What's new

For the first time in a long time, that seemed like England/Australia rather than Pakistan

I mean, 93 run partnership off 6.5 overs. That's 41 balls. I haven't seen such explosive batting unless I see Stokes, Buttler, Warner play. Is this a sign of better things to come? And a sign that 'stability' in Azhar is inferior to explisiveness in Fakhar, Sharjeel?

Numbers:
Faheem: 64(30), SR 233; 4s: 4, 6s: 4
Hasan Ali: 27(15), SR 180; 4s: 2, 6s: 1

This thread could've easily been a complaint on team selection - and in a way it is - but with Imad, Faheem and Hasan Ali in at 7, 8, 9 that is quite a solid tail.

Can we win matches with solely 3-9? (excluding openers cos they're useless unless Sarf promotes himself, or Hafeez does). I doubt the management will do such a thing though and I fully expect our XI to be:
Shehzad
Azhar
Babar
Hafeez
Malik
Sarfraz
Imad
Faheem
Hasan Ali
Shadab Khan/J Khan
Amir

Chill bro, we chased 75 of the last 6 overs against Ind in 2012 T20 Cup warm up
Chased 89 of 10 with 3 wickets remaining v ireland before CT 2013
and chased 251 v England after being 78/4 from 22 overs in WC 2015 warmup

What this means is that we can only do these feats when nothing is at stake and the pressure is off.

Oh I remember that match, King Kami batted like Viv Richards and won from a shocking position..

That's when I thought this could be the tournament where Pakistan would defeat India first time in a WC but it wasn't to be. India won the WC match comfortably and the streak is still unbroken.

Indeed, but do you have faith in our batting when it comes to the CT? Or will it be the same old same old 230/8 we saw today?

I have no faith, We will probably score like 270-280 while our opposition will be scoring in excess of 300

Good point. But it will still be a big confidence-boost for Pakistan, which is generally considered as a team that cant chase down big totals

What you said you can say after every one of them wins in the above instances.

Lol 1 warm up win against the mighty B.A.N.G.L.A.D.E.S.H. and people are loosing their minds

It's was as pointless a game as any gully mohalla match guys !!! Chillax on the celebrations ........

It proves one point though that you won't win much with stability alone. Babar, Sarfraz and Malik are sufficient for that role. Pakistan need explosive openers. What is the point of batting depth when your lower order hardly gets balls to hit?

People have been making too much out of this match

I understand both your views. History will see this as a normal win for Pakistan and I get that. But when was the last time you saw an 8 and 9 come out to bat for Pakistan and wreck havoc? I don't care if we're vsing Bangladesh, Australia or Canada: our tailenders have hardly been capable of such things in the recent past. At least we're competing with modern teams in that you have to bat deep. More celebrating the brute force than actual result.

This. Openers need to be told to get on with it. Babar can anchor. If he fails then sarf/malik.
InshaAllah this will click English style soon!
Looks like there is plenty in the shed with Amir number 10

What today's match showed is that we need to get rid of Azhar Ali and Muhammad Hafeez. Phateechar players who would have been out of place in ODIs even in 1980s.

Yesterday's match can be the turning point in Pakistan Cricket. Really happy for you guys, congrats. :salute

Why? Openers? Lack of quality fast bowling? No finisher? Or all 3?

Openers and no finishers basically. Other teams have Roy, Hales, De kock, Warner opening for them, while we have Azhar and Shahzad. We still live in the fantasy that opening is a tough job in ODI cricket so we need specialist openers and when its quite the opposite. And we have no power hitters at the bottom.

You do realize it's a warm up match where you can play an extended lineup?

I think we should have a vote on whether or not it was the most iconic practice match ever played. :don

Nah. Most iconic warm-up was hands down the 2012 India-Pakistan clash where Kamran Akmal absolutely destroyed India.

It's a warm game up, relax. Let's see what happens in the tournament. Still not confident in our top order.

Still doesn't take away from the fact that: 1) 10 wickets must be taken, 2) we weren't going to see all batters come out to bat.

Like I said, brute force rather than result. More that we haven't witnessed anything like this from Afridi's retirement onwards.

Come back when Inda have made such a victory from the jaws of defeat with your 9th wicket partnership putting on 91 to win the match.

Regardless if it was a warm up match, it's international cricket and your 9th batsman managed to do what your other 8 couldn't: whack it out the park.

Nothing special will be made of the match: as I said previously history will state a Pak W and nothing more. But clearly it was something a lot more.

At least we don't have a tail that starts at 7 like we usually do.

Yep that is true. But ultimately it's your top order that will do the bulk of the scoring and they will have to ensure that the innings starts well.

Top order will do better if Fakhar is partnered with Shehzad. Shehzad needs to play as he did vs Bangladesh. He has the potential to play aggressive knocks.

Fakhar and Shehzad is the pair I would go for.
