Police have confirmed that a shooting took place at a Miami area high school on Wednesday afternoon, in what appears to be an active situation as the shooter remains at large.

“The school remains on lockdown, and law enforcement and the district’s special investigation unit are onsite,” the Broward County Public School District said in a statement to the local TV station WSVN, and the Margate Fire Department says there may be more, deeming the situation a "mass casualty incident."

Although Coral Springs police have not yet disclosed if anyone was injured in the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, local media outlet WSVN reported in a live broadcast that at least 20 people were injured.

Police have identified the suspected shooter but have not yet released his name. “They know his home address, they know where he works,” WSVN reports. He is believed to be wearing a burgundy shirt and black pants.

The Coral Springs PD is warning the public to stay away from the area for the time being, as the perimeter is “locked down.”

The department is also asking Douglas High students and faculty who are still inside the school to barricade themselves until police can free them. The Broward County Sheriff's Office says that it is sending deputies to the scene to support Coral Springs officers.

The shooting began shortly before dismissal, the school said, and students initially thought the evacuation was a fire drill. The shooting appears to have started in the freshman building.

One student told WSVN that when he first heard the shots, he thought it might be balloons popping because of all the balloons in the building for Valentine’s Day.

Video from the scene shows kids are still fleeing the school buildings, some running and some walking in larger groups with their hands in the air.

This is like a weekly thing here. There have been already a dozen shootings in schools this year. If Sandy Hook didn’t change anything, nothing will. Some people are even suggesting that teachers should have guns so they could take out the shooters.
 
RIP-Horrific for the kids and families involved. Nobody deserves to go through such horrors. But You can also bet your bottom dollar that Trump was hoping that it was muslim.

This business of shooting up schools seems to be particular to the US. Someone should do a study on whether there is something about American culture which is an underlying issue triggering these events.

at least 18 school shooting this year

according to research conducted by everytown for gun safety, this is at least the 18th shooting in the us this year that occurred on or around school premises.

Since 2013, there have been 291 reported school shootings in america, which averages out to about one per week.

On 24 january 2017, two people were killed and 17 injured at a high school in kentucky.

Florida School Shooting Suspect Nick Cruz Was ‘Creepy and Weird,’ Survivors Say

Nicolas Cruz, 19, was reportedly identified by law-enforcement sources as the suspected gunman who attacked Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida on Wednesday.

Cruz was taken into police custody following the shooting that killed at least 17 people—leaving traumatized students to recover with their families, and grieve for their fallen friends.

The teens who knew Cruz at Morgan High were stunned. They described Cruz as an awkward “outcast”—someone who had trouble fitting in at Douglas High. But they never saw a mass murderer in the making.

“I knew him to be passive aggressive but not violent. He was rude to people. He had an act up like he was tough. He never got into like physical fights with anyone but he did get into verbal arguments,” 17-year-old Ocean Parodie told The Daily Beast. “I just thought he dropped out of school, I didn't think he would do anything. He always kept a low profile.”

“He was definitely not accepted at our school socially. People saw him as someone who was different than the normal people at our school. At our school we have something called the Emo Gazebo. That's where all the kids that are considered weird or not accepted sat. Kids at the Emo Gazebo didn't even accept him there. He was just an outcast,” Parodie added.

“He always had his hair short. He always wore like really patriotic shirts that seemed really extreme, like hating on the Islamic religion. For example, he would say things such as like, he would degrade Islamic people as terrorists and bombers. I've seen him wear a Trump hat. I don't know if he ever said anything about women. He didn't have any friends,” he said.

"Most kids ignored him at school. They pushed him off to the side as if he was garbage. He screamed in class one time. He was upset and just started yelling at the teacher. The teacher was trying to help him and he just took it the wrong way,” Parodie continued.

Ocean's 15-year-old sister Milan Parodie, 15, had a similar impression of Cruz.

“I could tell he tried to be social at times but there was something off about him,” she said. “I never really saw him with many people. Girls thought he was creepy and weird. He was pretty pale with red hair. I didn't talk to him that much but from what I could tell he wasn't a nice kid. He wore a lot of black and was always alone.

“But he was always enthusiastic. I don't know how to put it but, like he never seemed depressed or sad. He was always a little crazy is the best way to put it.

“His attitude was always like, he was peppy but not in a good way, in a crazy way. He tried to look creepy or weird I think. He tried to talk to one of my girlfriends and he said she was cute but she was weirded out and he was bothering her.”

Broward County Sheriff Steve Israel told reporters the suspect was a former student of the school who was expelled for “disciplinary reasons.” Math teacher Jim Gard told the Miami Herald that Cruz was previously identified as a threat to the school in previous years.

“We were told last year that he wasn’t allowed on campus with a backpack on him,” Gard said. “There were problems with him last year threatening students, and I guess he was asked to leave campus.”

Broward superintendent Robert Runcie told reporters outside the school he was unaware of previous concerns about the student. “We received no warnings,” he said. “Potentially there could have been signs out there. But we didn't have any warning or phone calls or threats that were made.”

Ocean Parodie, for his part, felt bad for Cruz—and visited him after he was thrown out of Douglas High.

"After he got expelled he worked at a dollar store next to the movie theater. I went there and asked him what happened once. He said he was expelled and was happy that he was thrown out. I felt bad for him. I think just to treat someone differently how they look is wrong, so I tried to treat him like I treat everyone else.”

Parodie was in anatomy class on Monday afternoon when he saw his fellow students running away. Then he heard the fire alarm go off—then minutes before school was supposed to end.

“One stairway was crowded and so I went down a different stairway and I heard shots, that's when I knew something was up and it wasn't a drill. I made it outside. I was one of the first people to make it outside. Teachers were asking what was going on, the administrators didn't know what was going on. Once they had an idea of what's going on they sent us to the middle school next to our school. We walked near a canal to stay away from the school in case it showed up.”

A few hours later, Parodie realized the outcast that he had tried to befriend was the person who has just executed his schoolmates.

“I found out it was him when the news said who it was. I was like, 'oh man, can't believe it’s him.’”

It’s interesting though. There are loads of countries where it is easy to legally come into possession of a gun. In the UK we don’t realise just how restrictive our gun laws are compared to almost everywhere else.

Canada, France and Norway would be examples of other highly developed Western countries where they “loves their guns” and the general population owns millions of the things. But yet no ridiculous gun-related homicide rate. In the developed world, only in the US does this happen.

So it’s a cultural thing yes, but goes way beyond the legal availability of the weapons themselves. The Americans have a certain protective and obsessive mindset with their guns which is quite complex and unique.

Even if one day the federal government did buckle down and impose restrictions on acquisition, it would take decades for the homicide rate to fall significantly, so ingrained by now are these carefully fashioned instruments of death-dealing in the national psyche. There would be a massive black market and an even greater quantity of weird subcultures, exactly like when they banned alcohol with Prohibition.

(Contrary to popular belief there are also some individual US states that are quietly and gradually making it harder and harder to legally own guns - such as Connecticut and New York. Most states however are either strongly pro-2nd amendment or too passive to do anything about it. And the shootings continue.)

We are not fighting the Redcoats now so outdated parts of 2nd amendment should be amended. NRA hides behind 2nd amendment to lobby for favorable gun laws. Modern gun owners are certainly not the Minutemen fighting the Redcoats. Some “patriots” like to compare themselves to the Minutemen and think their guns will keep the big bad guberment in check. They are delusional, their weapons are no match for what the Federal Government has.

Canada's gun laws are far stricter than America's.

There is a mandatory mental health check, background check, and a waiting period of 28 days. Can't just walk into a local Walmart to pick one up like it's a toy.

Stricter laws yes but I was discussing levels of ownership.

There are more than 30 legally owned guns per 100 people in Canada which is one of the highest rates in the world. Same in France and Norway. But a low homicide rate.

My point is that the amount of guns owned by the public is not the only factor here. It is culture, mindset and national psyche that drives a homicide rate.
 
Can someone PLEASE explain to me the way the 2nd ammendment works and how it gives most citizens the right to own a gun? I'm extremely interested in this concept and would love to learn more.

You're spot on about the culture of gun ownership and everything that surrounds it. Just bizarre how the second amendment is religiously defended by a large chunk of their population.

There is a big misconception held by many Americans about the Second Amendment.

It did not explicitly guarantee an individual right to own a gun until the Supreme Court's decision in the 2008 District of Columbia v Heller case. That was after years of intense lobbying by the gun manufacturers, who see their sales skyrocket after every mass shooting, who bankrolled politicians and scholars to change the interpretation of the Constitution.

At the time the Second Amendment was written, America had no standing army but 13 separate state militias. There was a great suspicion of standing armies after the colonial experience under the British. It was also to preserve the slave patrol militias in the southern states. The Founding Fathers also could never have foreseen how lethal these guns would become as technology advanced. Its a complete anachronism.

The situation has become so crazy that Senate Republicans even opposed a ban in Dec 2015 on the sale of guns to those on the terrorist watchlist ! That's how much these corrupt Republicans (and some Democrats) are in the pockets of the NRA.
 
PARKLAND, Fla. — The suspect in a deadly rampage at a Florida high school is a troubled teenager who posted disturbing material on social media before the shooting spree that killed at least 17 people, according to a law enforcement official and former schoolmates.

Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel said the 19-year-old suspect, Nikolas Cruz, had been expelled from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School for ‘‘disciplinary reasons.’’

‘‘I don’t know the specifics,’’ the sheriff said.

However, Victoria Olvera, a 17-year-old junior, said Cruz was expelled last school year after a fight with his ex-girlfriend’s new boyfriend. She said Cruz had been abusive to his girlfriend.

School officials said Cruz was attending another school in Broward County after his expulsion.

Cruz’s mother Lynda Cruz died of pneumonia on Nov. 1 neighbors, friends and family members said, according to the Sun Sentinel. Cruz and her husband, who died of a heart attack several years ago, adopted Nikolas and his biological brother, Zachary, after the couple moved from Long Island in New York to Broward County.

The boys were left in the care of a family friend after their mother died, family member Barbara Kumbatovich, of Long Island, said.

Unhappy there, Nikolas Cruz asked to move in with a friend’s family in northwest Broward. The family agreed and Cruz moved in around Thanksgiving. According to the family’s lawyer, who did not identify them, they knew that Cruz owned the AR-15 but made him keep it locked up in a cabinet. He did have the key, however.

Jim Lewis said the family is devastated and didn’t see this coming. They are cooperating with authorities, he said.

Broward County Mayor Beam Furr said during an interview with CNN that the shooter was getting treatment at a mental health clinic for a while, but that he hadn’t been back to the clinic for more than a year.

‘‘It wasn’t like there wasn’t concern for him,’’ Furr said.

‘‘We try to keep our eyes out on those kids who aren’t connected ... Most teachers try to steer them toward some kind of connections. ... In this case, we didn’t find a way to connect with this kid,’’ Furr said.

Israel said investigators were dissecting the suspect’s social media posts.

‘‘And some of the things that have come to mind are very, very disturbing,’’ he added without elaborating.

Daniel Huerfano, a student who fled Wednesday’s attack, said he recognized Cruz from an Instagram photo in which Cruz posed with a gun in front of his face. Huerfano recalled Cruz as a shy student and remembered seeing him walking around with his lunch bag.

‘‘He was that weird kid that you see ... like a loner,’’ he added.

Dakota Mutchler, a 17-year-old junior, said he used to be close friends with Cruz but hadn’t seen him in more than a year following his expulsion from school.

‘‘He started progressively getting a little more weird,’’ Mutchler said.

Mutchler recalled Cruz posting on Instagram about killing animals and said he had talked about doing target practice in his backyard with a pellet gun.

‘‘He started going after one of my friends, threatening her, and I cut him off from there,’’ Mutchler said.

‘‘I think everyone had in their minds if anybody was going to do it, it was going to be him,’’ Mutchler said.

Broward County School District Superintendent Robert Runcie told reporters on Wednesday afternoon that he did not know of any threats posed by Cruz to the school.

‘‘Typically you see in these situations that there potentially could have been signs out there,’’ Runcie said. ‘‘I would be speculating at this point if there were, but we didn’t have any warnings. There weren’t any phone calls or threats that we know of that were made.’’

However, a teacher told The Miami Herald that Cruz may have been identified as a potential threat to other students. Jim Gard, a math teacher who said Cruz had been in his class last year, said he believes the school had sent out an email warning teachers that Cruz shouldn’t be allowed on campus with a backpack.

‘‘There were problems with him last year threatening students, and I guess he was asked to leave campus,’’ Gard said.

But, does those countries you have mentioned allow to own military type guns? I guess culture does play a role.
 
No doubt the Gun Lobby will say that had the students had guns then they could've defended themselves.

Only in USA do gun stocks move up after a shooting.

No words can describe my utter contempt and hatred of the modern day Republican Party who repeatedly turn a blind eye to kids getting massacred.

It is a wholly owned subsidiary of the NRA. Florida Senator Marco Rubio is offering his crocodile tears to his constituents yet has received MILLIONS from the NRA who oppose even moderate, sensible gun control legislation.

What will it take for the penny to drop ? Newtown wasn't enough to pass serious gun safety legislation, Orlando wasn't enough, Vegas wasn't enough, Aurora wasn't enough. How many more deaths of innocents until you offer something other than your USELESS "thoughts and prayers" ?

And if YOU vote for the Republican Party or a corporate/NRA sellout Democrat - then YOU have blood of these kids on your hands too. What kind of monstrous society and a Congress prioritises the easy access of weaponry over the lives of kids ?

This is the Party that blocks universal background checks; that overturned an Obama-era rule that people receiving Social Security checks for mental illnesses were to be referred to the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System; that made it easier for fugitives to buy weapons; that won't fund CDC research into gun violence; and opposed in the Senate a ban on people on the TERROR WATCHLIST to purchase firearms.

To me this is a media problem. The media is showing this guys face 24/7, going over his entire life his family, his religion, his hobbies ect ect... Do we really need to know all of that? aren't they making him an important figure when he was just some loser who couldn't get along with people in his life?

I cringe after every time an incident like this happens the media vindicates these people and their plan to go out with a bang so everyone knows their name. Now the next guy who is having trouble in life will think of doing something like this when he's having a bad day and this is a chain reaction that just won't stop.

We already know there is no way to know what someone is thinking inside, so telling all these stories about his behavior and what not does not help catch the next guy, it actually helps them make better plans so they cannot be traced. I seriously thought we would've learned something by now but I guess the media is more interested in cashing in these stories. Everything really just comes down to dollar dollar bill, after all this is America.

My suggestion has been that the shooter does not get named, whoever it is just gets deleted, removed and police/media are given 10 different fake identities of who the suspect might be so the public never finds out and anyone planning something like this knows they will die in vein and no, they will never get famous.
 
This is really sad and horrific. Every week we hear about a gun shooting in schools in America. This has become an epidemic. How are people going to be confident of sending the children to school. America seems to have no solution to this problem and we have innocent children dying every week. A guy was expelled from school for whatever may be the reason, how does that warrant reporting to authorities. Is Mr trump saying that every person expelled from school should be reported to the authorities? Just because few people think someone is weird doesn't mean he needs to be reported.

I think he passed several executive orders to keep mentally destable people from getting guns. I heard somewhere that one of the first things DJT did after getting to the white house was eliminating those executive orders.

Obama was atleast sincere about the situation, this guy comes and reads a script because everyone including his staff knows he would go off topic and blame it on democrats for not building a wall or something. Complete lack of leadership and buffoons in DC should take the full blame.

Nonetheless, the number of Obama gun laws that made it through Congress during his two terms in office comes in at only two, and neither placed additional restrictions on gun owners. In fact, the two gun laws signed by Obama actually expanded the rights of gun owners in the United States. The problem isn't just guns, it's history of bloodshed and hate stemming from white nationalism. People rant against Radical Islam yet ignore white nationalism, it's the single biggest killer of humanity since the dawn of man.

Don't know about others, but I feel more pain and rage when my co religionist is killed by the others. When my co religionists kill each other, I feel sad but that is an internal matter. So I can empathize with it.

And who is going to guarantee the teachers won't lose their mind? I had a sub teacher in HS who was found with a decapitated head in the trunk of his car....
 
We had another shooting at Texas Roadhouse yesterday, 5 people including including a 6 year old lost their lives. Any solution other than banning the guns is useless.

In future we might have teacher mass shooters and Trump will be responsible for it. Mass shooting is one thing, there can be accidental discharges or the students might steal the guns from teachers.

1) What if the teacher gets mad and now has open access to a firearm?
2) Which teacher will actually confront a shooter that has an assault rifle/weapon?
3) How is it logical to solve a gun problem by bringing more guns into the mix?
