The police in Albertville, a city in southeast France, raided the residences of four school children for "glorifying terrorism" because the 10-year-olds did not approve of derogatory caricatures of Prophet Muhammad, the last messenger of God, according to the Muslim faith.

During a counselling session France reportedly conducted in public schools, three Muslim students of Turkish origin and one of Arab descent were asked if they were sorry for the murder of Samuel Paty, a French schoolteacher who was beheaded by a teenager last month for displaying derogatory cartoons of the prophet.

The trio said they condemned Paty's murder, but also did not approve of the insensitive caricatures.

After the end of the counselling session, the French police raided their homes. Speaking to TRT World, one of the students' fathers recalls the terrifying raid they suffered on Thursday morning shortly before 7 am, “We woke up with armed police at our doors. Around 10 of them stormed into our house with long barreled weapons. Children were awakened from their sleep and they gathered us in the living room in our pyjamas. They kept us seated as they searched through the house but my daughter’s room more diligently, checking her books and even taking pictures of Islamic calligraphy frames we have on our walls.”

Police took his daughter EY to the station on charges of "glorification of terrorism." They asked her parents to come to the station at 9 am for questioning.

“Police questioned us, me and my wife for two hours each asking ‘do you go to mosque for praying? If so, do you take your children with you? Do you have any duty at the mosque? What do you think about the caricatures?’ et cetera. I told them, our prophet is dear to all of us, all the Muslims and we do not find it appropriate. But I also told them, we do not support the killing of the teacher.”

EY’s father says his wife and the rest of the family were asked the same questions during the interrogation.

“We were treated like terrorists. They took our mugshots, fingerprints and they even asked my wife to remove her headscarf for photographs. We have been living here for the past 20 years with no criminal record. Neither of my four children ever had any problems at school or with police. I was even asked about my opinion on the recent Erdogan-Macron dispute during my questioning. I urged the French police not to involve us in their politics.”

The parents were not allowed to see their daughter at the police station. EY was released at around 5:30 pm Thursday evening. Her father says, “She was crying as the police took her in the morning. Later she was taken to the police station where she was questioned and filmed through her interrogation. She was kept almost 11 hours there until the judicial decision for her release. She had to sign her statement but the police refused to give us a copy of any documentation.”

This is insane , I don’t think even police in South Asia stoop to the point of raiding and picking up kids from their homes. Also why do they need 10 armed officers to “detain” a child?

You can class this as extremism to a citizen's privacy.

They were investigating a murder, everyone involved and around the murder will be interviewed, this is a normal procedure in investigating a murder.

Even if the mosque they attend, or area they live in, is known for some extremist sentiment, this is unacceptable. A child shouldn't be interrogated, and their biases should be kept aside. I agree with cracking down on extremism, obviously, but I feel like this is a sure-fire way to push people down the rabbit hole...

You really think its acceptable for armed police to take away crying kids to the police station without their parents present and interrogate and keep them there for several hours?

What kind of psychos are the French Police.

Storming in and interrogating young children is completely unacceptable, there is no justification for it.

Not shocked at all. This is France.

I am glad I don't live in France.

France and fascism kind of go hand in hand. Afterall this nation collaborated with the murder of 6 million Jews, then suddenly at the end of the war everyone was anti nazi. They have also been anti Muslim for over a 1000 years. Why do we expect anything different from them and their supporters?

of course he does. He justifies any tactic against Muslims because he is a right wing islamaphobe.

Secular extremist hellhole.

Muslims in France need to stand up to this by aligning themselves with French anti-facists, othewise this will only get worse.

French are trying to create extremism by their own extremist actions. I think the French lowlife government will also want attacks to further their government.

If this was US, the cops would be looking down the barrel into a multi-million dollar lawsuit right now. Agreed it is a terrorism investigation, but raiding & detaining 10 year olds for 11 hours for expressing an opinion??

Those kids were Muslims so for people like him it’s fine.

People like him have unfortunately been so brainwashed that they feel hate even for little children just because of their religion.

Congrats, thats how new terrorists develops in society if that is a normal procedure. Goodluck with your procedure.

Ah, the French.

They consider themselves the connoisseur coachmen of culture in Western civilization and have thus, produced nothing of note since Pasteur.

Silly point. Marie Curie? Yann LeCunn (leading AI researcher)? Those are off the top of my head, and I'm no historian. France is a bit too edgy atheist, I agree, but to say they've produced nothing is ridiculous.

It was not meant to be taken literally. Of course, every nation produces individuals of great achievement; look at Pakistan, they have had outstanding prospects.

But just because a nation produces talented individuals, does not garner it respect on the world stage. To do so, it requires more than mere academic excellence. Furthermore, the individuals you mentioned are noteworthy but not on the scale of a Pasteur. (And Curie was born in the 19th century.)

Let the kids be kids.

Better to concentrate on providing them with proper education in the school and help foster their critical thinking, than making them superficially say the correct words from your POV, when the whole problematic is far beyond their current thinking capability.

They don’t care about educating kids, this is more about asserting power and trying to demean the kids and their family.

This is not too different from religious extremist in India forcing people to chant religious slogans. This is more subtle though.

France is really grappling with dangerous extremism, such as 10 year-old children disliking purposefully inflammatory cartoons insulting their religion? These people have no idea what they're doing.
