Hoping Iran to knock Portugal out!!!!!!

I think this is very much on the cards tonight. Iran were very good against Spain and often made them look poor. Iran need to find the back of the net, if they score the first goal tonight, Portugal may well be going home.

Half Time scores:

Spain 1-1 Morocco
Iran 0-1 Portugal

How the hell was that penalty!!!

Still Ronaldo’s penalty was saved

Justice

Iran have been superb and certainly no pushovers.

Technically very good and have been rather unlucky with some refereeing decisions.

Uff Ronaldo has escaped from getting a red card...

Morocco have scored their 2nd goal, beating Spain 2-1.

Morocco is the unluckiest team in this WC. Such a quality team missing out in group stages, because of an own goal in 94th minute against Iran. Against Portugal as well, they were better team.

They are losing out for conceding 2 soft goals in 5 minutes against Iran & Portugal, rest 270 minutes, they were actually better team against all 3 opponents!!! Their Manager is one of the best in world to work with developing sides.

Standard of African soccer is far better than Asia to be honest. Outside these 4, there is hardly any decent teams in Asia, but from CAF countries missing out are Algeria, Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Ghana, Congo, Mali & Burkina Faso ......

Referee collectively cheated to make sure that Spain doesn't miss out.

Iran get penalty via VAR, 1-1 now

Nearly the winner by Iran - just missed!

Full Time:

Spain 2-2 Morocco
Iran 1- Portugal (missed penalty, Ronaldo)

Well done to Iran and Morocco for excellent performances tonight and throughout the World Cup. A very tough group and very lucky Spain and Portugal.

Portugal to face Uruguay and lose badly anyone?

If they play like they did tonight I would expect Uruguay to thrash them... but Portugal have played like this before and have managed to go far, like the last Euros...

VAR is spoiling the fun for me even though it came to Iran’s aid today..

Agree if they play as they have been for the last two years including the Euro's Saurez and Cavanni will put them to the sword. Portugal were an average team but still won the Euro's so anything is possible in sport.

The problem with VAR is its up to the referee to use it. This makes little sense as some refs might not want to review their own decision and the teams are then in a fury. It should be like cricket, give the captain 20 seconds or so to call for a review. Have 2 reviews for each team and if they win the review they will continue keep the review.

I have always maintained that the refereeing is always biased against Non-European teams. I was right.

I think the game needs to change rules to match those of what you have in the playgrounds and in school matches. If the ball hits someone's hand it's a free kick/penalty. Doesn't matter if it's intentional or not. You'll soon see the players do what kids do, or at least what I did, make sure my hand couldn't be hit by the ball come what may.

Interpretation is the reaosn why there's so much controversy in football. Make it black and white, like in tennis and you won't get the complaints. No McEnroe-esque tirades these days because hawkeye is used, black and white decisions and umpire opinions aren't used.

DRS is more decisive in cricket than VAR in football, teams will complain after they ask for a review and if referees makes a decision against them because there is a lot of gray area in football e.g. whether handball was intentional or should he be send off? In cricket, umpire's call makes it clear and no teams can challenge that.

I don’t see Portugal go past Uruguay unless Ronaldo has a 9.5/10 match.

Most of the decisions in football are very clear with video technology esp with multiple cameras, 33 to be precise . It can only be used for goals, penalty decisions, red cards and cases of mistaken identity. Offside decisions leading to goals are the toughest to decide but there are 2 dedicated cameras positioned well for such decisions. Of course it's up to the ref to make the final call but this is the case right now and always has been in football.

Sad to to see my Muslim Brothers Iran get eliminated MenInG :(

Both Iran and Morocco have performed quiet well, unlucky to have been in a group with Spain and Portugal.

the referee looked pro-Portugal but he did give Iran a very soft penalty.

The othe rgame had a blatant red card for Pique not given, nor a 2nd yellow for a deliberate handball

I have always maintained that the refereeing is always biased against Non-European teams. I was right.

Actually no.

There are more European teams, therefore they get higher share of such calls, but in general it's the Big brands of soccer that gets the benefit from both sides of Atlantic, while it's often the poor Africans are at the receiving end.

For last 40 years at least, I can say the most benefited teams are Brazil, Argentina, Germany & France - particularly Argentina, whose 3 World Cup finals were blunt cheating - the 1978 one was fixed, 1986 one was clear cheating by the referee (not Maradona, any player would do such), but the referee was Algerian and if he thought that 5'5" Maradona jumped above the stressed hands of 6'2" Peter Shilton to head a common ball, he must had been drunk.

Then in 1990, Argentina should have been out at group stages after losing to Cameroon in first game - FIFA made sure that Old Soviet Union loses to them in 2nd game and then in 3rd game Arges needed to avoid defeat from another Communist country, Romania. Game ended 1-1, after Maradona stopped a goal bound head with stretched hands and Portuguese referee completely ignored that from 4 yards.

I have no bias against anyone (I am a French followed by Brazilian fan & I like every African team - I do agree Platini helped his country as much as possible, same can be said for Joao Havalanch), but I watch the game (s) with an open mind and I appreciate sportsmanship, similarly I call spades a spade. This constant criticism of FIFA for being pro European, mostly from Asian & Latin fans are absolutely base less.

For a record, 2002 WC, South Korea robbed their way to SF, after referees bluntly cheated Spain & Italy out of WC against them. Then, Beckham was sent off against Argentina, for some antics, which every Latin team does twice every half of a game. Henrey was sent off against Uruguay in 2002, on first offense, which should never had been more than a Yellow ......... I can go on.

One little suggestion I can give, if you may allow - during world cups, stop reading match reports from our south Asian jurnos/blogs .... watch the game and judge by yourself, Soccer is quite a simple game. Today, Spain's 2nd goal was deliberate cheating, because after watching reply, one can't give that goal. Similarly, Egypt was at receiving end in first game - FIFA had to do something to save the face of Saudi Arabia.

Was never a penalty. Iran were lucky to get that decision. Also the way they were trying to get Ronaldo sent off was a disgrace. Y'all talking about biased referee decisions they nearly got Ronaldo sent off and they got a penalty that wasn't.

Spain should beat Russia. Not expecting a classic between Portugal vs Uragauy. Think Portugal may edge it.

From amongst the teams to have been knocked out, both Morocco and Iran were by far the best. They can be proud of their respective efforts that they put in against both Portugal and Spain. A couple of very, very exciting teams that fought hard. A thing here or there and both or either of them could´ve been through to the next stage, especially a big chance that Iran missed in the 4th or the 5th minute of the Additional Time.

Well done to both! Here´s hoping to see you again in 2022, even better prepared.

I completely agree.Ronaldo deserved a yellow,which he got.That penalty was non-existent.

I think Spain will beat Russia narrowly ahile Uruguay will thrash Portugal.

Don't even think it was a yellow. The Iran player exaggerated.

Portugal vs Uragauy will be close. Portugal are more suited to playing on the counter attack. I think they may nick it.

Add 2018 as well - Nigeria robbed here.
