be another emotionally charged occasion, Ukraine hope to bring more joy to their war-torn country after their semi-final win in Scotland.

But Wales must put their compassion on hold to realise their long-held dream.

England, the United States and Iran await the winners in Qatar.

"It's a massive game. There's no hiding it," said Wales captain Gareth Bale.

"We have only played in one World Cup. This is a stepping stone we want to take to play on the biggest level. We're desperate to win to achieve our goal.

"We understand the awful things going on in Ukraine. Our hearts go out to the kids, families and people of Ukraine. We've all felt awful during this time and not been able to do too much.

"But come tomorrow it's a game of football. We want to win."

Wales have not played at a World Cup in 64 years - only Indonesia and Cuba have gone longer between appearances.

Since that appearance in 1958, Welsh football history has been littered with tales of near misses. From Scotland in 1977 and 1985 to Romania in 1993, Wales have stood on the brink of history before - only to stumble at the final hurdle.

But these are different times. This is Wales' golden era, in which their players are not burdened by that past.

Qualifying for Euro 2016 ended their 58-year wait for a major tournament and reaching a first semi-final in France took Welsh football to new heights.

Wales followed that success by qualifying for Euro 2020 - but a World Cup would represent another level again.

"It's massive for the country," said manager Robert Page.

"The excitement, the buzz around the place - we've given ourselves an unbelievable opportunity.

"I trust in the players. I've got a great group of lads - it's a pleasure to work with them and I'm honoured to work with them.

"When you've got the quality that we've got in that changing room, then you trust in that."

Originally scheduled for March but postponed because of Russia's invasion, this match also represents an opportunity for Ukraine to qualify for only their second World Cup.

But set to the backdrop of war in their homeland, for Ukrainians this is about more than football.

With only friendly fixtures as preparation, Oleksandr Petrakov's side summoned an extraordinary amount of courage - as well as skill and attacking verve - to beat Scotland on a night of high emotion at Hampden Park.

Petrakov's impassioned post-match address - and the tearful speech from Manchester City''s Oleksandr Zinchenko a day earlier - were a moving illustration of the wider significance of their endeavours.

"Our team write to soldiers and received a flag from the war which they promised to hang in the dressing room," Petrakov said in Cardiff on Saturday.

"It's a really hard situation in Ukraine and not everyone can watch football because of the situation but we will try to concentrate and play well."

Ukraine had 3,500 supporters with them in Glasgow, and their contingent at Cardiff City Stadium will include 100 refugees who have been given free tickets by the Football Association of Wales.

There will also be a show of support from the home fans before kick-off but, once the first whistle blows, Wales' players will have to put their sympathy to one side.

Page has a fully fit squad available and, after resting his first-choice players for Wednesday's Nations League defeat in Poland, he is expected to revert to the team that beat Austria in March's World Cup play-off semi-final.

That will mean a return for the likes of Bale, who scored both goals in the 2-1 win over Austria, and Juventus midfielder Aaron Ramsey.

"As a team we're just going about it normally," said Bale.

"We understand the game is massive but it's a game of football that we need to perform and play well in."

Kind of hope Wales win this one, partly so we can have another UK home nation at the World Cup but also because the fawning circus around the Ukraine football team is getting a bit over the top.

GOAL - Wales 1-0 Ukraine

Gareth Bale

The main man produces on the main stage once again.

Dan James wins a free-kick on the edge of the area and Gareth Bale fires a thunderous effort towards goal.

Ukraine captain Andriy Yarmolenko tries to block the effort, but instead deflects it into his own net.

Wales won't care about that, and the Cardiff City Stadium is bouncing.

Wales overcame another monumental effort from Ukraine to qualify for their first World Cup since 1958 on a night of high emotion and drama in Cardiff.

Having beaten Scotland in an emotionally draining semi-final four days earlier, the war-torn Ukrainians were deeply impressive once again but fell just short in their attempt to reach only a second World Cup in their history.

Instead, it was Wales who achieved that feat at a delirious Cardiff City Stadium.

Their winning goal came against the run of play as Gareth Bale's first-half free-kick was inadvertently headed in by Ukraine captain Andriy Yarmolenko, a particularly cruel way for the visitors to concede having dominated before then.

Both teams tired but threw players forward in a chaotic second half, with Bale wasting a golden opportunity and substitute Brennan Johnson hitting the post for Wales.

Ukraine also had several chances to equalise but were repelled by the phenomenal goalkeeping of Wayne Hennessey and defending of Ben Davies.

City Stadium spoke of how cathartic it is for this footballing nation to have rid itself of its 64-year World Cup drought.

Now Wales can finally look forward to being a part of football's greatest competition in November, where England, the United States and Iran await in their group in Qatar.

As for this Ukrainian team, playing to the backdrop of Russia's invasion of their homeland, they have been an inspiration.

They were cheered on in Cardiff by their passionate supporters, including 100 refugees who were given the tickets for free by the Football Association of Wales, while home fans showed their appreciation for the away side with warm applause before kick-off.

However, Wales' mantra in the build-up to this game - as cold as it may have sounded - was that they had to take the emotion out of this game and temporarily put their compassion to one side.

And they did it to realise their own, long-held dream.

Congratulations Wales!!! :)

The red dragon has roared!

Ecuador will play at the World Cup in Qatar after Fifa dismissed claims by Chile that they had fielded an ineligible player in the qualifiers.

The Football Federation of Chile (FFC) filed a complaint with Fifa, saying that Byron Castillo - who played in eight of Ecuador's qualifiers - was actually Colombian, and faked his age.

However, world football's governing body said on Friday that after "considering all elements" it had decided to "close proceedings" against the Ecuadorian Football Federation.

"The present decision remains subject to an appeal before the Fifa Appeal Committee," it added.

The decision confirms Ecuador's place in Group A with hosts Qatar, Senegal and the Netherlands.

The president of the Ecuadorian FA said the decision from Fifa meant "sporting justice has been done".

Francisco Egas said: "We celebrate it more because we felt humiliated, we felt trampled by the great media campaign from the Chilean federation."

Pablo Milad, the president of Chile's football federation, said it would appeal and take the case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) if required.

"We are losing 1-0, but there is still the second half," Milad said.

"The Fifa ruling surprisingly did not favour us despite strong evidence. We will wait for the arguments and we will appeal."

The FFC's complaint said right-back Castillo, who plays for Ecuadorian side Barcelona, used a false birth certificate and nationality.

"There are innumerable proofs that the player was born in Colombia, in the city of Tumaco, on July 25, 1995, and not on November 10, 1998, in the Ecuadorian city of General Villamil Playas," it read.

Chile claimed that Ecuador's football federation knew the player was Colombian, adding: "The world of football cannot close its eyes... the practice of serious and conscious irregularities in the registration of players cannot be accepted.

"There must be fair play on and off the pitch."

Castillo's nationality had reportedly been looked into by Ecuadorian authorities and the FEF over a number of years, before the player was eventually picked for the national side last year.

The last two places at the World Cup finals will be decided this week, with Australia, New Zealand, Peru and Costa Rica digging into their stamina reserves for do-or-die battles. Both international playoffs are single-leg showdowns in the Ahmad bin Ali Stadium in Doha, a 40,000 capacity venue that will host matches in the World Cup finals in the autumn.

Australia take on Peru on Monday. New Zealand face Costa Rica 24-hours later. All four nations are used to the last-chance scrap for a World Cup place.

Four years ago Peru beat New Zealand 2-0 to clinch a slot at Russia 2018 where they beat Australia in the first round group -- their first World Cup win in four decades.

Graham Arnold's Australia are looking for a fifth straight appearance at the finals, but they needed playoffs for two of the past four and in 2006 that meant a penalty shootout against Uruguay.

Peru are ranked 22 in the world, 20 places above Australia, who beat United Arab Emirates 2-1 in the Doha stadium last week to reach the final playoff.

But Arnold plays up the Socceroos' "underdog" status and says he has driven a never-say-die psyche into the team.

"We like people saying that we have no chance and we cannot achieve anything," he said after the UAE win secured with an 84th minute Ajdin Hrustic goal.

"You know sometimes you don't play well but you can still win by fighting and running, and chasing and being aggressive and that also can be a success.

"Fight, scratch and do whatever you have got to do to win the game. However we win it, who cares? Just win it," said Arnold, who will be without injured key striker Adam Taggart.

Curses and crowds

Peruvian shamans have put ritual curses on the Australian team and government workers have been given a special holiday to watch the match that midfielder Edison Flores says "is the most important of our lives for many years".

Whoever wins will go into World Cup group D with a daunting first game against defending champions France on November 22. They will also face Denmark and Tunisia.

The winner of Tuesday's game goes into an even tougher Group E against Spain, Germany and Japan.

Costa Rica, who have played in five finals, are favourites against New Zealand who are aiming for the third appearance -- their first since 2010.

Halfway through their 14 group matches, Costa Rica had only six points and they needed an unbeaten second half -- including victories over the United States and Canada -- to get into fourth place in the Central and North American group contest and the playoff.

Costa Rica have battled up to 31st in the world rankings in that time, while New Zealand are 101st.

"People may think that they (New Zealand) will be an easy opponent but it's not true. They are a strong team who like to counter-attack," said Danish-based veteran defender Bryan Oviedo who warned against complacency.

New Zealand lost 1-0 to Peru in a warmup match in Barcelona last week -- their first game in front of a crowd since November 2019 because of the coronavirus pandemic.

"We learned a hell of a lot," said coach Danny Hay.

Australia became the 31st team to book their place at the 2022 World Cup after beating Peru on penalties in an intercontinental play-off in Qatar.

Goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne, who replaced Mat Ryan just before the shootout for his third cap, was the hero, saving Alex Valera's final kick.

This will be Australia's fifth World Cup in a row, having qualified every time since 2006.

They will be in Group D alongside holders France, Denmark and Tunisia.

The World Cup's final team will be decided on Tuesday when Costa Rica face New Zealand at the same venue, the Ahmad bin Ali Stadium.

That game will be streamed live on the BBC Sport website and app as well as on iPlayer and the Red Button at 19:00 BST

'A risk but it worked' - Arnold on Redmayne sub
Australia boss Graham Arnold's decision to bring off captain Ryan for Redmayne, whose only previous competitive international was against Nepal, was surprising but it ultimately paid off.

The Sydney FC keeper, 33, danced on the line for each kick in a bid to put the Peruvians off and Luis Advincula hit the post before Valera's final penalty was saved.

"He's a very good penalty saver and I did something that could affect them mentally," said Arnold.

"They were probably asking themselves the question, 'Why is this guy being brought on, he has to be good'.

"Maybe that was the reason they hit the post. It's a 1% mental effort to trouble the Peru penalty takers. It was a risk but it worked out."

Redmayne, who had trials at Arsenal as a youngster, was making just his third appearance for the Socceroos.

"This idea was floated pre-selection that this might eventuate in these kind of circumstances and for the two or three weeks we've been here [in Qatar], I've kind of had that in my mind," said Redmayne.

"I've been working on a few things in training but at the end of the day it's a flip of the coin, it's either right or left.

"I'm no hero, I just played my role like everyone did tonight."

The game itself in Al Rayyan was far from a classic, with no chances of note in the opening 80 minutes.

Australia had three good opportunities in the final 10 minutes with Ajdin Hrustic forcing two saves and Aziz Behich curling just wide.

Edison Flores had Peru's only shot on target but his long-range strike in extra time was straight at Ryan.

He went even closer, with the game's best chance, when his header hit the post.

The game was played in excess of 30C in an air-conditioned Ahmad bin Ali Stadium. In the build-up to the game Peru assistant boss Nolberto Solano raised concerns that the World Cup itself was moved to November to avoid the stifling heat, and yet some of the play-offs have been played now.

His side, who were hoping to reach a second consecutive World Cup, had finished fifth in South American qualifying to reach this game.

Australia finished third in their Asian qualifying group and beat the United Arab Emirates 2-1 in Qatar last Tuesday to set up their showdown with Peru.
