KARACHI: The FIH has suspended Pakistan from participating in 2019 FIH Pro Hockey League after PHF informed the world body that it intends to withdraw from first three games.

However, FIH feared that Pakistan’s withdrawal from matches would jeopardise the tournament. Subsequently, they had left with “no other option but to suspend Pakistan from the event”

“Pakistan will not take part in the 2019 FIH Pro League,” said FIH in a statement.

“The Pakistan Hockey Association informed FIH today that they were no longer able to play their first three games planned against Argentina, Australia and New Zealand, citing inevitable circumstances,” the statement adds.

Therefore, according to the statement, the International Hockey Federation has taken the decision to suspend the Asian team from the 2019 FIH Pro League in order not to jeopardize the regularity and the smooth delivery of the event.

FIH CEO Thierry Weil said expressed his regret over Pakistan’s decision to withdraw from first three games.

“It is regretful that Pakistan has decided only now to withdraw from the first games of the FIH Pro League. Consequently, FIH were left with no other option than suspending Pakistan from the rest of the competition’s season,” he said.

The non-participation of Pakistan has no impact on the competition format. The eight Men teams of the FIH Pro League will play each other on a home and away basis from January to June.

No one cares that can be seen in how many replies this thread has received. We are finished in Hockey until someone invests seriously in the Sport.

Some people saying hockey is nearly dead I would go on and say after this it is dead in Pakistan. I'm sure if the government wanted to they could have helped out but they don't care.

It's such a shame hockey is such a beautiful sport and we have a beautiful history in the game too.

We will rise again inshAllah. Once we get in a better economic situation, all these things will improve.

That's not how sports work, if not Cricket would had always been first sport in Aus and England or even West Indies, if the interest is lost coupled with economic issues it would be wiped off, why would current generations go into hockey seeing this Tate, and a generation miss would mean the next generation would know even less about it.

Also feels.like.Pakistan like all other South Asian countries.is getting massively into football..so hockey would be hard to.be kept.alive.

The gov claim that it has given 27 crores to the PHF last year alone. Perhaps i'm being a bit naive here but THAT is a lot of money.

I am sure there are still more kids playing hockey in Pakistan than Belgium, Canada, Ireland, Korea, Nz etc. Hockey is still the most popular sport in Gojra and adjoining areas.
With the European level infrastructure and proper system, a team from Gojra alone can compete at the top level.

Yeah that level of economic improvement takes years, with the population of Pakistan and productivity levels similar to South Asian countries almost impossible for next 30 years.

Good. No one cares about it in any other country either.

Actually they do, the level is different that's all, much more countries care hockey that would make cricket the sport jealous, but yes it's defn not the fav sport of any nation like cricket.

just because its not played in any other country doesn't mean you should abolish a sport altogether or dont even bother to fund it.

How many countries play curling?
How many countries play Lacrosse?
Infact, how many countries do play baseball?

The whole problem here is that our culture is a sports one. If we make a sports culture, by making school/collage/university leagues, only then could our performance be better. We could attract more people.

Having a national team isn't necessary here, as long as we could attract the sport and make a marketable domestic league.

One thing that needs to be admire about is India is their Pro Kabaddi League. Kabaddi was always a sport which was quite boring as it was not marketed nor broadcasted properly. Plus, it was only a punjabi sport.

One of the reasons for its success I read was that while the sport didn't had that many well known players, but before the PKL was formed, it was played qite alot in grass root settings.

Thus when PKL was formed and properly marketed, it was a hit.

Pakistani Broadcasters or investor should seriously think about investing in such leagues if PSL has been a success.

Even when we were a force in Hockey no channel outside the subcontinent was interested in covering this third rate Sport. For that reason it doesn't matter if or not we ever recover.

What do you mean? It is the national sport in Pakistan. And if other countries didn’t care about this they would not have been better than Pakistan. It may not be as popular as Other sports but it is still more «international» than cricket. Even in Latin America and far east Asia it is played at a very good level.

I have argued the same thing in the cricket forum, that cricket is more popular in the country than in most any other country bar India. It is pretty unimpressive that the PCB hasn't been able to turn that into a profitable venture at domestic level, something that would not only have kept the sport healthy during the WOT restrictions, but would have led to much better cricket players as well due to proper competition under pressure.

The same goes for hockey quite frankly. If it is self-sustaining and there is a fanbase that is willing to pay to ensure it, then fine, it can be the most popular game in the country for all I care. I'm speaking as an outsider, and for most of us it's a nothing game, so why should we care?

A German asked my brother about the national sport of Pakistan and he said field hockey. He didn't even know what that was, my brother googled it to show him and it came up Germany was the current champion :))

Shows what a good system can achieve even with a small fanbase.

What happened with their deal with Haier. Javed Afridi said he'd sponsor hockey team for at least next 2 years. Something like that. And aren't there no funds given by Government?

This. You don't need a whole nation playing a game, to succeed in it.
