The best way to overcome France is to deprive them of ball possession, to frustrate them. Then they might fumble things up a little. Uruguay must take note.

Tolisso on the left . What a joke. Why not play Lemar? He knows where to be as a wide player and is also comfortable in central areas which Deschsmps wanted to replicate with Matudi out.

It's their best formation. I just wouldn't play Tolisso and play Fekir instead.

Giroud limits Frances game so much.

Asking him to start Fekir is too much. He might be needed today . Diffcult to break Uraguay down.

Best thing for the game is France taking the lead. Forces Uraguay to come out so we get a more open game.

Going to be really tight, but France has got nose a head, which might now suit playing Tolliso, because Uruguay needs to chase the game now without Cavani. Uruguay already has missed a golden chance and France might hit back on counter. These 2 teams always play tight game, 0-0 or 1-0 either side. Lamar might come in for last 15 minutes with his speed.

Ooh what a blunder by F. Muslera. Goalkeepers have been pathetic this season. I wonder why?

Just given the game away. Poor Uruguay.

Poor keeping ruined this theory.

Glad if France get through.

Feel sorry for Uruguay... had Cavani been there they would have been much more of an attacking threat

Clear penalty not given to Uruguay in 1st half. FIFA want France to win although France really does not need help from them.

France far too good for this Uruguay team. Don't mind defensive football but some of their antics are an absolute disgrace.

No, Giroud gives them more balance. Didn't you witness how terrible they played vs Australia playing Griezmann as a false 9? At least in this formation they can control the midfield and have a target man up front, giving them more options as passing through teams won't work. Tolisso starting is a defensive minded tactic but he played well. Nothing will change as the trio of Pogba, Griezmann and Mbappe have played well and have been enough to win games so far. While having Matuidi/Tolisso gives them solidity in defence on the left and at times they can change to a 4-3-3 too with Tolisso in there rather than say a Dembele or Lemar.

Easy win for France, obviously with no Cavani for Uruguay it was gonna be an uphill battle, but a controlled win.

Brazil vs Belgium.... I think Belgium might win this, could be a high scoring match.

It was 1 game. They are a young team. Was harsh not to give that front 3 another chance. If you push up and stop the crosses Giroud is useless.

Nothing will change whilst Deschsmps is coach but once he has gone and this France team get an attacking manager you'll see the true potential of this team.

Brazil vs Belgium is probably the closet quarter final. 2 very good all round teams. Both teams have collapsed under pressure in recent tournaments.

Can't wait for this 1.

It is hard to guess who will come out on top but the bookies have made Brazil clear favourits, I guess due to their good defence so far along with having 5/6 players who can score from outside the box.

So much quaility on one football field. A number of ATG players.

Belgium defence is very strong as well. I think Brazil will edge but if Belgium win it wouldn't be a shock to me.

Has to be the tie of WC so far. France has got past Uruguay so easy that, if this game goes to 120 minutes or beyond, it might drain the winner. Also, SF is at St. Petersburg, far away from Kazan and just 3 days in between.

In tie breaker, I think Belgium has the edge for Courtois. Silva hits the post!

Good chacnges by Belgium today.

I thought Chadli looked excellent when he came on against Japan.

2-1 for Belgium, but won’t be surprised opposite. I am actually out of Toronto and watching via a horrible streaming. You can watch cricket like that may be, but soccer😩

Brazil have started very fast and direct. Belguim are attacking when they can too.

This could be a classic in the making.

Surely this should be on free tv in Canada? :inti

Interseting defending :))

Now Im sure this game will be a world cup classic! Come on Brazilia.

It’s not - it’s on TSN & may be CBC . I am actually in a weekend with family, watching on iPad via TSN streaming😩 but here LTE isn’t working, mostly 3G.

1-0 Belgium. Now we’ll see how much time Neymar spend for his treatment; first time Brazil is behind in this WC.

Belgs arent dirty so no problem today ;)

Coutinho is far too deep in this role, with his passing ability and vision, scoring from outside the box needs to step upfield.

Tactical suicide by the Brazilians, first with the awful defending of the corner for the second time in this world cup, then after going behind, throwing far too many men forward leaving Belgians acres of space to counter. No need to panic at 1-0 down, but that's what they did.

Belgium have proven me wrong so far today. They are so deadly on the counter attack.

I thought Brazil would win. Not looking likely.

So unlucky for you bhai. Tomorrow can you watch the games ?

There goes the final Latin American team too...

Belgium are looking solid enough at the back but there are 45 mins to go, anything can still happen.

The problem for Brazil is Kevn DB and Hazard, two of the great playmakers in world football are finding acres of space.

So if the score stays like this, it will be only European teams left!

Brazil could lose by 3 or 4 here I reckon, now they have no choice but to go for it, but that is playing right into Belgium's hands, they are so dangerous on the counter. Very naive display by Brazil, pretty sure they are going home, and it's mostly self inflicted.

Excellent move to bring on Bobby. Nearly scored with his toe.

Brazil are trying hard here as expected.

Costa has made a massive difference by providing some width and direct running. Brazil are knocking on the door here.

Brazil playing free flowing football of the past. Exhilarating to watch. Would be a pity if they got out.

What a miss by one of my fav players. :(

Brazil will get a couple of more chances yet.

I agree. I was critical after the first half, but they've been sensational in the second. I think they had two good shouts for a penalty, and they don't deserve to go out.

Well played Belgium. They deserve it. 2 teams who are going through golden generations competing in the semis.

What a superb match that was between Brazil and Belgium.

Fantastic team spirit by Belgium.

Brazil had their chances but I think the better team on the day won.

Do you think KDB has surpassed Neymar as the 3rd best player with this performance?

Pathetic world cup. No Brazil, no Argentina, no Spain and no Germany. Not gonna watch it anymore. All of my favourite teams got knocked out already.

That new Brazilian defender that scored the own goal is the reason behind today's loss. Him along with midfielder gutinio or whatever was absolutely pathetic throughout the match.

Gutinio should've been substituted rightf after the half time.

I don't. Far harder for attacking players to perform in front of a packed defence than when you are playing on the counter like Belgium were. You get all the freedom of the pitch to operate in.

Belgium has a terrible defense. Can't belive Brazil couldn't penetrae it.

He starts the counter himself with his passing. Nobody distributes the ball better.

Own goal decided it. Imo Brazil were better but goals matter.

Congrats to Belgium. Their keeper was outstanding, best peformance of the tournanment imo.

I am driving back tonight, so hopefully. Actually, since WC, I haven’t given a single day to family and here the game is between 8am to 5pm with games in every weekend. They deserved something as here summer is just like 10 weeks. Missed our champions 43 as well😝

I have a curiosity on last game tmro most among the 4 QFs. British media is puffing their heros as usual, but I haven’t seen anything from them to break a packed defense. Most goals from set pieces and that’s against Latin & African teams - this hoof ball won’t work against Sweden, who are master of that game. Alli and Sterling has to have a gala game and some one as No. 10 (Sterling is not no. 10, he is a runner, they have a head less chicken in playmaker’s shirt), has to better Frosberg.

Most of us are obsessed with EPL & La Liga where Scandinavians don’t play much, therefore most people don’t have any idea how good Sweden is. They are the last team to beat France in a qualifier, knocked Holland, then Italy & finally made KO stage at the expense of Germany!!!! - that’s 8 WC’s, 4 EUROs title and probably equal number of runners up cleared by them. And their coach got his tactics absolutely right against Mexico & Swiss team. I’ll go for 1-0 to the Swedes.

It’s a bit sad that WC has become Euro by SF stage, but can’t complain much - Latin teams lost fair & squire. Today, Uruguay didn’t have a shot at Lloris in last 60 minutes and Belgium got the game packed by 1st half. Neymar is lucky not to be booked for play acting.

Hazard & Kompany MoM for me - next time I believe people’ll be more respectful about Kompany, EPL and players performing their twice every weeks. It’s a men game there - physically & mentally. Players not playing in EPL has the biggest star missing in their dossier.

I think Brazil were denied a penalty, somehow it seems that refs are favoring European sides.

International soccer is different than club games - here 7-1 doesn’t happen often. Belgium got the game in pocket within first 30 minutes, and played exactly the way a pro team would have played - low line, keeping ball on opponents’ feet.

What you are said about Brazil domination isn’t the case here. Brazil pressed with 6 attackers + 2 wing backs, because they were behind - if it was 1-1, they won’t have have kept that much gap at back. Belgium didn’t press because 5-3 doesn’t give something more than 2-1.

I actually don’t go much on what jurno’s write with emotion - this is a wonderful Belgium team, which apart for Latin romantism only behind France and I know where most of their players starts at key spot for club soccer. Spanish league has an extra fascination for Latin players hence lots of Brazi/Argesl players play in their top teams - on player by player, Belgium squad is better - KDB or Hazard would score 25 goals from midgield if they had played in one of 2 mafias in what is basically a better version of Scottish league - great for Messi/CRs numbers.

Belgium didn’t play speedsters Carassco, Janujaj, Mertens & Batsuyi today, because it wasn’t required. They could have made it baseball like score had both sides went crazy, which happens in club game, but not in WC QF.

France to advance though - this team is youngest in WC; can become as good as anything that soccer history has seen.

Brazil had at least 3 open goal chances which on most days those players would finish with ease. They dominated the play in the second half. Of course they had to play like this but they were the more entertaing team in regards to attacking overall. They were also robbed of one penalty for sure. A draw would have been fair and imo in extra time Brazil would have scored again.

Great post as usual similar type of post Martem analysis is missing from the windies Bangladesh test thread you have not graced it with your presence

Japan has a very good side.. very impressive and under rated, in my opinion..

We are seeing a lot of under rated teams punching above their weight and established power houses under performing.. it’s made for some good viewing. Just enjoy the sport and not get too hung up over your favorite teams... I am for one glad that all the traditional big guns are knocked out..

I disagree slightly, for me Belgium got an unassailable lead through Brazil shooting themselves in the foot mostly. The own goal, followed by throwing the kitchen sink too early leaving themselves open to the counter, and that led to 2-0 when there was still plenty of time to get back in the game. Even then, they needed a couple of questionable penalty decisions to go in their favour to get the win. It's a good Belgium team, and well balanced, but I think they will be tested more by a team which is more tactically cautious.

There would have been definitely one had I watched the game or bothered for it during soccer World Cup. After almost a decade and 20k+ posts, I don’t think I need to tell you that I don’t hide from reality.

Trust me if it wasn’t Brazil, they won’t have played last 35 minutes with 11 men.

The two penalties that people are talking is just from emotion - first one was a delayed challenge by Kompany, but Jesus already lost the ball with his last touch and made full use of that late contact. 2nd one was a clear booking for Neymar - he was never going to reach that ball and the moment he know it, was on his flight, just got a touch from the hand of defender. I didn’t see any sympathy for Senegal when Mane was robbed for a penalty against Colombia, because it was a Latin team.

Look, I am a south Asian and Latin fan, but I am sick of their play acting. This has gone to a level that referees don’t bother anymore, but they don’t book Brazilians for FIFA backlash. Today in 1st game, FIFA put an Argentino in a game between France & Uruguay- make it German, Italian or English referee, people would have cried foul. A stronger referee would have made sure that Colombians behave properly against England... but it’s an US official, so must be biased for England. Suárez is former Liverpool player and one of my favourites - against Portugal, what he did was disgraceful.

Brazil pressed hard because they were behind - it’s 3 clean goals in the game & no tie breakers. Belgium won it fair & squire - it’s not a boxing game that you win on points.

It was Brazil that kept them 11 men standing. Domination don’t win you games in soccer. Latin players are great with ball on feet which makes them great to watch, but today the game Hazard played as no. 10 was of different class - every time Brazil had to foul him to get off the ball. He didn’t diserve to lose today.

And to think that Japan matched this Belgian team and was so close to knocking them out

I see it other way - Japan had couple of shots at goal and it stuck. In modern soccer, where average goal/game is 2; Belgium was facing elimination with 2 goals down & 35 minutes at hand - they scored 3. That shows the quality & character of this team. I see this game as Belgium knocked Brazil out in first half - how many times in WC or EURO you have seen a team leading 2-0 by half in KO games?

It was a great performance by Belgium in the first half, they made brazil look like panama, brazil did come back in the second half but that was because Belgium droped back otherwise the way the first half ended i though belgium were gona get 2/3 more easily.

Lots of cry babies talking about penalties but for the kompany one the ball was off the field when the contact was made so its a dead ball and neymars was just a dive, great referee.
