Gym and Fitness Advice thread!

Got really sad over the weekend when I realized I'm getting a bit of a belly and losing definition in my arms and chest region. Also used to have two upper packs visible for a good 5-6 years but that's no longer the case. Haven't been to the gym in 5-6 months due to work, study and life commitments. I went into mild depression seeing the regression of my fitness as I had always prided myself on being a natural athlete and was a regular to the gym throughout my undergrad. Heck at one point I was fit enough to make the squad of the McGill varsity soccer side. Although I never made the first eleven and had to leave the squad after a year or so due to academic needs but still every tom, dick or harry isn't fit enough to be in the squad.

I still can't spare time to go the gym, but from now on I have decided that I will only have fruit chaat during lunch, which means I'll essentially skip a meal. No more pizzas or burgers (or maybe just once in two weeks :uakmal)

This is unusual for me since I used to be fit just by going to the gym or participating in sports and never really had to care about what I ate, but lack of physical activity and slowing metabolism have both resulted in me starting to get a belly. Life happened.

Thought about doing abs at home? Either way, just the realization that you need to change something will take you a long way.

I've been feeling really unmotivated really. Not sure why. I thought I was tired as I went a few days with very little sleep, I have caught up but still just can't be bothered to work out. Need some motivation!

Ain't no such thing as motivation there's only dedication. The hunger to be the best and stand out from the rest is what drives me.

Whats the consensus on working out AFTER sehri? Timewise that works out perfectly for me, but I don't think its a good move considering I'll have to wait 14 hours before I can rehydrate.

I'd go before sehri but I don't necessarily live in a very safe area that it's alright to be out and about around 3 am.

I just hate my fitness going to crap over Ramzan, so I want to prevent that this time around.

Depends upon the intensity of your workouts.

Its well nigh impossible to burn exclusively fat in a workout. You're always burning a mix of body fat, blood sugar and glycogen, even when the heart rate monitor says you're in the fat burning zone. You could well be burning mostly fat, but some of the ingested calories during sehri will inevitably be burnt, leading you that much less blood sugar and glycogen for the rest of the day. If you thought an 18-hour roza was difficult to get through as it is, it will be all the more tough having worked out after sehri.

I would try working out just before iftari instead. The sehri meal would long have been digested, leaving you relying on glycogen and fat. Keep the intensity low to maximize body fat usage, and what better motivation than the iftari just around the corner, a reward in more ways than one.

If you aren't motivated by iftari, you're losing in life :P

Big challenge coming up as Ramzan is here. I am obviously planning to shift my workout time (early morning) to an hour before Iftaar. Really badly hope that i get some more definition in my body by the end of this Ramzan. The mediocre diet is holding me back but Ramzan will change it and hopefully get me into good eating habits for many months to come. I have worked too hard in the gym (not in the kitchen) for way too long to not get the body i desire.

Went to the gym after iftar today. Alhamdulillah there is a 2 hour gap between maghrib and taraweeh (8-10). So I'm planning on going then this month.

Bulking or cutting right now?
Cutting.

For iftaar I had one spoon of fruit chaat, one samosa, one kebab and half glass roafsa.

Then for dinner, one spoon of white rice with a small chicken breast piece. Really not eating much.

Got some good exercise today, mowed the lawn for an hour and played basketball while fasting then worked out after iftaar.

Real challenge is tomorrow. Have an afternoon/evening shift at work until 10 PM so won't be able to eat a proper meal until then.

I will be starving.

What do you guys think of HIIT, good while bulking or does it kill the gainz??

Just do low-intensity cardio if you're bulking. Doing HIIT will not "kill" your gains but it does not make sense to do so if you're trying to bulk. Go crazy on the weights.

Went for 285x5 on the bench because I thought my shoulders would've healed by now since the last injury.

I can feel the pain in my rotator cuffs right now.

Main reason I want to do HIIT is mainly for fitness, I play 50 over matches Saturdays which involves running about a lot. I know it burns a lot of calories but when I do HIIT I only do it for 10 mins or so anyway

I'm never satisfied with myself whenever I hit a new PR. Sure, I'll be happy for around 15-20 minutes but after that, I'll already be thinking about my next goal.

Are any of you like this or is it just me?

Gym induction tomorrow, joining a local gym now I'm back home from uni for the summer.

Getting complimented on the size of your hips is what making it feels like. Time to crush squats tomorrow.

I like this answer. Tried google but the results were all beating around the bush type answers. Will try this.

Getting bigger but not seeing any enhancement in strength. Any tips?

There are two aspects to this. Eat more, lift more. I don't know what else to say. It's pretty self-explanatory.

Secondly, focus on your 5 RM. If you can comfortably do a weight for 5 reps, throw on more weight on each side. For me, I go up once I can do 3 but you're not me. It's a gamble because you're risking an injury. Do what you want.

Train everything twice a week.

I would be interesting to compare notes at the end of Ramzan. I think what we end up eating for sehri and iftari would determine what the experience of working out before iftari turned out to be like. I carry very little glycogen, because I've been on keto and a calorie deficit for months, so I don't think I would replenish much glycogen every day during the two meals, and if I don't keep intensity low, I would "bonk," aka hit the wall, which happens to me sometimes if I do an intense bike ride. If you do carry lots of glycogen and/or replenish it during the meals, your experience may differ.

This is a weird (?) observation but I've found it way easier to make friends and have strangers approach me for conversations after gaining size.

Old geezers are disgusting. Never going to a sauna again after what happened today. :livid:

:))

I always see those old guys in the locker room. Disgusting lol.

I don't know how this guy made it to the old age without natural selection taking it's course. I wanted to beat the living hell out of him but I had the basic human decency to just let it go since he was probably 75.

I can't share the details here.

Five plate deadlift, voila. I've reached all my goals now and it's time to relax until August.

No way man, that's unusual for an uncle.

He's not very old. He's been going since he was a teenager. He asked me if we could go together, pulls 395x3 like it was cakewalk for him.

Me, on the other hand... let's just say that three plates went down on my chest but never went back up.

I'm bigger anyways. :shafiq2

Working out with your girls dad, seems like a cool guy.

Back to Gym finally.

My lower back is sore and it can tweak if I don't have good posture. I did go easy for come back. But did some standing shoulder work out with 35 lbs dumbells. So feeling it in lumber area.

Time to go on the slowest, cleanest bulk of my life for the next two years. I don't want to cut again. PRs are also irrelevant now, I'm past that stage.

Thank god it's summer I can finally pretend that my loss of strength is due to a disciplined cut.

Only 12 weeks are left until the next Mr. Olympia. I'm hoping it's not Phil Heath again, I'm tired of him now.

Dad wanted me to promise I'd never take steroids, I told him I couldn't promise that. I'm already on my fourth cycle of creatine. :shezzy2

Calum in 2018: tore his bicep, injured his leg, now gets bit by a turtle because he tried kissing it. Can't wait before he climbs a flagpole during a thunderstorm and gets struck by lightning.

What the hell is wrong with people? It's astounding how many people worry that having a bad day in terms of your diet will ruin months of progress. You don't just stop living your life.

The Fitness community is now ruined because of the normies.

Protip: When doing the lat pulldowns, imagine you're at the beach and you just asked a cute girl to rub sunscreen on your back and your brain will instinctively call for maximum contraction of all your back muscles. Thank me later.

If you're not trying to leave the humanity behind in the gym then you're doing it wrong.

Bro why you been talking to yourself in this thread:))

The whole body is messed up, joints are starting to ache... time to go on painkillers and a deload week.

Weighing 53 kgs since the time immemorial. Want to gain some 10-15 kgs but this fast metabolism is not helping.

what would you suggest?? apart from beef which is not available here.any supplement shall I take??

No, you only start taking supplements when you have an idea of what you're doing. You're not at that stage right now. I feel like bashing my head against the wall whenever I see newbies wasting away their money on supplements.

Right now just get try to get more calories in however you can; eggs, rice, chicken, fish, milk... even beans will do.

Beef's not good for you anyways unless you're tryna put on fat.
