MOSCOW: Spain and Portugal meet for just the second time in the World Cup in one of the most intriguing games of the group stage. Spain is in chaos after firing its coach two days before Friday's match, and Portugal has been fending off distractions since star Cristiano Ronaldo hinted at an upcoming announcement about his future.

The Group B match in Sochi is at Fisht Olympic Stadium, the first World Cup game to be played at the venue.

The Spanish soccer federation fired coach Julen Lopetegui because he accepted a job to coach Real Madrid after the tournament. Lopetegui was unbeaten in his 20 matches in charge of the national team. Fernando Hierro, a former Spain player who had been acting as the team's sports director in Russia, will lead the country in his first major coaching job.

``I've been near a ball for 30 years,'' Hierro said while dismissing his lack of coaching experience.

Prior to the stunning firing of Lopetegui, it had been Portugal trying to stay focused on the match. Ronaldo hinted after the Champions League final he might leave Madrid, but said he wouldn't reveal his plans until he joined the national team. It's had the attention on Ronaldo instead of the match.

Portugal won the 2016 European Championship, has 13 players from that team in Russia, and looked much like that winning squad in a 3-0 preseason victory over Algeria.

Here's a look at the two other group stage games Friday:

EGYPT VS. URUGUAY
Egypt is making its first World Cup appearance in 28 years and its success will depend on the health of Mohamed Salah, the Liverpool star who injured his shoulder in the Champions League final.

If Salah can't play in the Group A match in Yekaterinburg, Egypt could struggle against the deep Uruguayan squad. Egypt may also start the oldest player in World Cup history if 45-year-old goalkeeper Essam El Hadary gets in the game.

Oscar Tabarez leads two-time champion Uruguay into his fourth World Cup _ most among all coaches in this year's tournament _ and third in a row. His teams have always made it out of the group stage, including a semifinal appearance in South Africa in 2010. That was the last time Uruguay moved past the round of 16 in its last six World Cup appearances.

MOROCCO VS. IRAN
This match of Group B underdogs at St. Petersburg Stadium, and Morocco is the only one of the teams that has ever made it out of group stage _ but that was in 1986.

Morocco is unbeaten in its last 12 matches, but only two of those games were against World Cup teams. Iran has lost twice in its last five friendlies and has never gotten past the first round.

But Iran has a two-pronged threat in Alireza Jahanbakhsh, the top scorer in the Dutch league, and Sardar Azmoun, who is fifth on Iran's all-time list with 23 goals despite being only 23 years old.

This match is expected to decide third place in Group B.

Excited for Portugal v Spain. Many of my University friends are Portuguese so will be rooting for them!

Jose Gimenez scored an 89th-minute header to secure a 1-0 win for Uruguay against Egypt in their World Cup opener on Friday, just as the North Africans appeared to have escaped with a point despite missing key striker Mohamed Salah.

Gimenez met a Carlos Sanchez free kick to score the goal that broke a run since 1960 of failing to win in the opening game of the World Cup finals.

Egypt came within minutes of earning a point largely thanks to the heroics of goalkeeper Mohamed El-Shenawy, who bravely dived to snatch the ball from Luis Suarez's feet and then flung himself through the air to tip a Edinson Cavani volley wide.

Uruguay gained in strength and purpose as the game progressed and it became clear that Salah, who injured his shoulder last month, was going to stay on the bench.

Before that, Egypt had rarely looked in trouble in a scrappy match at the less-than-packed Yekaterinburg Arena, though without Salah they also did little to threaten the Uruguay goal.

Suarez squandered a great first-half chance by firing into the side netting when the ball broke loose after a corner, and forced another good save from El-Shenawy in the opening moments of the second period.

Salah's absence came as a surprise after coach Hector Cuper had said on Thursday he was almost 100 percent certain to play.

The Liverpool striker, who turned 26 on Friday, injured his shoulder in the Champions League final against Real Madrid, and millions of Egyptians had been on tenterhooks to see if he would recover in time for the tournament.

He now has four more days to work on his fitness before Egypt face Russia in St Petersburg next Tuesday, while Uruguay will play Saudi Arabia the next day in Rostov.

Unlucky for Egypt. They seem to get tired towards the end of the game. Sureaz and Cavani were poor.

0-0 at half time between Morocco and Iran. Morocco bossed the game for the first 40 mins or so but quite a few chances for Iran in the last 5 or so.

low quality game - so scrappy - seems they want to hurt each other.

Second half was horrible so many injuries and substitutions, turned very quickly from football to American football. Everyone was out for blood.

After a chippy, unsatisfying game, Iran won its World Cup opener against Morocco on Friday in St. Petersburg, 1-0, thanks to an own goal in added time.

Trying to clear a last-second ball across the goalmouth, Aziz Bouhaddouz of Morocco dove for a header, and the ball went unerringly into the corner of his own net.

It was a hard result for Morocco, which played the more enterprising, offensive minded game. The team had several chances that fell short during the contest, but at least looked like getting a point, until the terrible finish.

Both teams, but especially Iran, engaged in a great deal of physical play, and numerous players from both sides hit the turf with injuries throughout.

While Morocco occasionally threatened to score, Iran failed to trouble the goal much at all, taking many of their shots from 40 yards or more and unsurprisingly failing to convert them.

The game concluded a disappointing week for Morocco, soccer-wise. The nation was beaten out for the right to host the 2026 World Cup to the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Though Iran now has three points in their group, they will have to be considered big underdogs to Spain and Portugal in the days ahead. It was Iran’s second ever World Cup win in 13 tries; they defeated the United States in 1998.

In the end, this poorly played game ended in the most appropriate fashion: with a substitute player putting the ball into the wrong net.

Wow!

What the heck as the de gea done?

Its 2-1 to Portugal now

This Spain versus Portugal match is one of the best game of football I have ever seen.

Incredible levels of skill and brilliance.

Two dull matches earlier but this match is thrilling. Vamos Portugal! Currently 3-2 to Spain though :(

RONALDO IS THE GOAT!
You could see the hunger in his eyes!
Yaar what a player he is...

Basically carried a pedestrian team on his shoulders to single-handedly earn a draw against one of the tournament favourites and the best defensive team in the tournament IMO. They could still yet win this here.

At 33 years of age.

He is THE GOAT bar none. Won't even entertain any arguments to the contrary.
