Veteran Indian opening batsman Gautam Gambhir is set to contest in the next general elections from Delhi on a ticket from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), according to reports. BJP is eager to have Gambhir on board for the elections, as per a report in national daily – Dainik Jagaran.

The ruling party in the state is Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) at the moment. The BJP hasn’t been able to come to power in Delhi for several years.

If Gambhir joins the BJP, he will follow cricketers Mohammad Azharuddin and Navjot Singh Sindhu in the political field.

Apart from achieving great heights on the cricket field, Gambhir has worked for public welfare as well. He has made several donations for the benefit of the Indian Army.

Gambhir, who played his last Test match against England in 2016, has scored 4,154 in 58 Tests and 5,238 runs in 147 ODIs. The Delhi batsman scored 97 runs in the 2011 World Cup final against Sri Lanka and 75 in the World T20 final against Pakistan in 2007. India won both the titles under the captaincy of MS Dhoni.

Gambhir has been a successful captain in the Indian Premier League, leading the Kolkata Knight Riders to two titles in 2012 and 2014.

As the natural party of the patriots and those who put the nation above everything else, Gambhir has come to the right place. Hope to see him win the coming elections.

More like national party of Anti Pakistani & extremists.

Match made in heaven. BJP are always looking for angry little Indian men to monger hate and rile up the masses so this was always the natural way of things to be.

So it was all part of a plan. All those patriotic statements and attacking Afridi. Well done Gauti. :inti If anyone is not aware he also has a restaurant named 'Hawalat' here in Delhi. :misbah

Winning an election in a democratic country like India is a normal thing.

I am not talking about winning a single seat, was talking about becoming PM which is what IK did. I actually agreed with your point, GG isn't copying Imran Khan and rightly so cause copying him would be somewhat delusional unless he is also willing to put in 20+ years of struggle.

If a chai wala can do it, why can't Gambhir?

True anyone can be PM if they are willing to put in the time and effort. Can you see Gambhir putting in 20/30 years as a politician?

Good on him, BJP Delhi is the weakest of its front in North India, hopefully he can give them some credibility.

Has chosen the right party to join, I thought he would be joining Army and wanted to be posted in Kashmir :)

I hope he does something for us Hindus who have been living like a minority in our own country. Also uphold the law of Dharma as the bad times our country is going through is a warning from Lord Almighty Bhagwan ji that we have strayed from the true path.

If true, it's the BJP that's set to gain from this, not the other way round.

For a party filled with two-faced jingos, someone like Gambhir who sticks to what he truly believes in is a lucky boon.

Gambhir speaks his mind & stick to his ideology. Pro nationalist but not an extreamist in my opinion. In some ways he is similar to ganguly.
I hope he does not become a chameleon like most of politicians who are only interested in mud slinging tactics to win votes.

Bjp also bringed kiran bedi as wild card in last election but they ended up losing it by huge 67-3 margin.

Gambhir is a nationalist and not an extremist. Learn to differentiate between the two.

Perfect party for him to join.

Btw it’s strange that an active cricketer is headed in into politics so early.

Nothing surprising, "aspirational" Indians are connected with BJP. That's BJP core vote group. In India, educated people prefer BJP...

I have no idea what an Indian nationalist is to be fair. On the one hand they want a united India from east to west, on the other they seem happy to chop bits off and hand them over as Islamic republics aka Bangladesh and Pakistan. It seems hard to reconcile, the old regional states of Kashmir, Maharashtra, Punjab, Bengal etc. made more sense.

Imran Khan proving to be an inspiration to some to enter politics.

Plenty of cricketers have joined politics in India in the past, it has nothing to do with Imran Khan lol.

You are probably right, Gambhir making all these hyper "patriotic" tweets shows that he was probably looking to join politics for a long time and his decision has nothing to do with Imran Khan.

Sure, but why are you so hot under the collar about it?

Match made in heaven. An extremist party for an extremist fellow.

Indian cricketers have tried their hand in politics too but none of them have the vision, determination, charisma and leadership skills of Imran. I doubt any of them would make any significant dent let alone Imran Khan level impact on India's politics.

I remember how Tendulkar was accused of eating his parliament funds. :))

Do you have any source for the claims that Gambhir is extremist and Tendulkar was accused of eating his parliament funds?

Anti Muslim comments? Like?

I remember he liked a tweet which said something along the lines of Muslims being so violent that they would keep fighting even if only one was left on earth. It is probably still in his liked tweets but it was a year or so ago.

That is not an anti muslim comment, but a criticism. It is indeed a paradox in Islamic world, that muslims are divided against each other when it was introduced as a unifying force.
