Fox News has apologized after a guest criticized the teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg as a “mentally ill Swedish child”.

Appearing on Fox News on Monday, the rightwing commentator Michael Knowles launched an extraordinary attack on Thunberg, 16, who is campaigning in the US to urge action on the climate crisis.

Knowles’s swipe at Thunberg followed one from Laura Ingraham, one of Fox News’s most prominent presenters, who compared Thunberg and other young climate activists to the characters in Stephen King’s horror story Children of the Corn.

Thunberg gave a blistering speech at the United Nations summit, criticizing world leaders for their “betrayal” of young people through a lack of action on the climate crisis.

Knowles, a guest on Fox News’s The Story, was invited to discuss Thunberg’s speech and the climate crisis. He was dismissive of both.

“If it were about science it would be led by scientists rather than by politicians and a mentally ill Swedish child who is being exploited by her parents and by the international left,” Knowles said.

The commentator Christopher Hahn, appearing on The Story to theoretically offer a liberal perspective, immediately criticized Knowles.

A Fox News spokesperson subsequently told the Daily Beast: “The comment made by Michael Knowles who was a guest on The Story tonight was disgraceful. We apologize to Greta Thunberg and to our viewers.”

Fox News told the Hollywood Reporter it had “no plans” to book Knowles as a guest in the future.

The channel has not commented on Laura Ingraham’s attack on Thunberg.

Ingraham used her show The Ingraham Angle to suggest, incorrectly, that Thunberg wanted people to “cede control of our economy, our way of life, our way of transport, how many children you want to have, and if we don’t go along, we will be punished by our own children.

“Does anyone else find that chilling?” Ingraham said.

“I can’t wait for Stephen King’s sequel, Children of the Climate.”

King’s fictional story The Children of the Corn focuses on a group of children in a remote town who believe anyone over the age of 19 should be killed.

Curtis Ingraham, Laura Ingraham’s brother, swiftly criticized his sister, suggesting that her rightwing pronouncements were motivated by financial gain.

He said: “Clearly my sister’s paycheck is more important than the world her three adopted kids will inherit.

“I can no longer apologize for a sibling who I no longer recognize. I can and will continue to call out the monstrous behavior and the bully commentary born out of anger.”

Climate activist Greta Thunberg seemed to troll Donald Trump on Tuesday, changing her Twitter bio to reflect the US president’s mockery of her emotional address to the United Nations on Monday.

On Monday, Thunberg gave a blistering speech at the climate summit in New York, criticizing world leaders for their “betrayal” of young people through a lack of action on the climate crisis.

“You have stolen my dreams and my childhood with your empty words,” she said. “The eyes of all future generations are upon you. And if you choose to fail us I say we will never forgive you. We will not let you get away with this. Right here, right now is where we draw the line.”

One contributor to the president’s favourite TV network was roundly criticised – and caused Fox News to issue an apology – after he responded to Thunberg’s speech by calling her “a mentally ill Swedish child who is being exploited by her parents and by the international left”.

Trump was more subtle. In a tweet, he seemed to belittle the 16-year-old’s condemnation of world leaders for inaction on climate change.

“She seems like a very happy young girl looking forward to a bright and wonderful future,” the president wrote. “So nice to see!”

On Tuesday, Thunberg chose to respond indirectly, embracing the titled by adding it to her Twitter profile.

It read: “A very happy young girl looking forward to a bright and wonderful future.”

What did Trump say when he attacked the young climate change activist?.

it was a sarcastic remark

Trump was more subtle. In a tweet, he seemed to belittle the 16-year-old’s condemnation of world leaders for inaction on climate change.

“She seems like a very happy young girl looking forward to a bright and wonderful future,” the president wrote. “So nice to see!”

So thats what the Trump deranged syndrome people read into it. thanks.

Greta is certainly rattling the right cages.
ind do you think an attack on Trump is going to solve

Do you really think that Robert.

She just absolutely lashed your leaders and you for your inaction on climate change. She has put the blame at your feet for the terrible position of the world right now.

Is the only thing you took from her speech is she rattled the cage of Trump.

So thats what the Trump deranged syndrome people read into it. thanks.

Imagine a human being supporting Trump. Imagine how low in life someone needs to be to support, a racist, sexist conman and defend him. I will never ever respect a single person who falls for Trump. And history will remember them as the most gullible and low people ever

And the funny fact is even your words and phrases are not your own, you just repeat phrases you read on online forums. Trump supporters are given their marching orders and they blindly repeat things like "****" "orange man", "Trump deranged" like robots

it is the very sign of being in a cult. But that doesn't excuse any human being who can support someone like Trump and shows a huge flaw in character

She gave a fantastic speech, and now right-wingers all over the world are throwing their toys out of their prams. Amazing how a 16 year old girl with aspergers syndrome can upset so many people by just laying down the cold hard facts.

Trump derangement syndrome presents itself in this very thread.

Greta Thunberg spoke at the UN and her message is over the last thirty years our leaders, yours and mine have neglected to implement laws and protections for the environment to combat climate change. Her message was you and your leaders have failed and are evil for your inaction.

Normal people will respond with empathy for her and a desire to change the way we interact with the environment.

Trump derangement syndrome effected people are blind to the fact that this is an important message that we all need to absorb and be the catalyst for change to improve our world. Instead they ignore her message and all they find is an opportunity to abuse Trump.

To make this a Trump issue not only confirms how entrenched Trump derangement syndrome is but it also shows complete disregard for the message that Greta relayed.

Imagine how a human being can put their desire to abuse another person before their obligation to be responsible for the environment.

And that's what people who dont understand the obnoxious person that Trump is, fail to see.

I think in your desperation to defend anything that has the name “Trump” in it, you forgot to actually address the article and Trump’s tweet.

Trump: “a happy young girl”?
The girl was practically crying when giving that speach.

I read Trumps tweet, I didnt get deranged by it, so sorry.

Lol, Gilly has descended into bot mode to cope with the trauma of his glorious leader constantly being shown up for the type of hole that he is.

If it's an important message for us all to absorb, why is Trump belittling her message with sarcastic tweets? The US has been on record even under previous Republican administrations saying that American jobs come before world environment issues. That's how seriously they take this message.

Real question is who are the people behind greta. im sure she didnt write her speech, shes most likely being used as a tool.

The western world is absolutely fine when it comes to environmental issues... the real people that need to change are the 3rd and 2nd world countries that have zero regulation regarding the environment.

Ganges River----Yamuna River- india
Citarum River
Yellow River----Yangtze River- China
Sarno River -italy
Buringanga River
Marilao River
Mantaza Riachuelo River

95% of these are located outside the west. one exception is the river in italy..

this is why these activists are never taken that seriously.. change is required but not in the west.

Third world countries will simply counter that the west was able to become first world by industrialisation and they need to be given the same opportunity. Everyone's future is at stake, it has to be a collective effort, not us vs them. The west must incentivise these third world countries to work for the environment so it benefits everyone.

Gilly is one of those folks who views politics as just a game - as long as he's amused and "the libs are owned" he's happy regardless of the real world consequences of Trump's policies and rhetoric.

He still doesn't condemn Trump's racist rhetoric that has emboldened white nationalist terrorists that've committed mass shootings and THEMSELVES cite Trump's words as inspiration.

He said nothing when Trump told those Congresswomen to "go back to their own country", or when Trump mocks victims of rape and sexual assault.

He said nothing about Trump locking children up in cages and instituting a policy of family separation, whataboutery is the only response you get.

Yet pointing these facts out is "Trump Derangement Syndrome" and a "witch-hunt". But when these same Trump cultists (and Trump himself) for 8 years attacked Obama for not really being born in the US, being a secret Muslim, a terror sympathiser, and asked for his birth certificate - that was fair game. Pathetic people.

Not sure if you understand the purpose of the speech or are familiar with the environmental issues already being witnessed even in the developed west.

Yes the third world countries will be the worst affected from climate change due to poorer infrastructure and weaker economies, and already has significant issues with air quality and so on.

However the US is the second bigger carbon emitter in the world and has ALREADY seen increased frequency of extreme weather events and wildfires that climate change is a contributor of.

It has the ability to make a huge difference even if it took unilateral action, but Trump has shredded Obama-era environmental protections and the Paris Climate Accords (which arguably didn't go far enough).

However it's easy for grown men to sit on their rear and mock those activists who stand up and raise their voice, or accuse them in typical desi fashion of having a "lobby behind them".

Because it's not like the Trump administration are affected by fossil fuel company lobbying at all ! But we'd rather not talk about those vested interests do we.

Sorry I just dont fall for the media propaganda, read your post then watch CNN and you see the exact same talking points.

yea thats never going to happen. we live in a world of capitalism and consumerism, as we progress further this will only increase.

we dont live in a world of equality, and that world will never exist. there is no such thing as a utopia the best we can do in decrease the polarity between the two classes..

3rd world countries need to take the first step by outlawing littering and promoting recycling.. most of the worlds plastic comes from 2nd and 3rd world countries rivers.

and things cant be handed out, how will those humans learn and grow? we have to teach them to do it for themselves..

its like giving free fish to a bystander, its better that we teach that bystander how to fish.

clearly your naive if you believe in this day and era where a pampered 16 year old is bought up has any idea of whats going on in the world. shes clearly a puppet who was given a speech to say in front of the UN.

you keep coming back to america, which is probably the greatest country ever in human history.

you dont mention china, india, or pakistan. who have taken zero efforts to combat climate change. these are countries with an international voice thats why im not mentioning any african country.

what efforts have these countries taken? most of the worlds plastic comes from these countries river systems.

the U.S is the worlds biggest economy so its not surprising that they are the 2nd biggest carbon emitters.

instead of crying help to the west, these countries should be making their own efforts to help combat the climate change.

funny thing is what has the UN ever done for humanity, nothing... lol

What if they don't want to? What if they decide they would be better off burning down rain forests to make way for agricultural areas instead to boost their economies?

Coming from a supporter of a President who was born with a golden spoon in his mouth who inherited his millions from daddy and you want to talk about pampered kids LOL.

Anyway you speak of agendas - Trump's entire environmental policy is spoonfed to him by the fossil fuel lobby who donated millions to his campaign and inauguration (some would call that corruption). He's rolled back around 83 environmental protections - including repealing the Clean Power Plan which Trump's OWN EPA estimates there would be 1,400 more deaths each year as a result.

He proposed slashing renewable energy investment by 70%, and has appointed anti-science climate change deniers and fossil fuel lobbyists in his government. Can you please address these actions of the greatest country in human history instead of getting triggered by some 16 year old girl's words ?

China is already leading in renewable energy production, their renewables sector is growing faster than fossil fuels. It's currently the world’s largest producer of wind and solar energy, while four of the world’s five biggest renewable energy deals were made by Chinese companies in 2016 according to Carbon Brief. China infact has laws that force all local grid firms to maximise purchases from local renewable power providers.

All three countries signed up to the Paris Accords, which didn't go far enough and even allows countries to set their own targets, but was better than nothing. The US however is one of the few countries on Earth not to be a signatory after Trump withdrew.

Obviously there are still major issues but the problem is in educating the masses and how their actions can affect their environment.

And all three heads of state at the very least believe in the science whereas the oaf in the White House tweeted out that climate change is a "Chinese hoax".

never got triggered lol, i posted because i was bored and wanted to see other point of views.

i dont like trump love hate relationship im 50/50 with him. america even if it gets destroyed tomorrow will be the greatest country in human history.

bolded point is where countries need to focus their actions, change will not happen over night it will take decades. Best way to snowball that change in by educated the public especially in areas where there is no garbage control.

One of the worst child actors in history.

She should concentrate on her studies and stop acting like a grown up. She, and her generation have not been robbed by climate change at all. They have however been robbed by austerity and ZIRP. Yeah lets see her weep about that.

She was very emotional and dramatic, no doubt.

Economy, poverty etc can be reserved. Not sure if climate change can be now, so she does have a point regarding the future.

A young genius who inspired a global youth movement before her 17th birthday. I salute her.

Indeed! The global youth movement of retweeting her video with a hashtag and feeling they have done something for the climate. Millennials deserve such actor-activists who make a cause trend online for a while before it dies its natural death.

Hello? Most of you are falling for the propaganda! Have you stopped to think there are millions of ignored voices from children who don't ask, but plea and beg, for help, yet their voices are never heard on MSM?

How about pull up some children from war effected Syria, Iraq, and Libya, and put them up on stage. These war torn children are the ones who should be up there crying about their futures which were indeed robbed by a tax payer funded missile.

Greata is a nobody.

They are also doing school strikes, swapping to low- or no-meat diets, replacing clothes less often and reducing their environmental impact.

This won’t go away, because they will come into their power soon. A sea-change is near. Western culture has reached a turning point. And not a moment too soon.

futures gonna be filled with soyboys, and sissys...

good times make weak leaders: aka right now

west is already going towards clean energy, but it will take decades to switch, crying like this isnt gonna make it happen any faster.

infact its the up and coming economies that need to align themselves with green energy.

and you want the power in the kids hands? LOL,

these so called kids have zero life experience and only know what they are told...

these kids cant even multiply using their brain, they need calculators and you want them to make key decisions ahahah

most of these kids the mentally unprepared to listen to someones opinion.

that would be an absolute joke, and we'd be well on our way down the rabbit hole to destruction.

When they reach the age of majority.

When they reach the age of majority.

if majority are crazy and jump off a cliff will you follow?

just because they are a majority wouldn't make it the right decision to give them the power to vote.

especially when majority of the people don't even know what all the candidates or the parties stand for, and base their opinion on someone else's opinion. they cant even think for themselves...

So then what should he have said?

It’s up to you if you want to extrapolate it as sarcasm.

There’s many flaws with him, I won’t deny that, but scrutinizing little things he says is not going to help against him.

Call out his bad policies, and show better solutions to show how wrong he is.

How about giving an answer that is not an immature and sarcastic response to a question from a 16 year old girl who is clearly more educated than him about an issue that needs to be looked at ASAP by world powers? I think that would suffice. It's a joke that all he can do is make a dig at her and that's it.

Super work by Greta, take nothing away from her effort. But it is always easy to ask questions than to find tangible solutions. Climate change is not happening only because of burning coal or petrol - you need to take into account a million other factors, most important of which is our 'lifestyle'.

Yes, we are told about conserving energy but honestly do we care? Why use electricity at all? Why drive around in cars? Why throw dirty plastic pampers all over beaches? Why move to cities and improve your 'status'?

EV car sales are declining, or haven't picked up because people still want to drive petrol cars. PV/renewables haven't picked up because people prefer conventional electricity generation. People spend 90% of their time indoors rather than being outside. And more and more people are moving to cities. That's not Donald Trump's fault. That is our fault, including Greta's generation also.

Tomorrow if the governments impose a rule that anybody not using heating using solar energy will be fined or charged a higher tariff to 'encourage sustainability' and you'll have the same youth coming out on the streets crying out about how unfair the whole shoddy system is. Putting the blame on policy makers is easy but there's only so much you can do to enforce a lifestyle change.

Good post. I fear the world will not make a significant change because people now are selfish. They are not willing to make lifestyle changes or give up an easy life for the future when they wont be around.

The market will decide. Electricity costs will only go up and PV panels and wind turbine costs will only fall.

The vegan diet is becoming more and more popular too, reducing GG emissions and water consumption.

Thirty K people just marched down Central Stockholm for the protection of environment and are gathered in front of a government building in protest, right as I type this down.

There's still some hope left.

The Sun, and the Moon, control our climate.

Anyone thinking we humans can influence these objects doesn't really understand climate change.

I think electric needs to come down as cars will be all electric in the near future.

I leart about the Ozone layer when I was 8 years old. Are you saying there is no damage to this and there is no damage to the planet due to human acts?

The level of atmospheric C02 and temperature goes up and down on a 100,000 year cycle. We are in a warm cycle now. And yet C02 is twice as high as it was at any time in the last four cycles. It started shooting up 150 years ago. That was us. We have hard physical proof.

The important thing now is to stop poking the biosphere in the chest, by reducing emissions and increasing carbon capture. We broke it, so we can fix it. Or stabilise it at least.

I think this girl is great!

It’s curious how the presence of these Malalas and Gretas make some grown men feel threatened. Almost like they don’t respect young women’s right to speak up.

OMG this is hilarious!!

Fair points. As a kid though she personally is not yet in the shoes of policy makers. That being said your point is valid - all of us who question current policy makers will also be primary complaint-lodgers if our commute/AC/fancy goods are compromised due to green & sustainable practices.

Yes it is horrendous but thankfully they are in the minority.

Methane is one of the largest contributing gases to the Ozone layer hole. The number 1 contributor of methane gas is cattle. Not a human act, but a natural occurrence of a gas.

I am saying that climate change is a natural cycle and that governments will find any old excuse to tax the poor while instilling fear into society.

Thanks. India idea of cows being holy is contributing to methane, so its a human act.

Sure it can be a natural cycle and I believed this too but the scientific evidence is too much to reject.

Brian Cox changed mind after this video. The evidence he shows is difficult to refute.

I have seen this video. He shows evidence of change, but doesn't attribute cause to change with any empirical evidence.

Brian Cox, as a physicist, should be explaining how the Moon effects our oceans, tides, and climate, but more importantly, how the moon is shifting away from Earth every year by a couple of inches which alters the climate slightly every year.

Love the way this child has ruffled feathers!

Actually that is a human act too, as there are around two billion cows in the world to feed us beef and milk. We could easily switch to a vegetarian diet, eliminate nearly all the cows and slash methane production (it is 4x worse than carbon dioxide as a greenhouse gas).

Furthermore we have slashed and burned tracts of Amazonia to farm cows, reducing our ability to sequester carbon and causing massive run-off to the oceans, killing plankton blooms with phosphates in the run-off and pushing marine ecosystems toward collapse.

Cattle farming *bad*.

Greta is certainly rattling the right cages.

I feel very strongly about the movement and have personally taken it upon myself to raise awareness with regards to Climate Change. However, I could not help but feel that her lack of professionalism is agitating. Her language, the high emotions; it just feels very pretentious.

She is sixteen, she has Asperger’s. Don’t expect professionalism, don’t expect a filter on her words because it’s all straight from her gut.

Not sure what you mean?

You seem to enjoy that there is controversy, Greta's only purpose was to create disharmony between two groups.

How do we console ourselves to the fact that there is hate and rage on both sides, fighting hate with hate will not breed peace.

The empirical evidence is the Vostok ice core data.

He did that in Wonders of the Solar System.

Her purpose is to wake more people up to the ruination of the biosphere. She is doing very well.

There is a strong scientific consensus that humans are causing global warming - the experts are all saying the same thing.

Are they really all lying to us?

As for Greta, I’m not a fan of her role as a climate change poster girl - sure she’s raising awareness about the issue but she’s a young girl, she should be at home leading a normal, stable life. She shouldn’t be paraded in front of the whole world and treated like some kind of green prophet.

Please educate yourself before writing, ignorant adults like you are the reason why kids are having to lead the fight against climate change.

Methane has no effect on the Ozone layers, the ozone layer depleted due to CFCs (Chlorofluorocarbons) which were used in chemicals in aerosol cans, these go through free radical reactions which cause the ozone (O3) to break down. The depletion of ozone does not contribute to climate change and is slowly re generating as CFCs were banned a while back.

What does cause global warming is methane and carbon dioxide which absorb the heat radiated from the sun, which should usually reflect from the surface of the earth back to space and some heat is absorbed due to atmospheric CO2 and some methane. Pre industrial evolution the CO2 in air was 280ppm, and now it is 410ppm. The worlds climate goes through cycles and it is true that we are going through a warm phase, but the warming is happenning faster and more than normal and this is due to the release of CO2 from combusion engines, factories, power stations etc. Methane also has the same effect and is not a component of air, it is increased mainly due to cattle. Trees take in CO2 for photosynthesis, decreasing CO2 in air, burning these trees down increases the CO2 in air due to complete combustion and less CO2 being absorbed by the tress.

Some uneducated people may also argue that there are more cold blasts in winter and we are having "global cooling", these wintery storms are caused by global warming. When the stratosphere heats up above either north/south pole during winter, the polar vortex moves outwards towards America, Russia, Canada in the Northern hemisphere and to NZ, Argentina, Chille in the Southern hemisphere, causing extreme cold.

I think a bit more knowledge of the subject would have completely changed your perspective.

https://www.epa.gov/ghgemissions/sources-greenhouse-gas-emissions
According to the US Environmental Protection Agency commercial and residential activities only contribute about 12% of all greenhouse gas emissions. Hence disproving you point about a change in lifestyle being necessary.

What we need a change in, is the source of our energy. Fossil fuels aren't gonna last forever and their use causes climate change too hence we have to move towards cleaner/renewable sources of energy like hydrogen/wind/solar/tidal/hydroelectric/nuclear etc. These transitions don't require people's will. They require the collective effort of the millionaires, billionaires and policy-makers of this world so that their funding can be invested into R&D for developing more efficient/cleaner/renewable processes for energy generation and large-scale effective implementation of these technologies in everyday lives of the people. If companies keep worrying about their quarterly target profits then just the people's will can't do jack about anything. Hence policy-makers deserve the blame that they get.

I mean how do you even write these sentences with a straight face.

Now I have a choice to believe you, a random poster who got trigerred by Greta lol, or to believe NASA who've actually put people on the Moon. Its a no-brainer, frankly.

She's barely past high school.

We weren't angels at 16 either. Were we :)

She's a doing a good thing though. Means to an end are important but we shouldn't be this picky.

That's what happens you copy&paste stuff without understanding what it says. Read the pie-chart again, it includes transport and electricity on it too. Both of these are demand-based user entities.

Policy makers have already made RE, EV available to public. Why are you not buying a Tesla and installing solar cells on your house?

It takes time to educate people, you have to start somewhere. No one wanted to voluntarily give up free carrier bags from the supermarkets a few years ago, now everyone happily uses environmentally friendly long life ones.

The alternative is to just let every country do what they want and keep kicking the can down the road. Why complain when the South American govts burn down rain forests so they can use them for agriculture then? Hey, those guys want to drive nice cars too.

That's precisely what I'm saying. You can't stop anyone legally from choosing comfort/money over environment, whether that is at individual, business or government level.
