Days after the latest GDP (Gross Domestic Product) figures pointed at a deeper economic slowdown, a BJP leader said in parliament that in future, "GDP will stop being relevant". Whether people are happy is more important than GDP, the BJP's Nishikant Dubey said in Lok Sabha on Monday.
"GDP came in 1934; there was no GDP before that. (Economist Simon) Kuznet said it is not the ultimate truth to believe the GDP as Bible, Ramayan or Mahabharat. In the future, GDP will not be of much use as an economic indicator," Nishikant Dubey said, participating in a discussion on the Taxation Law Amendment Bill. "Whoever talks about the GDP is wrong. GDP has no relevance to this country," he insisted.

He went on to explain that "the new theory" is whether sustainable economic welfare had reached the last man in the queue. "Sustainable development, happiness is more important than GDP," the BJP MP said in response to Congress attacks on the government over the latest GDP shock.

The Congress took a dig at Mr Dubey over his remarks with the party's chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala wriitng on Twitter: "God save us from such novice economists of New India!"

On Friday, GDP figures of the July-September quarter dropped to a six-year-low of 4.5 per cent, the worst since 2013, because of a combination of low manufacturing, agriculture and mining activity. Data showed consumer demand, private investment and exports all struggling.

The trend of subdued consumption is cited by experts as a big reason for the successive fall in GDP growth rate. All the major sectors, including auto, capital goods, banks, consumer durables, FMCG and real estate have been hit. Last year in the same quarter the GDP growth was at seven per cent.

lol, whatever next?

Elections are not required since event manager is the default choice of electorate?

Bharat Jalao Party is in full form by giving space and time to such 'economists'. However, the problem lies elsewhere. They are being led by an economist par excellence, the event manager!! No wonder we're going down in a bottomless pit.

Had they found time and means to fudge GDP figures once more, these would've been Ramayana & Mahabharata for them!!

And to think we've crores still following these creatures religiously!! Mota bhai said in India Today conclave yesterday that India is still the fastest growing economy!!

Well!!

Can't even quote Happiness quotient cuz no one is really happy here anyway.

Angry, frustrated, jobless. Yes.

Well, he is not entirely wrong there. GDP alone reflects little of average citizen's progress. We had Musharraf era where GDP went high but poors were crushed. Bangladesh right now is a living example of this.

Way to miss the point of this thread!

Wanted to convey that had GDP figures for last quarter were good, they won't stopped parading them as be all and end all! People's happiness by damned!

The BJP and IQ don't get along well.

Never have since Vajpayee.

The fact that Rahul Bajaj is being hailed for having the guts to ask this shows how pathetic we've become.

And BJP came in since 1980s, there was no BJP before that but Congress ..

Tell us something we do not know.

Every man and his dog outside of India knows GDP is not everything. Now that's India's GDP growth has plummeted by 50%, Hindutva warriors are changing tune.

the thread title doesnt make any sense and has any relevant to the post. I understand it is the direct title from the article but at least, it should be edited out to bring some sense.

New Delhi: Trolled over his remark that Gross Domestic Product figures would lose their relevance in time, BJP MP Nishikant Dubey on Tuesday urged the centre to frame laws barring people from making objectionable remarks on parliamentarians on social media. The politician claimed in the Lok Sabha that personal attacks were made against him, and asked Speaker Om Birla to protect him and other lawmakers in the house.
"I seek your protection sir (Lok Sabha Speaker). When the Constitution was made it was mentioned in Article 105 and 105 (2) that whatever would be discussed in the House, the reporting of the matter would be proper, and any member would be free to put his point without any fear and partiality. Social media and breaking news were not there when Article 105 was made," he was quoted by news agency IANS as saying in parliament.

"I personally urge the government through you (Lok Sabha Speaker) that a law should be made to ban social media to stop such activities," he added.

Mr Dubey, MP from Jharkhand's Godda constituency, while participating in a discussion on a bill on Monday, had said the GDP was not the ultimate truth.

"GDP came in 1934; there was no GDP before that. (Economist Simon) Kuznet said it is not the ultimate truth to believe the GDP as Bible, Ramayan or Mahabharat. In the future, GDP will not be of much use as an economic indicator," he had said.

He was trolled for the remark on Twitter.

lol, these sanghis have very thin skins and can't take any criticism from anyone, exemplified by no one else but the event manager himself.

BJP is so blessed with so many nobodies getting prominence due to our electorate being dumb enough to elect them multiple times.

a BJP leader putting the bible and mahabharat on the same pedestal. a resounding slap for those who called them religious bigots.

I don't see anything wrong if some person doesn't count GDP as the basic pillar of relevance to growth. Different theories and hypothesis puts different elements into different preferential order.

Its like stating a string theory physicist telling quantum theory has weaknesses and vice versa. It's pretty common in any basic science field.

Hope you typed that with a straight face...

If the GDP figures were particularly high you would see the same lot running around bragging and posturing about it till we were sick of it. Hypocrites !

THIS!

As I said earlier, mota bhai is still saying that India is still the highest growing economy in world! I can only laugh at sanghis' propensity to lie so blatantly!
