Something we've been waiting for ages has finally arrived: Google in Pakistan

-------------------------------

Google for Education and Pakistan’s Ministry of Federal Education today announced a strategic collaboration to bring digital transformation to millions of students in the country. The partnership will improve access to education and support the development of a digital ecosystem for learning – for Pakistan’s tens of millions of students

Google, through its Google for Education’s country partner, Tech Valley, will work with the Pakistani government to:

• Establish a local assembly of over 500,000 Chromebooks by 2026
• Provide access to digital tools and resources for students and teachers
• Train teachers on how to use technology effectively in the classroom
• Develop and implement innovative learning programs that leverage technology

The collaboration will focus on helping out-of-school children in Pakistan. Last month, the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Shehbaz Sharif, declared an “education emergency” to address the issue of over 26 million children being out of school. He pledged to oversee a national program to enroll these children back into educational institutions and expressed his hope for the provincial governments’ support in achieving this goal.

As part of the collaboration, Allied, an Australian manufacturer of Google Chromebooks, will establish an assembly line in Pakistan to locally assemble Google Chromebooks, making them more affordable for educational purposes. The goal is to ensure that every student in the country has access to cutting-edge classroom technology, which will enhance their learning experience.

Ultimately, Google’s collaboration with the Ministry of Federal Education aims to drive a large-scale digital transformation of Pakistan’s education system, creating smart classrooms and fostering a healthy learning ecosystem. Both partners will work together to empower educators and students, focusing on upskilling, training, and building flexible smart classrooms.

Shehbaz Sharif, the Prime Minister of Pakistan, emphasized the need for such initiatives and said, “The work Google has been doing in the education sector is highly commendable, and we are here to support its efforts in Pakistan.” He also expressed a strong interest in expanding the collaboration between Google and the Government of Pakistan and requested the Ministry of Federal Education & Professional and the Ministry of IT & Telecom to work closely to identify mutually beneficial synergies.”

Dr. Khalid Maqbool Sidiqqui, Federal Minister of Education and Professional Training, said, “The partnership with Google for Education is a significant step forward in our efforts to provide quality education to all children in Pakistan. “We believe that technology can play a vital role in improving learning outcomes and preparing our students for the future.”

Farhan S. Qureshi, Google Pakistan’s country director, says: “This partnership has the potential to transform education in Pakistan for the better, giving millions of students access to education and digital tools that will help them learn better and get ready for the digital economy. Also, creating a local assembly of over 500,000 Chromebooks will help Pakistan’s manufacturing industry grow and attract more investments in technology.”

Kevin Kells, Managing Director, Google for Education, adds: “Google for Education offers powerful tools that can support learners in developing some of the key skills they need to thrive; including foundational literacy and cutting edge digital and AI skills. We are proud to be able to support the Government’s mission and help to safely connect Pakistani young people – including out-of-school children – to high quality learning opportunities. Moreover, Google Classroom and Workspace for Education will help teachers have the maximum impact on their students.”

Lol.., Google will transform lives of people here but they themselves are firing people to follow the voice of their conscience

Only good thing he did:

Google for Startups announces to launch AI Academy

Google for Startups has announced to launch an 'AI Academy' for the promotion of Artificial Intelligence in Pakistan and Asia Pacific.

The establishment of 'AI Academy' is the first success of the Google Chrome Book initiative, which will be followed by more such projects.

The initiative in Pakistan is aimed at creating new cross-border partnerships under the auspices of Special Investment Facilitation Council that will revolutionize the world of AI through exchange of innovative ideas and resources.

These startups will also help Pakistan become a "global hub" for the development of "AI" in the Asia-Pacific region.

Google to produce 500,000 Chromebooks in Pakistan by 2026, presents first to PM

Global tech giant Google on Thursday launched an initiative to produce half a million Chromebooks in Pakistan, marking the occasion by presenting the first device to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

Google Asia Pacific (APAC) President Scott Beaumont presented the locally manufactured Chromebook to PM Shehbaz at a ceremony in Islamabad.

The prime minister, addressing the ceremony, appreciated the contribution of Google on the global level and in Pakistan as well.

He expressed the belief that the young generation was much more capable in the field of information technology and could play a key role in the country’s economic development.

PM Shehbaz said the federal and provincial governments should utilise all possible resources to ensure their education and empowerment.

The prime minister announced that the government had set a target of IT exports worth $25 billion in the next five years, adding that the target was “quite achievable”.

He asked IT experts and entrepreneurs to present a plan to help the government achieve the target besides promoting small and medium enterprises and freelancers.

PM Shehbaz also expressed the resolve to make the country’s governance system completely paperless and digitised to get rid of massive corruption in the people’s best interest.

He said the government had hired a new IT secretary in a transparent manner.

Minister of State for Information Technology and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja said Google was playing an important role in the digitisation of Pakistan under the premier’s vision.

Google Regional Director for Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka Farhan S. Qureshi said focusing on technology would help increase economic activities in the country.

He highlighted that there were huge opportunities for freelancers in Pakistan to move forward in various fields of technology.

Information Minister Tarar and Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal were also present on the occasion.

Dont get me wrong. But this ‘quite achievable’ task means growing IT exports from 2B USD to 25B USD in span of 5 years. How does that sound achievable by any means when the education system is not sorted yet?

That’s encouraging news coming from Pakistan.

Kind of like Elon Musk aim for so high and deliver something.
Even if Pak can get 8-10B , that will be a huge improvement.
More than education they need to sort their damn internet connection.

PPers from Pakistan are so caught up with India that they dont even get some good updates from their own country.

Pakistan is est. to reach 4-5b USD in IT exports in FY26. That is infact a refreshing news to hear. May be time has come for Pakistani youth to move away from hardline religious clutches and look towards growth.

That will be a decent chunk of total export. Goal should be to take it to 10-15B in the next 4-5 years. IT can set the trend and pull forward many other sectors.

The guy who posted the positive news about Pakistan is Indian.. also don’t you hate google?
why would i hate google - i told you i dont like thr lying fake degree holding scamming people who they have employed, which is mainly indians - have messed up google as a company

Sad that Google founders doesn't know that and has Indian leader at the help for its more competitive operations - Alphabet.

India will have the largest Google office outside of the US in 2026 at Hyderabad. Its a 3 million sq.ft office which will likely hold 40-50K employees.

None of the trends or data suggest that Indians are looked down for their talent. And these are not the run-of-the-mill jobs but technical roles requiring good skill sets.

You can hate India. You can think Indians doenst have skills because your are jealous. And I get that, its not easily digestible fact for you. But you need to come to reality at some point dude😁

I think, Pakistan may reach 8-10B by 2030. But, IT as a sector will be stagnant. Pakistan needs to look for some merging sectors. What we see in the AI is that, it will severely impact low skilled jobs and also make it leaner at the top. Given Pakistans nascent IT industry, it will be difficult in the future to attract mid-level roles as competition at the bottom increase and also get cannibalized by AI.

Growth from domestic industries will also contribute to IT growth overall. But its a welcome postive sign. This could have happened 3-4 years back if the political environment was stable.

yet google has decreased as a company in terms of its product, not just me who says this, plenty of tech journalists say this - google maps is poor due to the indian coders - lags, misses turns regular, doesnt update correctly, doesnt show traffic roads.

Google made too many bg errors in creating many ofshoot projects, majority have been scrapped to the the lethargic indian workers

stop calling me dude - thats a 1970's word, you say it far too often, very annoying + plus you indians messed u google - your fault

You cannot even maintain a coherent argument. Google is still one of the leaders in AI more so than their peers such as Amazon, Meta etc. What are you on about??

Writing down some of businesses is part and parcel of innovation. Do you even know how many companies in US and even China have been shut down in emerging tech such as AI, Electric vehicles, Autonomous vehicles etc??

Google almost is one of the leader in most emerging tech, be it AI, Autonomous driving etc. And obviously, it’s not only due to Indians, but Indian talent played its part. They will probably have 50K+ Indians working from India by next year. And thats a testament to Indian talent pool.
Come back when you have a logical argument.

Despite all the differences, I do wish Pakistan’s youth will get opportunities in the future as I know the struggle to grind for good opportunities in this space. You always cry bit seldom have a viewpoint on addressing the core issue.

Not sure about your intent in tagging me on this topic, what’s your point? If Pakistan has achieved record IT exports, that’s good for its people and the economy. But don’t try to flex your muscles when it comes to IT.
Indiranagar startups in Bangalore alone would generate more IT exports than the entire Pakistan.

Calm down

again no, show me any report or journalist or even YT who are happy with the Indian employees, they all reference them as not qualified - just cheaper

Stanford study on India AI capability and talent

Apart from these, why are Global MNCs coming to India instead of hiring through contracts?? Thats a much cheaper option. They pay ~40-50% of US salaries in many cases. Its even expensive than in Poland. Then why??
Because its cheaper?? Other Asian countries are even cheaper. But they are getting the best of both worlds - Quality and Cost.
