General Election 2017 live: Britain goes to the polls

Wow, UKIP got more than Tories :)))

Is this in line with the exit poll?
Worth noting that swing to Labour in Newcastle and Sunderland less than the exit poll suggests.

So maybe exit polls are overstating Labour support.

But its early days, these are safe Labour seats anyway.

Just a rider to #81 - actually in Sunderland there's a slight swing to the Conservatives from Labour !

So the exit polls could be off by a fair bit here. This is will be a long night where the parties will be hanging on every constituency result.

I wonder if there's an element of anti-incumbency there. Usually it manifests itself nationally, but it could well have a local flavor too. Whoever the local MP was may be less popular now than they were in 2015.

I'm clutching at straws really. I was hoping against hope for an outright Labour win.

KingKhanWC what are the odds on JC in no.10 after forming a progressive alliance or is he up against it now unless the exit poll was not accurate and Labour somehow shock the world

I think he should do whatever it takes to get into no.10. Even in a minority government the message will be sent loud and clear people have had enough of the criminal elite.

He can call another election after Brexit deals, more fun to be had. :yk3

Final point - Tories would have first dibs on forming a coalition being the largest party but as mentioned, Lib Dems are already ruling out another deal whilst Greens, SNP and Plaid would NEVER prop up the Tories.

They'd have to get support from the Unionist parties of Northern Ireland, such as the right-wing headbangers in the DUP and UUP.

Robert - This would be a great night for Tim Farron and the Lib Dems ! Looks like it'll be a bigger taxi cab to fit all their MPs in instead of a small one :p

Thanks for this.

Will be interesting to see what happens with the swing seats.

Boris Johnson could emerge from this as the front runner for Tory leader. What if the Tories do form a government, but May is so weakened that she resigns, and Boris ends up elected party leader... and PM?

Well we will need a joint UK-American vote to decide the worst hair between him and Trump. :trump2

exit polls seem to be way out with these north east seats, perhaps they're outliers

Labour holds Sunderland Central but another seat showing a better result for the Tories than predicted by the exit poll...

Maybe its the effect of Tories hoovering up Ukip/Leave voters.

Amber Rudd could lose Hastings, Greens and Labour joint partnership to get her out.

What a shame...not.

Sinn Fein to end abstentionism and join Corbyn to give them the 4 seats needed to make a government. Corbyn nominates Adams as PM, UK joins United Ireland :asif:

I think the exit poll has not picked up postal voters that may have voted for the Tories outside of London. Hopefully the Sunderland result is not a sign of things to come.

What's more tortuous for you guys I reckon, watching Pakistan chase 220 on a seaming track or this election :yk

better result for Labour than expected in Swindon, could be north/south divide, maybe Corbyn is not that attractive to northern traditional Labour voters surprisingly.

Paul Waugh of the Huffington Post cites a source saying Labour may have gained Kensington !

I repeat - Kensington ! One of the wealthiest parts of the country. Must be an anti-Brexit vote.

Regardless of the outcome, the youngster beauties came out in their numbers! and this could be huge moving forward in the future because if their force continues to strengthens then party's beyond Labour will need to appease them a lot more instead of blacklisting the future every time

there's two kensington's, if it's north kensington I used to live there and used to be a Labour seat.

Just any match involving Ireland and Pakistan tbh, I expect a better fight from your lads but they make things so boring :( spank after spank after spank! believe it or not it's actually quiet entertaining watching Pakistan bat when they're up against it :yk

Ooooooh a Junaids sighting :broad what do you make of all this :yk3
I'm loving it.

I may not Vote Labour, but I think it's crucial that Labour stands for a properly resourced NHS, free university and social justice.

Our democracy has been badly damaged by Blair and Clegg running Tory Light policies.

If it weren't for Corbyn's past embrace of Hamas and the IRA I think Labour would have won.

SNP and Labour together 313!

Do you think if it goes to a vote to MP's from other parties, will they back Labour to form a minority government?

Yes as SNP, Plaid, SDLP, Greens and Lib Dems are more ideologically aligned with Labour than the Tories. There's no way any of those parties would prop up a Tory government, not even Lib Dems who got their fingers burnt after their last experience.

That would be the progressive alliance. But Tories will be the largest party and so will have first dibs on trying to form a government, they could rely on Ulster Unionists from Northern Ireland.

YouGov have got 5/5 results right when you look at the swing of the votes.

Are the Ulster Unionists far right and will Cons accept their support? Regarding what Makhor has mentioned.

Markhor not sure if you caught this on sky news:

You're right there, I know a few people who refused to vote for him due to those reasons

Lol mate they're complete wackjobs. Extremely right wing and actually more conservative than even the conservatives. Will jump into bed with the Tory's

Labour hold Darlington, Tories had hoped to take that from them so that's great news.

Massive hold for Labour in Darlington, Tories were hoping to take it to ensure a big majority

Red has traditionally been the color of leftist parties. It is only natural, therefore, that the maps with the results show red for a Labour victory, and blue for a conservative one.

The trouble is, I live in the US. We do things differently here, because... we can. I've become so used to cheering for blue, just now I pumped my fist at a constituency turning blue... until I realized it is the other way (and the correct way) around across the pond.

very slow night, by this time should've had many more results in

I hope they aren't rubbing out the pencil marks and changing them. :butt
Nostalgic Do you guys in the US have HB pencils or the more civlised Fountain pen to fill in your ballet at the polling station?

Nah, this is the same pace as always. The Mackems always race to get their results in but everyone takes their time, we'll start seeing most of the results start coming in after 3am and we'll probably have enough results to know if the Tories have managed a majority or not by around 5am.

*** man I'm an hour ahead :afaq;

looks like my conspiracy theory that Tories were deliberately looking to throw this election is coming true

No clue, I'm a Permanent Resident so I'm not eligible to vote. I've heard it varies from state to state: pen/pencil, punching the card (hence the infamous "dangling chads" of the 2000 Florida vote), touch screens et al.

lol all the Blairites changing their tune, still think they will stab Corbyn

Labour GAINS Battersea. Labour GAINS Shipley so goodbye to Philip Davies !

This is a miraculous night !

how ironic if Tories get a majority because of new Scottish Tory MPs

Not surprised about Shipley. These days there are so many homeles junkies sleeping rough outside Asda that Shipley Library has closed off access to the toilets and hired security.

BBC just showed Chipping Barnet plus Finchley and Golders Green (Thatcher's old seat) as potential Labour seats. Both areas with high Jewish populations that Corbyn supposedly alienated.

Bah gawd Scotland has turned heal!!

What's with all this blue north of the border?!? We need more yellow and reds!!!

I'm keen to tune in and watch the results come in. Would you guys recommend BBC or Sky News?

I'm watching BBC but either's fine.

BBC updates forecast for GE2017:

Con 322 -9
Lab 261 +29
SNP 32 -24
Lib Dem 13 +5
Plaid 3
Green 1
UKIP 0 -1
Other 18

I'm personally watching on BBC decent coverage there but Sky is good too, down to personal preference I guess.
TalhaSyed Scotland are going to mess this up now aren't they...

Finchley & Golders Green labour . Jewish voters don't seem to think Corbyn is antisemtic .

WHAT ARE YOU DOING SCOTLAND?

Not like this...

TalhaSyed Scotland are going to mess this up now aren't they...

It makes no sense!!

Looking at Angus as an example - the turn out in 2015 was 67% which has dropped slightly to 63% this time

In 2015 SNP won with 54% votes now Tories have won with 45% of the votes

In the Brexit referendum there was a 68% turnout from which 55% chose to stay in EU

In the Scottish Referendum 56% of people chose to remain in the UK with an 86% turn out

Only thing I can think of is that people are keener to stay in UK compared to staying in EU, however, in that scenario I don't know why you wouldn't vote for Labour

It is no secret that in this election, the SNP and Labour have a very similar stance on many key issues.

What this has resulted in is the vote being split.

In every constituency which has been won by Tories so far in Scotland, if the Labour and SNP voters had tactically voted together, rather than splitting the vote, the Tories would not have won a single seat in Scotland so far

Man NI is so screwed.

DUP as a party stand for absolutely nothing except bigotry, homophobia, sectarianism, terrorism (links with UDR and UVF always ignored) not to mention the RHI scandal and yet look, actual decent politicians in Naomi Long lose to these inbreds. Say what you will about SF but they have a young vibrant political base, very progressive on social issues and are generally socialist. What do the DUP have?? Flegs and bonfires and taig hating.

Long way to go yet in that province.

Sad day also for the SDLP, first Nationalist party in NI, marched peacefully and maintained that stance all while being beaten off the streets throughout the troubles. Now without a single MP for the first time ever.

Ditto for the UUP, slightly more moderate. NI becoming even more polarised

Makes me happy to see the Monster Raving Loonies are still kicking about

Lab gain Bedford and talk of taking Canterbury which is unprecedented!

Theresa May re-elected as an MP but stumbles through her acceptance speech and sounds very uncomfortable indeed.

The difference between the leaders , Corbyn strong confident, May shaking & teary.

She has to resign .

Strong rumours that we will get a resignation from Theresa by lunchtime.
