New Delhi: A day after Congress chief Sonia Gandhi said Indian democracy is at a "crossroads" and that the "pillars of a democratic system are under assault", Prime Minister Narendra Modi took a not-so-subtle swipe at the opposition party, hitting out at a "dynasty of corruption (that passed) from generation to generation... became part of political tradition... makes the country hollow".
Addressing the National Conference on Vigilance and Anti-Corruption via video-link, the Prime Minister said that entire "generations of corruption" had acted with impunity and gone unpunished but, under his government, "citizens' trust in the government has increased".

"In past decades, we've seen that when a generation of corruption is not punished, others commit corruption with more power. Due to this, in many states, it became part of political tradition. This dynasty of corruption from generation to generation makes the country hollow," PM Modi said.

"Today, citizens' trust in the government has increased. Old laws have been abolished to reduce undue pressure of the government. Efforts are being made to make citizens' life easier," he added.

On Friday, in a column for the Hindustan Times, Mrs Gandhi wrote: "The world's largest democracy is at the crossroads. That the economy is in deep crisis is clear. But what is less appreciated is that all the pillars of a democratic system of governance are under assault."

She hit out at the Narendra Modi government for stifling dissent (and branding it as "anti-national" and "terrorism") and using central investigative agencies like the CBI and Enforcement Directorate to "target political opposition".

Mrs Gandhi earlier also accused the ruling JDU-BJP in Bihar - where Assembly elections start Wednesday - of being "drunk on power and arrogance" and said a "serious crisis" had impacted the lives of farmers and Dalits and other marginalised members of society.

The interim Congress chief urged the people of the state - where her party has allied with Tejashwi Yadav's RJD and Left groups - to vote for a "new Bihar".

The BJP and the Congress routinely trade accusations of corruption, with the latter party quick to attack at any mention of the Rafale fighter jet deal and over charges that the government frames policies that benefit certain industrial and business groups.

PM Modi and other BJP leaders, meanwhile, often allege rampant corruption and political instability were the hallmarks of the Congress-led UPA governments.

Bihar votes for a new 243-member Assembly over three phases starting Wednesday, with results due on November 10. The first phase of voting will see 71 seats being contested.

I don’t think any Indian with 2 brain cells capable of rubbing against each other would deny the pervasive corruption of the Congress.

Sanghis and their fetish for whataboutery! Always living in the past!

Does the bigot even remember that he has absolute power for close to 6.5 years now and what has he made of India!

Absolute power? which government you are talking about?

Indian 'Liberal left' definitions:

Congress criticising BJP: Perfectly valid criticism and acceptable freedom of speech

BJP criticising Congress: Whataboutery and lies!

And you lot still want to be taken seriously :))

Isn’t it ironic!
They preach about Free Speech while attacking leaders of the nation. But when someone does the same to Congress family and suddenly that person is sanghis and what not! Fact is liberals can’t handle any criticism whatsoever.

India has a tough choice these days. Elect corrupt congress, or somewhat congress and very racist, Islamophobic, genocidal Modi's BJP.

Quite a tough choice these days. Are all the good Indian leaders in the west now?

So the bigot isn't a sanghi! Always knew you know zilch about India and its problems.

Don’t care about Modi or what he is. I do know he is criminal and bigot but then you labelling anyone who question Congress as sanghi is quite ludicrous.

Both parties are bad, Congress had 70 years to rule India but they were so corrupt that only cared about filling their pockets and stashing cash in Swiss bank!!

Maybe you’re not familiar with Indian history. Under congress India had witness far worse communal riots and blood shed. Who can forget famous 84 Sikh riots, and 92 Hindu Muslim riots where military were called in.

But agree that both are very bad for nation. Not having any good alternative is reason why Congress ruled India for 70 years and BJP is ruling now(and probably will for next 20 or so years unless something change drastically)

Bad times ahead

Sanghis are no less corrupt than Congress. They need to thank a pliant media for painting them as non corruptible.

Given a choice, who'd you choose?

Issue is, we suffered the same. It was either the corrupt bhutto/zardari or corrupt sharifs, for 30 years (we kind of are still suffering from them provincially). Definitely a third party should be there, and corruption should be their #1 enemy, not Pakistan.

I can't pick either. Corruption is wrong, and so is Islamophobia/racism. BJP has both, and congress may have less of the latter but corruption is still there.

Not sure how long can India continue with such leadership. Need a strong leader who would keep national interests before anything. Perhaps such leaders only exists in bollywood movies. #Nayak.

Anil Kapoor's character from Nayak is so identical to Imran Khan (minor the Host career shown earlier). I feel exactly same thing happening right now in Pakistan (i.e. opposition uniting to save their corruption against one leader gaining in popularity trying to hold them accountable for their corruption). That movie was so accurate.

India has survived, even thrived in places, despite 50 years of Congress misrule with assorted 'Janata' circuses and 'third front' catastrophes thrown in, it can't fare worse under the BJP.

It only goes to show that the country and the people are strong, and there's more to India than some dimwitted morons in Delhi.
