Wow, that was a once-in-a-lifetime display of flawless and unbelievable hitting by Cummins. Just amazing hitting! Turned the game on its head within a matter of just, well, literally just above 10 balls. Rohit Sharma looked dejected and shocked in the post-match presentation ceremony; he absolutely had no idea as to what had happened just minutes prior to that.

Both Chennai and Mumbai have now lost three matches each in as many games. The two usual top teams struggling so far in this year's edition.

The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) rose to the top of the table in the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 after defeating the Mumbai Indians (MI) by 5 wickets on Wednesday at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune.

Pat Cummins stunned everyone with his batting prowess by equalling the record of joint-fastest half-century in the IPL as KKR chased down the target of 162 with four overs to spare.

Chasing a target of 161, Kolkata Knight Riders lost Ajinkya Rahane’s wicket early after the right-handed batter was caught in the deep in the 5th over, off Tymal Mills’ bowling.

KKR lost skipper Shreyas Iyer’s wicket on the final delivery of the powerplay as Daniel Sams scalped his first wicket of the innings and KKR were 35-2 after 6 overs.

Sam Billings, who was the new batter at the crease, boosted the scoring rate after he clubbed a six each against Murugan Ashwin and Basil Thampi. Venkatesh Iyer hit his first maximum of the innings but KKR lost Billings’ wicket after the right-hander holed out to long-off against Murugan Ashwin.

14 runs came of the 11th over as Nitish Rana sliced a six over third-man. However, the left-handed batter became Murugan Ashwin’s second victim after he was caught at deep mid-wicket.

Tymal Mills was back to bowl the 14th over and struck straightaway by scalping the crucial wicket of Andre Russell who miscued a pull shot and was caught by Brevis. New batter Pat Cummins got underway in style with a six followed by a four against Mills.

In the next over, Venkatesh Iyer completed his half-century while Cummins smashed his second six as KKR required 35 of the final five overs. Pat Cummins changed the momentum within a span of one over with his striking abilities as well as ended up scoring the joint fastest half-century in the IPL.

KKR hammered 35 runs off the 16th over and chased down the total with four overs to spare as Cummins clobbered four sixes and 2 fours against Daniel Sams.Earlier, Mumbai Indians, who were put into bat first, made two changes – Dewald Brevis and Suryakumar Yadav were named in the eleven.

Umesh Yadav continued his good run with the new ball as he found early success to dismiss MI skipper Rohit Sharma, who was caught by Sam Billings in the 3rd over.

MI debutant - Dewald Brevis began his innings confidently and scored two fours and a six as MI were 35-1 at the end of powerplay. After dispatching a six against Varun Chakaravarthy, Brevis was stumped by Sam Billings off Chakaravarthy’s bowling, bringing an end to a brief but entertaining stay.

After a quiet couple of overs, Pat Cummins dismissed Kishan after the left-handed batter miscued a pull shot which was caught inside the circle.

Suryakumar Yadav accelerated from the 13th over after the right-handed batter smacked a four followed by an upper-cut for six against Umesh’s bowling.

With 5 overs to go, MI were 85-3 before 30 runs were conceded in the following two overs, with Tilak Varma doing the majority of hitting. The fifty partnership was up between Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma for the fourth wicket.

MI got into a great position with three overs to go as Suryakumar played a slog-sweep to smash a giant maximum followed by a four against Narine in the 18th over. Both Suryakumar and Varma creamed a four each in the penultimate over against Andre Russell.

Suryakumar was caught behind for 52 but MI finished the innings in grand fashion after 3 sixes from Keiron Pollard guided MI to 161-4 in the first innings.

Brief Scores: Kolkata Knight Riders 162-5 (Pat Cummins 56*, Venkatesh Iyer 50*; Murugan Ashwin 2-25) beat Mumbai Indians 161-4 (Suryakumar Yadav 52, Tilak Varma 38; Pat Cummins 2-49) by 5 wickets.

Life changes for Wankhede groundsmen- From fighting mosquitoes at stadium to five-star comfort

This IPL season, confectionery company Cadbury decided to provide five-star accommodation to reward the unsung ground staff. They have also been given uniforms designed by celebrity designer Masaba, food, and a bus to ferry them from the hotel to the ground and back.

In the past, whenever he crossed Marine Drive, Vasant Mohite, a 57-year-old groundsman at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, would wonder what it was like to stay in one of the luxury hotels along the seaside promenade. It was a dream beyond his means.

But this IPL season, that dream has come true, with confectionery company Cadbury deciding to provide five-star accommodation to reward the unsung ground staff. They have also been given uniforms designed by celebrity designer Masaba, food, and a bus to ferry them from the hotel to the ground and back.

“A miracle,” says Vasant

Vasant Mohite says he has been fortunate to have watched some legendary players from close quarters.
He says there were whispers before the start of the season that they would be put up in a five-star hotel, but he didn’t quite believe it. “Then one day, MCA (Mumbai Cricket Association) told us that Cadbury would take care of our accommodation (for the season). They would give us clothes and food for the next two months of IPL,” recalls Vasant, seated on a cushion with a view of the Arabian Sea hugging the Marine Drive.

He remembers how different, and often difficult, it was before. As the matches often end late — their shifts end much later — they couldn’t return home. So they would spend the night in a small room below the Vittal Divecha Stand at the stadium, where mosquitoes made sleep difficult. “Machhar kaat ke deemag kharab kar deta hai (mosquitoes would drive us mad). After the match, we could not go anywhere as train services were shut. So we would sleep in our office at the ground itself. If there is no game, we reach the stadium by 9 am and leave by 6 pm. But on match days, we come in early, and the MCA pays double if we work late,” says Vasant, clad in khaki shorts and a crisp white shirt.
In his new room, though, he has a different set of concerns. Locating the switch for the lamps was difficult, he says. So much so that he doesn’t switch on the lamps at all. He gets good sleep, but the mattress is a little too soft, he says.

“Walking to the dressing room is different now. We have our own bus which drops us. We don’t have words… the only thing we can say is thank you,” says fellow groundsman Nitin Mohite.

Often, that is all they get from the players too. A “thank you”. But that’s all they want.

In his new room, Vasant Mohite has a different set of concerns. Locating the switch for the lamps was difficult, he says.
Vasant recalls how former cricketer Mohammed Kaif walked in and hugged him two years ago. “Under-19 se yehi hum logon ke seva karte tha (he has been helping us since the U-19 days),” Kaif told his fellow commentators, he says. Vasant was overjoyed.

However, the new generation doesn’t share the same warmth and seems busy in their own world, says Vasant, who has been a dressing-room attendant during match-days since the ’90s, serving players and support staff, providing towels, soaps and ice.

He says he has been fortunate to have watched some legendary players from close quarters. From Sunil Gavaskar to Prithvi Shaw, his service cuts across generations. He has seen the rise of Sachin Tendulkar as well as the rise and fall of Vinod Kambli.

Vasant has seen the rise of Sachin Tendulkar as well as the rise and fall of Vinod Kambli.

Needless to add, he has a special fondness for Mumbai players. “They have been the best for me. They come and ask about my haal-chaal (well being). Kambli, Tendulkar, Ajit Agarkar — they used to make sure I never felt uncomfortable inside the dressing room. I have seen how passionate Amol Muzumdar was about his game. He would get upset the most whenever he got out,” he says.

But when he sees that someone is disappointed, Vasant quietly moves to another room. “Players need space, I have seen players getting angry and getting happy. I have seen how Tendulkar walked back crying. When he went and touched the pitch at the end of his retirement game, I couldn’t control myself. For the next two days, my heart was full,” he recalls.

This IPL season, his heart is full once again.

Why should Cadbury (and not the BCCI/Mumbai Cricket Association) do this?

Indian fans - based on IPL form who makes our T20 team - Chahal or Bishnoi?

David Warner is one of the worst players going around. He is still living off of his past achievements.

Lucknow in full control here , Delhi needed quick wickets here , but they failed so far.

Nitish Rana from Kolkata Knight Riders has been reprimanded and fined 10 percent of his match-fee for breaching the TATA Indian Premier League’s (IPL) Code of Conduct during his team’s match against Mumbai Indians at Pune.

Mr Rana admitted to the Level 1 offence of the IPL Code of Conduct and accepted the sanction.

Quinton de Kock showed imperious form in his 80 off 52 balls as Lucknow Super Giants outplayed Delhi Capitals by six wickets for their third successive win in their debut IPL season here on Thursday. Delhi Capitals lost their way after a sizzling knock from Prithvi Shaw (61 off 31) to end at 149 for 3 after Lucknow predictably decided to field first. With the resources that Lucknow possess, 150 should have been a comfortable chase and the K L Rahul-led side made sure it was, getting home with two balls to spare on a tricky surface.

De Kock was at his destructive best as he shared a 73-run stand with his opening partner Rahul (24 off 25).

The South African wicketkeeper-batter was particularly harsh on compatriot Anrich Nortje who was playing his first game since November. The fit again pacer, playing his first IPL game in India, was smashed for three fours and a six by de Kock in an over leaking 19 runs.

In what turned out to be a forgettable night for Nortje, the South African pacer had to be taken off the attack later after bowling two waist-high no balls.

After Rahul's fall, his team needed 76 off the last 10 overs. De Kock, who collected nine fours and two sixes, put the team on the cusp of victory with his second 50-plus score of the tournament.

With the pitch not the easiest one to bat on, Lucknow struggled to finish the game with even the in-form Deepak Hooda and experienced Krunal Pandya not finding the big hits.

Lucknow eventually managed to get the job done with the young Ayush Badoni hitting the decisive four and a six off Shardul Thakur in the final over.

Earlier, Shaw's knock was all class before Lucknow bounced back in the game with an impressive bowling performance. Young leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi (2/22) was the standout performer for the new IPL entrants.

David Warner (4 off 12), returning to the franchise where he made his IPL debut back in 2009, struggled in his first innings of the season.

Off-spinner K Gowtham (1/23) was given the ball in the second over and Shaw did not let him settle, dispatching a full ball over cover for his first four of the innings.

Jason Holder was at the receiving end in the following over when Shaw pulled him for a six over mid-wicket. Then came the turn of pacer Avesh Khan who was hammered for three consecutive fours in the fourth over.

It seemed Shaw was batting on a different surface while the others struggled around him. He used his quick hands to cut the ball and was equally quick to drive anything full over cover.

It was a promising powerplay for Capitals who reached 52 for no loss in six overs. However, Lucknow fought back after the powerplay with wickets of Shaw, Warner and Rovman Powell (3 off 10) in a space of 18 balls.

Shaw was caught behind off Gowtham after he hit him for a straight six. Warner fell to a poor shot off Bishnoi and Powell saw his stumps disturbed as he went for the slog-sweep off a googly from the young leg-spinner, leaving Capitals at 74 for three in the 11th over.

The onus was on skipper Rishabh Pant (39 not out off 36) to take the team to a respectable total and he did that in the company of Sarfaraz Khan (36 not out off 28) who was playing his debut game for the franchise.

Listen to the latest songs, only on JioSaavn.com
Pant mainly targeted the straight boundaries and Sarfaraz, without taking much risks, showed skills that has fetched him a bagful of runs in domestic cricket.

Gujarat Titans have won the toss and have opted to field

Punjab Kings (Playing XI): Mayank Agarwal(c), Shikhar Dhawan, Liam Livingstone, Jonny Bairstow(w), Jitesh Sharma, Shahrukh Khan, Odean Smith, Kagiso Rabada, Rahul Chahar, Vaibhav Arora, Arshdeep Singh

Gujarat Titans (Playing XI): Matthew Wade(w), Shubman Gill, Sai Sudharsan, Hardik Pandya(c), David Miller, Rahul Tewatia, Abhinav Manohar, Rashid Khan, Lockie Ferguson, Mohammed Shami, Darshan Nalkande

Pandya bowling at 140+ again is s good sign for Indian cricket.

12 overs left

2 overs of shami , 2 from ferguson , and 3 from Rashid.

They have to get 5 overs from somewhere

Terrible quality this season

Too many teams

Too many mediocre players

Wade has not batted properly, Gujrat needs to bring in wridhiman saha as opener and bring in Alzari Joseph

Pandya bowling at 140+ again is s good sign for Indian cricket.

A fully fit Pandya is a terrific cricketer and a need of an hour for Indian cricket in LOIs. That's why I supported him even when he was down and out :inti

SIX

Just what the doctor ordered for Gujrat , they need one boundary every over to keep things under control here

Terrible quality this season

Too many teams

Too many mediocre players

More teams meaning talents got scattered. Its good for Indian cricket as more local players get chance but overall quality reduced. They need to increase the foreign quota to 5 players per team to balance it.

Titans need 87 runs in 54 balls.

Gujrat need to explode now , they cannot take it too far or it will be late

Gill misses an easy century.

Arshdeep will soon be a regular feature in Indian LOI setup.

David Miller is a better striker than Hardik Pandya not sure why commentators are slating him for taking a single.

Tewatia performs another miracle :ssa2

Odean Smith had a brainfade giving an overthrow when they needed 13 from 3 and he stopped the ball

Odean Smith getting such a high IPL contract is such a travesty for a useless gully style cricketer with all muscle and 0 brains.

Embarrassment

Two sixes to win the match, what crazy stuff! Tewatia, you beauty! And here I was thinking that Miller shouldn't have taken the single and instead gonw for 12 out of the 13 required to first tie the match :)). My brother was pretty confident of a second six following the first one, although I thought that such unbelievable drama would not take place. Simply unbelievable and a highly enjoyable end to the match!
