Azharuddin may have fixed matches but that does not wipe away his accomplishments for India.

It's not bigotry given his views on fixers has been consistent be it azharuddin or jadeja or prabhakar.

there was no proof that he fixed matches...the only thing he accepted was that he passed on the pitch report and what he would do if won the toss.

He accepted on record that he fixed 3-4 matches for Anees Abraham for which phone tapes were available with CBI. His contention was that he fixed only those 4 matches. CBI report clearly said that he accepted fixing these 4 matches but there's reason to believe that he fixed more matches as well. Since concrete evidence was shown to him on these 4 matches, he accepted.

U know this thread has been an eye opener for me as well. When Azhar became MP or Jadeja got back to commentary or a movie was made of Azhar, I always thought it was because of their political clout or the fact that there are so many uneducated fans in India, that these cricketers have got their way back in society.

This forum reveal that it's not just lack of education or limited access to facts or religion that condition people's mind and stops them from differentiating between right or wrong, even the sane educated ones are more or less immune to whether or not the person is corrupt, they are emotional enough to like the person regardless.

One thing is clear, the likes of Azharuddin and Jadeja enjoy the same fame, adulation in India today as they did in their playing days. Heck Jadeja even came in an Indian film, a film was made on Azharrudin's life and Azharrudin even became an MP and has been allowed coaching assignments and has been called as an expert. Even Jadeja has been allowed to a host on some tv programs and act as an expert.

In contrast we have completely isolated Salim Malik as if he had made no contribution to Pakistan Cricket at all.

Salim Malik was a fine player for Pakistan. It’s sad that you have completely isolated him.

My views on fixing in the 1990s are documented above. Everyone was on it without understanding the repercussions. Today fixing is limited to fringe players. No top player would get involved.

Everyone missing the point here....so let me elaborate. ACB (Association of Cricket in Bengal) is run by Trinomool supporters who is a ruling party in West Bengal. Even Ganguly is a TMC supporter. Now, its known to all that TMCc votebanks are minorities living in bengal, especially muslims. Hence Mamta Didi got so nervous when BJP asked to send back all illegal immegrants back to BD bcoz they are her vote banks.

With election coming up in 2019 and with public sentiments strongly against her, she is playing age old minority appeasement politics by inviting Azharuddin to ring the bell at eden gardens. And she has done this before as well. Remember 2016 t20 wc game against Pak when ACB reduced the game to 18 overs so that Mamta Didi can felicitate a bunch of ex Pak cricketers?

Why we dont see any such tamasha in other venues? Why this only happens in Eden Gardens? Maybe outsiders will find it shocking but we bengalis know the purpose behind asking Azhar to ring the bell.

What Gambhir said is absolutely right. Yes, it may be politically motivated as he aspires to join BJP but this entire bell ringing event was a political gimmic set up my ACB/Momta Didi just before elections.
