Brazil legend Pele is improving but remains in intensive care having been admitted to hospital with a urinary infection earlier this week.

It follows a tweet from his account on Thursday that said the three-time World Cup winner was "doing fine" in Sao Paulo's Albert Einstein Hospital.

The 74-year-old's personal assistant Jose Fornos also played down the news.

But the hospital said Pele "continues under temporary kidney support, lucid and with no need of breathing support".

The statement added: "[Pele is] improving his clinical condition and remains in the intensive care unit."

Initially on Thursday, the hospital said that Pele had been admitted with "clinical instability".

But later that day, Pele tweeted: "I was simply relocated to a special room within the hospital for privacy purposes only.

"While I appreciate all the visitors that came to see me, I really need to continue my treatment and recovery in peace.

"I am looking forward to spending the upcoming holidays with my family and will start the new year with renewed health, with many international trips already planned! Thank you!"

A World Cup winner in 1958, 1962 and 1970, Pele was initially discharged from hospital on 13 November after surgery to remove kidney stones.

Local media said it was possible he picked up an infection during the procedure and that the current treatment was usually straightforward.

Widely regarded as the greatest player of all time, Pele scored a world record total of 1,281 goals in 1,363 games during his 21-year career.

He was also named Fifa's Player of the Century and won 91 caps for Brazil, scoring 77 goals.

He made 14 appearances at World Cup finals, scoring 12 goals, and was awarded the Fifa Golden Ball as the best player at the 1970 tournament.

Best wishes to the legend that is Pele.

Hope he makes a full and speedy recovery.

Pele off dialysis, remains in intensive care

Brazil legend Pele is making good progress and does not require dialysis but remains in intensive care as he battles kidney problems, the Sao Paulo hospital treating him said on Monday.

"The patient Edson Arantes do Nascimento (Pele) has made good progress though he remains in intensive care," read a statement from the Albert Einstein Hospital, which described the 74-year-old as "lucid and stable with regard to blood flow and breathing".

The clinic added that it did not consider it necessary to resume renal assistance, suspended Sunday.

"Taking clinical and laboratory parameters into consideration it will not be necessary today to undertake renal assistance. Antibiotic therapy remains the same," the hospital said.

Three-time world champion Pele, widely regarded as the greatest player of all time, was hospitalised last Monday where early tests showed a urinary infection requiring administration of intravenous antibiotics.

On Thursday, the hospital said the man nicknamed 'O Rei' (the king) had been placed in intensive care after his condition became "clinically unstable," causing widespread alarm and local media to suggest his condition was "delicate," claiming Pele was suffering from septicaemia.

But Friday the clinic said he was responding to anti-biotics while the star insisted via social media he had simply been moved to another room for more privacy.

Pele has only one kidney after the other was removed following complications from a rib injury he suffered while playing for the New York Cosmos in the 1970s, his agent, Jose "Pepito" Fornos, told AFP.

The star was taken off intensive kidney treatment Sunday as his condition improved following hemodialysis, a procedure which filters a patient's blood through an artificial kidney that cleans it before returning it to the body.

Pele underwent surgery for kidney stones at the same hospital on November 13.

Named athlete of the 20th century by the International Olympic Committee in 1999, Pele was born on October 3, 1940 to a humble family at Tres Coracoes in the southeastern state of Minas Gerais, making his name with Santos and helping Brazil to World Cup titles in 1958, 1962 and 1970.

He achieved the first of those triumphs aged just 17, scoring twice in the final win over hosts Sweden.

Pele scored 77 goals in 91 games for Brazil and scored 1 281 goals in his career.

Legendary Brazil forward Pele is reluctant to leave his house because he cannot walk unaided, his son has said.

The three-time World Cup winner, widely regarded as the greatest player of all time, was taken to hospital with a urinary infection last year.

Pele, 79, has had problems with his hip for some time and now needs a frame to walk, with many of his recent public appearances in a wheelchair.

"He is very sheepish, reclusive," his son Edinho told TV Globo.

Pele scored a world record total of 1,281 goals in 1,363 appearances during his 21-year career, including 77 goals in 91 appearances for Brazil.

His health has been a concern in recent years and he had prostate surgery in 2015 after he was admitted to hospital for the second time in six months.

"Imagine, he's the King, he was always such an imposing figure and today he can't walk properly," Edinho explained.

"He's embarrassed, he doesn't want to go out, be seen, or do practically anything that involves leaving the house.

"He's pretty fragile. He had a hip replacement and didn't have an adequate or ideal rehabilitation. So he has this problem with mobility and that has set off a kind of depression."

This June marks the 50th anniversary of Pele's final World Cup title, won in Mexico with what many believe to be the greatest team of all time.

Legendary Brazil forward Pele has spoken for the first time since his son claimed he was reluctant to leave his house, saying his health issues were "normal for people of my age".

Pele's son Edinho said the three-time World Cup winner, 79, was "embarrassed" at needing a frame to walk because of his hip problems.

But Pele, widely regarded as the greatest ever player, said: "I am good. I continue to accept my physical limitations in the best way possible but I intend to keep the ball rolling."

Pele scored a world record 1,281 goals in 1,363 appearances during a 21-year career, including 77 goals in 91 appearances for Brazil.

He had prostate surgery in 2015 and was taken to hospital with a urinary infection last year.

But friends of the former Santos and New York Cosmos player have said that this January was one of his busiest in years.

As well as doing photo shoots and sponsorship work, Pele is cooperating with a British director making a documentary about his footballing life.

"I am not avoiding fulfilling the commitments in my always busy schedule," he added in a statement.

"I have good days and bad days. That is normal for people of my age. I am not afraid, I am determined, confident in what I do."

SAO PAULO, Sept 6 (Reuters) - Brazil soccer great Pele said on Monday that he was recovering in hospital from surgery to remove a tumour from his colon.

Pele, the only player to win three World Cups, did not say whether the tumour was malignant but the 80-year-old former Santos and New York Cosmos player said he was feeling good.

"Last Saturday I underwent surgery to remove a suspicious lesion in the right colon," he wrote in a social media post. "The tumour was identified during the tests I mentioned last week."

The Albert Einstein hospital in Sao Paulo said in a statement that they were keeping Pele in intensive care but expected to transfer him to a room on Tuesday.

The tumour has been sent for tests, it added.

"Luckily, I am used to celebrating big victories with you," Pele wrote. "I am facing up to this match with a smile on my face, a lot of optimism and happiness for being surrounded by the love of my family and friends."

The news came just hours after a Brazilian news outlet said Pele had spent six days in hospital after going in for his annual medical.

It also came days after Pele refuted reports he had fainted and 18 months after his son Edinho said his father was depressed, something the star quickly denied.

Pele was famous as a player for rarely getting injured but he has suffered from hip problems for years and cannot walk unaided.

His public appearances were already being cut before the COVID-19 pandemic and since then he has made few unnecessary forays outside his house near Santos.

His health has been a concern in the last few years. He was by far the greatest player of all time, before Maradona, Ronaldo and Messi took over.

I hope he gets well soon, the football world can't afford to lose Maradona and Pelé in the space of one year.

Brazilian football legend Pele remains in intensive care but is making a satisfactory recovery after having surgery for a suspected colon tumour.

The 80-year-old is being treated at the Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo.

His medical team said that he was "conscious, conversing actively and is maintaining normal vital signs".

"With each passing day I feel a little better," the three-time World Cup winner, who has had a number of recent health issues, said via Instagram.

He added that "I'm still going to recover for a few more days".

"While I'm here, I take the opportunity to talk a lot with my family and to rest," he said. "Thanks again for all the loving messages. We'll be together again soon!"

The suspected tumour had been detected during routine tests at the hospital where he has been having treatment since 31 August.

In February 2020, Pele's son, ex-Santos goalkeeper Edinho, said his father had become "embarrassed" to leave his house because he cannot walk unaided.

His health has been a concern in recent years; he had prostate surgery in 2015 after he was admitted to hospital for the second time in six months, and he was admitted for a urinary infection in 2019.

Pele is Brazil's all-time leading goalscorer and one of only four players to have scored in four different World Cup tournaments.

Earlier this week, Lionel Messi passed him as the leading South American men's goalscorer in international matches with a hat-trick in Argentina's World Cup qualifying win against Bolivia.

Pele: Brazilian football legend to be moved out of intensive care

Brazilian legend Pele is to be moved out of intensive care in the next day or two after having surgery to remove a tumour from his colon.

The 80-year-old is being treated at the Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo.

Pele's daughter Kely Nascimento said her father was "doing well" and "is not in pain" in a post on Instagram.

The three-time World Cup winner has been having treatment at the hospital since 31 August after the tumour was detected in routine tests.

"He is strong and stubborn and with the support and care of the brilliant team at Einstein and all of the love, energy and light that the world is sending, he will get through this," Nascimento added.

Brazil legend Pele says he is 'recovering very well' after surgery

The 80-year-old had surgery to remove a tumour from his colon this month and was initially released from intensive care on Wednesday.

Sao Paulo's Albert Einstein Hospital said he was readmitted "as a preventative measure".

"My friends, I am still recovering very well," Pele wrote on Instagram.

"Today I received visits from family members and I continue to smile every day. Thank you for all the love I get from you."

Report
Pele had been having treatment at the hospital since 31 August after the tumour was detected in routine tests.

Media outlets in Brazil reported that he was readmitted to intensive care as a precautionary measure because of his age.

The hospital later released a statement confirming this and added: "After stabilisation, the patient was transferred to semi-intensive care.

"He is currently stable from a cardiovascular and respiratory point of view."

Before the hospital statement was released, his daughter posted on Instagram: "I don't know what is going on with the rumours out there but my DMs are booming!!!

"There's already a lot of anxiety roaming the world these days and we don't want to be the reason for more.

"The normal recovery scenario for a man of his age after an operation like this, is sometimes two steps forward and one step back. It's very normal.

"Yesterday he was tired and took a little step back. Today he took two forwards!"

Pele's health has been a concern in recent years. He had prostate surgery in 2015 after he was admitted to hospital for the second time in six months, and he was admitted again for a urinary infection in 2019.

Pele is Brazil's all-time leading scorer with 77 goals in 92 games and one of only four players to have scored in four World Cup tournaments.

Brazil legend Pele has been released from hospital after undergoing surgery for a colon tumour.

The 80-year-old had the operation at Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo on 4 September.

Pele, the only player to win the World Cup three times, left the intensive care unit 10 days later, but was readmitted soon after as a "preventative measure".

"I am so happy to be back at home," Pele said in a statement on Facebook.

"I want to thank the entire Albert Einstein Hospital team, who made my stay a pleasant one, with a humane and very affectionate welcome. Thanks also to all of you, who from afar, make my life complete with so many messages of love."

His medical team say he will continue undergoing chemotherapy.

Pele had been having treatment at the hospital since 31 August after the tumour was detected in routine tests.

Brazil legend Pele is in hospital for treatment for a colon tumour.

The three-time World Cup winner had surgery to remove a colon tumour in September, with the hospital saying at the time that he would also need to have chemotherapy.

Sao Paulo's Hospital Albert Einstein said the 81-year-old was in a stable condition and would be discharged in the next few days.

The hospital also said Pele was now "continuing" his treatment.

Pele said on Twitter last month that he was "fine" and "feeling better every day" following his release from hospital in September.

He had been having treatment at the hospital since 31 August after the tumour was detected in routine tests.

The 81-year-old ex-player known as "O Rei" (The King) "is stable and will continue the treatment of the colon tumor that was identified in September of this year," the Albert Einstein Hospital said in a statement.

Pele underwent surgery for the tumor on September 4, spending a month in the hospital before being discharged to continue chemotherapy.

It is the latest in a string of health troubles for the aging star, whose public appearances have grown increasingly rare.

Considered by many the greatest footballer of all time, Edson Arantes do Nascimento -- Pele's real name -- is the only player in history to win three World Cups (1958, 1962 and 1970).

He burst onto the global stage at just 17 by scoring dazzling goals, including two in the final against hosts Sweden, as Brazil won the World Cup for the first time in 1958.

He went on to have one of the most storied careers in sport, scoring more than 1,000 goals before retiring in 1977.

Pele announced on Instagram on December 9 that he would stay in hospital for just "a few days" for chemotherapy.

He ended up staying for two weeks.

"Don't worry, I'm just getting ready for the holiday season!" he said in a message to fans.

Pele: Brazil great discharged from Sao Paulo hospital

Brazil legend Pele has been discharged from hospital after receiving treatment for a tumour and a urinary tract infection.

The three-time World Cup winner, 81, was admitted to Sao Paulo's Hospital Albert Einstein on 13 February for treatment on the colon tumour.

Eight days after he was admitted, doctors detected a urinary tract infection, which extended his stay.

However, the hospital said Pele was now in a "stable clinical condition".

He will continue treatment for the tumour which was first detected in routine tests in September.

Pele had prostate surgery in 2015 after he was admitted to hospital for the second time in six months, and he was back in again for a urinary infection in 2019.

He was readmitted in December for treatment on the tumour but was discharged just before Christmas.

Brazil's all-time leading scorer with 77 goals in 92 games, the former striker is one of only four players to have scored in four World Cup tournaments.

Football Legend Pele Hospitalised Again, Daughter Says "No Emergency"

Brazilian football legend Pele has been hospitalised again, but there is "no emergency," his daughter said Wednesday, the latest health issue for the 82-year-old icon, who has been in treatment following a colon tumor. "He is in the hospital regulating medication," Pele's daughter Kely Nascimento wrote on Instagram. "There is (no) emergency or new dire prediction... We appreciate the concern and love."

Pele has been undergoing regular chemotherapy treatments since being diagnosed with colon cancer last year. He had surgery to remove the tumor in September 2021, spending a month in the hospital.

Considered by many the greatest footballer of all time, Edson Arantes do Nascimento -- Pele's real name -- has suffered from increasingly fragile health in recent years.

The only player in history to win three World Cups (1958, 1962 and 1970), Pele had one of the most storied careers in sport, scoring more than 1,000 goals before retiring in 1977.

His public appearances have grown increasingly rare, but he maintains an active presence on social media -- recently telling the Brazilian national team he was counting on them to "bring this trophy home" from the 2022 World Cup.

Pele has thanked well-wishers for sending "good vibes" after confirming his hospital stay was a routine visit.

Concerns were raised on Wednesday when ESPN Brasil reported Pele had been admitted to Sao Paulo's Hospital Albert Einstein with "general swelling".

The Brazil legend had a tumour removed from his colon in September 2021 and has since had regular treatment.

"Friends, I am at the hospital making my monthly visit," the 82-year-old wrote on Instagram.

The three-time World Cup winner included an image of a tribute to him at the Qatar World Cup alongside the post.

And he added: "It's always nice to receive positive messages like this. Thanks to Qatar for this tribute, and to everyone who sends me good vibes!"

ESPN Brasil also reported Pele was having cardiac issues and there were concerns that his chemotherapy treatment is not having the expected effect.

His daughter, Kely Nascimento, was moved to clarify on Instagram, saying: "There is no emergency or new dire prediction. He is in the hospital regulating medication."

Pele is Brazil's all-time leading scorer with 77 goals in 92 games, and the former striker is one of only four players to have scored in four World Cup tournaments.

Pele in hospital: Messages of support from across football for Brazil great

Messages of support for Brazil great Pele have been sent from across the world while the three-time World Cup winner is being treated in hospital.

The 82-year-old was admitted to hospital in Sao Paulo on Tuesday, saying it was a routine monthly visit.

However a report in Brazil states that Pele is now beginning end-of-life care after not responding to chemotherapy.

"Pray for the King," France forward Kylian Mbappe tweeted.

Former Argentina defender Pablo Zabaleta added on BBC One: "It's very sad news to hear about Pele. He's been a true inspiration for all of us, on and off the pitch. He's always been a great man."

World Cup host nation Qatar showed its support for Pele on Saturday, lighting up buildings with a "Get well soon" message.

The Lusail Stadium in Doha, which will host the World Cup final on 18 December, and the Aspire Tower next to the Khalifa Stadium, were adorned with pictures of Pele in his famous number 10 shirt.

Concerns were initially raised on Wednesday when ESPN Brasil reported Pele had been admitted, with his daughter Kely Nascimento saying there was "no emergency" involved.

Pele thanked well-wishers on Friday for sending "good vibes" and said his stay in hospital was "a routine visit".

The former striker is Brazil's all-time leading scorer with 77 goals in 92 games and scored in four World Cup tournaments.

Brazil great Pele says he is "strong with a lot of hope" as he undergoes treatment in hospital in Sao Paulo.

In a statement released on Saturday he said messages of support as well as watching Brazil at the World Cup had given him "energy".

Earlier the hospital had said he was "still undergoing treatment and remains stable".

It follows a report in Brazil that he was beginning end-of-life care after not responding to chemotherapy.

"My friends, I want to keep everyone calm and positive," he said in a statement on Instagram.

"I'm strong, with a lot of hope and I follow my treatment as usual. I want to thank the entire medical and nursing team for all the care I have received.

"I have a lot of faith in God and every message of love I receive from you all over the world keeps me full of energy. And watching Brazil in the World Cup too!

"Thank you so much for everything."

The 82-year-old three-time World Cup winner has been in hospital since Tuesday, and on Thursday night he said it was a "routine monthly visit".

He had a tumour removed from his colon in September 2021.

The statement from the Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein on Saturday said Pele "had a good response to treatment for respiratory infection care". It added he was undergoing a "reassessment of chemotherapy treatment".

The legendary forward was diagnosed with a respiratory infection and on Friday the hospital had said he was in a stable condition.

On Saturday, the new statement said his condition has not worsened in the last 24 hours.

Meanwhile, messages of support have been sent from across the world.

Brazil's assistant coach Cesar Sampaio has asked that everyone "send a prayer" to Pele, who is currently in hospital.

Three-time World Cup winner Pele, 82, has been in hospital since Tuesday and on Saturday reassured fans that he is "strong with a lot of hope".

The Brazil great's statement came after a Sao Paulo newspaper reported that he is receiving end-of-life care.

Speaking at the World Cup in Qatar, Sampaio said: "Regardless of your religion we ask you to send a prayer."

Sampaio, who played at Pele's club Santos added: "He is a man who has influenced me not only as an athlete but as a human being.

"Even being able to talk to him was so difficult because of what he represents."

Pele has received regular treatment since having a tumour removed from his colon in September 2021 and on Thursday said he was at the Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein for a "routine monthly visit".

The hospital said on Saturday he had responded well to treatment for a respiratory infection and was "still undergoing treatment and remains stable".

It added Pele was undergoing a "reassessment of chemotherapy treatment".

Messages of support have been sent from across the footballing world and Brazil coach Tite shared his admiration for the former player on Sunday.

"I was shaking when I greeted him," Tite said.

"My hands were sweating, my heartbeat increased and I thought 'wow I'm going to have the opportunity to greet Pele'.

"It's something all of us feel. It's a difficult moment."

Former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger, who is Fifa's head of global development, described Pele as his childhood "idol", adding: "We wish him to recover quickly."

Pele has thanks Kylian Mbappe for his support after the France international urged his followers to pray for the stricken football icon.

Pele, 82, is battling cancer and was admitted to a hospital in Sao Paulo, Brazil in November amid reports he is beginning end-of-life care after not responding to chemotherapy. The three-time World Cup winner has urged fans to stay "calm and positive".

Doctors at Pele's hospital have confirmed the ex-footballer's condition is improving and he is stable. The former Brazil international has received well wishes from millions of football fans in recent days, with Mbappe tweeting "Pray for the King" last Saturday.

In a positive sign, Pele responded to Mbappe's tweet on Thursday evening. He wrote: "Thank you, Kylian. I'm happy to see you breaking another one of my records in this [World] Cup, my friend!"

Pele was quick to reassure fans of his condition when worrying reports emerged earlier this month. He wrote on Instagram : "My friends, I want to keep everyone calm and positive. I'm strong, with a lot of hope and I follow my treatment as usual.

"I want to thank the entire medical and nursing team for all the care I have received. I have a lot of faith in God and every message of love I receive from you all over the world keeps me full of energy. And watching Brazil in the World Cup too! Thank you so much for everything."

Doctors then reassured fans further by releasing a statement on Tuesday. It read: "The patient continues to show progressive improvement in his general condition, in particular the respiratory infection. He remains in a standard room, with stable vital signs, conscious and with no new complications."

Pele is regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time after winning 1958, 1962 and 1970 World Cups with Brazil. He is the only men's player in history to be a three-time world champion and remains his country's leading scorer with 77 goals in 92 caps.

Pele scored more than 1,000 goals and won plenty of trophies for Brazilian side Santos, where he spent the majority of his career. He won six Brazilian league titles and the Copa Libertadores twice before finishing his playing days with American side New York Cosmos.

Since hanging up his boots in 1977, Pele has become a global ambassador for football. His health has deteriorated in recent months, as he underwent surgery to remove a tumour in his colon in September 2021 before starting chemotherapy.

Mbappe, 23, has drawn comparisons with Pele. He became the first teenager since Pele to score in a World Cup final when France defeated Croatia 4-2 in Russia four years ago. Pele famously achieved the feat in Brazil's 5-2 win against Sweden in 1958.

Mbappe broke Pele's record for the most World Cup goals scored by a player aged under 24 when he scored a brace in the 3-0 win against Poland, taking his tally to nine. England will be hoping he doesn't add to it when they meet France in Saturday's quarter-final.

Pele: Brazil great's cancer has advanced, says hospital

Brazil great Pele's cancer has advanced, according to the hospital where the 82-year-old is being treated.

The three-time World Cup winner has been in hospital for just over three weeks.

His daughter said on social media that he would spend Christmas in hospital.

The Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein said Pele "presents cancer disease progression and requires greater care related to renal and cardiac dysfunctions".

Pele had a tumour removed from his colon in September 2021 and has since had regular treatment.

"Our Christmas at home has been suspended," wrote Pele's daughter, Kely Nascimento, on Instagram.

"We decided with the doctors that, for various reasons, it would be better for us to stay here with all the care that this new family at Einstein gives us."

Just after he was admitted, the hospital in Sao Paulo had said Pele "had a good response to treatment for respiratory infection care" and added he was undergoing a "reassessment of chemotherapy treatment".

Pele is his country's all-time leading scorer with 77 goals in 92 games and helped his country win the World Cup in 1958, 1962 and 1970.

Brazil players paid tribute to Pele after their last-16 win over South Korea during the 2022 World Cup as they held up a banner with his name and picture.

Best wishes for the legend! Unfortunately, we all know how it’ll end.
