Steve Smith scores 61 at Global T20 Canada
KING CITY, Ont. — Former Australian skipper Steve Smith took the first step away from the ball-tampering scandal that derailed his career with an innings of 61 Thursday in the opening game of the Global T20 Canada cricket tournament.
Smith helped the Toronto Nationals to a six-wicket win over the Vancouver Knights.
It was a welcome return to the cricket pitch for the 29-year-old star batsman after a three-month absence that saw him pilloried for cheating.
"Honestly, when I'm out in the middle, everything else is a blur," he told reporters after the game. "I just concentrate on what I'm doing. It's almost like my haven, I guess, if you want to call it that. I just love being out in the middle and playing the game.
"The Toronto Nationals team has been great. Everyone's been really accepting."
Smith was watching from the sidelines in the final moments with Toronto needing 25 runs to win from the final two overs and four from the last over. New Zealand's Anton Devcich, who finished out the innings with Toronto captain Darren Sammy, led the Nationals with 92.
Sammy, who had 22, won the game with a six with four balls remaining, pushing the Toronto score to 231 for four. Three sixes in the penultimate over helped the Toronto cause.
Smith was stumped by Chadwick Walton after missing a Fawad Ahmed delivery. Smith, who was almost caught on 27, hit one six and eight fours in compiling his 12th T20 half-century.
Much of the pre-tournament attention has been on Smith, whose career took a nosedive in March for cheating in a test match in South Africa. David Warner, the former Aussie vice-captain also embroiled in the scandal, is at the Canadian event as a member of the Winnipeg Hawks.
Both men have been banned for a year by Cricket Australia, although they are allowed to play abroad. That ruling did not help them in the high-profile Indian Premier League, which cancelled their lucrative contracts.
A Cricket Australia investigator found that Warner instructed Cameron Bancroft how to carry out the tampering with a piece of sandpaper during a break in play on the third day of the third cricket test against South Africa. Bancroft was banned for nine months.
Smith, who as captain took responsibility for the cheating, was seen to have let both cricket and Australia down in a dramatic fall from grace.
"Look I'm not going to lie. It's been a difficult time in my life, there's no doubt about that," he said. "But I've accepted my punishment, I've accepted what I've gone through. And I'm moving forward. Part of my sort of rehab is playing cricket as well. That's what I love doing."
Thursday's game was played in the tight — at-least cricket-wise — confines of the Maple Leaf Cricket Club just north of Toronto. The bleachers were largely empty when the first ball was bowled at 4 p.m. local time but the crowd grew somewhat. Organizers did not announce the attendance.
Ball flew out of the ground, clearing trees and VIP tents under the late-afternoon sunshine after Sammy, the Toronto captain, won the toss and elected to put Vancouver into bat.
West Indies opener Evin Lewis kept the Vancouver scoreboard ticking as the Knights compiled 227 runs for four wickets in their 20 overs.
Lewis exited after an entertaining 96, four short of his fourth T20 century, when he skied a shot to Devcich in the 19th over. He hit 10 sixes and five fours off 55 balls.
Andre Russell joined him, battering United Arab Emirates bowler Mohammad Naveed for four sixes and a four in the 17th over. The West Indies batsman finished at 54 not out.
Smith was involved in the first out of the match, making the catch to dispatch West Indies star Chris Gayle after a 17-run, 12-ball innings that included two fours and one six.
Toronto lost opener Nazakat Khan (six) in the first over, bringing in Smith. The Aussie showed off an elegant stroke more often than not although there were also some rusty moments in his 41-ball innings.
The tournament is a partnership between Cricket Canada and the Mercuri Group, an India-based media and talent management company that is the driving force behind the event.
For Cricket Canada, it's a chance to give national team players some high-level competition while earning revenue from its 25-year leasing agreement with Mercuri, which has also undertaken to help develop Canadian talent.
For Mercuri, it's chance to create a potentially valuable window in the crowded cricket calendar with broadcast partners around the globe.
Organizers recruited some marquee names to captain the squads in West Indies' Sammy (Toronto), Gayle (Vancouver) and Dwayne Bravo (Winnipeg), Sri Lanka's Lasith Malinga (Montreal) and Pakistan's Shahid Afridi (Edmonton). A Cricket West Indies B side fills out the six-team field.
The Toronto lineup included Canadian captain Nitish Kumar and Nikhil Dutta. Vancouver's roster includes Canadians Saad Bin Zafar and Jeremy Gordon.
Music played during breaks in the action, ranging from the Bee Gees' "Staying Alive" to Los del Río's "Macarena." Workers spent most of the Vancouver innings trying to hang an advertising banner for a local bank, with limited success.
The uniforms were also spotty. Devcich, a late addition to the Toronto side, had no name or number on his jersey. Perhaps his number was used by Gayle, who wore No. 333. It also took a while for the electronic scoreboard to work.

Standard of umpiring didn't seem to be great either. I remember a no ball was called, and replays showed that his foot was behind the line quite comfortably :/ that can't even be overturned as once a no ball is called, a batsman thinks he can't be out so there is no going back.
There is basically farmland in that area so yes, it's a rural area.
My first impressions are that the organizers have done quite well, I just hope GTA supports this event and comes out in numbers.

David Warner has hit out at critics who suggest he should have been banned from all forms of cricket while pouring cold water on rumours of a rift with former Test captain Steve Smith.
In Canada on Friday, Warner fronted a pack of reporters for the first time since his press conference at Sydney airport, after the ball-tampering saga in South Africa in March.
Warner addresses media with short statement
Warner accepted a 12-month ban from Australian domestic and international cricket, was stripped of the vice-captaincy and will not be considered again for a leadership position for his role in the controversy.
Making his return to cricket at the inaugural Global T20 Canada league in Toronto, Warner was dismissed for just one but his Winnipeg Hawks secured a 46-run win over Montreal at Maple Leaf Cricket Club.
The 31-year-old batsman then opened up on the three months since the events of Cape Town.
"Definitely, it has been tough. Not just for me but for my family and also the fans who support Australian cricket," Warner said.
"I'm responsible; that's my fault.
"I've had some tough times but I'm an adult; I'll move forward and make sure I do the right things at the right time."
Warner was portrayed as the ring leader in the ball-tampering scandal, which reached fever pitch when he removed himself from the Test team's WhatsApp group.
But Warner rubbished suggestions he should not have been allowed to return to cricket at the fledgling league in Toronto, where he is a marquee signing.
It is believed the biggest names at the 18-day tournament are being paid up to $100,000.
"Everyone is entitled to their opinion ... if I look back at everything that has happened and the sanctions that have been handed down by the ICC, it is what it is," Warner said.
"Critics will be critics and that's why they're behind the keyboard, so we'll move forward and try to ignore that."
Warner said he had "good and numerous chats" with former Test skipper Smith, who was also banned for 12 months, and denied their relationship was frosty.
"That's just what happens, you're always going to get that impression (of a rift)," Warner said.
"But we're good mates, if you're at the (player) hotel you will see us hanging out with each other.
"We haven't been able to (have a lengthy) catch up because he's been away and Cameron (Bancroft) has been in Perth and I've been doing my thing with my family at home."
Smith strikes half-century in T20 return
In his emotional press conference in Sydney in March, Warner conceded he may not be given another opportunity to play for Australia.
He remains unsure of his next step after Canada.
"I've got time to think over the next nine months what my future holds," Warner said.
"These 12 months are going to be a good (chance) to reflect on myself as a person, as a dad and a family man.
"I'm extremely grateful for cricket and what it has brought me; the game owes me nothing."

I see these matches are referred as 'Other T20' matches, not official domestic T2O matches. Any idea why these matches don't have official domestic T20 status ?
So, 4 Canadian players in the 16 man squad. The first XI is filled with 7/8 overseas players. It's more like a global T20 carnival. GLT20 should work keep towards executing 7 Canadian players and 4 overseas players in the XI model.
How did the tournament manage to sign so many international players ? I'm assuming GLT20 has substantial investment in it. The organizers must have identified an untapped market away from the conventional international venues.
Another thing, when 'workload management' is an issue for all format players, for example, for a player like Tim Southee (who plays all formats for NZ), is it suitable for him to play in this GLT20 ? Is it too attractive a contract to be overlooked although as I said earlier these matches don't have official domestic T2O status ?

DUBLIN – Less than 24-hours after featuring in the second T20 International against India at Malahide Kevin O’Brien has flown out to join his new teammates at the Edmonton Royals, one of six teams competing in the 2018 Global T20 Canada competition.
The competition, in its inaugural year, will run from 28 June to 15 July and has attracted a number of high-profile cricketers from around the world, including Shahid Afridi, Dwayne Bravo, Chris Gayle, Chris Lynn, Lasith Malinga, David Miller, Sunil Narine, Andre Russell, Darren Sammy, David Warner and Steve Smith.
O’Brien’s team is captained by former Pakistani international Sohail Tanvir and includes Pakistani cricket legend Afridi, big-hitting New Zealander Luke Ronchi and West Indian white-ball specialist Andre Fletcher.
Speaking upon his arrival in Edmonton, O’Brien said:
“I’m stoked to be offered this opportunity in the Canadian T20 competition. We’ve just come off a challenging few weeks of T20 cricket with Ireland, and I really want to get out there and show the fans in a new part of the world how enjoyable it is to play and watch this form of the game.”
“The call came late and Niall [O’Briens brother and agent] confirmed the playing deal the morning I flew out. With the Indian T20 Internationals and now being in Canada, it has been a whirlwind few days. But I’m looking forward to the next two weeks, getting to know my new teammates and getting stuck in against some of the world’s best white-ball cricketers.”
“This move has come at a great time in my career, and has worked perfectly with my national team commitments. The release of the recent ICC Future Tours Programme has shown that Ireland will play over 120 games of white-ball cricket over the next four years, and the World T20 Qualifiers are only a year away – so to expand my experiences in T20 cricket in different conditions will only but improve what I can hopefully offer Ireland over coming years.”
O’Brien has had a year of cricketing highs and lows, and he reflected on the first half of 2018:
“Obviously missing out of World Cup qualification hurt, but the emotion and experience of our first Test match in May will undoubtedly live with me for life. It has been a roller coaster of a year to date, and now here I am in Canada of all places about to play in a T20 match. It’s a pinch-me moment.”

Timing is a bit wrong - they started the tournament just when WC reached it's business end.

I live in Toronto - who in the right mind will drive 1.5-2 hour in the rush hour from Downtown. The timings are weird. Weekday matches start at 4. It should have been after 7. Plus - the ground is too far even during normal traffic. Which puts off a lot of people including me. They need to build a world class stadium in Mississauga/Toronto. It will take some years to take off I guess.

In the 90's I used to travel 2-3 hours to see the Sahara Cup in Toronto - and when I used to get there, I would find a ground full of people like me. That my friend is passion.

Franchise cricket is not that appealing to masses.
Pak/SL/Zim played in 2008 in the same ground - it was a packed house in almost every match. I went to two matches including the final which Pak lost to SL. If an international match was to take place - lets say Pak vs any other major country - you will see a sell out.

I’m a cricket fanatic - it doesn’t matter how much Afridis or Smiths you put in the same ground - it will not appeal to me unless its an international game.

Banned Australian duo David Warner and Steve Smith were dismissed cheaply in their highly anticipated match-up at the Global T20 Canada. In what was billed as one of the clash of the tournament, Warner's Winnipeg Hawks secured a 56-run win over Smith's Toronto Nationals on Monday at the Maple Leaf Cricket Club, north of Toronto.
With both Smith and Warner serving a 12-month ban by Cricket Australia from international and Australian domestic cricket for ball tampering, former Test skipper Smith and his ex-deputy are headline acts at the fledgling league in Toronto. But with Winnipeg batting first, opener Warner faced just two balls for one run before he was run out by Toronto's Anton Devcich, from New Zealand.
Warner also contributed just one run for Winnipeg in his opening match on Friday, while on Sunday and he faced just six balls for four runs as Winnipeg lost to Vancouver Knights by six wickets. The Hawks took advantage of a rare bowling stint from Smith during their 164-run innings, with Dwayne Bravo belting Smith for four sixes in one over. Hawks captain Bravo was stoic on a dodgy pitch with 41 runs, but teammate Lendl Simmons led the way with 44.

At the ground I think.
I went other day, it was well organized for Canadian cricket (which is a low bar so if you are from England, you will think its terribly organized, ha). I thought the quality of cricket was good. These were international stars, who we don't get to see often. Edwards troubled Smith with short balls and at the ribs. It was like watching the match in Australia.
It was a enjoyable day of cricket, may go again.

Don't want to say this but Sponsors or Investors gotta coup their investment somehow though...
Smith, Sammy, Devcic, Pollard are the best T20 batsmen in the world but could not get the ball off the square. Now the WI B openers are hitting a boundary every ball. The same thing happened in the last game involving WI B. Got to raise some eyebrows.

You can see that Agha Salman is a big fan of Saqlain Mushtaq as he has copied his bowling action.

When the opportunity was presented to have a team in the inaugural Global T20 Canada, Cricket West Indies (CWI) grabbed with both hands. At the time the team was being assembled, WINDIES A would have already been in the UK (June 14) for their tri-nation tour and the WINDIES were committed to host Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.
That therefore required up to 40 active male players in three formats of the game. At some point during the June 28 to July 15 period, WINDIES drew a Test Series with Sri Lanka, WINDIES A were being competitive against India and The Lions; but the WINDIES B were winning matches, a thing no one expected them to do.
It would have been one of the first time in the organization’s recent history that three male teams were competing against formidable opponents at home and away.
In Round One, the team romped to four straight wins and made it to the play-offs, losing one of five matches. And in three matches in the play-offs, including the final, won only one. Leaving the tournament with a 5 wins 3 losses record was “commendable” according to Coach, Roddy Estwick.
“The tournament was a great experience for all involved.” Estwick emphasized. He credited the players for adjusting quickly to the conditions and thought that “the exciting brand of cricket which was exhibited has left a mark on the cricket fans in Canada and those who watched the tournament.” He added that “faith is being restored in West Indies Cricket.”
Estwick heaped praise on the squad and said “they adapted to the conditions well and played fearless cricket always believing in themselves. They adopted the ‘making the impossible, possible’ as their team motto.”
Estwick shared the sentiments of the team that said the tournament was well organized and the Caribbean Community and other patrons were “treated to almost three weeks of exciting T20 cricket.”
CWI President, Dave Cameron says his administration has delivered on some of its earlier promises which includes, but is not limited to:
Expanding the pool of players for competition through strategic development and high-performance programs
Growing the cricket industry

The PCB is in talks with the International Cricket Council (ICC) about the league’s affiliation, and a decision on the NOC will be made after receiving clarification from the ICC.

4 players were sent home from our Canadian league. I think organizers are having issue with sponsors. Should be resolved soon. My uncle had a zoom meeting. The tournament will continue.

So asif, amir, iffi and nawaz will be the only guys from Pakistan to play here. Let's see how IFFI performs especially considering he is going to get dropped from the Pakistan team, hopefully. He will be looking to make waves so he does not.
